Joint security team rescues 11 kidnapped victims in Katsina

A joint security team in Katsina State has foiled a kidnap attempt and rescued 11 victims in Danmusa Local Government Area of the state.

DSP Abubakar Aliyu, the Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Katsina Police Command, said this in a statement to newsmen, on Monday in Katsina.

“On June 8, at about 10:30 p.m., a joint security team comprising Police operatives, Military, DSS, members of the Community Watch Corps and vigilante, on a routine patrol along the Danmusa to Mara Dangeza village road, Danmusa LGA, successfully foiled a kidnap attempt and rescued 11 kidnapped victims.

“The team encountered a group of armed bandits attempting to escape with their victims kidnapped from various locations within the state when a gun battle ensued.

“This led to the successful rescue of the 11 victims, comprising nine females and two males. The bandits fled the scene due to superior tactics and firepower,” he said.

Aliyu said that the victims were kidnapped from Damawa village in Kankara Local Government, Bakam in Musawa, and Danmusa town.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Bello Shehu, commended the operatives for their bravery.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment and collaboration with sister security agencies to fight the menace in the state.

He further urged the public to continue to support the efforts of the command, as well as other security agencies by timely reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

PDP faction plans coalition to unseat APC

A faction of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina has revealed plans to join another party to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.

The faction’s leader, Alh. Mustapha Inuwa, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Katsina on Sunday with party members and supporters in attendance.

Inuwa, a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), was also a governorship aspirant under the APC during the 2023 general elections.

He said the aim is to end APC rule at both state and national levels in the 2027 elections through a new political alliance.

The meeting, he explained, was to inform members about the situation and stress the importance of establishing an alternative political platform.

Inuwa stated, “The coalition is working nationally with political heavyweights to form a solid, viable, and dependable platform capable of challenging the APC.”

He added that, God willing, a decision on the new platform will be finalised by the end of June by the movement’s leadership.

He urged loyal supporters to stay calm, continue backing the group, and pray for its success and the progress of Nigeria as a whole.

He called on all progressive-minded individuals, regardless of political affiliation, to join the movement in pursuit of their shared vision and goal.

“Once we decide on the platform, we’ll reconvene here and follow the template provided by the national leadership for local implementation,” he said.

Inuwa advised supporters not to worry about defections to APC, likening it to leaving the frying pan only to land in the fire.

He explained that defecting from PDP to APC offers no real solution, as both parties share similar internal problems, especially during their congresses.

He criticised Katsina’s local elections, claiming forms were only issued to government-approved candidates, suggesting future elections will follow the same flawed pattern.

“Our major concern remains the electorate, who are with us. We are with them. God willing, we will succeed,” Inuwa said.

NYSC extends service of 2 Katsina corps members

The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) says it has extended the service of two corps members in the 2024 Batch ‘B’ Stream one.

The state NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Sa’idu, confirmed the development in Katsina on Thursday.

According to Sa’idu, the corps members were given extension of service for various degrees of offences that contravene the NYSC bye-law.

He also said that two other corps members, Niss Adeifan-Eniebukun, and Joshua Amoswere-Agwale, were given state recognition for their outstanding performance.

He said that the two outstanding corps members were recognised “for executing various community-oriented projects in their host communities”.

Sa’idu said that during their passing out on Tuesday, which was low-key, 558 corps members received their Certificate of National Service, following their successful one-year mandatory service.

He urged the corps members to leverage the lessons they gained during the in-camp training on the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SEAD) programme.

He advised them to establish themselves gainfully instead of being idle and waiting for government jobs that are no longer available.

He advised the corps members to start doing something with what they have learnt under the post-camp SEAD training and not to procrastinate.

WAEC: English paper should be cancelled – Katsina Govt

The Katsina State Government on Saturday called for the cancellation of the English language examination recently conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

The call followed an incident which led to the commencement of the examination several hours behind the scheduled time nationwide on Wednesday.

The position of the state was announced in Katsina by Hajiya Zainab Musa-Musawa, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education during a visit to the WAEC office in Katsina.

The position was based on a petition signed by Hajiya Ummukhair Ahmed, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry.

Recall that WAEC blamed the situation on heightened efforts to curb examination malpractice, particularly the leakage of question papers.

“Students had to write the examination at night without light until torch lights, handsets lights, security lights were provided,” she said.

Musa-Musawa also called on schools, parents and the communities to exercise patience and wait for the outcome of the petition.

  • Two years in office: I am now caged; leadership is difficult – Gov Radda

Two years in office: I am now caged; leadership is difficult – Gov Radda

Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has said leadership is difficult, urging that leaders must endure criticisms and other abuses by some members of the public.

The Governor stated this in Katsina on Thursday during a special prayer session organised by the state government to mark the two years of his administration.

In his speech, Radda highlighted the challenges of the job but assured to remain focused and honest in the discharge of his service.

According to him, the people commending the effort and commitment of his administration are more than those criticising his government.

He added that as a human being, a leader must make mistakes, but the most important was that the good deeds should exceed the wrongdoing.

According to Radda, the money managed by the government belongs to the people and that government officials are merely caretakers.

“I am now caged, sometimes I find it difficult to go about my normal life, because I will be blocked. When I go out from house in the morning, mostly I will not go back until bed time.

“Therefore, I always tell people that the job is difficult, it needs dedication and commitment.

Although, anywhere we visit, the people give us warm welcome, we are really happy with that and this is what gives us more courage to do the right thing.

“In such a situation, where people are hailing and saying good things about you, if you betray them, definitely God will deal with you,” the governor said.

According to him, his door is always open for advice and suggestions, admonishing, “due to their closeness with the people, the religious leaders should always inform him what they are hearing from the public.”

He called on them to support the fight against insecurity at the community levels, especially by fishing out the informants and drug dealers in their communities.

Radda said that the event, attended by top government officials, Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders, was a moment of reflection and gratitude.

He emphasised that the occasion was not a celebration of power, but rather an opportunity to thank Allah and acknowledge that leadership is a trust, not a trophy.

The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abdullahi Garba-Faskari, stated that about 75 per cent of the administration’s goals had already been achieved.

He attributed the myriad of successes recorded within the two years to the government’s purposeful and disciplined approach.

Also, Alhaji Abdulkadir Mamman-Nasir, the Chief of Staff to the governor, revealed that over 140 experts had contributed to shaping the governor’s development plan.

He stated that the next phase of the administration would focus more on empowering people, rather than capital projects.

Katsina CSOs raise alarm over healthcare staff shortages

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Katsina has raised alarm over a significant human resource gap across the primary and secondary healthcare levels in the state.

The coalition expressed its concerns on Tuesday in Katsina during a press briefing by its Chairman, Malam Abdulrahman Abdullahi, who was assessing Gov. Dikko Radda’s two years in office.

He acknowledged some achievements in the health sector but highlighted persistent challenges that could hinder the administration’s overall objectives.

Abdullahi noted that two key facilities, Turai Yar’adua Maternity and Children Hospital and General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital (GARSH), were severely affected by brain drain.

“This is largely due to certain administrative actions, especially by the agency overseeing the facilities,” he said.

He explained that many qualified, high-ranking, and hard-to-replace health professionals, including consultants, nurses, and technologists, had left due to poor welfare conditions, wrongful postings, retirements, or better opportunities elsewhere.

“Unfortunately, there has been no adequate recruitment to fill these vacancies, resulting in a significant staff shortage and placing an overwhelming burden on the few remaining workers.

“Some departments now operate below the minimum staffing levels required for standard service delivery.”

Abdullahi also highlighted a serious funding gap that threatened efficient healthcare delivery.

“The sector suffers from inadequate budgetary allocations and delayed release of approved funds.

“At Turai Yar’adua Maternity Hospital, financial constraints have led to the abandonment of basic standards.

“In many cases, prescriptions are written on plain sheets of paper, and patients must buy exercise books to document their care, undermining professionalism and proper record management,” he said.

He added that funding shortages had impacted equipment, facilities, and consumables.

“At GARSH, essential diagnostic equipment such as MRI and CT scan machines are non-functional, with no funds available for repairs or replacements.

“This forces patients to seek services in private hospitals or travel out of state, often at unaffordable costs.

“These conditions compromise patient care and erode public confidence in the state health system,” Abdullahi explained.

He said beyond GARSH and Turai Yar’adua Hospital, many general and primary healthcare facilities across Katsina continued to operate without basic modern medical tools and life-saving equipment.

“This limits their ability to provide comprehensive care, especially in emergencies, leading to avoidable referrals and fatalities.

“In spite of these challenges, the coalition acknowledged the administration’s political will in sustaining key health initiatives, including the Contributory Healthcare Scheme under the state Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KATCHMA).”

Abdullahi commended the government for efforts to reduce healthcare expenses indirectly for civil servants and the public through the scheme, though he noted that the state had yet to fulfil its financial obligations as an employer.

“This undermines the scheme’s sustainability and credibility, reducing the number of beneficiaries.

“Currently, only civil servants’ contributions are funding services, while the state’s employer contributions are still awaited,” he said.

He also lauded the government for renovating selected primary health care centres, rehabilitating dormant health facilities, and upgrading some primary healthcare centres to general hospitals.

“These efforts, aimed at achieving one functional health facility per ward and Universal Health Coverage for rural communities, are commendable,” Abdullahi stated.

He pointed out that the ongoing construction of a Dialysis Centre at GARSH was another vital project that would improve access to affordable renal care in the state.

“Once completed, the centre is expected to significantly reduce costs and travel burdens for dialysis patients, ultimately saving the lives of vulnerable citizens.”

    Hisbah denies assaulting Katsina lady

The Katsina State Hisbah Board has dismissed a report of alleged assault on a lady, Hauwa’u Lawal, by its personnel.

Malam Mohammad Shu’aibu, the Deputy Commander General Operations of the board, gave the clarifications at a news conference on Sunday in Katsina.

Lawal, in a viral video clip, accused the operatives of the board of beating her that caused a fracture on her leg and injuries impairing her hearing ability.

The lady said that the incident occurred when she visited her brother, who was in the custody of the board.

In a swift reaction, Shu’aibu confirmed the arrest of one suspect, who is a brother to the lady,

He said the suspect was arrested for interfering with the operation of the operatives while on duty, and parading himself as a soldier.

“She was stopped from going in because of the nature of her immoral dressing, but she insisted and attempted to slap one of the personnel.

“The suspect also presented an identity card which expired in 2023, carrying Ex-boy.

“During an operation at one of the event centres in Katsina city, some youths hurled stones at the personnel, where the suspect described them as unprofessional,

“The personnel while trying to calm the situation, asked the suspect to identify himself, and he claimed to be a soldier, which at the end we realised he was not.

“Also, an x-ray of the fractured leg has been requested from the suspect’s family to prove their claims, but none is yet to be presented to the board,” he said.

Shu’aibu said the board was mandated to fight immortality in the society, adding that it also trained its personnel to be civil, disciplined and professionals in discharging their duties.

Also commenting, Hadiza Yar’Adua, Commissioner for Women Affairs, said the ministry was investigating the matter.

“Once the investigation is complete, we will forward our findings to the relevant authorities for appropriate action,” she said.
