    BREAKING: Ballot snatcher silenced in Kebbi state

    A yet to be identified ballot box snatcher has been shot dead by soldiers on patrol at Bajida polling unit 001, Fakai Local Government Area of Kebbi South.

    The suspect was reportedly shot dead while he was attempting to snatch a ballot box from officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the ongoing supplementary elections in the state.

    According to eyewitnesses in the area, the deceased was a member of the proscribed Yansakai, a local volunteer vigilante group.

    He was said to have intruded into the polling unit claiming to be a security agent.

    He was alleged to have attempted to snatch a gun from a soldier at the polling unit when he was shot.

    “He and his group rushed to the polling unit trying to snatch the ballot box as INEC officials were moving the ballot box to the collation centre.

    “Efforts to stop him by people at the polling unit failed and as he struggled to collect the gun from a soldier he was shot by another soldier,” an eyewitness said.

    INEC declares Kebbi guber election inconclusive

    The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC on Monday declared the gubernatorial election in Kebbi State as “inconclusive”.

    The election was keenly contested by the two giant political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

    The Collation and Returning Officer of the election, Prof. Yusuf Sa’idu of the Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, announced the position at the the collation centre situated at INEC headquarters in Birnin Kebbi.

    He said there were cancelations in 20 of the 21 Local Government Areas of Kebbi State cutting across a number of Registration Areas (RAs) in different polling units.

    Sa’idu said: “We aggregated the total number of collected PVCs in those polling units and it came to a total of 91,829.

    “And when we checked the results, the two leading political parties in this contest, APC and PDP polled 388,258 and 342,980 votes respectively. When we looked at the difference, it stands at 45,278.”

    He noted that they had no option than to refer to the electoral laws on page 31 of the Electoral Act 2022, section 51 sub-sections two and three for guidance.

    According to him, law reads: “Where the number of votes cast in an election in any polling unit exceed the number of accredited voters in that polling unit, the presiding officer shall cancel the result of the election in that polling unit.

    “Sub section three of section 51 also states that where the result of an election is cancelled in accordance with sub-section two, there shall be no return for the election until another poll has taken place in the affected polling unit.

    “By virtue of this provisions and the powers vested in me as the collation and returning officer of 2023 gubernatorial election in Kebbi State, I, Prof. Yusuf Sa’idu of the Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, hereby declare the gubernatorial election in Kebbi State inconclusive.”

    Insecurity: Bandits kill two, kidnap ten persons in Kebbi state

    Gaye and Shangel communities in the Danko Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, were thrown into  pandemonium when bandits struck and killed two persons and kidnapped 10 on Christmas eve.

    According to a source, “The bandits came in large numbers to attack Gaye and Shangel communities on Saturday. and carried out their deadly mission of killing two persons,”

    The source also said that five of the ten persons kidnapped are related to a politician Wasagu who’s presently serving at the Kebbi state House of Assembly.

    The source  explained further  that the people of the two communities were caught unawares otherwise they would have repelled the attack.

    He added that it is not the first time they are attacking communities in the area, pointing out that the people in the affected communities always stay guard against their attacks.

    The source confirmed that many have fled the communities for fear of being attacked by bandits.

    Meanwhile, the police Public Relations Officer, Kebbi Command, DSP Nafiu Abubakar, said the police will investigate the matter.

    Justice Umar Abubakar sworn-in as Acting Chief Judge in Kebbi State

    Justice Umar Abubakar was yesterday sworn-in as the Acting Chief judge of Kebbi State.

    Recall that  Chief Judge, Justice Suleiman Mohammad Ambursa the former Chief judge retired few days ago.

    Justice Abubakar took the oath of allegiance and the judicial oath under the supervision of Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, assisted by the outgoing Chief Judge, Justice Suleiman Muhammad Ambursa, at the Council Chamber, Government House, Birnin Kebbi the state capital  on Saturday.

    Meanwhile, governor Bagudu congratulated Justice Abubakar on his new appointment to the exalted office as the Head of the Judiciary in the State.

    Governor Baguda eulogised the former Chief Judge, Justice Ambursa, whose retirement officially takes place with immediate effect.

    Bagudu charged the new Chief Judge to continue with the tradition Kebbi State has been known for as the bastion of judicial excellence.

    He informed the gathering that lawyers have intimated him that their tour of duty to Kebbi State had immensely helped them to achieve successes elsewhere in judicial cases.

    Bagudu described the judiciary in Kebbi State as of high diligence, pointing out that access to Justice remained the key and absolute necessity in attaining justice among litigants.

    The Governor was delighted that Kebbi State had achieved peace, with the judiciary playing a vital role.

    The acting Chief Judge is expected to kick the ball rolling from Wednesday 27th of December 2022, when the last  public holiday would have been over.

    Bagudu earmarks N3.5bn for outstanding 2021-2022 gratuity

    Gov. Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State says his administration has earmarked N3.5 billion for the payment of outstanding gratuity to retired civil servants in the state.

    Malam Yahaya Sarki, the Special Adviser to the governor on Media, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.

    Sarki quoted Bagudu as saying this at a Townhall meeting on the 2023 Budget of the state held at the Banquet Hall, Presidential Lodge, Birnin Kebbi.

    According to the governor, the state government will defray the outstanding gratuity owed retirees from December 2021 to September 2022.

    He explained that the state government had made adequate arrangements to ensure that the payments were made on or before the end of this year.

    Bagudu, who is also the Chairman, APC Governors’ Forum, assured that his administration would not bequeath unnecessary liabilities to the incoming administration in the state.

    The governor said hat the last seven years had been horrendous for the world economy, resulting in global financial turbulence.

    “It’s even a miracle that Nigeria had been kept together. I must thank the public servants and the generality of the people of the state for their uncommon show of support and cooperation.

    “I must also thank the people of the state for their patience and resilience for accommodating some of our inadequacies.

    “However, every government should be judged by the challenges it faces and we are glad that we have done our best.

    “We will sustain our modest efforts to govern the state transparently, honestly and piously and In-shaa Allah, the incoming administration will consolidate our achievements,” he said.

    He reeled out some completed and ongoing programmes, projects and policies of the state government, saying “our main objective is to make life easier for the people of the state.

    “This affects all the sectors of the economy and we are happy that we have done modestly fabulous.”

    He commended the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning under the leadership of the Commissioner, Dr Abba Kalgo, the Permanent Secretary, Hajiya Aisha Usman, and their team for ensuring the annual budget of the state receive input from traditional rulers, associations and other of relevant stakeholders.

    Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Babale Yauri, appreciated the presence of the governor, top government officials, traditional rulers, civil society groups and international partners at the forum.

    He said the budget townhall meeting, which was the 4th in the series organised by the present administration, was aimed at carrying along every indigene of the state in preparation and execution of fiscal policies towards promoting good governance.

    On his part, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Budget and Economic Planing, Hajiya Aisha Usman, presented an overview of the 2022 budget performance, while the Co-Chair Open Government Partnership (OGP), Mr Ibrahim Ngaski, presented outcomes of zonal townhall meetings and citizen input into the 2023 budget.

    The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Alhaji Abba Kalgo, had earlier given highlights of the 2023 budget, tagged: “Budget of Enduring Legacies”.

    According to him, the proposed 2023 budget was prepared in line with the Kebbi State 2023-2025 Medium Term Expenditure Framework.

    He explained that the 2023 Budget was based on a benchmarked oil price of $57 per barrel, while oil production was benchmarked at 1.8 million barrels per day, inflation rate estimated at 20.77 per cent and an exchange rate of N440 to $1.

    The commissioner said that the proposed 2023 Budget totalled N166,985,075,110 only.

    He said capital expenditure was estimated at N107,323,421,342, representing 64 per cent, while recurrent expenditure stood at N59,661,653,768 or 36 per cent.

    Bagudu approves N2.57bn for payment of leave grant to state, LG workers

    The Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu, has approved the release of N2.57 billion for payment of two years leave grant of 2021 and 2022 for the workers of state, local governments and Local Education Authorities (LGEAs).

    The approval is contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner of Finance, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad-Augie and made available to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Monday.

    “Kebbi Government, under the leadership of Gov. Atiku Bagudu, has regularly met its obligations on human resource entitlements for its serving and retired workers.

    “This fact was attested to by both the state and national chapters of the Nigerian Labour Congresses (NLC) during their nationwide rally held in Birnin Kebbi recently.

    “Kebbi state under the leadership of Gov. Atiku Bagudu is among the few elite states with the best track records on staff welfare and development.

    ” All salaries, pensions, gratuity, leave grants, promotions, advancements and trainings have been regularly maintained by the administration from inception in 2015 to date,” it said.

    The statement reported the commissioner as calling on workers in the state to compliment the efforts of the government.

    “This is by always putting their best to be dutiful, loyal and hard working, to help government deliver on all the excellent Programmes pursued in uplifting the overall development of the state to greater heights,” the statement said.

    Ex-Kebbi commissioner, Ishaku Daudu, supporters dump PDP

    Former Kebbi Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ishaku Daudu and his supporters defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday in Birnin Kebbi.

    Daudu was a prominent stakeholder in the PDP for more than 20 years and also one-time Chairman of Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area in Zuru Emirate.

    The defectors were received at the APC secretariat by the state’s chairman of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Kana-Zuru, and Alhaji Faruk Musa-Yaro, Personal Assistant to Gov. Atiku Bagudu, among other APC stakeholders.

    Kana-Zuru congratulated them for joining the APC and assured them of equal treatment and respect in their new party.

    “Henceforth, they will be fully accommodated in APC’s activities at all levels,’’ he said.

    In his remarks, Daudu said he joined the APC in good faith following overtures by friends and well-meaning people in Kebbi.

    “Plans are underway to sway local government and ward executives of PDP in Kebbi to the APC, not only in my local government area, Danko/Wasagu, but in the entire Zuru emirate.

    “I will sit with the party chairman to work out how PDP executives at local government and ward levels that I am bringing into the APC will be accommodated.

    “I can assure you that PDP is dead in Zuru. PDP knows my worth and what I can do,’’ he said.

    Earlier, Musa-Yaro praised the former commissioner for joining the APC and described him as an honest and gentle personality who tirelessly carried his supporters along, irrespective of their religious or ethnic backgrounds.

    He promised to work assiduously for the success of all APC candidates at the 2023 general elections.

    Musa-Yaro also appealed to all stakeholders in the APC to tighten their belts for the tasks ahead.

    Bagudu lauds Zuggu community for routing bandits

    Gov. Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi has hailed the bravery of Zuggu residents in Maiyama Local Government Area, for routing some bandits who attacked the community.

    This is contained in a statement issued on Saturday in Birnin Kebbi by Bagudu’s Special Adviser on Media, Malam Yahaya Sarki.

    The governor who visited the community on on Friday, commended residents for standing up to the bandits and defending themselves.

    He said that their courageous response to the attack by the bandits was worthy of commendation and emulation by others.

    Bagudu said that even though some members of the community had sadly lost their lives, the fact that they routed the bandits and killed some of them was heartwarming.

    He urged them and other communities in the state to remain courageous and resilient in ensuring peace and security in their area.

    The governor said those who lost their lives in defending the community did not die in vain, but died as martyrs.

    “We are here to sympathise with you over the unfortunate incident and also to commend your extraordinary effort of defending yourselves.

    “People of Zuggu, I commend you for displaying courage to defend yourselves,” he added.

    Bagudu said there has been a spill into the state of bandits displaced by recent military onslaught in neighbouring states.

    He warned that government would deal decisively with those spreading false information capable of scaring people away from their homes.

    “We should be our brothers keepers in period of despair, not to pass false information that could instill fear,” he added.

    He commended security agents for their efforts in sustaining peace across the state.
    Special prayers were offered for the repose of those who lost their lives during the attack.

    The village head of Zuggu, Alhaji Hamisu Magaji, appreciated the governor for the visit and provision of relief materials to the community.

    Meanwhile, Bagudu was also at Yar Besse village in Shanga Local Government Area, to assess the level of damage caused by flooding.

    He sympathised with those who lost their farms and houses, and urged them to regard the disaster as destined by God.

    He said that the government would offer more assistance to the victims and prayed Allah to guard against a recurrence of the disaster.

    Responding, the District Head of Shanga, Alhaji Nasiru Jafaru expressed gratitude to the governor for the visit.

    Also The Vice Chairman of the local government, Alhaji Adamu Ladan thanked the governor for his compassion and provision of relief materials to the victims.

    The Kebbi Governor, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, has approved the dissolution of the State Executive Council with immediate effect.

    The dissolution is contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Babale Umar-Yauri and made available to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.

    “The governor is sincerely appreciative of the individual contributions of each member of the cabinet.

    “He thanked them for their dedication to duty and ensuring peace and steady development of the state during their tenure in office,” it said.

    The statement said Bagudu commended all the members of the dissolved council for their performance.

    “A reconstituted state executive council would be announced soon.

    ” Some of the members of the dissolved council may be reappointed as well as others from outside,” the statement said.

    Security: Buhari has invested much in security, welfare of IDPs – Bagudu

    The Kebbi Governor, Atiku Bagudu says President Muhammadu Buhari has made tremendous investments in security and welfare of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across the country.
    Bagudu stated this on Sunday in Ribah, Danko Wasagu Local Government at the the distribution of relief materials to IDPs by the National Commission of Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCRMIDP).
    He said that the Federal Government was recruiting more security personnel, while modern equipment, arms and ammunition were provided to the security agencies.
    “The security challenges we are facing are not peculiar to our country or the state alone.
    “I urge the people in the state, especially in the insecurity affected areas to be resilient, patient and continue to be your brothers’ keepers.
    “The people of our state will not be cowed down by a few unscrupulous elements who are bent on tormenting the law abiding citizens of the country.
    “Kebbi state is not doing badly in terms of the prevailing security challenges as peace is gradually returning to areas affected by banditry in Zuru Emirate,” he said.
    Bagudu acknowledged the courage of farmers in the state, adding that bumper harvests were being recorded in the state.
    “Our farmers are resilient and continue their cultivation, the situation did not deter them,” the governor said.
    Earlier, the Federal Commissioner of NCRMIDP, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman, said that the relief materials were provided to the IDPs to alleviate their suffering.
    She lauded Bagudu for according top priority to the welfare of the people of the state.
    Suleiman said, “a medical outreach would be conducted in the camp to check the health status of the IDPs.”
    Also speaking, the Chairman of Danko/Wasagu LGA, Alhaji Hussaini Bena, lauded to the Federal Government for providing the relief assistance to the IDPs in the area.
    “Such an assistance will go along way in reducing the hardship being faced by the IDPs in the camp,” he said.
    In his remarks, the Chief of Wasagu, Alhaji Musa Mukhtar, pleaded with the government to mobilize more personnel to the area in order to provide adequate security for the IDPs to return to their homes .
    “Our people are hardworking and resilient, what they need is not relief assistance, but security to go back home and cultivate their farms.
    “Give them security and they will feed the entire state and beyond, because they are real farmers.
    “Most of the refugees you see here are from the neighboring states displaced by the activities of bandits in their states,” he said.
