BREAKING: Ousted Malian president Keita suffers stroke

Former Malian president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who has not been seen in public since his August 18 ouster in a coup, has been hospitalised after suffering a brief stroke-like attack, a doctor said Wednesday.

Keita, 75, was admitted to a private clinic in the capital Bamako on Tuesday evening, he said.

“According to thorough analysis, the president was the victim of a transient ischaemic attack. It is an alert, but he is recovering well at the moment,” a doctor at the facility said.

A transient ischaemic attack, also called a mini-stroke, happens when the blood supply to the brain is disrupted for a few minutes, causing stroke-like symptoms such as numbness on one side of the body, vision difficulties or confusion in understanding speech.

Although the symptoms are typically short-lasting, they are often a warning sign for future strokes, experts say.

Earlier Wednesday, an aide to Keita and a medical source had said the former president had been admitted to the clinic for a routine checkup and that he was expected to return home in the coming hours.

Asked how long Keita would stay, the doctor said: “It’s true, his return home was initially envisaged for today, but right now he is under observation.”

The president was ousted by young military officers who mutinied at a base near Bamako before heading into the city, where they seized Keita and other leaders.

Hours later, Keita announced on national TV that he was stepping down.

He was released on August 27 by the new junta, who returned him to his residence in Bamako, where according to his entourage he has limited access to a phone and the internet.

The junta has said that Keita is authorised to leave the country for medical care if need be.

Keita, who was two years into his second five-year term, had been battling mounting protests fuelled by his handling of a bloody jihadist insurgency and failure to turn around Mali’s floundering economy.

    Ousted Malian President, Keita hospitalised

Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, the Malian president ousted in a military coup last month, was hospitalized late Tuesday at a private clinic, intensifying fears about the 75-year-old’s health after being detained for 10 days by the junta that seized power.

Keïta’s condition was not immediately known, and it was unclear whether he would be evacuated abroad for medical treatment. His hospitalization was confirmed to The Associated Press by two people at the clinic who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The former Malian president has appeared gaunt in recent photographs, and concerns mounted during his time in military custody in barracks outside the capital.

Keïta, who was first elected in 2013, had three years left in his second term when mutinous soldiers detained him at his residence. Hours later, he appeared in a midnight broadcast on state television, telling Malians he would resign immediately so that no blood would be shed for him to stay in power.

Tens of thousands of people had demonstrated against the government in the months leading up to Mr. Keïta’s overthrow. But the international community has denounced his ouster, and a group of regional governments has placed sanctions on Mali, shutting borders and halting financial transactions.

France, the United Nations and others called for his immediate release, and he ultimately was taken to his home Thursday where he remained under military surveillance. A relative told The A.P. that Mr. Keïta had been unable to see his personal doctor.

There is widespread concern Mali’s political upheaval could allow Islamic extremists to extend their reach, upending several years of international support including a U.N peacekeeping mission that has been working to stabilize the country. After Mali’s last coup, in 2012, extremists seized power in towns across the north only to be ousted the following year by a French-led military intervention.

BREAKING: Ousted Mali President, Keita, freed by coup leaders

Coup leaders in Mali have released ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita from detention, a spokesman for the junta Djibrilla Maiga said on Thursday.

Reuters quoted him as saying: “He was freed this morning, (and) he has returned to his home.”

“President IBK is free in his movements, he’s at home,” a spokesman for the junta, Djibrila Maiga, said referring to Keita by his initials, as many Malians do.

A Keita relative, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the 75-year-old former leader had returned overnight to his house in the Sebenikoro district of the capital Bamako.

Keita, prime minister Boubou Cisse and other senior officials were seized by rebel troops led by young officers who staged a mutiny at a base near Bamako.

In the early hours of August 19, Keita appeared on national TV to announce his resignation, saying he had had no other choice, and wanted to avoid “bloodshed”.

The release of Keita and other leaders has been demanded by Mali’s neighbours and allies and international organisations.

Former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan, heading a team from the regional bloc ECOWAS, was given access to Keita last Saturday, and said he seemed “very fine.”

BREAKING: Mali President, Keita arrested by mutinying soldiers

Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita was arrested on Tuesday by mutinying soldiers in the capital Bamako.

The arrest came after soldiers mutinied at the Kati army base outside of Bamako and rounded up a number of senior civilian and military officials.

Meanwhile, West African leaders condemned the military mutiny in Mali on Tuesday, urging soldiers to return to their barracks as rising extremism threatens the region’s stability.

The 15-nation bloc known as ECOWAS said it “vigorously condemns” the uprising, which started with gunshots at an army base and tactical vehicles rolling into the capital, Bamako.

ECOWAS “calls on the military to return to their positions without delay,” the regional bloc said in a statement.

The confusion in Bamako — including reports of blocked roads and officials under military arrest — comes as protesters seek to oust President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.

Tens of thousands of Malians have flooded the capital of the West African nation in recent months, accusing Keïta of botching the response to a fast-spreading Islamist insurgency while allowing the nation’s economy to crumble.

  • Naby Keita will not join Liverpool in January, say RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig have told BBC Sport they have no intention of allowing Liverpool to complete the signing of midfielder Naby Keita before the summer.

Last August, the Reds agreed to pay £51m for the 22-year-old Guinea international, who will join in July.

Reports this week claimed Leipzig would accept an extra payment of about £15m if Liverpool wanted Keita in January.

However, the German club said: “There is nothing new about this situation and so that speculation is not true.”

They added: “Nothing has changed and our position hasn’t changed from before regarding this transfer.”

Liverpool formed an amicable relationship with RB Leipzig during talks over Keita last summer and will not make any move to close an early deal unless they are given encouragement by the Bundesliga, which has not yet been forthcoming.

The Anfield club have, however, always been happy to complete the deal as quickly as possible and the position could change if RB Leipzig alter their stance this month and fresh terms can be agreed.

RB Leipzig currently lie fifth in the Bundesliga, which resumes this weekend after the winter break, and want to keep Keita for a renewed push to qualify for the Champions League, as well as for their Europa League campaign, where they face Napoli in the last 32.
