One feared dead, others injured as Venza rams into Keke in Lagos

The life of a commercial tricycle operator was lost on Tuesday with two others sustaining various degree of injuries following  a tragic accident occurred on Egbe Bridge, inward Ikotun, Lagos.

The incident involved a Toyota Venza and a commercial tricycle, commonly known as “Marwa”.

Preliminary reports suggest that the Venza, which was reportedly speeding from the Ejigbo axis, attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre atop the bridge. In the process, it collided head-on with the tricycle coming from the opposite direction.

The impact of the crash resulted in the instant death of the tricycle driver. Two passengers—a man and a woman—suffered multiple fractures and other serious injuries.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials swiftly responded to the scene, carrying out a careful rescue operation to extricate the injured victims from the wreckage.

Officers from the Ikotun Police Division later transported the survivors to the General Hospital in Isolo for urgent medical attention.

The spokesperson of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident, noting that the driver of the Toyota Venza fled the scene immediately after the accident.

Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect, vowing to bring him to justice.

“Law enforcement authorities have commenced a concerted manhunt to apprehend the fugitive motorist and subject him to the full rigours of the law,” Adebayo said in a statement.

Reacting to the tragedy, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured victims.

He also issued a stern warning to motorists about the dangers of reckless driving, particularly on bridges and elevated roads where visibility is limited.

The LASTMA boss urged all road users to remain vigilant, exercise patience, and strictly adhere to traffic regulations to prevent future tragedies on Lagos roads.

“This heartrending incident serves as a grim testament to the lethal consequences of impatience and the blatant flouting of traffic laws,” Bakare-Oki said.

“It is imperative that all road users cultivate discipline, foresight, and an uncompromising adherence to safety protocols to avert needless tragedies on our roads.”

Woman dies inside keke in Lagos

A yet-to-identified woman on Friday died in a tricycle while in transit at Isheri, Idimu area of Lagos State.

According to reports, the deceased had boarded the tricycle along the Isheri-Igando Road and was headed to the Isheri when she gave up the ghost.

The tricycle rider was said to have notified her of arriving at her destination, when he discovered that she was motionless.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said  the rider drew the attention of passersby who rushed to the scene and realised that the passenger was no longer breathing.

He said, “I was close to the Isheri bus stop when I heard the tricycle rider shouting for help. When we moved close to the spot, we saw a woman placing her head on the middle of the barricade of the tricycle unresponsive.

“The rider said he was supposed to drop her at Isheri which is the last bus stop for tricycle riders along the area and when they got there, the rider expected her to step out and pay her fare only to find out that she wasn’t responding. That was when he raised the alarm. The place was crowded as it appeared strange.”

  • Crime: Delta Government speaks on banning ‘okada’, ‘keke’ in Asaba

Crime: Delta Government speaks on banning ‘okada’, ‘keke’ in Asaba

Delta Government on Friday said it was not planning to ban commercial tricycle (Keke) and motorcycle (Okada) operations in Asaba.

Mrs Joan Mrakpor, Director-General, Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, said this while briefing newsmen in Asaba.

Mrakpor said the state government would checkmate the operators’ excesses.

She said that the state government would partner the `Keke and Okada’ union to streamline the operators’ activities to check the new wave of crime allegedly being perpetrated by them in the state capital.

She noted that the aftermath of the EndSARS protest which led to a huge public and private property destruction in the state revealed that some `Keke and Okada’ operators outside Asaba were the hijackers of the protest.

According to her, the state government will on Monday in partnership with the Keke and Okada Riders Union commence a process of identification of genuine members of the union to ensure security of life and property in the state.

“Government is not planning to ban `Keke’ in Delta and it is not government’s intention to allow crime to thrive by not checking the excesses of the operators.

“After the EndSARS issues, we noticed that things had fallen out of place but we feel that things need to fall in place but unfortunately, there are some criminal activities noticed that are worrisome.

“Keke has suddenly become a great threat but the real operators in Delta don’t push people out to dispossess them of their belongings. It is strange and it came after the EndSARS protest,” Mrakpor said.

She urged the unionists to streamline, identify their members and report strange and fraudulent operators who hid their identities to commit crime to the authority.

She said that the state taskforce would commence ”Operation Clean up Asaba,” saying that all vehicles, private and commercial, must provide waste baskets for their passengers to avoid littering the state capital.

On his part, Mr Charles Aniagwu, the Commissioner for Information, acknowledged the fact that tricycle and commercial motorcyclists had made good contributions in the partnership with the state government but stressed the need to streamline their activities.

He called on the various unions to support the government in checkmating the criminal elements and bringing them to book to ensure the safety of passengers.

According to him, no Keke rider will come in from the neighbouring Anambra State and other communities to operate within the state capital territory.

“We want to ensure a cleaner capital territory; a 24-hour city life without threat to the people in Asaba.

“In streamlining the operations, we shall define the routes of the Keke operators and also ensure that nobody intimidates the taskforce and the union from performing their roles,” Aniagwu said.

Chief Obi Nzete, State Chairman, Keke and Okada Riders Union, represented by its Financial Secretary, Mr Tony Chukwudi, pledged the union’s readiness to partner the state government in fishing out the criminals among them.
