  • Kano governor, Yusuf swears in council Chairmen, Councillors

The governor of Kano State, Kabir Yusuf has sworn in the newly elected chairmen in Saturday’s election in the state.
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) swept all the 44 local government chairmanship seats and 484 councillorship seats in the council polls, according to the result released by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).
Kano Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Bar. Haruna Isa Dederi, administered the oath of office on the chairmen at the African House of the Government House, Kano.
The Chairman of Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, Prof. Sani Lawal Malumfashi, issued the certificates of return to the chairmen, saying the certificate certified them to be legitimate leaders of their local government areas, respectively.
Speaking during the  inauguration, Governor Abba Yusuf emphasised the importance of the election which he said is in conformity with the Supreme Court judgment affirming the financial autonomy of the 774 Local Government Councils.
He charged the newly elected chairmen to assume office with immediate effect and hit the ground running by discharging their duties effectively and efficiently to deliver the trust reposed on them by the electorate.
He admonished them to lead with fear of Allah and be guided by the oath of office they sworn to as they will give account of their actions and inactions before their creator in the hereafter.
“As you may be all aware, in July, this year, the Supreme Court of Nigeria had delivered a landmark judgment affirming the financial autonomy of all the 774 local government councils in the country as a committed proponent of democracy and the rule of law.
“Our administration in the state immediately swung into action by activating the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, KANSIEC for the conduct of the local government polls as guided by the extant law and also proceeded with the dissolution of the Interim Management Committee.
“You may equally recall, when this administration took the mantle of leadership of the state, we resisted the temptation to dissolve the then existing local government council that we inherited, even though all of them were from the opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC). Not only did we preserve them, we never denied them any of their entitlements.
“Today, we have 44 duly elected chairmen across the local government and 484 newly elected councillors. I congratulate the leadership and management of Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, KANSIEC for a thorough and for the good job done inspite of unnecessary distractions by politicians who tried to stall the process for their own selfish interest.
“Let me also thank the good people of Kano State for coming out enmasse to exercise their civic duty peacefully and orderly manner devoid of any rancour.
“Let me seize this opportunity to call on the newly elected chairmen and councillors to lead with fear of Allah and be guided by the oath of office as you will give account for your actions and inactions before your creator in the hereafter.”

Just in: Court sacks all candidates of NNPP for Kano LG polls

A Federal High Court in Kano has sacked all 44 chairmanship and councillorship candidates of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for Saturday’s local government elections.

The ruling was delivered on Friday by Justice Simon Amobeda following a case filed by Engineer Muhammad Babayo and a faction of the NNPP against the party’s leadership.

Justice Amobeda ruled that the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) should accept a new list of candidates submitted by the faction led by the recognised State Chairman, Dalhatu Shehu Usman, in accordance with the party’s constitution.

“The defendant is hereby restrained from releasing the voters register for the 2nd Defendant to conduct the proposed election on 26th October 2024,” the judge declared.

He further instructed that KANSIEC must recognize the list of candidates submitted by the plaintiffs.

The case listed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), KANSIEC, the Inspector General of Police, and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) as the defendants.

The judgment has thrown the local government elections into further controversy. The court also barred security agencies from providing protection at the polling units if the election goes ahead without the updated candidate list.

“The 2nd Defendant is hereby directed to accept as genuine and subsisting the list of NNPP candidates submitted to it by the recognized State Chairman, Dalhatu Shehu Usman,” the judge ruled, adding that “any other list submitted for the 2024 Local Government Election in Kano State should be rejected.”

In addition, Justice Amobeda instructed the 3rd and 4th defendants—namely, the Inspector General of Police and the DSS—not to provide security for the election under the current arrangement.

“That the 3rd and 4th Defendants are forthwith restrained from providing security and protection to the scene of the Election plans to take place on the 26th October, 2024,” the court ruled.

Court nullifies attempts to halt LG election in Kano

The Kano State High Court granted the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) the authority to proceed with the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, nullifying all attempts by political parties to stop the exercise.

Justice Sanusi Ma’aji, presiding over the case, ruled that KANSIEC is empowered by the Constitution to conduct, supervise, and oversee local government elections across the 44 local government areas (LGAs) in Kano State. The case was brought by KANSIEC against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and 13 other political parties.

In his ruling, Justice Ma’aji emphasised that any effort to obstruct the process would be deemed null and void.

“KANSIEC, under the provisions of the Constitution, is mandated to hold elections in the state. Any attempt to truncate this process is a nullity,” he said.

The judge also called on security agencies to ensure the protection of lives and property during the election.

“It is crucial that security agencies urgently provide the necessary protection to safeguard lives and properties during the conduct of the elections tomorrow,” he ordered.

This ruling comes after a Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice Simon Amobeda, on Tuesday halted the council elections, citing the alleged illegal constitution of KANSIEC. However, the state high court’s ruling has now cleared the way for the polls to proceed as planned.

With this decision, Kano State is poised to conduct its long-awaited local government elections, with KANSIEC ready to carry out its constitutional mandate.

Defection: Senator Barau receives hundreds of NNPP members, says era of ‘red cap’ over in Kano soon

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has received hundreds of grassroots leaders of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying it would soon be rare to see someone with a red cap, the symbol of the Kwankwasiyya Movement in Kano State.

Responding to a question on the gale of defections rocking the NNPP in Kano State after receiving hundreds of grassroots leaders of the party at the National Assembly, he said the rate at which the NNPP members, including their leaders, are trooping to the APC is a testament to the growing popularity and support APC is getting in Kano State despite being an opposition party.

” I will continue to receive NNPP members rushing to join our party. Politics is a game of numbers. If you have a political party and members of other parties are not joining you, it means there is a problem.

“The NNPP members are attracted to the APC by our numerous interventions across critical spheres of our state and the country at large by the President Tinubu administration.

” At the formation of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu went across the country to woo people to the party. And this was why the party became popular in the country. We will continue receiving NNPP and other party members regardless of what some people say.
“Time will come. You will be looking for someone with a red cap, the symbol of the Kwankwasiyya, and you won’t see any in Kano. We will get there soon.

” We are doing this to lay a solid foundation for our party, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and others to win the presidential, governorship, national and state House of Assembly elections come 2027 in Kano and beyond,” he was quoted in a statement by his media aide, Ismail Mudashir.
