  • ‘Nobody can hold me liable if Kanu doesn’t show up in court,’ says surety

Senator representing Abia-South District, Enyinnaya Abaribe, says he is not liable if the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, does not show up in court on October 17 for continuation of his trial for alleged treasonable offences.

Mr. Abaribe was one of three sureties in the bail for Mr. Kanu in the case. The other sureties are a Jewish priest, Immanuel Shalom, and an accountant and Abuja resident, Tochukwu Uchendu.

The IPOB leader who is currently facing trial for alleged treason, was last seen on September 14 when a clash occurred between members of his group and Nigerian soldiers on an army exercise in Abia State.

Mr. Kanu was granted bail in April on health grounds with 12 main conditions, most of which the Nigerian government has accused him of flouting. The trial is scheduled to continue on October 17.

Mr. Abaribe, during an interview on ARISE News on Thursday, alleged that the IPOB leader’s disappearance followed the invasion of his home in Abia State by troops of the Nigerian Army.

The senator said the army breached the deal they (sureties) had with the federal government by invading Mr. Kanu’s home before the court date, adding that no one could say whether Mr. Kanu is dead or alive after the invasion.

“He was supposed to appear in court on October 17. It was our job as sureties to produce him in court. We have been speaking with him.

“I spoke with him around August 23. I had to invite him to a meeting with the South-east Senate caucus in my home at Obingwa in Abia.

“We discussed and we told him what we felt and where he was going out of bound and we told him to confine himself to the laws of the land.

“Now, I spoke to him on September 14, and it was same day that the military moved into his place,” Mr. Abaribe said.

The senator said he had not been able to speak with Mr. Kanu since the incident at his home, because the number he used to reach the IPOB leader had been switched off.

According to him, nobody knows Mr. Kanu’s whereabouts presently.

“The real question is why will you go one month before his appearance in court to effect an arrest, to kill him or whatever?

“So we felt that you cannot hold me responsible if you didn’t wait for the date he was supposed to be in court.”

  • ‘Tell Buhari-led govt to produce our leader, Nnamdi Kanu,’ IPOB begs UN, UK

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Wednesday begged the United Nations (UN), and the United Kingdom to prevail on the Buhari-led government to produce its leader, Nnamdi Kanu whom the group alleged has been missing following military’s invasion of his residence in Abia State.

IPOB media and publicity secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful said that Kanu, who incidentally holds British citizenship, had not been seen since a detachment of soldiers stormed his residence on 14th September, 2017.

The statement said: “Ever since the brutal assault that left 28 persons dead inside his compound, including two of his cousins, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, along with his parents , His Royal Majesty Eze Sir Israel Kanu and Ugoeze Sally Nmeme Kanu, has not been seen.

“The video footage of the assault and the extent of destruction wreaked on his family home are in the public domain. Video clips and photographs of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s bedroom riddled with bullet holes from the guns of the Nigerian soldiers that stormed the palace are evident.

“The soldiers also took away a lot of valuable materials from the palace. It is the duty of the civilized nations to ask President Muhammadu Buhari, General Buratai and the governors of the South East what they did with our leader because we will not stop until justice is done.

The world has a moral duty and obligation to put an end to dictatorial regimes such as we are witnessing in Nigeria today.”

The statement described the ongoing Exercise Python Dance II in the South East as genocide, accusing the governors of the South East of collaborating with the Nigerian government to unleash mayhem against unarmed people.

The group also accused the Information Minister, Mr. Lai Mohammed of twisting the facts on the matter.

  • Why IPOB is a terrorist group – Defence Minister, Dan-Ali

    • We have no apology for proscribing IPOB – Umahi

Minister of Defence, Brig-Gen Mansur Mohammed Dan-Ali has explained why the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) was tagged as a terrorist group.

According to the Defence Minister, one of the characteristics of a terror group was hate speech, which Kanu and his co-agitators had been making against Nigerians and Nigeria.

The minister, while speaking during a courtesy call on the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations, in New York, the United States of America, Prof Tijjani Bande, insisted that the international community cannot determine the nation’s internal security problem.

“There are many indices that make a group terrorist. One of them that has been mentioned in the country is that any group that is fond of making hate speeches, making provocative statements, becoming a security challenge to the country, then that group has to be registered as a terrorist group,” Dan-Ali said.

He further added that the international community needed to look at what was going on in the country and know what IPOB was doing.

Speaking earlier, Bande thanked Dan-Ali for the visit, and said a lot of important persons come around, but are hardly seen in the Mission.

He said the fact that the minister created time to visit the Permanent Mission was something extremely important to the Mission.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the South-East Governors’ forum, Chief David Umahi has said the governors of the zone proscribed the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, to save the lives of over 12 million of Igbos living in the northern Nigeria.

Umahi, who is the governor of Ebonyi State, made this known while addressing stakeholders of the state during the 2017 Ebonyi peace day celebration that took place at Ishielu local government area headquarters of the state.

He said: “The issue of proscribing Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, alot of people were sending test messages to me. Some were commending us whereas others were condemning and abusing us and that is leadership for you.

“Our people must know that the issue of insulting the leaders of the igbos, it is not issue of the sitting President, is not about abusing other tribes.

“The issue of agitation and marginalization should not degenerate into self help and as governors of the south east, We make all efforts to bring peace. We meet as the 5 governors of the south east and proscribed IPOB.

“We did that to save the lives of 12 millions of igbos that are living in the northern Nigeria and other parts of this country. We did that and we have no apologies for saving the lives of not only the igbos but the lives of other ethnic groups within the south east zone.

“We need another state and local government to be like others in the other geopolitical zones. We must use dialogue approach and prayers to get what we need. We cannot allow our place to be a place for kidnappers and armed robbers.

“Our governors are committed to our youths, we have all agreed that our youths who have been mislead by IPOB ideology to be re-absorbed and reintegrated and keep them busy doing something with their hands.

“And to this effect, I ask the ministry of youths empowerment to open up a register for some of our youths who are mislead into this agitation and by my words, we are going to rehabilitate them and reintegrate them into meaningful venture in Ebonyi state”, he said.

The governor further noted that President Buhari had agreed to look into the problems of the South-East.

“Let me hint on this day of peace that we discussed all issues of agitations and would further the discussions with south-east governors.

“We would address all issues of concern with him (Buhari) under an atmosphere of peace as he sends his regarsds to Igbo people,” he added.

Umahi remarked that he was shocked by the president’s humilty as he listended attentively and applied humour which showed he has a good heart.

  • Biafra: Calm down, we can’t pull out of Nigeria now – Lagos lawmaker tells Kanu

A Lagos lawmaker, Mr Jude Idimogu, on Saturday, said it was too late for the Igbo nation to pull out of Nigeria.

Idimogu, representing Oshodi/Isolo Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, told newsmen in Lagos that secession would be injurious to the Igbos.

He said: “As a full-blooded Igbo man and a Nigerian, I believe, Igbo staying in Nigeria as an entity will prosper the Igbo nation better than pulling out.

“After the 1967 Civil war, the Igbo man started all over again to build up; now Igbo nation has made progress in terms of economy and politics.

“Though the Igbo nation has not reached where it is expected to be politically, we should dialogue rather than be creating war scenarios.

‘’It is too late to pull out (of Nigeria), Igbo nation has united Nigeria because they have businesses everywhere in this country,” the lawmaker said.

The lawmaker urged Mr Nnamdi Kanu, the Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to rescind from any action that could create enmity against Igbos around the country.

He urged the Igbo nation to unite with other ethnic groups in the country to articulate their grievances and actualised their dreams.

“My children were born in Lagos and some of them don’t even know their state of origin, they speak Yoruba and so many Igbo children are like that across the North and West.

“We have our future in Nigeria. The only thing Igbo nation should fight for is political power not by creating war scenario but by merging with other nations/tribes in Nigeria – the Northerners and Westerners.

“Most Igbos, over 50 per cent, don’t even believe in Biafra because they have counted the cost from 1970 after the war till 2017. No one wants to go back to square one; it is not possible.

“As a person, I am against it; what the Igbo man should struggle for in this entity are equality, fairness and justice, not pulling out.

“It is very late to pull out, it will be difficult because majority of us are not ready to fight any war; I don’t want to lose my life nor my sons and daughter in war; I believe we can make Nigeria our home,’’ he said.

According to him, even if the Igbo nation wants to pull out of Nigeria, it is not going to be overnight or by aggression, rather it should be via a friendly and democratic process.

“Kanu should calm down, unite with Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a tree cannot make a forest,” the lawmaker said.

  • Egwu Eke: Between Kanu and Jollof Rice

Egwu Eke: Between Kanu and Jollof Rice

    By Okanga Agila
Genuine freedom fighters anywhere in the world are known for a definite character. They fight and remain in personified expressions in words and actions. They do not run away; they do not go into hiding and dump adherents to languish in sorrow alone.
Social activists have their fate sealed by the beliefs and convictions in the cause for public good. It makes them impenetrable to bullets and guns. It melts the fire force of all armoury. They dare authorities in the face, without shrinking to defend their cause even at the risk of their lives.
This is the portrait you see in all social crusaders around the world. They come from different backgrounds or orientations and perhaps, may even vary in perceptions, but the system of the pursuit of social justice has uniformity. This is what you encounter in forces like the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr, the Afro-American civil rights crusader and his likes everywhere.
When he delivered the historic speech, which ironically turned out to be his last public address, at the Mason Temple, a Pentecostal church in Memphis, Tenn, April 3, 1968, decrying the injustice done to the protesting city sanitation workers in Memphis, King Jr knew he dared the authorities. But he was bold and eloquent, irresistibly beholding, as he harped for a change of the low pay and poor working conditions of the workers.
Less than 24 hours later, Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated. But he told the people to live and fight for their humanity in these words, “We aren’t engaged in any negative protest and in any negative arguments with anybody. We are saying that we are determined to be men. We are determined to be people. We are saying that we are God’s children. And that we don’t have to live like we are forced to live”.
Even in death, Martin Luther King Jr is worshipped by all mankind. He dared the forces against humanity, but did not take to his heels. But in Nigeria, the people are compelled to see a strange and very deceptive version of a freedom fighter, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). In the last two years, he has heightened tension in Nigeria, particularly in the Southeast region under the fake claims of fighting for the realization of a “Biafran republic.”
He gambled with reason and sacrificed wisdom on the altar of greed. He lured most of his people into an avoidable mess. He enjoyed the drama because it raised a platform for him to freely swindle his people. He barked violence at every point and swore that the “republic of Biafra” will be actualized through brute force. He established private security organizations – the Biafra Secret Service (BSS) and the Biafra National Guard (BNG) to militantly cage everybody.
Kanu massively recruited criminals into these organizations. He thereafter unleashed them on a hapless Igbo nation, as kidnappers/abductors, cultists, murderers, extortionists and armed robbers. These miscreants could do nearly everything criminal, laced in violence, including attacking worship places to either kill or rape female worshippers. IPOB security identified and murdered individuals opposed to the cause and style of self-determination as enunciated by Kanu and buried them in secret shallow graves.
BSS and BNG were all powerful and even dared physical confrontations with soldiers. Police officers were their favorite barbecue. They effortlessly murdered police officers in the line of duty, who attempted to enforce public law and order. Kanu dared soldiers or any security agent to attempt his arrest anywhere in Biafran land” and be roasted to death. He directed BSS and BNG members to raze Nigeria to ashes if his bail is revoked and he is re-arrested.
Listening to Kanu, you were prone to mistake him for a man with guts and someone committed to the cause he had hoodwinked all leaders in the Southeast to buy the meal ticket. He flamed with fake courage.
But how did Nnmadi Kanu funded the BSS and BNG or his operations generally? Kanu had exceptional skills in swindling his people. Some reports indicated that Kanu armed with the secession agenda allegedly approached the Igbo congress in the US to request money to buy guns and ammunitions to fight the Nigerian state. How much he got from the gamble is not clear. But there were overwhelming doubting voices. And he never learned from it.
But the criminal instincts in Kanu could have earned him a deal, as he first of all disparaged the Igbos in Europe as broke. He praised the Igbos in America, as more sensible. But certainly, they were not foolish enough to donate their hard-earned money into the sort of project launched by Kanu. They preferred devoting the monies to improving the living conditions of their impoverished people back home.
But Kanu argued that the problem of Igbo nation was all about identity, through separatism. He was not comfortable with their NO answer and could have probably pushed the funding at individual levels. But it is plausible the argument that Kanu eventually sourced for funding and that’s why he formed the BSS and the BNG, which he armed with weapons. So, he came back to Nigeria and became the untouchable, always spitting fire.
It was easy to say, Nnamdi Kanu was absorbed in his convictions. But it was far from it. When the Presidency ordered a military operation to cleanse the Southeast of these criminal elements who had infiltrated every nook and cranny of the region, Kanu’s emptiness and hidden agenda was exposed. At first, Kanu’s “troops” displayed some bravado by engaging the military in unprovoked attacks. Soldiers observed restraint, as “Operation Python Dance II” launched by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai had not officially commenced operations. Mere military patrols infuriated IPOB members who came out ferociously against soldiers.
However, Kanu’s underbelly was exposed when the Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQs) officially declared IPOB a militant terrorist’s organization, after a professional investigation of its activities. It listed several reasons including the raising of a private army by Kanu. The Southeast Governors Forum (SGF) also reviewed the operations of IPOB and discovered its multiple aberrations and slammed a proscription on it.
It was expected that Nnamdi Kanu would be courageous enough to stay and defend IPOB and the cause he murdered sleep for millions of people. But he rather exhibited the unexpected. He shamefully fled into hiding. That is not the mark of a genuine freedom fighter. It was paradoxical that Kanu dreaded death, but pushed armed Southeast youths to kiss their early graves. Since then, Kanu has not been forthcoming.
Kanu, the self-appointed cleric of the Biafran gospel, the one-time dreaded alfa and omega, the numero uno of the Biafran struggle, who rejected all entreaties to a civilized and decent manner of prosecuting his separatism agenda suddenly became effeminate. He forgot his avowals to have “Biafra” now or never. He was tamed so easily and that is how any agenda hatched on dubiousness perishes and fizzles out.
What is left of Kanu and IPOB is a cocktail of disclaimers of him and his organization from leaders, groups and institutions in the Southeast. The dirge was personally announced by “IPOB Media Strategist, Tim Elombah himself, who posted on Facebook thus; “Breaking! SE Govs, Senators, Ohaneze, Disown Kanu, Proscribe IPOB”. It was unbelievable, but true. Now, Kanu who plotted to invade Abuja to demand for President Mohammedu Buhari’s head to deliver at Umuahia is proscribed. Kanu’s guts have melted, with his vanishing shadows.
But operation “Egwu Eke II” (Operation Python Dance II) is ready for a dance with Kanu and IPOB. But it appears Kanu is not prepared for the dance. But viewing the video clips of Kanu and his brainwashed illiterates, who stoned an APC belonging to the military and attacked soldiers at a roadblock at Isialangwa, one thought they were ready to do the dance. It was possible to provoke the soldiers into vengeance, but there was no indication that anybody was murdered. One thought Kanu’s gods have consumed all the Nigerian troops like it happened in Nigeria at a time with Baba Alakyo in Nasarawa state.
But the comportment of soldiers was simply because the Army was under strict instructions of the Chief of Army Staff not to molest anyone, let alone kill anyone, no matter the depth of provocation. The cordiality of soldiers radiated the more when they arrested Kanu’s boys and offered them launch of jollof rice and fish, something Kanu had denied them throughout the struggle for a fake secession.
Let those who admire Kanu intimate him that true freedom fighters, do not runaway. Fleeing is an irrecoverable sign of defeat. Having done this, Kanu should perish the thought of his “Biafran” pursuit forever. He is free to scout for new strategies to swindle his people, but the tactics veiled as Biafran struggle has been demystified.

  • IPOB’s ban: Army launches manhunt for Nnamdi Kanu, begins probe of foreign links

IPOB’s ban: Army launches manhunt for Nnamdi Kanu, begins probe of foreign links

The Nigerian Army has launched a manhunt for leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, barely 24 hours after the group’s proscription.

Kanu’s whereabouts have been unknown since the proscription was announced.

The IPOB leader is on bail for alleged treason charges leveled against him.

The Nation reports that his bail sureties, might be asked by the security agencies to account for him.

Also, security agencies are investigating Kanu’s alleged foreign links.

Investigators are said to be analysing a video clip of Kanu and a Turkish citizen as part of the probe.

“Troops have been given a firm order to fish out and arrest the IPOB leader. As a prelude to it, the Defence Headquarters on Friday declared IPOB as a terrorist organisation.

“Intelligence has, however, revealed that Kanu might have gone underground. As I speak with you, troops have actually searched his house and he was not found there.Troops have a mandate to arrest him wherever he might be,” a source said.

Asked what if he is not found the source said: “We might follow legal process by holding his sureties responsible. These sureties will have to produce him.”

On the probe of Kanu’s alleged foreign links, another source said: “We are looking into the allegations of foreign support for Kanu. We are doing a profiling of his foreign contacts. We have some clues but we need to dig deeper.”

  • No reasonable Igbo man will support secession, Okorocha blasts Kanu

No reasonable Igbo man will support secession, Okorocha blasts Kanu

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, yesterday urged the Federal Government and citizens to treat the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, as an individual whose views do not represent those of the generality of Igbo.

No reasonable Igbo man, the governor said, “would support secession or division of the country.”

Okorocha who spoke at the new Yam festival organised by the

State Council of Traditional Rulers said that “everyone that loves Ndigbo has condemned the activities of IPOB.”

The Ooni of Ife, His Majesty Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who attended the function said he would not condemn the IPOB elements but would rather ask that they be made to channel their energy positively.

Okorocha said: “I can see that the unity of Nigeria is today dramatised in the land of Imo State. I say so because growing up as a child, I never knew where I came from because I found myself somewhere in Plateau State as a little boy and the only language I could speak was the Hausa language and I had no choice because that was where I was brought up.

“So, I grew up being born an Igbo man, but was reared in the North and was made financially buoyant in the South-West. So I have declared myself that in no way should I be found as a tribalised Nigerian. I will remain detribalised as long as Igbo gave me parentage and childhood, as long as North reared and nurtured me and for as long as Southwest empowered me. My community and my identity is Nigeria.

“The Igbo business men have more real estates and more properties and assets outside Igbo land than in Igbo land. So, I want to dissociate Igbo from this very thing that Igbo want to go for secession. A man that wants to go for secession cannot build mansions in Lagos, Kano, Plateau and the rest of the states.

“I think we should single out this act of this young man from the rest of Nigerians. My worry again stands strongly on the fact that today, the issue of IPOB is being politicised. Today, most of them that never worked with the Buhari-led government are using this as an opportunity to fight the federal government. Call those people to order. It’s not far-fetched who these people are. Some of them are busy visiting Kanu’s house and encouraging him. Those people should make a rethink, because they are not doing this nation any good.”

  • Biafra: If I were in your shoes, I will invite, dialogue with Kanu – Obasanjo tells Buhari

…Condemns military invasion of the the region

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said there was nothing bad if President Muhammadu Buhari invites and dialogue with the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, as a way of fighting a long lasting solution to the current unrest in the East.

The former Nigerian leader said this in an interview with Newsweek magazine published in the United States.

I don’t see anything wrong in that [Buhari meeting with Kanu]. I would not object to that; if anything, I would encourage it,” Obasanjo said in response to a question on the agitation for Biafra that has become violent with the military called in to quell the situation.

I would want to meet Kanu myself and talk to people like him, people of his age, [and ask:] ‘What are your worries?’ Not only from the southeast but from all parts of Nigeria.”

Obasanjo said that the response of the army response to the pro-Biafra sentiment is “not the solution,” but adds that the secession craved by IPOB is not the way forward either.

Obasanjo said Nigeria must avoid allowing the current tensions to escalate into another conflict..

Those who fought in the war in Biafra will not want to fight any other war,” he said. “I have fought one war too many in Nigeria; I don’t want to see another.”

  • ‘Kanu not hiding or going on exile,’ says IPOB over re-arrest threats

The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, has denounced reports circulating on social media that its leader, Nnamdi Kanu was on the run amid moves by the Federal Government to re-arrest him following an alleged violation of his bail conditions.

Nnamdi Kanu This came as Ralph Uwazuruike, founder of the Biafra Independence Movement, BIM, said the Federal Fovernment is using Nnamdi Kanu to destroy the struggle for Biafra.

In a press release issued by the spokesman of IPOB, Emma Powerful, the group dismissed the rumour of Kanu going into hiding as a “laughable fabrication designed to demystify our leader (Nnamdi Kanu).

“This wicked lie and malicious fabrication is the work of the enemies of Biafra, who enjoy their perfect slave status and will remain servants to Arewa North all their lives.

“These shameless individuals have allowed themselves to be used to advance the mission of the caliphate in Biafraland which is total submission to Hausa Fulani Islamic hegemonic domination,” the statement read.

The group, in the statement, insisted that Nnamdi Kanu was not ready to go on exile no matter the level of threats issued by the Federal Government, noting that IPOB remains the most vibrant and intelligent mass movement in the world.

“Our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has made it abundantly clear to all and sundry that he is not going on exile as a result of these childish threats. “IPOB is till today the most vibrant, indomitable and intelligent mass movement in the world.

“IPOB and Nnamdi Kanu cannot be intimidated by anybody or group no matter how highly placed they think of themselves. Our mission is to restore Biafra and nothing under the sun can stop us.” The statement also revealed that the agitation for the state of Biafra by Kanu shall not stop until a referendum is conducted in a democratic manner.

“Until the Nigerian government fixes a date for referendum to settle the issue of Biafra in a civilised and democratic manner, this raging agitation led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will continue. “We urge every Biafran, no matter where you are, to remain resolute and strong because Biafra is tantalisingly closer than we expect.”

  • FG using Nnamdi Kanu to destroy Biafra – MASSOB founder, Uwazuruike

The founder of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, has said the Federal Government is using the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to destroy Biafra.

In an interview in the current edition of The Interview, Uwazuruike accused Kanu of working hand-in-glove with the security services to destabilise the struggle for Biafra, starting with the forthcoming November 18 governorship election in Anambra State.

“Nnamdi is fighting against Biafra,” Uwazuruike said. “The security agencies have seen Nnamdi as somebody with a high value that they can use. They heard him shouting on radio and they approached him and he accepted to work with them.”

He continued, “No election in Anambra State is aimed at favouring the All Progressives Congress (APC) to edge out Governor Obiano through destabilisation; that’s the only thing and it’s being arranged by the security agencies, using Kanu.”

The MASSOB founder said it was regrettable that his efforts to achieve Biafra by peaceful means were being sabotaged by Kanu who has been hijacked by security agencies and some pay masters he refused to name.

In the interview, Uwazuruike said, “I know the mansions that Nnamdi Kanu and people like him have abroad…let Kanu keep disgracing himself like he’s doing now, because I know he’s being funded and I know those funding him.”

He described Kanu’s arrest and bail conditions as a set up, wondering why a man who was released on health grounds has not visited any hospital since his release from detention.

He criticised the Muhammadu Buhari administration for lacking the capacity to govern, saying, “APC won an election but didn’t have a plan to govern.”

Uwazuruike said former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, rigged President Goodluck Jonathan out of office, adding that, “If Jonathan had remained the president of Nigeria till today, the US dollar would not have exchanged for more than N50. Nigeria will still beg Jonathan to come back.”
