    A former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, has offered his condolence to the families of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu and Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Coomasie.

    Babangida, in a statement in Minna on Friday, said that he received the news of the death of the two eminent personalities who served in his administration with shock.

    “I recall that Ibrahim Coomasie as Police boss was always proactive and tackled seriously every situation capable of disrupting peace and threatening lives and property of citizens.

    “The former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu was a ‘Fearless Jurist’ and former Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Coomasie, ‘a man of diligence’.

    “Both great men served the nation diligently at turbulent period of our live to keep Nigeria safe. They will always be remembered for their service to this country.”

    He described Katsina-Alu’s death as a great loss to the nation because he was a man of impeccable character, courageous and fearless.

    Babangida prayed that God would grant them eternal rest.

    He also offered his condolence to governments and people of Benue and Katsina states over the loss.

    “They were indeed men of diligence and uprightness. May their souls rest in perfect peace.”

    Atiku mourns Katsina-Alu

    Former Vice President of Nigeria Atiku Abubakar mourns the death of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, describing the news of his death as shocking and saddening.

    Atiku Abubakar notes that the late Justice Katsina-Alu was a remarkable patriot who served the country well both as a soldier and, later on, as member of the bench where he rose to the pinnacle of his career.

    “No doubt Nigeria has lost a remarkable patriot in Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu. My condolences go to the Katsina-Alu family, the people and government of Benue State and the Supreme Court of Nigeria over the demise”, Atiku said.

    He prays to God for repose of the soul of the late jurist and for his family to have the fortitude to bear the loss.

    APC mourns Justice Katsina-Alu

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the death of Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, a former Chief Justice (CJN) of Nigeria, as sad and an irreparable loss.

    The party, in a statement issued by Malam Bolaji Abudullahi, its National Publicity Secretary on Wednesday in Abuja, said the late Katsina-Alu was a great statesman, legal luminary and a patriot.

    It commiserated with his immediate family, the people and Government of Benue and Nigerians, over his death.

    The statement recalled that Katsina-Alu who served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from Dec. 30, 2009, to Aug. 28, 2011, was an impartial and thorough judge.

    “As a jurist, his contributions to the development of the Nigerian legal system cannot be quantified. We have indeed lost a good man who was non-partisan, honest and frank.

    “He delivered numerous landmark judgements, wrote many legal papers and mentored several young lawyers,” the statement said.

    It noted that as a statesman, the late Katsina-Alu often put national interest above self and other considerations.

    The statement further added that the deceased would be sorely missed, especially now that the country needed his wise counsel and stabilising voice, and prayed for his soul to rest in peace.

    The former CJN, who was 76, was a native of Benue and succeeded Justice Idris Kutigi as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in December 2009, through August 2011.

    Former CJN, Katsina-Alu dies at 76

    A former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, is dead, the incumbent CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, confirmed it on Wednesday.

    Katsina-Alu, was born on August 28, 1941. He was aged 76

    The deceased who hailed from Ushongo in Benue State, was the CJN from December 30, 2009 to August 28, 2011.

    The Senior Special Assistant to the CJN on Media, Mr. Awassam Bassey, in a statement said the death of the former CJN was confirmed while Justice Onnoghen was in Canada.

    The statement read, “A few of our colleagues have called this morning (from about 3:30am Montreal Canadian time) to seek confirmation of the death of former Chief Justice Katsina-Alu.

    “I can confirm that the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Mrs. Hadizatu Mustapha, sent me a WhatsApp message to that effect about an hour ago confirming the death of the former CJN.

    “I have just called the Chief Registrar to confirm that this is indeed the situation. That the Personal Assistant of the former CJN called her at 3.00pm Nigerian time to inform her of the demise.

    “However, it’s 3:30am here in Montreal, Canada, where His Lordship the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Mr. Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, GCON, and other Justices of the Supreme Court and Chief Judges of some states, are attending a conference organised by the International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law, and I haven’t yet contacted the Hon. CJN for his reaction.

    “I hope to do that as soon as he wakes up and get his reaction.”

    Details of the death of the former CJN were not contained in the statement.
