The Federal Government has approved a loan of $110 million for Katsina state from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) to enhance health-care delivery in the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Mariatu Bala-Usman at the Annual General Meeting of the Katsina State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association said the loan would be used essentially to develop new health care centres and also upgrade existing ones. She made the statement while delivering a paper titled, “Challenges Facing Health Care Delivery in Katsina State and the Way Forward.”

She admitted that the state has a lot of challenges in health care delivery, and stated illiteracy and ignorance about health related issues as some of the issues that need to be tackled.

“Among the challenges being faced in the state are late reporting of sickness at hospitals by many people due to ignorance and illiteracy as well as poor post-natal attendance at hospitals by nursing mothers especially after giving birth, for necessary follow ups for new born babies.“

She also stressed the dilapidated nature of so many of the structures used as health care centres in the state, and the need for more staff to maintain the available facilities.

Katsina was recently ravaged by a scary flood which destroyed over a hundred houses and left over 2,000 people homeless and is thus currently faced with a lot pressure to improve on the availability of basic amenities in the state.

    Meningitis kills 8 in Katsina

Cerebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM) has killed not less than eight people at Tsabu village in Mai’adua Local Government Area of Katsina State, an official has said.

Alhaji Nasiru Mani, the Director of Primary Health Care of the council, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Mai’adua on Thursday.

Mani said the outbreak of the deadly disease was discovered in the last two days following a report from the community.

He said that 16 cases were recorded out of which eight people lost their lives.

According to him, the remaining patients have been admitted at the Mai’adua and Daura general hospitals for proper medical attention.

“We (LGC) had since deployed a surveillance team to the area to address the situation,’’ said the director.

He said the combined efforts of state and local government medical teams have succeeded in addressing the problem.

“I called on our people to avail themselves for the ongoing vaccination against such diseases to curb further spread of the disease.

“We have designated centres at our rural clinics where people are being immunised or vaccinated against such diseases,” he said.

Mani commended the role of Medicines San Frontiers (MSF) or doctors without borders for their efforts in addressing the outbreak.

He called on the people of the area to adhere to the safety measures of sleeping inside ventilated rooms, houses and environs.

Besides, the director advised residents to report suspicious cases and visit nearby health centres over any symptom.

  • Katsina APC Treasurer, 4,000 supporters defect to PDP

Alhaji Nasiru Usman, Treasurer, Katsina State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), along with 4,000 others.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the defectors presented themselves to the Kankia Local Government chapter of their new political abode, on Saturday.

Speaking on behalf of other defectors, Usman said that they decided to jump ship because the APC neglected them.

It is a fact that I led many others in the struggle that ensured victory for the APC in the 2015 general election.

I campaigned vigorously against the then PDP candidate, Musa Nashuni, who is from my own local government – Kankia – and ensured he lost even his village, to Aminu Masari of APC.

However, after the polls and the subsequent assumption of Masari as governor of Katsina State, majority of us were neglected by the APC.

In my own case, some party stalwarts in Kankia went to the party’s state headquarters and ensured that I was suspended from its fold, for reasons best known to them.

I have been on suspension for 14 months, with the state office refusing to recall me as directed by the Northwest Zonal Chapter of the party, following my successful petition against the illegal action,” he said.

He said that his defection to the PDP was not to contest for any position.

We left the party because of neglect. The 4,000 people defecting with me are from the 10 political wards of Kankia,” he said.

Nashuni, Masari’s PDP rival in 2015, who also spoke, said that the PDP would not repeat the mistakes that led to the loss of the 2015 elections.

Nashuni urged PDP members to remain focused, steadfast and united so as to be able to wrestle power from its rivals in 2019.

Alhaji Salisu Majigiri, who received the defectors, promised a level playing ground for all PDP members.

In PDP, we are one and the same and have equal opportunities at all time,” he said.

  • Former Katsina Gov. Shema appears in court for alleged misappropriation funds

The immediate past governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shema, has appeared in court for alleged financial misappropriation during his tenure as governor.

Shema was arraigned before Justice Ibrahim Bako by the Katsina state government and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday.

He, however, did not take plea.

Earlier, EFCC counsel, Jibrin Samuel (SAN), had urged the court to remand Shema in prison so that they could have access to him at will.

Samuel asked that the administrative bail earlier given to Shema be revoked, saying he had shown some signs of not reporting to the commission.

The defence counsel, Joseph Daudu, however, objected to the prayer of the EFFC counsel to have his client remanded in prison custody.

Daudu argued that the state High Court had no jurisdiction to try his client, adding that Shema should be allowed to go home until the case had been appropriately filed.

The trial judge, Bako, ruled that it was premature for the EFCC counsel to pray for the detention of the ex-governor in prison.

He advised both sides to take the case slowly in order to have a decent trial, and adjourned the case till Feb. 7 for mention.

Recall that the state government had alleged illegal diversion of state funds during Shema’s tenure.
