Why I gave up on Nigerian men-Kel

Popular rapper, Kelechi Ohia better known as Kel has recounted the experience that made her give up on Nigerian men.

In a tweet shared via her Twitter page on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, the rapper said no Nigerian man can shock her again after her last experience with a married man who went to great lengths to hide his marital status.

“The time I knew no Nigerian man could shock me again was after I dated a dude with an imaginary dead twin brother in an imaginary accident which caused his knee problems (another side story), just to explain the existence of a female presence in his life, which was his own wife,” she tweeted.

Earlier in the year, Kel debunked claims that she is depressed.

“She said the news generated series of calls from friends who wanted to know about her health state. “So I quoted my tweet last night about being exhausted and drained with an explanation that I’m alright cos apparently some blogs took it up as me being depressed and my friend called me to ask what’s wrong cos people had been calling and sending her messages asking the same,” she tweeted.

“Dear blogs, I am fine. I am not your recent headline. Kindly make enquiries with people that actually know me before jumping to foolish confusions.”

“If you’re trying to post about me, post about my music or my food business. Leave me out of your shadiness. Nonsense.”

“Now I gotta call my mother to explain to her that I’m not depressed before she reads about me being depressed when I’m not depressed”.

TNG Special: From glory to obscurity, cases of Nigerian struggling musicians

Though the Nigerian music industry continues to play a significant role in the African music space, there are tales of talented artistes who once reigned supreme struggling to stage a come back

    Olu Maintain

Olumide Edwards Adegbulu, aka Olu Maintain once serenaded the Nigerian music industry with hit songs like Yahooze and Nawti.

However years after, the former member of the defunct pop group, ‘Maintain’ has found it hard to bounce back into reckoning. The last song posted on his YouTube Vevo account was in 2018 with over 18,000 views.

    AY.com

Little or nothing was known about the singer, Ayoola Johnson, fondly referred to as Ay.com till 2009, when he released the hit song, ‘Pass Me Your Love,’ which featured Terry G. Fast forward to 2020, the artiste is yet to release another hit song.

In an interview, he noted that he was distracted after he got married.

“I got married after my first album; I was a bit distracted. I was a young man when I got married; I got married at the age of 25. My wife and I attended the same secondary school, we were both young people who were in love and we had the opportunity to get married. I have produced more songs after that, but the industry is messed up now. I’m not desperate about music. I am doing music for the passion”.

    Klever Jay

“Koni Koni love” is a phrase used when one lover manipulates the other in a relationship.

Klever Jay banked on the popularity on this phrase to push himself into reckoning with the song “Koni Koni Love”. It instantly became a street anthem. He followed up with “Igboro ti daru”, produced by Ksolo. Fast forward to 2020, Klever Jay has however not been able to replicate that success.

The last song posted on his YouTube channel was ‘Owo’ ft Koker released in 2016.

    Kel

When Kelechi Ohia a.k.a Kel burst into the music scene over 12 years ago, she was touted as the next big. Armed with an undeniable talent, sex appeal and delivery, Kel had the perfect recipe for success. However, after the release of her ‘Wa waa alright’ single , Kel lost her momentum.

The busty rapper recently released a new single titled ‘ Credit Alert’. We hope it shoots her back into reckoning.

    Chidinma

Since leaving her former record company, Capital Hill Records, Nigerian singer, Chidinma Ekile, has been struggling to stay relevant in the music industry.

After she won Project Fame West Africa in 2010, music pundits predicted that she was going to be the next big thing. Though Ekile has achieved what her age-mates will only dream of, she is yet to release any hit song in years.

  • Jcole: Kel laments over how rappers are being treated

Nigerian rapper turned entrepreneur, Kel has lamented over how show promoters treat Nigerian rappers.

Her rant was triggered after attending a concert where American rapper, J. Cole performed.

She revealed how concert-goers sang along to both new and old songs of the rapper, to the surprise of the singer.

Kel wrote on Twitter: “After witnessing J.Cole perform last night, with a basic band and DJ, and 2 backup singers, and seeing so many people rapping along to old and new songs (KOD), I’d like to ask, why exactly do we have a problem with rap music in Nigeria? And by basic, I mean he had the regular band instruments; drums, keyboard, bass etc. Nothing too fancy. It was just him, the singers and a big stage with his mic stand.

“After last night, you can’t tell me Nigerians don’t like rap music, cos this album was just released about a week ago. And then he Cole performed some old stuff, which people sang along to as well with just as much, even more enthusiasm

“So again, I ask, why exactly do we have a problem with hip hop in Nigeria??? And I’m talking real hip hop? Why do we “shun” the hip hop artists we have over here? Why do we not support and love them as much”.
