We’re hungry, end protests, street beggars in Kano beg

Some street beggars in Kano have appealed to the organisers of the ongoing nationwide protests to sheath their swords in the interest of humanity.

Baba Haliru, a 70-year-old beggar from Rigiyar Zaki, told NAN that survival has become extremely challenging due to the protests.

Haliru explained that many beggars relied on daily earnings to feed their families, but the protests have prevented them from doing so.

He lamented, “We have not eaten anything in our household of 14 for two days in the last four days except water.

”For God’s sake, please reach out to those who organised the protests to end them by negotiating with the government.”

Other beggars re-echoed Haliru’s sentiments, calling for an end to the protests and the total lifting of the curfew.

Malama Mario Kabiru of Hotoro quarters said: “We have run out of foodstuffs and we can’t go out to buy more.  We don’t have money, and the situation is unbearable.”

Malam Isa Musa of Dorayi quarters also appealed to the government to introduce measures that would  cater for the needs of elderly individuals who have no support.

He urged,  “We are begging because we have no one to support us. Since the curfew was introduced, we have not eaten anything in the last three days with our families.

”We can’t continue like this; kindly let the protests stop.”

Protest: Emir Sanusi condemns destruction of property in Kano

The Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sunusi  II, on Wednesday condemned the destruction of property at the Kano State Printing Press by hoodlums during the nationwide protests in the state.

Sunusi stated this shortly after an inspection of the affected sites including the NCC Digitals Centre to ascertain the level of destruction by hoodlums.

The emir denounced the acts, stating that the mission of these disgruntled elements was to destroy Kano, saying,” but by Allah’s grace they would not succeed.”

He emphasised the importance of taking proactive measures to protect lives and property particularly when credible security threats have been identified.

Sanusi expressed optimism that Kano State would overcome these challenges and bounce back for optimal growth.

He called for a thorough investigation into the incident, stating that it was clear that some individuals were hell-bent on destroying Kano.

He alleged that the youths who participated in the attacks were recruited by enemies of the state to act against the city’s interests.

The emir highlighted the historical significance of the printing press, which was built in 1933 and his family’s connection to it.

He urged Kano youths to be cautious of those who seek to harm the state and to identify their true enemies.

The emir also inspected the destroyed NCC Digital Centre, which was also vandalised by the hoodlums.

Sanusi’s visit and condemnation of the destruction demonstrated his commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Kano State and his determination to support the state’s recovery from the recent challenges.

Confusion as fire guts Emir Sanusi’s palace

A fire outbreak suspected to have been set by yet-to-be-identified persons has reportedly destroyed a palace at the Gidan Rumfa where the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, is occupying.

The incident, according to sources who spoke to Daily Trust from the palace, said it happened Friday night, around 11pm.

The source said one of the palaces located at Kofar Kudu where the Emir sits every Monday for court was seriously affected.

“It was the palace at Kofar Kudu. You know the palace has an entrance from inside while the main entrance is from the front (outside). The key was forced open and what was suspected was that they broke in, set the fire and locked the door.

“The throne, air conditioners and other valuables in the palace have been destroyed,” the source said.

When contacted the Public Relations Officer, Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusif Abudullahi said the command was not aware of the incident as there was no call regarding the incident at any of the agency’scentres.

However, the Chief of Staff to the Emir, Munir Sanusi Bayero, Dan Buram Kano, in a statement confirmed the incident.

He said, “On Saturday, 13th July, 2024 morning, a fire incident occurred at the outer court of His Highness’s Palace, Kofar Kudu. Fortunately, there were no casualties, and the damage was minimal.

“The palace is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of the palace and its occupants. We are also investigating the cause of the fire and taking steps to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.”

  • Kano Hisbah nabs own staff over same-s3x allegation

Kano Hisbah nabs own staff over same-s3x allegation

A staff of the Kano Hisbah Board, Idris Ahmed Gama, has been arrested after he expressed an opinion in an interview that the arrest of lesbiaπ, gay, bis3xual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) members by the police amounts to a violation of human rights.

The Commander-General of the Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Kano, stating that the state government has banned any group or association that promotes LGBTQ activities.

According to him, the agency has clamped down on many groups promoting LGBTQ in the state under the guise of empowerment.

He stressed that Kano distances itself from any agreement or association that contravenes the Sharia and Nigerian laws that prohibit same-s€x marriage.

Daurawa said the Kano State Hisbah Board had apprehended a staff member of the agency, Idris Ahmed Gama, whose video went viral on social media supporting a group suspected of promoting LGBTQ in the state.

The Commander-General urged the public, religious and traditional leaders, media, and all relevant stakeholders to join the fight against immorality in the state.

The apprehended staff member, Gama, explained that he was invited to a workshop via WhatsApp on women’s empowerment where a paper was presented on human rights.

He stressed that after the programme, during an interview, he mentioned the LGBTQ acronym without knowing its full meaning.

He denied being a member of any group or association advocating LGBTQ rights and stated that he was only invited to a workshop by a group named Women Initiative for Sustainable Empowerment and Equality (WISE).

“I was personally invited, and after the program, I was interviewed on how the police arrested LGBTQ members, and I said it was a violation of human rights.”

He appealed for leniency and promised not to associate with WISE in the future.

The Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act 2013 makes it illegal for same-s€x individuals to marry, enter into a civil union, or gain entitlement to any benefits of a valid marriage in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Kano State Commissioner for Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, said on Monday that the state governor had ordered a crackdown on all groups promoting LGBTQ activities in the state.

According to the commissioner, the activities of the group Women Initiative for Sustainable Empowerment and Equality (WISE) were a complete breach of the state’s moral standards and a violation of the Shari’ah.

The commissioner said the state government would not accept any agreement promoting the activities of gays and lesbians, as it contravened the norms and values of the people of Kano.

“I spoke with the governor, and he expressed his disapproval of the said agreement, though it has not yet been confirmed. He assured me that there is no room for LGBTQ activities in Kano,” Dantiye said.

“As you know, 98 percent of people in Kano are Muslims by faith, and our religion is against this immorality, so we can’t accept it,” he added.

The commissioner said the government had received citizens’ concerns over groups promoting LGBTQ activities in the state, and the governor had ordered the Hisbah to investigate and take action against these groups.

“We also discussed this with the governor, and he directed Hisbah to investigate and crack down on them. We will take legal action as appropriate,” he said.

Dantiye also disclosed that consultations were ongoing with religious leaders on how to curb such activities in the state.

  • Kano NNPP rejects Yusuf’s suspension, Kwankwaso’s expulsion

Kano NNPP rejects Yusuf’s suspension, Kwankwaso’s expulsion

The Kano State chapter of the All Nigeria Peoples Party(NNPP) has rejected the suspension of Gov. Abba  Yusuf from the party by a faction of the National Executive Committee of the party, describing it as illegal.

The party also dismissed the expulsion of the leader of the party and its presidential candidate in the 2023 General Elections, Sen. Rabi’u Kwankwaso by the same group.

The party described the suspension as “laughable”, insisting that it was carried out by some expelled members of the NNPP.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the NNPP Chairman in the state, Alhaji Hashimu  Dungurawa, sounded the rejection while briefing newsmen in Kano on Monday.

He also alleged that those that effected the suspension and expulsion were sponsored by some undisclosed ‘outside forces.’

Recall that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of a faction of the party had affirmed the six-month suspension of Yusuf and the expulsion of Kwankwaso from the party.

The resolution of the party was contained in a communique issued on Sunday, jointly signed by Umar Jibril and Omolara Johnson, following the NEC meeting held on May 27.

Dungurawa also described the purported suspension and expulsion as “unserious and of no consequence to the party, whatsoever.”

He wondered how an alleged sponsored group of expelled members of the party could suspend  Yusuf who is the only Governor of the NNPP in the country and expel  Kwankwaso, its National Leader, describing the action as “absurd.”

According to him,the leadership of the party genuinely mandated by members across the country would not be distracted by the action of the sponsored group.

He said, ”it is focused on developing the NNPP to continue to provide good governance to all Nigerians.

”The NNPP as a party, remains strong, winning more members across the country, in spite of the evil machinations of outside forces.”

  • NNPP denies writing to Senate alleging siege by FG on Kano

NNPP denies writing to Senate alleging siege by FG on Kano

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has denied writing any letter to the  Senate, accusing the Federal Government of laying siege on Kano State over the Emirate  leadership tussle.

This is contained in a statement by the NNPP National Chairman, Dr Agbo Major on Friday in Lagos.

The party is reacting to a letter written to the Senate, through its President, Godswill Akpabio by Dr Ajuji Ahmed on June 24.

The letter was titled: “Need for NNPP Federal Lawmakers to Make Urgent and Concerted Efforts to Immediately End the Siege on Kano State by Agents of the Federal Government.”

According to Major, the letter written by Ahmed was without the mandate and authorisation of the leadership of the NNPP.

” Dr Boniface Aniebonam is the founder of the NNPP, holder of the registration certificate of the party,  chairman,  board of trustees and a life member of the board.

“While Dr Agbo Major is the national chairman and Mr  Oginni Sunday is the national secretary, “he said.

“The NNPP stand remains that the Kano Emirate leadership crisis is an internal matter of Kano state indigenes under culture and tradition.

“Political party involvement under the circumstances is wrong. The principle of our party remains focused on peace of the society, development and wellbeing of the greater numbers of Nigerians.

“That the matter is currently before competent courts of law and jurisdiction and any interference by the National Assembly shall further complicate the situation.

“The avoidable tension generated as a result of the actions of the state government in Kano, necessitates the need for vigilance and enhanced security in the state to avoid breakdown of law and order,”he said.

“It is trite for Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf, Sen  Rabiu Kwankwaso and Elder Buba Galadima to understand that every court order must be obeyed first before complaint.

“The rules of engagement to vacate orders of the court are very clear and unambiguous.”

He said that it was necessary for the national assembly to align with the position that would guarantee protection of lives and property of citizens in Kano state.

” The NNPP as a registered political party in Nigeria is not interested in engaging in any controversy with the Federal Government and its agencies,  particularly security institutions.

“We should be responsible partners and law abiding citizens for the peace and development of Nigeria. The letter and any form of representation by the said Ahmed should be disregarded.

“In an ideal situation, it shall be the responsibility of the NNPP lawmakers to raise the matter on the floor of the national assembly.

“Like we said, the matter is in court and they should go to court, after all, the Kano state governor is in power today via the court.

“NNPP has no role to play because Yusuf is the governor of Kano state and not the party,”he said.

Major urged Elders and the elite of Kano state to come together and resolve the internal Chieftaincy crises.

“We wish to state that Yusuf should concentrate in providing quality leadership in Kano and distance himself from all  avoidable tensions in the state.

“We also appeal to the senate to disregard the illegal and inappropriate letter of the expelled members of the NNPP,” he said.

The Judge’s order stemmed from what she described as conflicting interpretations of her pronouncements and judgements allegedly by journalists, after taking interviews from lawyers.

According to her, since she has no powers to stop the press from doing their job, she would exercise her powers of stopping lawyers from granting press interviews.

“It is  my order for you (lawyers) not to grant any interview with the press before and even after my ruling on the argument on the pending appeal on stay of proceedings filed by the first respondent.

” Even if I can not stop the journalists from doing their jobs,  I have the power to stop you (lawyers) and that is my order, ” she said.

Tanko-Kyaure also urged the court to dismiss the applicant’s application with a cost of N1 billion.

Counsel to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Sunday Ekwe, told the court that he had nothing to present, adding that they left everything to the discretion of the Court.

Responding Counsel to the applicant, Mr Eyitayo Fatogun, urged the court to discountenance the respondent’s affidavit of facts pursuant to order 39 rule 1 and 2 of the Court.

“The motion refers to a proposed notice of appeal not a notice of appeal. It shows that the affidavit of facts is just to delay the proceedings. My lord the business of today is for the hearing of all pending applications.”

Fatogun urged the court to dismiss the third, fourth and fifth respondents application on the issue of Kano Emirate Repeal Law because the issue is not before the Court.
