Omotola, Kate Henshaw, others make Novia’s ‘Best actress’ list
Nigerian film critic and filmmaker, Charles Novia is known for his caustic and blunt criticisms when it comes to Nollywood.
His yearly ‘Best Actress’ list has become an activity actors, movie practitioners and the media anticipate every year.
Below is the 5 best Nollywood actresses of 2017, according to Charles Novia
NUMBER 5: KATE HENSHAW
After a hiatus of sorts, perhaps ‘building up’ somewhere (if the pun is noticed), Kate returned and showed her prowess in two movies in 2017; ‘Roti’ and ‘The Women’. Showing her trademark ability to interpret roles in genres, Kate had a point to prove with her return to the big screen. I was impressed.
NUMBER 4: ZYNELL ZUH
I later found out that Zynell is a Ghanaian after I watched her in ‘Hire a Man’. Doesn’t matter. She was quite good in the movie and I had to search her out in a couple of other movies in the preceding year too. There’s an intensity in her acting and this lady knows her onions (or would one say her jollof since she’s from Ghana!). One to watch, this Zynell.
NUMBER 3: SHAFFY BELLO
In the Africa Magic popular series, ‘Battleground’, Shaffy is a delight to watch as she interpretes her role with great panache and precision. She’s got one of the best articulation I have ever heard in the industry and though, she’s much too overexposed in other TV series too, she is quite an actress. Well done, Shaffy!
NUMBER 2: OMOTOLA JALADE-EKEINDE
A return to the big screen after some years in hiatus, saw Omotola sizzle in the movie ‘Alter Ego’ where she plays a mentally challenged lady with deep conflicts. She was also outstanding in the movie ‘The Tribunal’ as Arese. It was a good comeback for Omotola in 2017 and worthy of mention…and awards too.
NUMBER 1: OMOWUNMI DADA
I must confess I had no clue who Omowunmi Dada was at the beginning of the year. I kid you not. But seeing her in ‘Omugwo’ startled me and I began asking questions and got pleasant answers.
I backtracked to a few other movies she featured in over the years and also watched her much on ‘Jemeji’. This is an actress on the rise and one who will blow..or has blown? It doesn’t matter. There is a pristine naturalism in Ms Dada’s acting and she is a delight to watch. Two thumbs up. She’s my pick for The Best Actress in 2017 *Next: My Best 5 Nollywood Actors in 2017.

I am not bleaching, I love my skin- Kate Henshaw declares
Nollywood leading lady, Kate Henshaw is one role interpreter whose ageless beauty remains a mystery to fans. The actress has come hard on a fan who alleged that she has started bleaching.
The lady stated that Kate Henshaw has started bleaching, adding that it is good. Kate Henshaw in her reaction debunked ever bleaching, stressing that she is contented with her skin colour.
In her words: “You and who is toning, I like my dark skin.. scratch that… I love my dark skin” she said .
In recent times, some entertainers have resorted to bleaching their skins in order to further enhance their beauty .
In 2016,Lil Kim‘s new bleached-out pictures caused a stir on social media ,as many couldn’t seem to reconcile her former dark complexion with the new shade of her skin. The Grammy-winning rapper shared photos of herself on Instagram – rocking a blonde hair, puckered lips and her skin looking extremely fair.

Biafra: Kate Henshaw won’t get grand reception I received in Port Harcourt – Nnamdi Kanu
The leader of Indigenous People Of Biafra(IPOB) has said that Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw won’t get the kind of reception he recently got in Port Harcourt.
Kanu who made this statement in an interview with Kadaria Ahmed noted that despite Henshaw’s popularity and fame, she cannot command the kind of attention he got in Port Harcourt.
In his words:” I was at Port Harcourt yesterday; you should have been there to see what happened. They were delighted to see me I am sure you know that. They were very happy to see me. I bet Kate Henshaw won’t get that kind of reception. I am telling you, If I go to her village more people will run out to see me than turn-out to see her.”
Kanu‘s statement was a reaction to the question Kadaria Ahmed asked in the course of the interview, requesting him to react to a viral article attributed to Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw.
Unknown to them, Kate Henshaw had dissociated herself from the viral article on social media.
Kadaria Ahmed, like so many other individuals and media organizations, obviously mistook a certain Ken Henshaw [who wrote against IPOB’s agitation] for the legendary actress.
At the time of the whole Kate vs IPOB saga, a former minister of aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode who also fell for the identity error had openly lambasted the actress in one of his essays but apologized later on to Kate after realizing he goofed.

Basorge, Kate Henshaw finally reconcile
The entertainment industry erupted in joy yesterday, when finally movie goddess, Kate Henshaw and her Do Good comedy series boyfriend, Basorge Tariah, after months of not being on speaking terms, reconciled.
The duo reconciled at the 50th birthday Surprise Party, organized by Port Harcourt big boy, His Excellency, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, at the Villa Medicci restaurant in Victoria Island for Basorge Tariah who turned 50 four days earlier. Okey Bakassi had the mandate to invite 50 0f Basorge’s close friends.
Until yesterday, all efforts to reconcile Kate and Basorge, who were hitherto the envy of Hollywood actors/actresses, because of the special relationship they enjoyed, curiously as best friends, failed.
Indeed, Amaechi was to confess: “Until I saw it between Kate and Basorge, I didn’t believe a man and a woman can be the best of friends. So I was not happy that this special friendship was being rocked and the two of them not on speaking terms. Two of them are my friends and I want them to return to being best friends again.”
Daddy Showkey, Basorge, Julius Agwu and Mideno Bayagbon, Publsiher TheNewsGuru A mischievous Bovi who was one of the comperes was to throw a pointed jab at Amaechi: “Oga, if you can reconcile Kate and Basorge, it will give me hope that one day Wicked, sorry Wike and Amaechi can also reconcile! And the entire hall erupted in laughter. But the import was not lost. It is a near impossibility given previous efforts at it, to bring about a reconciliation between Basorge and Kate Henshaw.
Julius Agwu and the birthday boy, Basorge Bovi caught in the moment It was, therefore, not surprising the reconciliation did not come on any platter of gold. It took an engaged coercion, cajoling, pleading and willingness on the part of the duo of Kate and Basorge to forgive and let go.
A graphic sense of the animosity between the two had erupted and almost led to a walkout earlier in the evening. Neither greeted nor acknowledged the presence of the other.
“What is she doing here?” Basorge asked angrily when Kate walked into Villa Medicci, in her short designer dress and high heels which exposed her sexy, slim long legs.
“What is she doing here? Why is she here?’ he kept asking as he got off his seat to walk away from sitting on the same table with her. Kate who had a broad smile on her face as she walked in, was visibly angry, her large eyes brazen, when she set her eyes on her erstwhile best friend.
“I invited her,” Amaechi volunteered trying to persuade the duo to keep their cool.
Mudi and Bisoye Fagade Mayor Akinpelu and a friend Basorge, Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation and Kate Henshaw Amaechi was to publicly state how Kate was forced by him to attend the Surprise Party. “I asked Okey Bakassi to call her, and when she was told that it was a Surprise birthday party for Basorge, she flatly said ‘No, I am not coming.’ I had to call her myself to order her to come and she reluctantly agreed. But just when she was expected to come to the party, she called me to say that it was raining heavily, that she can’t come anymore. I had to insist that she must come; rain or no rain. I’m glad Kate eventually is here,” the Transportation Minister informed.
Debola Williams and Kate Henshaw Publisher of TNG flanked by Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi The reconcilatory moment:Basorge ,Kate Henshaw hug one another On her part, when it was time for goodwill messages, Kate bluntly refused to make any comment and when prevailed upon could only say, “thank you for inviting me. I wish you all best wishes,” and sat down to shouts of NO, NO, NO, say something. But she adamantly refused even when speaker upon speaker appealed to her to forgive and reconcile.
The ice was, however, broken when Basorge took the microphone, apologized profusely for whatever wrongs, right or wrong that he had committed against her. In an impassioned speech which brought not a few to tears, he insisted that though he has many friends, Kate Henshaw has always been and will always be his best friend.”
Of course the dams at this stage burst open, emotion climbing to a crescendo, as a tearful Kate ran and embraced Basorge, holding him tightly and exchanging whispered tears laden “l am sorrys.”
