NLC blows hot over call to slash workers’ salaries

The Chairman, Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kabiru Ado-Minjibir has cautioned against any attempt to slash salaries of workers in the country.

Minjibir, who gave the warning in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in Kano, said any attempt to reduce the workers’ salaries would be met with stiff resistance from workers in the country.

The NLC Chairman was reacting on the advice given to Federal and state governments by a lawmaker representing Borno South in the Senate, Mohammed Ali-Ndume to slash the salaries of workers.

He described the advice by the lawmaker as `ill-timed’ considering the situation in the country.

“It is not the right time for the lawmaker to give such advice because it’s not the right time to reduce workers’ salaries as they are not being given any palliative.

“Since workers are not being given palliatives, their salaries should not be tampered with,” Ado-Minjibir said.

Reacting to the ultimatum the NLC gave to the Kano state government to refund salaries it deducted from its members or face strike action, Ado-Minjibir said the deadline would expire on Monday, June 15.

He said committee set by the state government under the leadership of Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji had met twice with labour representatives with a view to resolving the issue amicably.

“Discussion is still ongoing on the issue and we will come up with our resolution on Monday, June 15 when the deadline given to the state government would have expired,” he said.

Recall that the Coalition of Labour unions in Kano state had on May 28, issued a 14-day ultimatum to the state government to refund what they described as “illegal deduction” from their May 2020 salaries or face industrial action.

  • Kano Govt reacts to viral video on Sani Abacha Stadium isolation centre

Kano Govt reacts to viral video on Sani Abacha Stadium isolation centre

Kano State Government on Tuesday said the delay in the early completion of the Sani Abacha Stadium (SAS) Isolation Centre was necessitated by the review of the project initial plan.

Malam Muhammad Garba, the state Commissioner of Information, made the clarification in a statement in Kano.

Garba, who was reacting to a viral social media video clip on the project, dismissed the footage as a “mischievous attempt to misrepresent facts on the ongoing installation works at the isolation centre, donated by the Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID).

The project, which was initiated in April, was designed with a 500-bed capacity for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

The three and a half minutes video clip, showed ongoing installation works at the isolation centre with artisans working inside one of the two temporary tents.

It also showed beds and containers packed outside the tents, while a commentator alleged that the centre was not functional in spite of the hundreds of confirmed cases of the virus in the state.

Garba, however, said that the video clip was an attempt to discredit the effort by the coalition in the fight against COVID-19.

“Whoever is behind the filming does so to deliberately to distort the datum considering that even in the clip, it shows that the project is still ongoing, but calculatedly moves away from filming the exercise just to accomplish the task of garbling the fact.

“The Sani Abacha Stadium Isolation Centre initially billed to accommodate 500 beds was later redesigned based on recommendation and standards set by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 (PTF) and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC),” he said.

Garba explained that while the project was reviewed and installation works continued, 218 of the 500 beds planned for the centre were deployed to other centres.

He listed the centres to include Abubakar Imam Urology, 77 beds; Daula Isolation Centre, 10 beds and 213 beds moved to Karfi Sports Institute.

The commissioner noted that 213 beds were retained at SAS Isolation Centre, bringing the total number of 500-bed capacity delivered by CACOVID in the state.

Garba reiterated government commitment to ensure completion of the 213-bed capacity isolation centre at the stadium, in accordance with recommendation of the relevant health authorities.

He urged members of the public to disregard the video clip, stressing that government would not be distracted from the big picture to serve the people.

The Kano State Ministry of Health had confirmed 919 COVID-19 cases of which 747 were active cases, 134 discharged and 38 deaths as at May 25.

Commissioner fired by Ganduje for celebrating Kyari’s death tests positive for COVID-19

A former Commissioner in Kano State, Muaz Magaji, fired by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje for celebrating the death of Abba Kyari has tested positive for Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Muaz Magaji made this known using his Facebook profile on Thursday, saying the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) released the result this morning.

“This morning my NCDC test is out…I have been confirmed Covid-19 positive…And have been moved to one of the state facilities…pray for us!,” the former commissioner wrote.

Recall that Kyari, 67, a former chief of staff to President Muhammad Buhari, died last month from complications of COVID-19.

However, Muaz Magaji took to his Facebook page to express delight over the passing of late Kyari, declaring that “Nigeria is free”.

But hours after making the comments, Governor Ganduje relieved Muaz Magaji of his position as the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure.

Kano anti-graft agency seals warehouses for allegedly hoarding food items

The Kano Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday sealed warehouses suspected to be hoarding food items and essential commodities in the state.

The Chairman of the Commission, Mr Muhuyi Rimingado, in a statement on Wednesday in Kano, listed the commodities to include 19, 500 bags of flour and 5, 120 bags of sugar.

Others are, 79, 645 cartons of spaghetti and 37, 000 cartons of pasta.

Rimingado said that the items were seized at ‘Singer market’ sequel to a raid conducted by the operatives of the commission.

The commission had earlier directed traders involved in unilateral hike in prices of food items to sell them at regulated prices or risk forfeiture.

Rimingado said the commission also uncovered fraudulent activities by some traders, who wretched taking advantage of the lock down occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic to hoard and inflate prices of food and essential commodities.

“Hoarding and unnecessary hike in prices of food items is capable of undermining government efforts to stem the pandemic and breach the security of the state.

“This action (hoarding and unauthorised hike in prices of goods) is a crime, under the provisions of Regulation 11 (2) (3) and (4) of the Kano State Public Health (Infectious Disease) Regulations 2020.

“The action is capable of undermining the security of the state to the fact that a lot of Islamic clerics (Ulama) have been making reference to it in their Ramadan fast lectures.

“This is in accordance with Section 39 of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti Corruption Law,’’ he said.

Rimingado noted that sequel to the raid, the leadership of the traders associations and commission had agreed to peg the price of sugar at N16, 000 per 50kg bag.

He said that the agreement entails giving a waiver to ”Singer market” during the lock down to be supplying essential commodities to neighbourhood markets, to deal with scarcity and control prices.

While sealed stores would be allowed to dispose their goods and a supply channel be maintained from the manufacturers namely Dangote and Bua Groups to the retailers.

Traders and markers were also expected to observe prevention protocols in their respective business premises during the approved transaction period.

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje had earlier expressed concern over hoarding and hike in prices of food commodities in the state.

Ganduje lamented that dealers and traders of food and essential commodities in the state were selling at 100 per cent hike.

The governor also confirmed at a briefing on COVID-19 on Saturday that two major manufacturers of essential commodities had informed him that they did not approve any price increase on their products.

  • COVID-19: Gov. Ganduje, national security and grandiose incompetence – Mideno Bayagbon

COVID-19: Gov. Ganduje, national security and grandiose incompetence – Mideno Bayagbon

    By Mideno Bayagbon

The last two weeks have been all about Kano State. News stories from there have riled the national consciousness, upped our fears, and showcased us as still an unserious bunch of buffoons. First was the dramatic upswing in the number of positive cases of the Coronavirus pandemic in the State.

From 16 cases two Wednesdays back, the numbers have jumped so dramatically that, to the fear of all, Kano has become the New York or Wuhan, the epicentre of the Coronavirus pandemic here; the only difference being that New York and Wuhan had capacity to deal with such an existential threat.

Unbelievably, the news that came out on Sunday evening indicate that as many as 80 percent of those tested are returning positive results. The presidential team has also pointed out that contrary to the State Governor’s assertion, the unexplained deaths ravaging the State can be traced to the pandemic.

According to the head of the team, Dr Nasiru Gwarzo, sent to Kano State by President Muhammadu Buhari, Kano currently has a high rate of community transmission of the virus.

In his words, “What we are afraid of in this pandemic is what is happening. The pandemic has left the first stage of entering the country. It has left the second stage and has entered the third stage of community spread. This is not news that will be palatable to the public but like a Hausa proverb says, ‘on the day you are to take a bath, you cannot hide your navel’.”

If this is true, then we are all in serious trouble. Those who predict that as many as one million people could die of the pandemic in Nigeria might be proved right. But then, God forbid.

Like the typical Nigerian, all our hopes now are channelled towards a divine intervention. If not, how does one explain the action of the Governor of the State, who despite the severity of the case has lifted the presidential lockdown on the State. Like a comic would say, Governor Ganduje has told the people of Kano State to go and die! A bastardised, incompetent leader on full display!

The fear is, the federal authorities left it too late before stepping in to curtail the grandiose incompetence of the Governor and his team. It took the death of a collage of 15 Emirs, Professors and other prominent indigenes of the State, in a hellish 24 hours, to finally push Abuja to step in. The unexplained deaths of over 640 ordinary folks a week earlier didn’t quite raise the alarm bell strong enough. But for cemetery attendants who drew attention to the unusual high number of bodies brought for burial, the government was blissfully unaware.

As in the case of the worrying spike in the number of the COVID-19 victims, the State Government and its Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, unprepared and unable to act, helplessly looked away. By his Government’s own admission, over a hundred people were dropping dead daily, yet their deaths were explained away, by a curiously unconcerned Governor, as having nothing to do with Coronavirus but more to do with cerebral meningitis, and other diseases by audio autopsy.

Pointedly, however, since the pandemic made a landfall in Kano State, reputed as the most populous State in Nigeria, it has been a tale of one costly mistake after another. Practically no preparation was made before the index case, who subsequently died, landed in the State. No isolation centres, no ventilators, no man power, no containment strategy.

This was clearly shown when the test lab in Kano was shut by the Government for decontamination after serial infections of staff. This also came shortly after some members of the State COVID-19 containment committee, including the co-chairman, tested positive for the virus. Nothing highlights the State’s shoddy preparation than the fact that little or nothing seems to be in place to tackle the pandemic in such a densely populated State.

Perhaps the most vivid capture of the looming implosion in the State was raised in a viral audio message early last week. All who listened to the heart stopping cry of an Abuja based, 70 years old Fatima Ahmed, whose son in-law died of COVID-19 infection in Kano, knew the State and indeed Nigeria was heading for serious disaster. Her case truly showcases the calamity awaiting the nation in Kano. If her claim is to be believed, her son-in-law would not have died if the health authorities in Kano and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) had responded to failed calls put to their lines.

As we all know, the Kano Government had shut down every activity related to the COVID-19 pandemic in the State after a spate of infections of some of those involved, and the absence of facilities to test and treat patients.

According to her, even efforts to get the NCDC to contact the family of the deceased and test them for the virus and possibly quarantine them for treatment were unfruitful. Somehow, the power of social media eventually moved the authorities, first to move the family of the deceased to Abuja for testing and quarantine, and also to urgently take steps to move in to stem the ugly tide swooping unchallenged on the State.

Thank God the NCDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) have sent an intervention team to Kano, where the COVID-19 virus is sweeping across with a vehemence matched only by the incompetence of the Government in Kano. The Governor, of course is busy playing politics with the pandemic and hiding his annoying incompetence in a call for Abuja to give his State N15 billion bailout to fight the virus. Other than that, Governor Ganduje had maintained a curious silence, until Sunday afternoon, when he reluctantly admitted that Kano was indeed in serious trouble.

His late realization and admission of the deep trouble staring Kano in the face notwithstanding, Governor Ganduje’s incompetence has become the albatross of the North. Most index cases now are either those from deported almajiris or returnees from Kano. Most States bordering Kano have had their territories invaded by Kano returnees, who are busy spreading the virus. Kano State has become the national leprous finger.

As it has now become clear, the incompetence of one man, whose high office and responsibility should have tackled the pandemic more vigorously and systematically, has opened the door to a foretold devastation. It has also enthroned as prophets the deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, and his bosom friend, the gadfly of Kaduna, Nasir El-Rufai. Today, like they warned, the almajiri scourge, left unattended, has become the albatross, the keg of gunfire set to implode and devastate not just Kano, but a large patch of northern Nigeria.

The above notwithstanding, I am still mystified by the absolute lack of capacity and compassion on the part of the 70 years old Governor Ganduje, who despite the tsunami invading his homestead, found solace, it turned out, recently, in abetting the kidnap and forceful conscription of two under-aged Christian girls into Islam, an event he staged with so much fanfare and gusto. One would be forgiven in thinking he was celebrating the defeat of the invading virus, that he has found a solution to the grim harvest of deaths.

The heavy media presence, the celebratory rhetorics were that of a man who has done something untoward, who has stared the enemy down the pit of hell and emerged victorious, not that of a Governor who swore to uphold the constitution of Nigeria, who pledged to do all in his power to safeguard the lives and properties of the people of Kano State. Perhaps he timed it so since the national attention was on the sorrow of deaths of the common and noble which drown this perfidy in an ocean of unshed tears.

One can now understand why he was forever at loggerheads with the cerebral, deposed Emir Sanusi, who did not suffer fools gladly. One can now truly be in the shoes of the Emir, and why he could not accord an iota of respect to this Governor apparently promoted to his level of stupendous incompetence. What a monumental disaster Ganduje has carelessly swam his people in.

  • Kano Mysterious Deaths: Reps propose N15bn intervention fund, also set to interface with PTF on Covid-19

The house of representatives on Tuesday has proposed a N15 billion special intervention fund for Kano over mysterious deaths in the state as it also proposed an urgent interface between the house committee on health and the Presidential Task Force.

The motion was moved. by the house leader Hon. Alhassan Doguwa from Kano State calling for an urgent intervention by the federal government to save the lives of indigenes of the troubled state.

The motion which came under matters of urgent public importance, following the high rate of mysterious deaths that has engulfed Kano State the economic hub of the north with a population of over 18 million inhabitants.

The leader expressed worries that unless the situation is tackled urgently the state stands to lose more people and this could spread to other states.

On their part while contributing to the motion lawmakers call for collaboration between states and federal government on way to tackle the pandemic in good time.

They also call for proper enlightenment to educate and sensitize the populace as many especially in the north are still ignorant of the Coronavirus.

There were however many amendments to the motion which includes

A call for one testing centre each in all the 744 LGAs in the country.

A call for the inclusion of all stakeholders, including traditional and religious leaders, in the sensitisation of the people on COVID-19.

The House should engage with the PTF and a federal government provision of N15bn special intervention fund to every state among others.

The motion was unnanimously adopted by the house when put to vote by Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.

But the Speaker however added that the FG would not provide equal deal on intervention fund to states with varied number of cases.
