2023: OPC takes position on Tinubu, Osinbajo, Fayemi’s presidential ambition

The O’odua Peoples Congress (OPC) has stated it’s position on the presidential ambition of Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports OPC as saying it’s interest is beyond the 2023 general elections, dissociating itself from a coalition of 57 Yoruba groups allegedly rooting for South-West pro-restructuring presidential candidate in 2023.

OPC Publicity Secretary, Mr Yinka Oguntimehin, in a statement, denied the involvement of Aare Gani Adams in the mega accord, saying such moves were purely fraudulent and very far from the truth.

Oguntimehin urged the groups to stop using the name of OPC for petty political mileage, saying OPC was not among the 57 Yoruba groups that met in Lagos at the weekend to mobilise the South-West for Tinubu, Osibajo or Fayemi’s presidency.

Recall that OPC had been listed among those behind the mega accord of 57 Yoruba civil society groups that met in Lagos recently with a resolve to mobilise the South-West for a pro-restructuring presidential candidate in 2023.

The meeting was reportedly presided over by a journalist, Mr Adewale Adeoye, while the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting was signed by Messrs Sunday Akinnuoye, Femi Agbana and Mrs Ganiat Toriola.

The groups noted that they were aware of presidential aspirants like Dr Kayode Fayemi, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

They vowed to ensure that the 2023 presidential election produces a candidate that would restructure the country and resolve the lingering National Question irrespective of political platform.

But Oguntimehin said that OPC under the leadership of Iba Gani Abiodun Ige Adams had, at no time, mobilise the group for any politician, insisting that the group’s interest is beyond the 2023 general elections.

“Including OPC’s name without specific name attached to the purported arrangement of 57 South-West groups rooting for a South-West presidential candidate was a fraud and illegal because we are not a party to a meeting.

“There was no visual or audio content of how, when or where the meeting was held, only for us to see the story in the papers.

“We are aware that when elections are approaching, some politicians usually use the OPC’s name to curry favours.

“There are some groups that are affiliates of political parties that usually make themselves available for politicians as at when due,” he said.

According to him, those groups masquerading as OPC members have no programme or activities that they are known for.

“Even if anything happens in Yoruba land, you don’t hear their voices, except, occasionally, during elections or when they are paid to issue statements against us.

“So, I enjoin whoever that is behind the arrangement to toe the right path and be specific in attaching OPC’s name to any political accord.

“Anybody or group using our name without proper attachment or specification amounts to fraud and we will handle such in the most conventional manner,” Oguntimehin added.

  • Second appointee of Gov Fayemi resigns, joins Ekiti State governorship race

Second appointee of Gov Fayemi resigns, joins Ekiti State governorship race

Mr Bamidele Faparusi, Ekiti Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, has resigned his appointment to contest the state’s 2022 governorship election.

Faparusi conveyed his resignation to Gov. Kayode Fayemi in a letter dated Dec. 14 and was reportedly acknowledged on Dec. 17.

Copies of the letter were disseminated to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday.

Faparusi had been a strong proponent of power shift to the Ekiti South Senatorial District.

The letter reads in part: “It is with great pleasure that I thank you for the vote of confidence reposed in me to represent Ayekire Local Council Development Area in the state’s Executive Council.

“It enabled me to serve as the political head of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Utilities, which is pivotal to the development agenda of this administration.

“Under your proactive leadership, I had the rare opportunity to consolidate on my cognate experience, broaden my perspective and build capacities in the service to the people.

“These are the bases of my decision to vie for the governorship seat following extensive consultations with the people and critical stakeholders.

“I wish to convey my decision to resign from the government to enable me to focus on the intense work required to make our party walk to victory at the poll.

“Your Excellency, I am most grateful to you and particularly take this opportunity to thank you for the assurances of your unalloyed support.

“I once again reaffirm my loyalty to you and my commitment to the progress of our great party and Ekiti State.

“Please, accept the assurances of my highest regards.’’

Faparusi was elected member of the House of Representatives in 2011, where he represented Ekiti East/Gbonyin/Emure Federal Constituency for four years.

He has been at the vanguard in the agitation for the zoning of All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket to the South Senatorial district.

Others in the same vanguard argue that this was required in the spirit of equity, justice and fair play since that part of the state had never produced a governor since its creation in 1996.

Faparusi is an engineer and former member of the House of Representatives.

He becomes the second top appointee of Gov. Fayemi to resign so as to contest the APC’s governorship primary election scheduled for Jan. 22, 2022.

Secretary to the State Government, Biodun Oyebanji, left the cabinet two weeks ago following a directive by Gov. Fayemi that cabinet members eyeing the governorship seat should resign on or before Dec. 18.

The number of politicians that have so far shown interest in the governorship position across board has risen to about 30.

He said that the budget was made up of N60.7 billion recurrent expenditure, representing about 60 per cent and N40.7 billion capital expenditure, representing 40 per cent.

“The primary objective of the 2022 budget is to complete and consolidate on all our legacy projects and lay a solid foundation for the incoming government.

“We will focus on projects that will fast track the economic growth of the state.

“We intend to improve on our Internally Generated Revenue(IGR) by blocking loopholes and identifying new sources of revenue generation, thereby reducing our dependent on the monthly federal allocation,” the governor said.

Fayemi said that the budget was based on the economic realities in the country and the world in general.

He said that agriculture and rural development was allocated N2.2 billion, infrastructure and industrial development N28.6 billion, knowledge economy N19.4 billion, social investment N14.6 billion and governance N36.7 billion in the budget.

Fayemi, who reiterated the commitment of his administration to the welfare of workers, said that the budget has provision for the clearing of backlogs of unpaid salaries.

He said that the budget would also ensure prompt payment of pensions and gratuities to retired workers.

He disclosed that more than 2,000,000 people were expected to be vaccinated against COVID-19 before the middle of 2022 as captured in the budget.

He lauded the lawmakers for their usual cooperation, urging them to speedily consider the budget.

  • VAT war: Nigeria’s tax system problematic, confusing, contradictory – Governors Forum

VAT war: Nigeria’s tax system problematic, confusing, contradictory – Governors Forum

The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) said on Monday that it was waiting for the verdict of the Supreme Court before taking any decision on the vexed issue of Valued Added Tax (VAT).

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti who doubles as the Chairman of the forum, stated this while featuring on a monitored programme on Arise Television.

Fayemi said the forum believed that the controversy over VAT required both political and legal measures to be settled.

“But, our take on this is that the Supreme Court should accelerate its decision so that we have clarity over who should be in charge of Value Added Tax (VAT), whether it is the Federal Inland Revenue Service, or States.

“States that have gone to court believe clearly that this responsibility evolves, according to their own understanding, on what the Constitution says.

“The important thing is that our tax system is problematic, confusing, and contradictory. We need to do a lot more to clarify things so that it can give room for more efficient and effective collection of taxes,” Fayemi said.

The governor also emphasised the need to channel borrowed funds to regenerative ventures that would strengthen the nation’s economy and generate more jobs for the citizens.

He said that there was nothing wrong in the recent call by President Muhammadu Buhari for a downward review of the nation’s debt portfolio, owing to the prevailing revenue challenges facing the country.

“The President Buhari administration ought to be commended on the utilization of money being borrowed. It has utilized these monies more on infrastructure development than consumption which has aided economic growth.

“Clearly, it would be great not to borrow, but it would also be great to redirect the funds that we have to regenerative areas of our economy.

“Realistically, we have a revenue challenge which has not enabled us to build an economy that responds to the yearnings of Nigerians.

“I don’t think there is anything wrong in the President, as a major voice in international affair, particularly in Africa and the black world, calling for a review of debt management and arrangements,” he said.

The Chairman of the NGF also called for a comprehensive approach that would complement the National Security Response Strategy in tackling the lingering security challenges facing the nation.

According to him, the challenge ultimately was that we must tackle insecurity not on a state-by-state basis alone.

“Security is a permanent issue on the agenda of our State and as the governor. Ekiti is a state that is on the outer boundary of Northern and Southern Nigeria, right from Kogi and Kwara states.

“Some of the things that happen in the Northern states do have an impact on our security in Ekiti State, just as it does in every other states around us and clearly.

“I have argued in the past that there is an inexplicable linkage between the fallout of insurgency and banditry in the Northeast and the Northwest and the kidnapping we are witnessing in some parts of the South.

“Our duty is to ensure that we protect the citizens on our watch and we have been trying to do that consistently.

“We have pulled together joint security initiatives between mainstream security institutions like the Police and the Military and also our own local security base.

“Tackling insecurity should be through a comprehensive approach that will complement the National Security Response Strategy and reduce this scourge that we are experiencing in the country,” he said.

Lending his voice to the new Petroleum Industry Act, the NGF chairman said: “We do not believe that the Ministry of Finance (incorporated) and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources should be the sole owners of the company that have emerged out of the Petroleum Act.

“We believe that the entire body of petroleum institution is the product of the federation and not only the Federal Government.

“And, we have suggested that the one body that belongs to both the Federal, State, and Local Governments is the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority in which we (the states) are all shareholders.

“And, if it is held in trust by the Authority, then we are a lot more comfortable in seeing that as a federation company rather than a Federal Government company.

“The second concern that we have expressed relates to the depletion of the federation account by the various percentages that have been earmarked for frontier states and host communities of the petroleum product. Without prejudice to what the host communities deserve,” he said.

On the 2023 general elections, Fayemi predicted victory for the APC.

He said: “contentions are always going to happen. APC is a big Party with different tendencies and there will be contentions for and against.

“We are very confident that this Party will produce the next government in this country in 2023, but before we get there, we are more focused on the country now.

“The Party is more interested in the stability and security of Nigeria. What is happening internally is something we will resolve internally,” he said.

The seat became vacant following the death in February of an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker representing the constituency in the state House of Assembly, Juwa Adegbuyi.
