    Katsina records first suspected case of coronavirus

    Katsina State Ministry of Health, says it has recorded a first suspected case of coronavirus ( COVID 19 ) in the state.

    Speaking with journalists, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Kabir Mustapha, said the patient who is presently on self-isolation returned from Malaysia and developed symptoms that warrant further investigations.

    Already, the blood samples have been taken and result is being expected by tomorrow. “He said that the people that the patient had contact will be traced as soon as results are out” He said the ministry is taking all precautionary measures and closely working with National centre for Disease control (NCDC) on the matter.

    According to him, the patient’s history of travel was a high index and the symptoms reported at the clinic prompted actions noting that since his arrival into the state.

    The patient was taking personal protection of using face mark and self-isolation”

    He advised people of the host community of Dutsinma town where the suspected patient come from to be cautious of movements and gatherings. He said that people should feel free to seek medical attention as all precautionary measures are on place to provide support.

    Man kills lover over dispute on pregnancy ownership in Katsina

    Katsina State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Shafi’u Haruna, for allegedly killing his girlfriend over dispute on the ownership of her pregnancy.

    Haruna was arrested last Tuesday following a tip off.

    The spokesman for the command, SP Gambo Isah, said Haruna who lived in the Dorawar Natiba area of Birdigau village, in the Kankara Local Government Area of the state allegedly committed the crime in December, 2019.

    According to the police spokesman, Haruna tricked 14-year-old Hamsiya Lawal of the same address to a nearby bush where he allegedly smashed her head with a stone.

    She reportedly died on the spot.

    SP Isah said “The suspect smashed her head with heavy stone, killing her instantly. Investigation is ongoing.”

    Just in: Buhari condemns revenge killings in Katsina

    President President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the latest round of attacks on farmers by bandits in Damkal and Tsanwa villages in Batsari local government area of Katsina state, saying that killing people in the name of revenge is not acceptable.

    He was reacting to the tragedy in which many homesteads were razed by fire with many people killed at weekend.

    Buhari warned that “no one in the country has a right to take laws into his hands by the way of self-help or revenge. Local communities that catch bandits should hand over the suspects to law enforcement authorities instead of meting out capital punishment, leading to a cycle of revenge and counter revenge.”

    He urged community leaders and the local authorities to continue their efforts in partnership with law enforcement agencies that bring the surrender of bandits, leading to peace between farmers and herders.

    “The authorities must be allowed to investigate and deal with any breach that occurs. There is no place for violence in a decent society,” said the President.

    Judge handling corruption case against ex-Katsina gov, Shema dies in car accident

    The people of Katsina state and their Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, were thrown into mourning over the weekend following the death of judge with the State High Court, Justice Ibrahim Maikaita Bako, who died along Katsina –Funtua road.

    Until his death, Justice Maikata Bako was handling the corruption case involving the EFFCC and Former Katsina State Governor Ibrahim Shehu Shema

    Governor Masari, in a statement signed by his Director-General, Media, Abdu Labaran Malumfashi, described Justice Bako as an illustrious son of Katsina State who distinguished himself in the legal career.

    He said ‘’Justice Bako, who was a High Court judge up to his death made Katsina State proud by distinguishing himself in his chosen career’’.

    He said ’’His death would reverberate beyond the shores of Katsina and Nigeria given the profound role he played in one of the most important institutions in Nigeria, nay globally, ie the judiciary’’.

    The Governor further condoled the immediate families of the deceased on behalf of himself, the government and people of Katsina State and prayed Allah to forgive him all his sins and other shortcomings, even as he urged the bereaved to take consolation in the fact that the revered judge had lived a fulfilled life.

    Also in his condolence message, the Chief Judge of Katsina state, Justice Musa Abubakar Danladi, regretted that the state will be missing one of the leading light in the state’s judiciary

    Justice Danladi appealed to the family of the deceased to take solace in the good work the departed judge has left behind before his death.

    The late judge was involved in a road accident while travelling from Katsina to Funtua last Friday and was taken to a hospital in Abuja for treatment where he later died.

    Katsina records 996,000 out-of-school children

    Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina State says available statistics from the United Nations shows that there are 996,000 out-of-school children in the state.

    Masari disclosed this on Friday in Katsina while fielding questions from newsmen in Katsina.

    He, however, noted that most of the children were not Nigerians.

    “Since they are now in Nigeria, they become part of our responsibility, and the government is doing what it can to make sure that it address the issue of Almajiri roaming the streets,’’ he said.

    He also said the state would incorporate the Qur’anic education system into the school feeding programme as part of measures to integrate the system into western education.

    Masari said,“We will work with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and Federal Ministry of Education to see how we can come in the system and improve it.’’

    He said that census of all the Qur’anic schools in the state would soon be taken with students’ population and locations.

    The governor said that the state government had made adequate arrangement with religious leaders on how to ensure success of the programme.

    According to him, under the arrangement, any scholar that is from Katsina state will have to go back to his community and teach the ‘Almajiri’ there.

    “We have to do away with cultural believes, a child can learn both Qur’anic and Islamic education at home; he do not need to go far away.

    “We will also introduce western education into the system,’’ he said.

    Police clears air on alleged kidnap of 40 people in Katsina

    The Katsina State Police Command on Monday denied reports in the Social media and some newspaper publications alleging that 40 persons were kidnapped by bandits along Jibia – Batsari road on Sunday.

    The Command Spokesman, Superintendent Gambo Isa, in a statement, described the news as ’’mere rumor’’ and urged the public to disregard such information

    He said: ’’The command wishes to clarify rumors being circulated in the social media that yesterday in the evening bandits have kidnapped forty persons along Jibia – Batsari road’’.

    ‘’ What truly happened was that at about 18:00hrs, bandits numbering over sixty armed with AK 47 rifles blocked Jibia – Batsari road, exactly at Ruma village, forcefully stopped two J5 motor vehicles and took the occupants of the vehicles into the bush.

    ‘’Search party led by Operation Puff Adder went after the hoodlums but succeeded in rescuing all the victims with the exception of seven others’’.

    He further assured that the Police, in collaboration with community members, are frantically combing the bush to rescue the remaining seven persons.

    The seven listed as missing include: Muazu, Yasore 80, Nuhu 45, Kabiru Hashimu, 37, Dan Asibi Tela, 50, Sani Kokari 70, Nura Shambal 45 and ALi Dan Maituwor 65.

    Police rescue kidnapped teenage girls in Katsina

    Katsina State Police Command says it has rescued six kidnapped teenage girls in Batsari Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

    A statement issued in Katsina on Thursday by the command’s spokesman, SP Gambo Isah, stated that the victims were kidnapped while working in a farm at Mata-Mulki Village in Batsari.

    Isah said that the police received a distress call at about 12:30 p.m. that “unrepentant bandits with AK47 rifles kidnapped some girls working in a farm at Mata-Mulki Village.”

    He said that the Operation Puff Adder team, led by Divisional Police Officer in charge of Batsari, swiftly moved to the area.

    “The team gave the hoodlums a hot chase into the forest and engaged them in a gun duel.

    “The bandits abandoned the victims and ran into the forest, the police successfully rescued the six girls,” Isah said.

    New Minimum Wage: Katsina NLC sets December 31 deadline

    Katsina State Chairman of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC), Hussaini Hamisu, has said that the union expects the state government to fast track its negotiations with workers on the consequential adjustments arising from the signing into law of the new minimum wage.

    He expressed hope that the joint committee negotiation between labour and the state government would work to beat the December deadline given by the national headquarters of the NLC.

    Hamisu, who made the call on Christmas eve at the Katsina State Joint Committee meeting for the implementation the new minimum wage called by the Secretary to the State Government, Mustapha Mohammadu Inuwa, further commended the state government for giving them the opportunity to serve the state in that capacity.

    Meanwhile, the Committe Chairman and Secretary to the State Government has disclosed that the committee would take into consideration the revenue coming from the Federal Government to the state and the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) as well as payment of salaries, gratuities and pensions to retirees into considerations during the ongoing negotiations.

    Inuwa, who commended the NLC for its understanding and patience, appreciated them for their understanding.

    He said: “The labour and workers should understand that the government will do what it can afford and become sustainable based on the available resources.”

    Police arrest woman for poisoning her step daughter in Katsina

    The police in Katsina State have arrested one Aisha Abubakar, 38, for allegedly killing her stepdaughter by poisoning.

    This is contained in a statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Gambo Isah and made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Katsina.

    He said that the incident happened on Nov. 28 at Sabuwar-Unguwa quarters, Rimi Local Government Area of the state.

    Isah said that the suspect allegedly administered a poisonous food on a four-year-old girl, Aisha, who became unconscious after eating the food.

    According to him, the victim was rushed to the hospital where she later died.

    He revealed that the suspect confessed to have committed the offence because of the hatred she had with the mother of the girl.

    The police spokesman said that the suspect would be charged to court after investigation to serve as deterrent to others.

    Isah also said that the police have succeeded in apprehending one Ibrahim Kasim, 22, of Makera, Funtua local government area for allegedly kidnapping his step sister.

    He said that the incident occurred on Nov.16 where the suspect conspired with his girlfriend, Murja and committed the offence.

    He said that the police immediately swung into action and arrested the principal suspect and rescued the six-year-ols victim, Asiya.

    He said that the suspect confessed to have made several phone calls with the father of the victim to demand for the payment of a ransom.

    Isah revealed that the suspect had also confessed to have organised the kidnapping and demanded N10 million as ransom.

    He said that the command was making efforts to arrest other members of the syndicate now at large.

  • Buhari returns to Abuja after official visits to Malabo, Katsina

    President Muhammadu Buhari has returned to Abuja after five-day official visits to Malabo (Equatorial Guinea), Katsina and Kaduna State.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the president had on Nov. 28 departed Abuja to participate at the 5th Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) Summit in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

    In his address at the opening of the 5th Gas summit, the president revealed that the Federal Government would soon commence the construction of the 600-kilometre Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline which would move gas from the Southern part of the country to the North.

    The president added that the viability of extending the gas pipeline to North Africa was also under consideration

    The idea of the GECF was first mooted in 2001 when the First Ministerial Meeting was held in Tehran, Iran, while the First GECF otherwise called Gas Summit, took place in Doha, Qatar in 2011 with Nigeria represented at the highest level.

    NAN reports that other members of GECF, who accounted for between 70 per cent and 80 per cent of global gas reserves and production include Algeria, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Libya, Bolivia, Iran, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, Kazakhstan and Norway.

    Buhari also held bilateral meetings with President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea and Iranian Vice President for Economic Affairs, Mohammad Nahavandian, on the sidelines of the summit.

    The president was accompanied on the Malabo trip by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva; Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Olamilekan Adegbite; and the Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kolo Kyari.

    NAN reports that the president left Malabo after the summit on Friday and headed to Daura, Katsina State, on another official assignment where he performed the ground breaking ceremony for the University of Transportation, Daura, and inaugurated the Kwanar Gwante (Shargalle Road.

    Before returning to Abuja, the president visited Kaduna where he unveiled Made-in-Nigeria Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles for Nigerian Army’s counter-terrorism operations and other exercises.

    The vehicles, named Ezugwu MRAP, were produced by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria, an indigenous firm.
