BREAKING: School proprietor sentenced to death for killing of Hanifa

The proprietor of Nobel Kids Academy and North West Preparatory School, Abdulmalik Tanko has been sentenced to death for the kidnapping and subsequent killing of a 5-year-old school girl, Hanifa Abubakar.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Tanko, the principal suspect who masterminded the kidnapping and killing of Hanifa, was sentenced to death by hanging by the Kano State High Court.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Usman Na’abba gave the order while delivering his judgment on Thursday. Justice Na’abba also convicted Tanko to five years imprisonment for four count charges levelled against him.

The Presiding Judge also sentenced the second defendant, Hashim Ishyaku to death by hanging and four years imprisonment, two years each, for conspiracy and concealment.

TNG reports Tanko kidnapped Hanifa on December 4, 2021, held her hostage and emotionally tortured her for days in his house at Tudun Murtala Quarters, Kano.

On December 10, 2021, the principal suspect killed the 5-year-old girl with rat poison, slaughtered her corpse and put her into a sack. In Tanko’s confessional statement, he gave Hanifa tea mixed with rat poison.

The second defendant, Ishyaku, buried the remains of Hanifa in a shallow grave at the premises of Northwest Preparatory School situated at Kwanar Yan Ghana Tudun Murtala, Kano.

The defendants collected the sum of N100,000 ransom out of the N6 million earlier requested, according to the Prosecutor and Attorney General of Kano State, Mr Musa Abdullahi-Lawan.

Delivering judgment, Justice Na’abba held that the prosecution proved their case with ingredients beyond reasonable doubts.

“Pw1, Pw2, exhibit 11, 12, 13, and oral evidence of the defendants tendered by the Prosecution proved their case. The court discharges and acquits the third defendant Musa for abetment. She is sentenced to two years imprisonment being a mother for conspiracy and attempt to kidnap,” the Judge held.

Earlier, the Defence Counsel, Mrs Hasiya Muhammad-Imam pleaded for leniency and urged the court to temper justice with mercy on behalf of the defendants.

“My Lord, Tanko is a father of three, Ishyaku is the bread-winner of his family while Musa is a mother,” she pleaded.

However, the Prosecution Counsel and Attorney-General of Kano State argued that the case is a crime against humanity.

“I urge my Lord to impose the maximum sentence against the first defendant. The first defendant decided to kidnap Hanifa and decided to kill her because she is old enough to recognise him. The mother of late Hanifa should have justice,” Abdullahi-Lawan said.

TNG reports that the prosecution presented eight witnesses and tendered 14 exhibits to prove their case against the defendants and recovered N29,000. The defence witnesses were the three convicts.

The Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje had earlier this year vowed to sign the death sentence without further delay if given by the court.

  • Rainy Season: FRSC cautions motorists to drive with care

As the rainy season draws near, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano State Command has cautioned motorists to drive with utmost care to avoid a road traffic crash.

The Sector Commander, CC Zubairu Mato, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen on Saturday in Kano.

He said drivers should buy good tyres, and check the wipers, trafficators and other lightening systems of their vehicles to ensure they were in good condition.

According to him, “when the rain is heavy, the roads are very slippery and visibility is dull.

“Motorists need to drive between 20 kilometres to 30 kilometres on the highway while 10 kilometres to 20 kilometres in built-up areas so as to avoid road traffic crash, ” he said.

Mato urged motorists to be mindful of potholes and pedestrians crossing the roads.

He further explained that FRSC would go round motor parks and sensitise commercial drivers to desist from excessive speeding and dangerous driving on highways to avert road traffic mishaps.”

The sector commander added that the command would always continue to participate in the filling of potholes on highways as part of its community development service, with the assistance of construction companies to avert road accidents.

Court stops Ganduje from borrowing N10b for CCTV installation

The Kano Division of the Federal High Court today restrained the Kano State Government from borrowing N10 billion for the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras.

A coalition of NGOs, the Kano First Forum (KFF), filed a motion exparte dated June 27, sworn by the Director-General of the Association Dr Yusuf Isyaka-Rabiu.

KFF through its counsel, led by Badamasi Suleiman-Gandu, prayed the court to restrain Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano from borrowing N10 billion loan.

Other respondents in the suit are the Attorney General of Kano State, Commissioner of Finance Kano and Speaker Kano State House of Assembly.

Others are Access Bank, Federal Ministry of Finance, Debt Management Office and Fiscal Responsibility Commission.

Justice Abdullahi Liman granted the prayers of KFF and restrained the first respondent from borrowing the N10 billion loan and ordered all parties to maintain status quo.

He also ordered the plaintiff to serve the Federal Ministry of Finance, Debt Management office and Fiscal Responsibility Commission with the order and other court processes.

KFF is opposing the borrowing of the N10 billion on the grounds of non compliance with rules and regulations governing loan transactions.

The applicants in their prayers accused the state government of not complying with Debt Management Office’s Establishment Act 2003, fiscal responsibility Act 2007, and laws of Kano State 1968.

The adjourned date would be later communicated to both parties in the suit.

The State House of Assembly had on June 15 approved Mr Ganduje’s request to access N10 billion from Access Bank.

Gov Ganduje isolated as Sen Ibrahim Shekarau dumps APC for NNPP

Kano Central Senstor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress and joined the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) thereby isolating the  state Governor, Ibrahim Ganduje.

With his defection, the power equation has shifted  in the state as a combination of Shekarau and Musa Kwankwaso will make it difficult for APC to retain power in the state.

The lawmaker in a defection letter read during plenary by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, informed the chamber that his decision to quit the ruling party was due to marginalization and lack of internal democracy in the Kano Chapter of the APC.

The full text of the letter reads, “I kindly write to formally notify you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), and declaration for the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP).

“My resignation from the APC was born out of the marginalization of all major critical stakeholders, and lack of internal democracy, in the Kano State chapter of the APC, plus the total absence of the principle of inclusiveness in the affairs of the Party and its Government at all levels in the State.

“All efforts to resolve the long protracted crisis in the State, in the last two years, including the involvement of the national Headquarters of the APC, failed due to the non-cooperation of the Kano State Governor and party leadership in the State.

“Consequently, after due consultation with like-minds and millions of our supporters in the State, we decided to withdraw our membership of the APC and moved to the New Nigeria People’s Party.

“Accept, please, my fraternal goodwill and continued cooperation at all times.”

  • 2023 Election: Labour Party considers establishing office in Kano as Obi assures no region will be left behind

The Labour Party of Nigeria has said it will consider establishing an office in Kano State which is arguably Nigeria’s second most populous State after Lagos, and strategic for securing mass votes from the northern region in the 2023 general elections.

The party made this known on Sunday June 12, while responding to a tweet by former Personal Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on New Media and Digital Communications Bashir Ahmad.

Ahmad had noted that the Labour Party does not have an office in Kano, a state with an estimated population of 12.5million people and over 5,000,000 registered voters.

“Did you know that Labour Party doesn’t have an office in Kano, a state with over 5,000,000 registered voters, not only that the party doesn’t have a single candidate in the whole 44 local governments in the state, and the story is so very similar in at least 25/36 states and FCT.

“In Kano and neighboring Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa and Bauchi states, the Labour Party doesn’t even have a whole gubernatorial candidate, if you don’t know what that means then congratulations,” he wrote.

Responding to his tweet, the party said: “We understand your plight with the lack of structural offices in Kano; we know that many of you desire true change but are unable to speak out due to certain situations; be assured that we are on top of the situation and an announcement will be made soon”.

Meanwhile, presidential flagbearer of the Labour Party Peter Obi has assured that no community or region will be left behind, insisting that “structure is all about human beings”.

“Whenever I hear of NO STRUCTURE, my answer to it is simple; the 100 million Nigerians that live in poverty will be the structure. The 35 million Nigerians who don’t know where their next meal will come from will be the structure.

“The elderly, our mothers, fathers, and the old ones dying or being owed gratuity/pension will be the structure. ASUU; the lecturers that are being owed, and the students who are not in school will be the structure.

“We’ll create the structure, and they’ll see what the structure is all about. The structure is about human beings,” Obi said.

The presidential aspirant seeks to unite an ethnically fragile country by lifting people out of poverty and creating a new sense of nationalism and patriotism.

Obi has promised to publish his governance manifesto in the coming days, which will spell out his priority areas if elected to succeed Buhari.
