    Reports reaching TheNewsGuru.com, TNG has it that a fuel-laden tanker has gone up in flames at the Kara end of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

    The cause of the fire was not sure as at the time of filing this report.

    However, eyewitness account on social media confirmed the fire began as early as 1 am on Saturday without firefighters in sight

    Many motorists travelling out of Lagos were held in traffic.

    Some vehicles had been trapped in the inferno.

    Some motorists have also resorted to driving against traffic in order to avoid gridlock.

    Kara Bridge: Fresh fire delays opening Lagos/Ibadan out-bound lane

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says a fresh explosion from the scene of Sunday morning inferno, involving four vehicles on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, has delayed the opening of out-bound Lagos lane for motorists.

    Rescue operations that began in the early morning were still ongoing at the scene of the accident involving three tankers and a truck on Kara Bridge when another explosion occurred.

    Providing an update, Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide, FRSC Sector Commander in Lagos State, said the fresh fire affected the rescue operations.

    Ogungbemide, however, said that the situation had been brought under control, urging motorists to be patient and drive with care.

    “There was this fresh explosion from gas tanker (one of the tankers involved in the accident). The cover of the tanker opened and another fire billow up, but it is under control. We had restricted movements to the inward Lagos route for in and out motorists,” Ogungbemide told NAN.

    He said that fire services from Lagos and Ogun states “are on ground to bring normalcy back on the expressway’’.

    Ogungbemide had earlier said the rescue operations recovered a body burnt beyond recognition from the inferno while two persons were injured. He said that two injured had been moved to Gbagada General Hospital.

  • Four dead, two injured, as truck collides with commercial bus on Kara bridge

    Tragedy struck again on Friday on the Kara bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as a truck collided with a commercial bus causing the death of four persons while two others sustained various degree of injuries.

    Traffic report indicated that the accident involved a Sino truck carrying a container and a commercial bus.

    The truck with the number plate KMC 47 ZB, which was travelling to Lagos was said to have hit the commercial bus from behind which forced it off the road and it landed close to the river under Kara bridge.

    Six passengers were said to be inside the commercial bus, and four of them died due to the impact of the accident.

    The Public Relations Officer, Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the bus fell off the bridge due to the impact of the push from the truck.

    He said the driver of the truck was speeding and he lost control of the vehicle which made it to hit the bus.

    He said, “The accident occurred around 10.50am on Kara bridge. A Sino truck hit an Urvan commercial bus from behind and it fell off the bridge, landed at a point close to the river under the bridge.

    “Six passengers were inside the bus, two females and four males. Two females and two males died among the passengers while the remaining two were injured. “

    He said the corpses of the victims had been deposited at the mortuary in Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, while the injured were rushed to the Lagos State Emergency Hospital.

    The truck driver and his assistant were said to have been arrested and held in custody at the Ojodu-Abiodun Police Station.

    There was pandemonium on Wednesday at the Kara Bridge end of the Lagos Ibadan Express Way as a 20 feet containerized truck with unknown plate number rammed into a motorcycle with rider and two passengers.

    Investigations by the Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA) who arrived at the scene of the incident early this morning after receiving a distress call from residents revealed that the head of the containerized truck detached from it body while on motion inward Karra bridge and rammed into a motorcycle with the rider and two passengers while the head of the truck plunged into Isheri Olofi River.

    Unfortunately, a three-year-old boy on the motorcycle lost his life while his mother had a leg fracture.

    However, the mother and the corpse of the boy had since been moved to the nearest hospital by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC.

    According to the General Manager of LASEMA, Mr. Tiamiyu Savage, the head of the truck that plunged into the river was later recovered with the aid of the heavy duty equipment Crane with support from the local divers.

    Subsequently, three adult male were extricated and recovered from the truck head and handed over to FRSC officials who moved them down to the morgue.

    Other Agencies on ground for the rescue operation include; the Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Ambulance Service, Lagos State Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Police Force from Ojodu, Abiodun and Isheri Police Division and OP Mesa.

    Investigations have however commenced to unravel the cause of the tragic accident.
