  • FG collaborates with World Bank, AfDB to construct 700 kms roads in Kano

    The Federal Government, in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank is to construct 700 kilometers of rural roads in Kano State.

    Mr Ubandoma Umarama, the National Coordinator, Federal Projects Monitoring Unit, disclosed this at a one-day stakeholders’ workshop in Kano on Monday.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop is on identification of intervention areas and selection of high priority rural roads for the ADB/World Bank-funded RAMP III in Kano State.

    Umarama, who was represented by Mr Aminu Mohammed, said the project was an initiative of the federal government, which when completed would address the challenges being faced by rural communities in terms of access roads.

    According to him, no fewer than seven states are currently benefitting from the initiative which is being funded by the World Bank and the African Development Bank (ADB).

    The current benefitting states, the national coordinator said, include: Adamawa, Cross River, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna and Osun.

    The federal government is playing an intermediary role in the projects which is expected to enhance socio-economic activities of the benefitting communities,’’ he said.

    In his remarks, Gov Abdullahi Ganduje said the project was in line with his administration’s commitment to improve the socio-economic activities of rural dwellers.

    He said the state had recently awarded contract for the construction of 500 kilometers of rural roads across the 44 local government areas of the state.

    Ganduje said this was as part of efforts to open the rural areas for economic development.

    Rural infrastructural development is aimed at lifting the living standard of rural dwellers, hence our decision to provide the roads for easy access to these areas.

    These projects, when completed, would not only link the areas to the local and state headquarters, but would also enable rural farmers to transport their farm produce to various markets in the state,’’ the governor said.

    Alhaji Usman Ririwai, the state Commissioner for Water Resources and Rural Development, commended the federal government for the initiative.

    Ririwai said that many communities in the state had suffered a lot due to lack of access roads.

  • Kano Assembly sets up committee to probe Emir Sanusi

    The Kano State House of Assembly has set up an eight-man ad hoc committee to investigate the allegations levelled against the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II.

    TheNewsGuru.com reports that Sanusi was accused of mismanaging N4 billion he inherited from his predecessor, Ado Bayero.

    The palace has since denied the allegation.

    Ibrahim Gama, the member representing Nasarawa constituency of the state, on Wednesday moved a motion to probe the monarch.

    Gama said some of the allegations against the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), ought to be looked into.

    He listed them as spending funds without the approval of the Governor of Kano, Umar Ganduje, attacking President Muhammadu Buhari’s polices and sending his daughter to represent him without wearing full traditional regalia.

    The house adopted the motion after it was put to voice vote by the Speaker, Alhassan Rurum.

    Labaran Abdul Madar, the chief whip of the house, will chair the committee.

  • Kano marries off 1,520 couples in mass wedding

    Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state, on Sunday urged the 1,520 couples who benefitted from the state government’s mass wedding to live in peace with one another for the union to last long.

    The governor made the call at a reception organised for the couples after the wedding which held in four Juma’at Mosques in Kano metropolis and at the headquarters of the 44 local government areas of the state.

    He said that the decision to conduct medical test on the prospective couples in the sponsored mass wedding, was meant to ascertain their genuine health status.

    “We decided to conduct the medical test because it was the best way to engender trust in the minds of the couples.

    “The screening conducted had been a success story as none of the couples was found to be carrying disease that will disqualify him from benefitting from the government laudable gesture,” Ganduje said.

    He noted that joining the couples in suspicious circumstances would make them distrust each other which might end up destroying the relation.

    Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, a renowned Islamic Scholar in Kano and Commander-General of the State Hisbah board, reminded the couples of the need to imbibe the fear of Allah in dealing with their marriage partners.

    He said that they would be made to account for what they did in the hereafter.

    “The mass wedding was consummated on the high expectation and commitment that it will last for eternity.’’

    He said that Islam forbids beating or abusing marriage partner on the premise that the conjugal union was consummated to instill happiness, love and mutual trust in the minds of each other.

    Also speaking, Shiekh Nasir Adam, the Chief Imam of Shiekh Ahamadu Tijjani Jumuat Mosque, called on the couples to imbibe the spirit of fairness as ordained by Islam.

    “In Islam nothing is ambiguous on how a husband and wife should live together devoid of unnecessary vendetta,”he said.

    NAN reports that similar reception was also held for the brides by the Governor’s wife, Hajiya Hafsat Ganduje.

    Stop preaching hate messages, Emir of Kano warns clerics

    The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has called on Muslim clerics to stop preaching hate messages in the Mosques.

    The Emir also called on Nigerians to live in peace and tolerate one another, despite their religious beliefs.

    The revered monarch, who described the practice as non-Islamic as non-Islamic, said the Mosque is a holy place.

    Sanusi made the statement while inaugurating an ultra-modern mosque at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State on Friday, January 28, 2017.

    The Emir also called on Nigerians to live in peace and tolerate one another, despite their religious beliefs.
    The monarch described it as totally against the tenets of Islam.

    He said, “Muslim clerics, and indeed all Muslims, should preach peace among the adherents and work to achieve peace with members of other religions.”

    He asked Muslims all over the country to unite and forge a common front for the propagation of the religion.

    Sanusi also called for religious tolerance among members of the two major religions in Nigeria, saying it was the panacea for peace in the country.

    Padding: Absence of Judge stalls Jibril’s case in Kano

    The absence of the judge presiding over Abdulmuni Jibril Kofa’s case against the National Assembly and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, on Tuesday stalled the sitting of the Federal Hignh Court, Kano slated for Dec. 20.

    The Kiru/Bebeji federal constituency sued the National Assembly and Speaker Yakubu Dogara, challenging the legality of suspending their member, Abdulmumini Jibril Kofar, from the National Assembly,

    Speaking to newsmen at the court, the lead counsel for Kofa’s constituency, Mr Bashir Muqaddam, said the Judge, Justice Idris Koko, had travelled out of the state for the Judges Conference, currently holding at the Federal Capital, Abuja.

    He said after returning from the conference, the Judges would proceed for the Christmas and New Year vacations.

    According to him, the judges are expected to resume on Jan.19, 2017 while the case has been fixed for Jan.18, 2017, for mentioning.

    “Our prayer seeks that the sum of N2 billion be given to our client, Hon Abdulmumini Jibril Kofa, as payment for damages to his reputation.

    “When we resume on Jan. 18, 2017, the case will come up for mentioning,’’ Muqaddam said.

    He said the constituency was challenging the legality of Kofa’s suspension by the House of Representatives.

    “We want to know whether his whistle blowing role in exposing how the 2016 budget was padded was in contradiction of any stipulated law of the land.

    “Fundamentally, we want an immediate re-instatement of the suspended member and the court to also order for the payment of all his (Kofa’s) entitlements for the suspension period.’’

    Also speaking, the leading complainant in the case, Alhaji Ibrahim Tiga, assured Kofa’s supporters who came to the court that they would follow the case to its logical conclusion.
