    Kano Govt declares day of mourning for 22 deceased athletes

    Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has declared Monday a day of mourning to honour the memory of the 22 Kano athletes and officials who died in a road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival (NSF) held in Ogun State.

    A statement issued in Kano on Sunday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Mr Sanusi Bature, said the victims, mostly youths, were part of the state’s contingent to the just-concluded 22nd NSF.

    “On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, we extend our heartfelt condolences over the unfortunate incident that occurred along the Kano–Zaria expressway,” Bature said.

    He quoted Yusuf, who is currently in Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj operations, as describing the incident as a dark moment for the state.

    “It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news of the unfortunate incident which claimed the lives of 22 innocent citizens and left several others injured,” he said.

    The Governor called on the people of the state to remain calm and united during this difficult period, adding that all necessary support would be extended to the families of the deceased and the injured.

    He also urged Imams and faithful across the state and beyond to offer prayers for the repose of the souls of the departed and for their families to find strength in this moment of grief.

    FRSC reveals cause of fatal accident that claimed lives of 21 Kano athletes

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has revealed outcome of preliminary investigations into the fatal accident that claimed lives of 21 Kano athletes who were on their way from the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun State.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Corps Marshal of FRSC, Malam Shehu Mohammed, to have disclosed that preliminary investigations suggest driver fatigue and speeding as primary causes.

    This is contained in a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Saturday in Abuja.

    Malam Mohammed expressed deep sorrow over the tragic crash, which occurred on the Kaduna-Kano expressway, while calling for urgent adherence to road safety measures.

    Mohammed commiserated with the Kano State Government and the families of the victims.

    The crash, which involved 24 adults, is believed to have resulted from driver fatigue and excessive speed during the long night trip.

    Mohammed said the fatal incident occurred at Gadar Yankifi on the Kaduna-Kano expressway at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 31.

    According to reports, a coaster bus registered KN 041 A17, owned by the Kano State Government, was involved.

    “The bus carried 24 occupants, 23 males and one female. Twenty-one males died on the spot, while three others, including two males and the lone female, were injured and taken to the hospital.

    “Preliminary investigations suggest driver fatigue and speeding as primary causes, especially during night travel when visibility is reduced and risks are heightened.”

    Mohammed extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, describing the incident as a shared national loss.

    He urged fleet operators to caution drivers against night driving, speeding, and fatigue, which were common causes of avoidable crashes.

    He also called on all road users to prioritise safety by complying with traffic rules, ensuring vehicles were roadworthy, and making sure drivers were well-rested before journeys.

    The Corps Marshal reaffirmed FRSC’s commitment to reducing road traffic crashes and pledged to intensify enforcement efforts to safeguard lives and prevent similar tragedies on Nigerian roads.

    SAD: 20 Kano sports festival athletes perish in ghastly motor accident

    No fewer than 20 sports men, women, officials and journalists were confirmed dead in a fatal accident while returning home from the just-concluded National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun State.

    The incident occurred on Saturday, May 31, 2025 in Dakatsalle town, about 50 kilometres from Kano, as the team was approaching the final stretch of their journey home.

    Those who lost their lives in the crash include athletes, a journalist, medical personnel, and sports administrators, according to preliminary reports from emergency responders and eyewitnesses.

    Details of the cause of the accident remain sketchy at the time of filing this report, but authorities said emergency response teams were deployed to the scene, and the injured taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

    Police nab 41 suspects in connection with DPO’s murder

    The police command in Kano State says it has arrested 41 suspects, including key individuals, in connection with the gruesome killing of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rano Division, CSP Baba Ali.

    In a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the police described the killing as a “grave attack on the fabric of society” and vowed to ensure justice was served.

    The late CSP Ali was reportedly murdered while on active duty in Rano, an incident that has drawn widespread condemnation from both within and outside the state.

    According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police in Kano, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has assured residents of the Command’s commitment to ensuring that all those involved in the incident are arrested and prosecuted.

    “The Police are working tirelessly to ensure that no stone is left unturned in apprehending all those involved in this dastardly act,” the statement read in part.

    While commending members of the public for their cooperation and condolences, the command urged residents to remain calm and continue supporting the ongoing investigation.

    “The command honours the memory of CSP Baba Ali and commends the bravery of officers and men who risk their lives daily to keep our state safe,” the statement added.

    The Police also reiterated their resolve to maintain law and order across the state and called on citizens to stand united against threats to peace and security.

    Rano LG boss sues for calm following violent protest

    The Chairman of Rano Local Government Area in Kano State, Malam Naziru Yau, has appealed for calm following a violent protest that erupted in the town after the death of a 25-year-old man, Abdullahi Musa.

    The incident, which occurred on Sunday, involved a confrontation between the deceased and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the area, CSP Muhammed Baba-Ali.

    The situation escalated when angry youths launched an attack on the Rano Divisional Police Station, allegedly setting it ablaze and destroying vehicles.

    The DPO was reportedly assaulted and led to his death in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

    Reacting to the development during a news briefing on Tuesday in Kano,the chairman condemned the violence and emphasised the importance of peaceful coexistence among the residents and security agencies.

    “We are deeply saddened by the ugly incidence. Violence is never the answer to any disagreement.

    “I urge all the residents to remain calm and allow the security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation,” he appealed

    Ya’u commended the police for arresting those involved in the violent protest and urged a thorough investigation to ensure the release of innocent persons

    He further assured the public that the local government was working closely with the security operatives to prevent a recurrence of such ugly incidents.

    The council boss urged the community leaders and religious clerics to engage with the youth and promote dialogue and reconciliation.

    The chairman commended the Kano State Police Command for its prompt action and the Commissioner of Police for visiting Rano.

    Ya’u also commiserated with the people of Rano Emirate over the death of the youth and the Nigeria Police over the death of the DPO, and the people of Nasarawa State.

    He concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to ensuring peace, security, and development across the local government area.

    NYCN demands probe into DPO’s killing

    Meanwhile, the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called for a thorough investigation into the killing of CSP Baba Ali, a Divisional Police Officer in Kano State.

    The Police Command in Kano confirmed the killing on Monday, along with the burning of the Rano police station.

    The DPO was reportedly killed by angry youths in Rano town, Rano Local Government Area, sparking widespread condemnation and concern across the country.

    In a statement issued on Tuesday in Kaduna, NYCN National President, Isah Abubakar, expressed sorrow and described the incident as a grave national loss.

    “CSP Baba Ali served with dedication and integrity. His commitment to peace and security must be recognised and remembered,” Abubakar stated.

    Abubakar urged the Federal Government to launch an impartial investigation, calling for cooperation among relevant agencies to reveal the circumstances of the officer’s death.

    He emphasised that the investigation must be transparent, keeping the victim’s family and the public informed at every stage.

    The NYCN president also demanded justice not only for CSP Baba Ali but for all Nigerians striving for safety and security.

    He called on the government to adopt measures that strengthen security forces and ensure better protection for officers on duty.

    “The death of CSP Baba Ali underscores the urgent need for united efforts against violence. Government must act decisively to prevent similar tragedies,” he added.

    Police arrest principal suspect in murder of Kano housewife

    The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old man, Shu’aibu Abdulkadir, in connection with the murder of a 22-year-old housewife, Rumaisa Haruna.

    The deceased was killed in her matrimonial home at Tsamiyar Duhuwa, Farawa Quarters, Kano on April 6.

    Abdulkadir, a resident of Madatai Quarters in Kano, was arrested on May 23 following weeks of intelligence-led investigations and technical operations.

    The command spokesman, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, in a statement on Tuesday, said the suspect confessed to the crime, admitting that he trespassed into the victim’s residence, strangled her, and stabbed her in the neck, leading to her death.

    “The suspect will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation,” Kiyawa said.

    A 35-year-old man Shu’aibu Abdulkadir has been nabbed by the Kano State Police Command for killing a 22-year-old, Rumaisa Haruna in her home.

     Abdulkadir’s arrest, came 47 days after the crime was committed following an intensive investigation and intelligence-led operations.

    The suspect was taken into custody on May 23, 2025, following the murder that occurred on April 6, 2025, in Tsamiyar Duhuwa, Farawa Quarters, Kano.

    Abdulkadir reportedly confessed to the crime during police interrogation.

    He admitted to trespassing into the victim’s matrimonial home where he “strangled and stabbed her in the neck, resulting in her death”.

    The deceased was discovered by her husband, Ibrahim Mohammed, with life-threatening neck injuries.

    She was rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.

    According to the commands Public Relations Officer SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, Abdulkadir remains in custody pending the completion of the investigations.

    The police also noted that he will be formally charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.

    “The suspect, currently in custody, is helping further investigation to ensure full justice is served,” the Command stated.

    While speaking on the matter, Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, urged residents of Kano to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities.

    “The Command assures the public of its commitment to safeguarding all residents and maintaining peace and order in the state,” the Police said.

    Police react as angry youths set station on fire over suspect’s death

    Angry youths in Rano town, Kano State, have set fire to a building within the Rano Police Divisional Headquarters following the reported death of Abdullahi Musa, a suspect,  in police custody.

    TheNewsGuru reports that the unrest came after Musa, who was arrested on Sunday for a traffic-related offence, died during police interrogation.

    However, the situation escalated when officers from the division allegedly fired live rounds at protesting youths, injuring two people, which further fueled the community’s outrage.

    According to residents, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rano has gained notoriety for allegedly using corporal punishment on his officers in public, a practice they said has contributed to growing resentment within the community.

    Following the outrage, youths reportedly attempted to raze the police station.

    The Kano State Police Command spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed downplayed the extent of the destruction.

    “The incident is not true; they tried to burn the divisional headquarters, but they didn’t burn the main headquarters. They just set ablaze a building by the side, not even attached to the headquarters,” Kiyawa said.

    In an earlier post on his official Facebook page, Kiyawa promised that the incident would be thoroughly investigated.

    “What’s happening in Rano town. The necessary measures will be taken to investigate by the grace of God.

    “Incident in Rano, thorough investigation will be conducted by the Grace of God,” he wrote in Hausa, translated into English.

  • Kano Govt. pays exam fees of indigent candidates with N3bn

    The Kano State Government has approved N3billion for the payment of the examination fees of 141,745 indigent candidates.

    The state government has also released  the 2024 Senior Secondary Qualifying Examination results.

    It has also reaffirmed its commitment to improving access to quality education and easing the financial burden on families.

    The State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Ali Haruna Makoda, disclosed this during a press briefing in Kano on Saturday.

    Makoda said the announcement aligned with Gov. Abba Yusuf’s Education Reform Agenda.

    According to him, the reform agenda has already seen the declaration of a state of emergency on the education sector and the allocation of 31.5 per cent of the 2025 budget to it.

    Makoda disclosed that the benefiting candidates were from public schools under the Kano Educational Resource Department (KERD), the Science and Technical Schools Board (STSB), and the Agency for Integrated Education Development (AIED).

    He stated that they had sat for the 2024 examination, with over 75 per cent qualifying examination as a prerequisite for the state sponsorship.

    “In 2023, a total of 125,000 candidates were sponsored by the State Government.

    ‘This year, Yusuf has graciously approved the sponsorship of all the indigent candidates who scored a minimum of five credits in the 2024 Senior Secondary Qualifying Examination,” he said.

    The commissioner said that the beneficiaries would have their registration fees fully covered for the 2025 NECO, NABTEB, NBAIS, and SSCE national examinations.

    Makoda said, “This is a timely and bold initiative by the Kano State Government to promote academic excellence, increase access to education, and ease the financial burden on vulnerable families.”

    He directed Principals to ensure that all theeligible candidates benefited from the scheme without any form of bias or obstruction.

    “They must access their rights unconditionally and with full transparency,” Makoda said.

    The commissioner said more details on the registration process woud be communicated to schools and the public through the relevant education agencies such as the KERD, STSB and AIED.

    “With this development, Kano joins a select few Nigerian states demonstrating a strong financial and policy commitment to supporting youth education.

    “This is not just about examinations,it is about shaping the future of Kano through an educated and empowered generation,” he said.

    Nigerian bride slits husband’s throat nine days after wedding

    A 18-year-old teenager simply identified as Saudat Jibril has been arrested by the Kano State Police Command after killing her husband, 30-year-old Salisu Idris, barely nine days after their wedding in the Farawa community of the state.

    The State Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa in a statement on Tuesday disclosed that teenager is currently in custody at the command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

    It was gathered that the wedding ceremony of Jibril and Idris, took place on Sunday, April 27, 2025.

    According to earlier reports, the marriage in question was arranged by the couple’s relatives and that there was a lack of mutual affection between couple.

    The deceased, Idris, reportedly had reservations about the union but was convinced by family members to go through with the marriage.

    While the details surrounding the dispute that led to his death remain unclear, community members allege that Saudat may have poisoned her husband before stabbing him during an argument.

    In addressing the alleged homicide, Kiyawa stated that Jibril “allegedly cut her husband’s throat with a sharp knife.”

    He said. “The victim was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel.

    “The suspect has been apprehended and is currently in custody at the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Homicide Section and will be charged to court for the offence of culpable homicide,” Kiyawa said.

    He further warned that the Command will not tolerate any form of violence or criminality in the state while assuring the public of its commitment to conducting thorough investigations to ensure justice is served.

    Meanwhile, the command has arrested a notorious suspect, Ali Dahiru, a 40-year-old male from Jaji, Kaduna State.

    The suspect, who posed as a taxi driver, was apprehended for allegedly operating a robbery syndicate along the Kura-Kano route.

    Kiyawa said the investigation revealed that Dahiru uses his green Golf 3 vehicle to rob passengers, using mechanical faults or fuel shortages as excuses to distract them.

    According to the police, 50 complainants have come forward and identified the suspect as responsible for their losses.

    “Acting on intelligence, Dahiru was apprehended and several stolen properties were recovered” the police said adding that “The suspect will face charges in court upon completion of the investigation”.
