  • Masari bans Islamiyya, street begging in Katsina

    Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State, has directed the continued closure of all Islamiyya and Almajirai (allo) schools, street begging and holding of ceremonies across the State.

    According to a statement which was signed by the Secretary to the state Government, SGS, Mustapha Muhammad Inuwa, said the Governor gave the order, after a review meeting between the Government, Security Chiefs, Islamic Religious leaders, Ulamas, members of the State COVID-19 Emergency and Response Committee and other stakeholders, at Government House, Katsina

    He said” Government has noted with concern step taken by some proprietors of Islamiyya and local Qur’anic schools to reopen their schools following the relaxation of COVID-19 lockdown order in the State”

    ‘‘While the order for the closure of the schools is still in force, the Governor has directed security agents to arrest and bring to book anybody defying the order”

    ”The Governor has also banned street begging throughout the State, hence anybody found begging in the street will be arrested and his tutor or Parent will face full wrath of the law”

    The Statement further reminded members of the public to continue observing the health and security protocols such as wearing of face mask, maintaining of social distancing, regular washing of hands with soap and use of sanitizer and avoiding large gathering.

    The Governor further assured the citizens of Government’s commitment to review any COVID-19 order depending on the situation.

    Tired of killings: Angry protesters burn President Buhari’s billboard in Katsina [Video]

    Tired of killings in their community, furious residents of Yantumaki town, Danmusa local government area of Katsina State on Tuesday burned a huge billboard of President Muhammadu Buhari and the logo of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    According to reports, the aggrieved residents were protesting against the attacks and killings by bandits in the state.

    Recall that Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari had announced that his administration had pulled out of the peace deal with bandits.

    The state government had entered a peace agreement with the gunmen. But despite the accord, communities in Katsina are still being attacked and residents killed.

    On June 1, bandits shot dead 60-year-old Abu Atiku, district head of Yantumaki.

    The gunmen also attacked some communities in Batsari LGA of the state and killed the council’s APC chairman.

    The protesters reportedly barricaded the Katsina/Kankara major highway and blocked the road leading to the town.

    They were said to have been enraged by the kidnap of one Mansir Yusuf and his daughter by bandits around 1 am on Tuesday.

    Bandits invade Katsina community, kill APC chairman

    Alhaji Abdulhamid Sani, APC Chairman in Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina have been killed by bandits.

    The 55 year-old Sani was killed Sunday by bandits in a shooting rampage.

    Katsina Police Spokesman, SP Gambo Isah, confirmed Sani’s death in a statement on Sunday.

    “Today, 31/05/2020, at about 1:35 p.m., bandits in their numbers, attacked Sabon-garin Dumburawa in Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State.

    “The bandits began shooting sporadically with sophisticated weapons.

    “They killed a 55-year-old APC Chairman in Batsari local Government Area, Abdulhamid Sani, when he resisted to be kidnapped by the hoodlums,” he said.

    Isah said that Operation Puff Adder and Sharan Daji have responded.

    The operatives are now searching the forest to arrest the hoodlums.

    Katsina residents flee villages after deadly gunmen attack

    Residents in some villages under Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State have been fleeing their homes after a deadly attack by gunmen on Friday.

    The hoodlums attacked Garin Matseri and Unguwar Dankaya under Sheme District in the LGA, leaving scores of dead bodies and abducted girls in the process.

    Some residents were said to have engaged the gunmen with local arms during the attack.

    Faskari LGA is one of the worst affected places in the state as the threat of bandits continues to make most parts of Katsina State unsafe.

  • Another 14 Almajiris from Kano test positive for Coronavirus in Kaduna

    The Kaduna State government on Saturday night announced that another 14 Almajiris who were brought from Kano State have tested positive for coronavirus.

    Early this week, 21 Almajiri who were brought from Kano were found to have been infected of coronavirus and were immediately isolated.

    However, in a statement by Muyiwa Adekeye, Special Adviser to Governor Nasir el-Rufai on Media, the state standing committee was briefed that 14 more positive cases were recorded from Almajiris who were brought from Kano State.

    According to the statement: “The State Standing Committee on Covid-19 has been briefed that 14 more positive results were recorded today from almajiris who were repatriated from Kano. The committee was advised that the figure may rise when test results that are being awaited are received.

    “The Standing Committee was also informed that the repatriated almajiris are accommodated in one location, and have not mingled with the community.

    “The Standing Committee on Covid-19 was updated that these new positive results have increased active cases in the state to 41 and that one Covid-19 fatality has been recorded. Most of these 41 active cases are almajiris from Kano.

    “Further progress on expanding testing capacity was also reported. Installation of a PCR machine has commenced at the Yusuf Dantsoho General Hospital. When accredited by the NCDC, this will increase to three the number of Covid-19 testing labs activated in Kaduna State.

    “The Standing Committee commended the people of Kaduna State for their sacrifice and cooperation in enduring Quarantine Orders that are designed to protect citizens from Covid-19, prevent the spread of the virus from other states and avert the nightmare of community transmission.

    “The inconveniences being endured by Kaduna State residents require that their sacrifices be rewarded by robust enforcement of border lockdowns, to eliminate the spread of Covid-19 by persons crossing state lines in breach of State laws and FG prohibition of inter-state travel.”

    Police arrest three for ‘insulting’ Buhari in Katsina

    The Police have arrested three men in Katsina State including a septuagenarian for allegedly insulting President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State.

    Lawal Abdullahi Izala,70yrs; Bahajaje Abu,30yrs; and Hamza Abubakar,27yrs, all of Gafai Quarters, Katsina,were accused of insulting Buhari and Masari in a viral video on the social media.

    Spokesman for the State Police Command, Gambo Isah, confirmed the men’s arrest in a statement on Friday.

    He said the three men “contemptuously” insulted the president and the governor and the police took action after their attention were “drawn” to the video.

    He added:“Consequently, the commissioner of police, Katsina state command, CP Sanusi Buba, ordered for investigation, which led to the arrest of the trio of Lawal Abdullahi Izala, ‘m’, aged 70yrs, Bahajaje Abu, ‘m’, aged 30yrs and Hamza Abubakar, ‘m’, aged 27yrs all of Gafai Quarters, Katsina, Katsina state.

    “In the course of investigation suspects confessed to the committing the offences.

    “To this end, the command wishes to warn members of the general public that the police will not fold its arms and watch while disgruntled elements violate the sacred laws of the land.

    “Any person found taking undue advantage of the social media to insult others, contrary to the provisions of the Cyber Crime Act, will face the wrath of the law.”

    Another 91 new Coronavirus cases have hit Nigeria, taking the total figures to 873.

    Of the 91 new cases, Lagos has a whopping 74 fresh infections, with Kaduna having five, Ogun, four; Delta, two; Edo, two; while Kwara, Oyo, Abuja and Adamawa have one each.

    So far, 197 Coronavirus survivors have been discharged while the nation has recorded 28 deaths.

    “91 new cases of #COVID19 have been reported; 74 in Lagos, 5 in Katsina. 4 in Ogun, 2 in Delta, 2 in Edo, 1 in Kwara, 1 in Oyo, 1 in FCT and 1 in Adamawa.

    “As at 11:25 pm 22nd April there are 873 confirmed cases of #COVID19 reported in Nigeria. Discharged: 197; Deaths: 28,” NCDC said on its twitter handle.

    Buhari reacts as bandits kill 47 in Katsina, cart away relief materials

    President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the latest attacks by bandits in three local government areas of Katsina State, that left 47 persons dead.

    Reacting to the incident, the President said he was deeply saddened by the latest development, and called on Nigerians not to despair because “this administration is ever determined to defeat and crush these criminal elements taking advantage of the lockdown to attack their victims.”

    In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, President Buhari said he will not tolerate this large-scale killing of innocent people by the bandits, adding that “in line with my commitment to the security of the people, these attacks will be met with decisive force.”

    He directed the security agencies not to rest on their oars or lower their guard, which will create a vacuum for the bandits to strike. While extending his sympathies to the families of the victims, he called on the people to show more vigilance by reporting the activities of criminal elements in their midst.

    The attacks took place in the early hours of Saturday, between 12:30am and around 3am, Katsina police said in its statement on Sunday.

    “Detachments of Police, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Airforce, Civil Defence and DSS (Department of State Services) have been drafted to the area,” the statement added.

    Police spokesman Gambo Isah told the newsmen that the attacks were carried out by more than 300 armed men.

    “We are combing the forest to arrest those behind the attack,” added Isah.

    The bandits reportedly demanded food items and other relief materials delivered to the villagers as part of government’s efforts to help locals during the coronavirus lockdown

    The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced five new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) on Sunday taking the total to 323.

    “Five new cases of COVID-19 have been reported as follows: two in Lagos, two in Kwara and one in Katsina.

    “As at 09:10 pm 12th April there are 323 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in Nigeria.

    “Eighty five have been discharged with 10 deaths There are 19 states with confirmed cases in Nigeria.

    Just In: Katsina suspected coronavirus case tests negative

    The Katsina state indigene who returned from Malaysia and was suspected to have been infected by the dreaded Coronavirus has tested negative.

    The Katsina State Commissioner for Health, Engineer Nuhu Yakubu Danja, told newsmen on Thursday morning in his office, that tests carried out on the suspected case proved negative.
