    Police rescue 14 passengers from bandits in Katsina

    The police operatives in Katsina State have successfully rescued 14 passengers from kidnapping by bandits in Dan’arau village, in Magama-Jibia, Jibia local government area.

    The police spokesperson of the command, ASP Abubakar Aliyu, who stated this in a statement, said that the incident occurred on Sunday at about 7:55 p.m.

    Aliyu explained that suspected armed bandits attacked two commercial vehicles on the road with the intent of abducting the occupants.

    “On Nov. 24, 2024, at about 7:55 p.m., suspected armed bandits, armed with dangerous weapons, shooting sporadically, attacked two commercial vehicles at Dan’arau village on Magama-Jibia road in Jibia, in an attempt to kidnap the occupants.

    “Upon receipt of the information, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jibia, led a team of operatives to the scene and engaged the bandits in a fierce gun duel.

    “The team successfully foiled the kidnapping attempt, and rescued the 14 passengers,” he said.

    Aliyu, however, said two rescued victims suffered gunshot injuries and were rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention.

    “Unfortunately, one of the victim succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment,” Aliyu revealed.

    He said that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects as the investigation proceeds.

    The state Commissioner of Police, CP Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, while commending the officers’ exceptional display of gallantry and dedication to duty, charged them to sustain the tempo.

    He further urged the public with useful information on suspected criminals activities to continue to report to the nearest police station promptly.

    First Class graduate hawking pure water offered employment

    Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has offered immediate employment to Sham’unu Ishaq, a First Class graduate of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University who was discovered selling sachet water.

    This was announced in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the governor, Malam Ibrahim Kaula in Katsina on Friday.

    A video of Ishaq has been going round on social media revealing that he was selling pure water to support his family. According to Kaula, upon learning of Ishaq’s situation, Radda promptly directed his Special Assistant on Students Matters, Alhaji Muhammad Nagaske, to verify the authenticity of the viral video.

    “Subsequent investigation confirmed that Ishaq indeed graduated with First Class honors in B.Sc (Ed.) Education/Biology during the 2021/2022 academic session, as verified by the University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor.

    “Ishaq, who completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme in Taraba State, had resorted to selling pure water to meet personal and family obligations. Academic excellence should be rewarded, not relegated to the streets.”

    According to Kaula, this latest intervention aligns with Radda’s consistent drive to reward academic excellence and promote quality education in Katsina State.

    He explained that on Oct. 12, 2024, the governor demonstrated similar commitment by offering automatic employment to nine outstanding graduates of Isah Kaita College of Education, Dutsinma.

    “Additionally, the governor offered another direct employment to nine First Class Graduates from Umaru Musa Yar’adua University during the 9th/13th combined convocation held on May 26, 2024.

    “Our administration recognises that the future of Katsina State lies in harnessing the potential of our brightest minds”, the statement added.

    6 vehicles destroyed as gas explosion rocks Katsina

    Gas cylinders conveyed in a truck have exploded at a Filling station in Jibia Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State, causing damage to about six vehicles.

    The police spokesman in the state, ASP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu disclosed this in a statement issued in Katsina on Friday.

    He said that on November 15, a loud explosion was heard by police operatives attached to Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters and promptly the DPO led a team in collaboration with the military, to the scene.

    “Upon arrival operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia road.

    “The joint team swiftly deployed preventive measures to protect lives and minimise property damage, successfully quenching the fire.

    “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost,” he said.

    According to him, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion.

    Sadiq-Aliyu explained that further developments will be communicated as the investigation proceeds.

    SAD: 15 die, 13 injured in Katsina road crash

    At least, 15 persons have been confirmed dead in a road crash on Funtua-Gusau road, in Funtua, Katsina State, by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Command in the State.

    The FRSC Sector Commander, Mr Aliyu Ma’aji, confirmed the accident in a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Shamsudeen Babajo, on Saturday in Katsina.

    He said that the accident, which occurred on Saturday, involved a Toyota Hiace and Dangote truck. Ma’aji said that it was a result of a tyre bust by the Toyota bus, leading to a loss of control and a head-on collision.

    According to him, the crash claimed the lives of 15 persons with 13 others sustaining various degrees of injuries.

    The Sector Commander said that the victims were taken to Funtua General Hospital by the corps of Funtua Unit Command patrol team.

    Ma’aji called on motorists to always monitor the conditions of their tyres before embarking on a journey.

    He urged them to avoid speeding, overloading and reckless driving, as part of measures to avert road accidents.

    Katsina Police foil kidnap attempt, rescue 21 victims

    The Police Command in Katsina says it has foiled simultaneous attacks on three quarters in Jibia Township, Jibia Local Government Area of the state and rescued 21 abducted victims.

    ASP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, the Command’s Spokesman, who disclosed this in a statement in Katsina on Friday, said the efforts were in collaboration with the Army, members of the State Community Watch Corps, and Vigilantes.

    He said: “In a swift and coordinated response, we successfully foiled simultaneous bandits’ attacks at Ka’ida, Unguwar One Boy, and Danmarke quarters in Jibia Township, Katsina State, on Nov. 7.

    “At about 9:15 pm on Thursday, suspected armed bandits launched coordinated attacks on the two communities.

    “However, the swift response of the joint security team led by the DPO Jibia repelled the attackers, resulting in a fierce gun duel that lasted for over an hour.

    “The superior firepower and tactical advantage of the joint security team eventually forced the bandits to retreat with unspecified casualties as the operation resulted in the successful rescue of 16 victims trapped by the bandits.”

    Sadiq-Aliyu regrettably said that another five persons rescued sustained gunshot injuries as a result of the bandits’ attack, and they were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

    The police spokesman added that: “Sadly, one member of the state’s security outfit, and a vigilante member lost their lives during the encounter, paying the ultimate price,” he said.

    The spokesmen assured that further development would be communicated in due course.

    “The command, in collaboration with sister security agencies, while working closely with all relevant stakeholders, is intensifying efforts to ensure the arrest of the perpetrators of this dastardly act.”

    “The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Aliyu Abubakar-Musa reassures the public of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state,” Sadiq-Aliyu said.

    Gov Radda to sustain transport subsidy in Katsina

    Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has promised to sustain the extant subsidy on intra and inter-city journeys in the State.

    Radda stated this on Thursday at the launching of new sub-stations for the State Transport Authority, (KTSTA), in Mashi and Ingawa Local Government Areas (LGAs).

    According to the governor, the aim was to make long-distance transportation affordable and accessible for travelers across the state.

    He further explained that the stations would serve as parking and take-off points for KTSTA vehicles in the local government areas.

    The governor said the expansion of KTSTA services to other parts of the state was aimed at easing the transport fare in the face of the high petrol prices.

    He commended the KTSTA management under the leadership of Alhaji Haruna Musa-Rugoji for ‘transforming the agency’.

    Earlier, the KTSTA General Manager, Musa-Rugoji, said the sub-stations were designed with large parking spaces, office accommodation, waiting rooms and verandas to make them conducive for passengers and officials.

    He explained that the two new sub-stations would decongest the stations in Daura and Katsina, hence bolster transportation to other parts of the state and beyond.

    Musa-Rugoji disclosed that the agency plans to launch new sub-stations in major towns in order to bring public transport closer to the people.

    According to him, the agency will continue to purchase new vehicles to provide more revenue to the state and affordable transportation services to the people.

    Soldier killed in Katsina in questionable circumstances

    The Defense Headquarters says a Naval personnel deployed at FOB Dansadua for Operation FANSAN YAMMA, in questionable circumstances opened fire sporadically and killed a colleague.

    The Director, Defense Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, in a statement on Friday, said the incident happened on Friday at about 0312hrs in Dansadau area of Katsina State.

    Buba said the personnel identified as Leading Seaman Akila A, has been arrested, disarmed and detained, and investigation into the incident had commenced.

    According to him, after investigation, the case will be escalated to a standing court martial which is usually setup to address such misdemeanor among troops.

    “Meanwhile, the administrative procedure for notifying the family of the deceased is ongoing.

    “It is for this reason, his name is not yet released to the public. Nevertheless, the name will be released in due course.

    “Accordingly, we urge the media to exercise caution in reporting in order not to further demoralise the family of the deceased,’’ he said.

    Katsina generates over N2bn revenue in Sept

    The Katsina State Government says it has generated N2.024 billion as Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) in September.

    This is contained in a statement on Friday by Alhaji Sada Shu’aibu, Director, Corporate Communication of the State Internal Revenue Board.

    The director quoted the Executive Chairman of the board, Alhaji Muhammad Isiyaku as saying this in Katsina.

    The chairman recalled that the board had generated N1.80 billion in July and N1.85 billion in Aug.

    He described the feat as impressive, linking it to the blocking of leakages and the introduction of the Central Billing System by the state government.

    Isiyaku said that the feat would be maintained to ensure that the state  government gets enough funds to execute people-oriented projects in the state.

    He further pledged the state government’s determination to generate improved IGR for the state.

    Commending Gov. Dikko Radda for his support, Isiyaku also appreciated the state Ministry of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, and other relevant MDA’s for their cooperation.

    Isiyaku also urged the staff of the revenue agency to work tirelessly to achieve the objectives of the board.

    He, however, cautioned them against engaging in fraudulent activities, as anybody found wanting would be sanctioned, accordingly.

    Isiyaku recalled that when he came on board in Nov. 2023, the IGR was between ₦700 and 800 million, but by July 2024, about N1.85 billion was generated.

    Katsina probes Governor’s office inferno

    The Katsina State Government has set up a committee to investigate a fire outbreak that occurred in a part of the Governor’s office at the Muhammadu Buhari House on Monday.

    Abdullahi Aliyu-Yar’adua, the Director, Press, office of the Secretary to the State Government, announced this in a statement in Katsina on Monday.

    The fire outbreak, which occurred in the early hours, damaged the Mini Chamber attached to the Governor’s office.

    Aliyu-Yar’adua said firefighters from both Federal and state offices were able to control the fire blaze before it escalated. According to him, the source of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

    He said that the committee would find out the cause of the fire outbreak, extent of the damage, and identify lapses, if any, that led to the incident.

    The director added that the committee was given the mandate to also recommend ways to avert recurrence.

    Katsina PDP elects new executives

    Alhaji Nura Mohammed-Kurfi has emerged Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina State. Mohammed-Kurfi and 30 other officials were elected at the State Congress held on Saturday in Katsina.

    The election was conducted by a 12-man committee from the party’s headquarters, Abuja, under the Chairmanship of Mr Sa’idu Bello.

    Recall that the party had earlier conducted its congresses at ward and local government levels, before conducting the state congress.

    Announcing the results, the congress committee chairman declared Alhaji Magaji Lawal as Vice Chairman, while Sanusi Aliyu was returned as the new Secretary of the party.

    He added that Muhammad Nuraddeen clinched the position of Legal Adviser, Umar Tijjani, Publicity Secretary, Haruna Aliyu, Organising Secretary, Hussaina Ahmed, Women Leader, while, Abubakar Yusuf, is the new Auditor, among others.

    In his acceptance speech, the new chairman, thanked the party leaders, delegates, members and all stakeholders for their continued support to the party.

    He called on the party members to remain united and forge ahead for the progress of the party.

    The new chairman pledged to run an open door policy to enable the party restrategise towards winning the 2027 elections.

    While stressing the importance of discipline, the chairman urged members to continue to remain loyal to the leadership for the progress of the party.

    Also speaking, Sen. Lado urged people to join PDP being the only party with the wisdom and political will to salvage Nigerians from the current hardship ravaging the nation.

    He urged aggrieved members of the party to sheathe their sword, come together and work for the progress of the party.

    Sen. Lado appealed to party members to support their new leaders to enable them take the party to greater heights.

    Recall that Dr Mustapha Inuwa, who leads a faction of the party, had raised a complaint that the party refused to sell forms to some members for the congresses at the ward, local government, and state levels.
