  • 2023: Abacha’s son wins Kano PDP governorship ticket

    Alhaji Muhammad Abacha, son of former military leader, Sani Abacha has emerged governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 general election in Kano State.

    Abacha polled 736 votes to defeat his closest rival, Jafar Sani-Bello, who scored 710 votes in the primary election on Wednesday in Kano state.

    Announcing the results, the Returning Officer,  Hajiya Amina Garba, declared  Abacha as the winner of the primaries having scored 736 votes.

    The Chairman the Electoral Committee, Alhaji Mohammed Jamu, said the primaries were legally conducted with validly-elected delegates and supervised by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, police and State Security Service operatives.

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed nine persons died and 10 others injured in a gas explosion that occurred early morning at Aba Road, Sabon Gari, Kano State.

    The NEMA Kano Territorial Coordinator, Dr Nuradeen Abdullahi, confirmed the development to newsmen while giving an update on gas cylinder explosion in Kano on Tuesday evening.

    “The death toll in the gas explosion which occurred at Aba Road in Sabon Gari of Fagge Local Government Area, Kano, has increased to nine.

    “Nine dead bodies were recovered from a collapsed building affected by the explosion and have been deposited at the mortuary at Armed Forces Specialist Hospital, Kano.

    “Ten persons injured and were taken to various hospitals out of which two have been discharged,” he said.
    He noted that the Director-General of NEMA, Mr Mustapha Habib, was at the scene of the incident.

    “The Director-General NEMA led the rescue team and escavators were mobilised to ensure removal of trapped victims.

    “NEMA rescue team were at the site of the incident to investigate and ascertain the impact of the explosion.”

    Abdullahi added that the rescue operation, which started at about 10 a.m and officially closed at about 5:15 p.m, was well coordinated.

    He therefore called on the general public, particularly those living in the affected area, to remain calm and warned against spreading fake news.

    Osinbajo visits scene of Kano explosion

    Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday afternoon arrived in Kano state and immediately headed to the scene of an explosion that happened in the morning.

     

    Osinbajo was accompanied to the scene by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state as response teams continue to restore normalcy.

     

    The Vice President is expected to hold a number of meetings while he is in Kano. In a tweet by his spokesperson, Laolu Akande, he said, “VP Osinbajo accompanied by Kano Gov. expresses condolences with victims of the explosion and their relatives, while also wishing the injured speedy recovery. He is now departing the scene of the explosion in Sabon Gari, focusing on the planned consultations in Kano for the day.”

     

    According to National Emergency Management Agency and Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development have both confirmed that nine persons have been confirmed dead.

     

    “Nine dead bodies have been recovered so far from the rubble of a collapsed building beside a primary school following explosions from gas cylinder at Aba Road in Sabon Gari area of Kano,” the Humanitarian ministry said.

     

    Adding that, “NEMA DG, Mustapha Habib Ahmed is at the site of the incident and coordinated the rescue operations.”

     

    “Two persons injured by the explosion were taken for treatment at Airforce Hospital, Kano. The rescue operation has been concluded following the complete removal of the rubble from the location.”

     

    The Kano state government in its reaction by the commissioner for information, Malam Muhammad Garba said the incident happened at an animal feed store opposite the school along Aba Road, Sabon Gari area of Fagge local government.

     

    He said while the cause of the explosion and the damage it had done is yet to be officially ascertained, the investigation has since commenced to determining the cause, impact and measures to be taken.

     

    Malam Garba called on the people in the state, particularly those living in the area where the incident occurred to remain calm while the government in collaboration with relevant agencies are working on the matter.

     

    The commissioner assured that government would keep the public abreast of any development and warned people to desist from spreading unsubstantiated news.

    The death toll in a gas explosion that occurred in Kano State on Tuesday has increased to nine.

    The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs made this known while announcing the arrival of the Director-General of the National Emergency Agency, Mustapha Habib Ahmed, at the scene of the incident.

    Earlier, the police command in Kano State confirmed the death of four persons, saying that gas, not a bomb exploded on Tuesday morning.

    “Nine dead bodies have been recovered so far from the rubble of a collapsed building beside a primary school following an explosion from a gas cylinder at Aba Road in Sabon Gari area of Kano State.

    “DG @nemanigeria Mustapha Habib Ahmed was at the site of the incident and coordinated the rescue operations. NEMA is presently coordinating the rescue operations with sister agencies,” it tweeted.

    It has become very clear that Tuesday’s incident in the Sabon Gari area of Kano State was not a case of a suicide bombing but a case of a gas explosion.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) also clarifies that the explosion did not occur at a school as earlier reported but that the incident happened near an animal feed store opposite the school on Aba Road, Sabon Gari, Kano.

    Recall that in the early hours of Tuesday, there was pandemonium in the Sabon Gari area of Kano. Earlier reports had it that it was a bomb explosion, but official reports have said it is a gas explosion.

    TNG reports the police command in the state had confirmed the killing of four persons following the incident.

    Meanwhile, the Kano State government has in a statement by Mr Muhammed Garba, the State’s Commissioner for Information called on residents to remain calm.

    Garba said that the situation has been brought under control, as security agencies had taken over the area for rescue operations and investigation.

    “The state government will keep the public abreast on any development,” he said.

    Garba cautioned residents against fake news and speculations on the incident.

    He also faulted the claim that the explosion occurred in a school, saying that it happened near an animal feed store opposite the school on Aba Road, Sabon Gari, Kano.

    He said that while the cause of the explosion and the damages were yet to be ascertained, an investigation has commenced.

    He urged residents, especially those living in the area to remain calm, saying that the government was working to restore normalcy in collaboration with relevant security agencies.

    Kano explosion: Death toll rises to 9

    Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has disclosed that about 9 bodies have been recovered so far from the gas explosion.

    A statement by NEMA’s spokesperson, Manzo Ezekiel revealed that the Director-General of NEMA, Mustapha Ahmed was at the site of the incident and coordinated rescue operations.

    The agency, however, confirmed that it was not a case of a bomb explosion but a case of a gas explosion.

    The statement reads: “9 dead bodies have been recovered so far from the rubbles of a collapsed building beside a primary school following explosions from a gas cylinder at Aba Road in Sabon Gari area of Kano.

    “Director-General National Emergency Management Agency, Mustapha Habib Ahmed, was at the site of the incident and coordinated the rescue operations. He mobilised excavators being used for the rescue operations and said NEMA team will ensure complete removal of the rubbles to retrieve all trapped persons.

    “Furthermore, the DG instructed the NEMA rescue team to remain at the site until conclusion of the rescue and to work together with security agencies and other response organisations present at the location.

    “NEMA is presently coordinating the rescue operations involving members, Nigerian Red Cross, military, the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, Kano SEMA.”

    Sen Jibrin is reported to have insisted that he would not dump APC even as his gubernatorial ambition has been blocked by Ganduje, but that the issue of the senate was something he was not ready to also give up.

    However, following the defections tsunami in the Kano APC in which many actors have left the party to other parties seeking platforms to contest for their intended positions, Ganduje agreed that some bigwigs in the party, including Barau Jibrin, should be allowed to have their ways back to Senate to save the party.

    APC State Secretary in Kano, Zakari Sarina who confirmed the story to TheNeasGuru.com said there has been tangible agreement s at high levels.

    In a similar development at the National Level, the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Monday resigned ahead of the presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress.

    The President’s aide on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Ita Enang, who is running for governor of Akwa Ibom State, also resigned.

    However, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, dropped out of the presidential race in order to retain his seat while the Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, also gave up her senatorial ambition.

    Amaechi’s resignation was disclosed in a statement issued by the Amaechi Presidential Media Committee in Abuja on Monday.

    An operative of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano State Command has killed a vendor in the prison premises TheNewsGuru,com can confirm.

    The killing of the vendor has been confirmed by the Nigerian Correctional Service in Kano state.

    Confirming the incident, the Command’s Spokesman, DSC Musbahu Lawan, said the unfortunate incident was an accidental discharge, which led to the death of the vendor, and injuring one person within the vicinity of the Goron Dutse Medium Security Custodial Centre.

    He noted that the officer involved in the killing has been arrested

    ‘The officer involved in the shooting has since been arrested on the order of the state Comptroller of Correctional Centre, and a panel was set up to investigate the circumstances surrounding the ugly incident”

    The Comptroller, who condoled the deceased family, assured that the case will be duly investigated and appropriate action will be taken according to the provisions of the law.

    He added that the service maintains zero tolerance for indiscipline and any form of recklessness.

    2023: Kano Governor Ganduje visits Shekarau to stop him from defecting to NNPP

    Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, on Friday, stormed the home of the former governor Senator Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau to stop his defection to another party,TheNewsGuru can confirm

    Recall that there were speculations making the rounds that Shekarau had plans to defect to Nigeria People’s Party, (NNPP) in order to continue actualizing his political dreams.

    Shekarau and another Kano bigwig senator Rabiu Kwankwaso were alleged to be planning to team -up and join NNPP in order to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC)

     

    Shekarau was said to have stormed Kano alongside Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the NNPP presidential hopeful, Friday, in what appears to be a new collaboration to take over power from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2023.

    However, Governor Ganduje, who is apparently aware of unforeseen consequences should Kwankwaso and Shekarau join forces, is said to be working hard to stop his predecessor from moving to the NNPP.

    Sule Ya’u Sule, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau’s spokesperson, confirmed the visit saying he wouldn’t reveal the details.

    “Yes, Governor Ganduje was this evening at Mallam (Shekarau)’s house, but I cannot tell you what actually transpired there.”

    Reports had it that the moment Ganduje entered Shekarau’s house, there were thunderous echoes of the senator’s supporters shouting, “We must not be stopped from going out of the APC by whatever reason.”

    It remains to be seen whether the two political heavyweights in Kano will still defect or not.

    The Kano State Hisbah Board has deployed its officials to Mosques across the 44 Local Government Areas of the state to ensure orderliness during ‘Ramadan Tahajjud’ which begins on Thursday night.

    This is contained in a statement by the Commander General of the Board, Dr Harun Ibn-Sina on Thursday in Kano.

    ‘Tahajjud’, also known as “night prayer”, is a voluntary prayer performed by Muslim faithful during the last 10 days of Ramadan in search of Allah’s favours.

    Ibn-Sina said that the last 10 days of the Holy month was a period where Muslims engaged in midnight prayers, popularly known as Tahajjud.

    He cautioned hoodlums against intimidate worshippers during Tahajjud prayer or engaging in criminal activities, saying that those found wanting would be made to face the wrath of the law.
