Yetunde Bakare slates alleged millionaire kidnapper Lyon over mercy appeal

Nollywood Yoruba actress, Yetunde Bakare, has scolded suspected millionaire kidnapper, John Ewa, alias John Lyon, who was recently arrested in Abuja for begging for mercy.

According to the actress, Lyon did not have mercy on his victims.

She said this while reacting to a viral video of the alleged kidnapper begging for forgiveness after his arrest.

“Begging for Mercy when you don’t have mercy on your victims. God is indeed patient,” the actress wrote on Instagram on Monday.

The police on Monday paraded Lyon alongside three members of his suspected kidnap gang at the Police Officers Mess, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.

Lyon has been on the wanted list of the police for various alleged abductions in the state.

In the viral video, he pleaded for forgiveness after he was arrested, claiming that his wife was just delivered of a baby boy.

Lyon also claimed he only participated in two kidnapping operations before his arrest.“Forgive me, make una forgive me, my wife just born sef, a boy,” he said.

According to his bio on Facebook, the Bayelsa State indigene is a former member of staff of Sterling Bank.

In 2019, the suspect was said to have put his weight behind the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Bayelsa, David Lyon.

But in February 2020, the Supreme Court sacked Lyon barely 24 hours to his inauguration.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Lyon was arrested on Saturday in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, by officers of the Bayelsa police command.

A video showing the alleged kidnapper being handcuffed surfaced on social media over the weekend.

In the less than two-minute video, Lyon confessed to kidnapping, adding that he only joined the syndicate to carry out two operations.

He was also seen begging for forgiveness over his alleged crime, saying his wife had just delivered a baby.

“Sir, please forgive me. My wife just born self,” he said in a video while shedding tears.

According to his Facebook profile, Lyon worked for a bank from 2008 to 2014.

He also identified himself as the chief executive officer of Lions Interior Hub.

Lyon’s social media posts feature him showing off luxurious items, displays of religiosity and posting motivational quotes about success.

In a Facebook post published on April 27, 2020, he told his followers to keep working hard and “stay safe”.

“Nothing good ever cames from too many people knowing your business. Being private and lowkey is the best way to be.#Hustle Hard #stay safe,” he wrote.

TheNewsGuru.com had earlier reported that Lyon denied being part of kidnap operations, saying ” I was misled to show them where this person is”.

  • Police arrest 2 serial kidnappers in Ondo

Police arrest 2 serial kidnappers in Ondo

Police in Ondo State says they have arrested two 35-year-old serial kidnappers, Olaoye Oluwatosin and Taiwo Olamide.

The suspects allegedly kidnapped three persons in Ofosu, Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State between 2021 and 2022.

Police spokesperson, SP Funmilayo Odunlami, paraded the duo before newsmen on Tuesday in Akure.

Odunlami said they kidnapped one Mrs. Folasade Akinloye from her shop at Ofosu on Aug. 28, 2022, at 10:40 p.m. using an ash colour Toyota Camry with registration number AKD 797 AP.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the suspects were also responsible for the kidnap one Mrs. Folasade Akinselure on July 13, 2021, and that of Ms. Stella Stephen on March 9, 2022.

“They confessed to committing the crime. The victims were rescued unhurt.

“Police also recovered the Toyota Camry car and two cutlasses the suspects used in committing the crime from them,’’ Odunlami said.

She assured that the suspects would be arraigned after further investigation.

Odunlami also told newsmen that the police arrested one Adesina Shittu of Aule in Akure for theft and for faking his own kidnap.

She explained that a complainant reported to the police that he gave a Bajaj tricycle valued N1.6 million to Shittu for use as a commercial vehicle.

Shittu was supposed to be delivering N4,000 to the complainant on daily basis.

“Three days later, Shittu called the complainant and claimed that he was kidnapped, and that the complainant should assist him to pay the ransom to secure his release.

“During investigation, forensic analysis showed that the suspect was in Badagry, Lagos State and not at Igoba in Akure where he claimed he was being held hostage,’’ she said.

Odunlami said Shittu was arrested with the tricycle and taken back to Akure.

Shittu would also be arraigned soon, the police spokesperson assured.

  • Timeline of kidnap kingpin Evans’s trial

Timeline of kidnap kingpin Evans’s trial

News of arrest of kidnap kingpin, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike (alias Evans) by the police on June 10, 2017, dominated Nigeria’s media space the following 12 hours and beyond. His trial continued to hold the attention of the media and the general public.

Evans was arrested at his residence at No. 3, Fred Shogboyede St, Magodo, Lagos.

He was accused by the then DCP Abba Kyari-led Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of kidnapping high profile Nigerians and demanding huge ransoms in foreign currencies for their release.

His four and a half years’ trial before an Ikeja High Court was plagued by delays caused by applications filed by counsel as well as Evans’s frequent change of counsel and the lockdown necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 64-day strike in 2021 by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) also contributed to the delay.

This is a timeline of the trial which culminated in a judgment on Friday with the court convicting him and sentencing him to life imprisonment.

The trial is of the five trials the kidnap kingpin and his accomplices are facing before the High Courts in Lagos State.

    AUG. 30, 2017

Evans and five others: Uche Amadi, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi and Victor Aduba were charged on two counts of conspiracy and kidnapping before Justice Hakeem Oshodi of an Ikeja High Court.

Evans, Amadi and Nwachukwu pleaded guilty to the charges while Uchechukwu, the only female defendant, Ifeanyi and Aduba pleaded not guilty.

According to prosecution team led by the then Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Adeniji Kazeem, Evans and his accomplices kidnapped the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Maydon Pharmaceuticals, Mr Donatus Dunu, on Feb. 14, 2017, and received 223,000 euros as ransom for his release.

Five of the defendants were remanded at the then Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison while Uchechukwu, the only female defendant, was remanded at the then Kirikiri Female Prison.

    OCT. 19, 2017

Evans and his co-defendants were re-arraigned on an amended two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping.

The defendants were earlier charged under Sections 271(3) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. On Oct.19, 2017, they were charged under Section 2(1) of the Kidnapping Prohibition Law, No. 13, Laws of Lagos State, 2017, and Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

In a dramatic turn of events, Evans pleaded not guilty.

    NOV. 3, 2017

Anselem Dunu, Donatus Dunu’s brother, testified as the first prosecution witness in the trial. He narrated how he raised N100 million and converted it to 223,000 euros as ransom for his brother’s release.

Oshodi dismissed an application filed by Evans’s counsel, Mr Olukoya Ogungbeje, seeking to quash the two-count charge brought against him by Lagos State Government.

    NOV. 17, 2017

Evans and his co-defendants complained about their living conditions at the Kirikiri Prisons, to Oshodi.

“This is unfair, I have not been given food and change of clothes. I was not given the opportunity to bathe since Wednesday,” he said.

Oshodi ordered the then Director in Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Ms. Titilayo Shitta-Bey, to investigate the accusation. The judge also dismissed a bail application of Uchechukwu, the only female defendant.

    JAN. 19, 2018

Anselem’s cross-examination could not commence because Nwachukwu, a co-defendant, had yet to secure legal representation.

    MARCH 2, 2018

One of Evans co-defendants, Victor Aduba, an ex-soldier, was refused bail.

Oshodi had considered the gravity of the alleged offences and the possibility of interfering with trial, before arriving at the decision.

Oshodi, in a separate ruling, foreclosed Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu’s chance of cross-examining Anselem due to his unwillingness to cross-examine him by himself as he had no legal representation.

    MARCH 16, 2018

Donatius Dunu, the CEO of Maydon Pharmaceuticals and the complainant in the case, testified in the trial as the second prosecution witness.

He narrated how he was abducted at 7.30 p.m. on Obokun Street, Ilupeju, Lagos, while heading home from work. He said that an initial ransom of two million dollars was demanded, and his hands and feet were shackled during his 88-day stay in captivity.

He said that due to a fluctuation in dollar rate, the ransom was changed to one million euros which was negotiated down to 500,000 euros. He testified that his brother, Anselem, was able to raise 223,000 euros.

He said he escaped from captivity while his captors were asleep, and alerted the authorities. He was cross-examined by Evans’s counsel.

    MAY 11, 2018

The third prosecution witness and a Manager at Maydon Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Mr Uchenna Okagwu, narrated how he paid 232,000 euros as ransom to Evans and his accomplices to secure the release of his boss. The money was dropped off at a location at Okota, Lagos.

“As I walked to the back of my vehicle, I was three steps away, I was asked to drop the ransom, I did so and was told to move immediately after dropping the money.

“As I looked around, I only saw a vehicle parked at the beginning of the street with full lights on, the vehicle looked like an SUV.”

Under cross-examination by Ogungbeje, Okagwu said he didn’t see anyone while dropping the ransom and that the money was not given directly to any person.

    SEPT 11, 2018

The fourth prosecution witness, Insp Idowu Haruna of the Intelligence Response Team, told the court that the defendants were arrested following Donatus Dunu’s escape from captivity.

Led in evidence by state counsel, Mr Adebayo Haroun, the investigating police officer said that the statements of the defendants were not obtained under duress but rather in a conducive environment.

Evans’s new counsel, Mr Chinonye Obiagwu, however, opposed the admissibility of the statements on the premise that they were obtained under duress. This prompted Oshodi to order a trial-within-trial.

    OCT 26, 2018

Taking the stand at the trial-within-trial, Evans claimed that his confessional statement to the police was not obtained voluntarily.

He claimed that policemen tortured him and made him to witness executions in a bid to get him to admit to the alleged crimes.

    FEB. 1, 2019

In a ruling, Oshodi admitted Evans’s June 11, 2017 confessional statement in evidence, saying that there was no proof before the court that he was tortured by the police.

The judge noted that the 1999 Constitution did not require that statements to the police must be in a specific form, adding that based on Evans’s videotaped confession played in court during the trial, there was no proof he was tortured to provide details of his misdeeds.

    JAN. 11, 2020

Concluding his evidence, Haruna narrated how Evans spent the ransom he collected from his victims.

“The ransoms collected by the first defendant were used for purchasing houses on Magodo Estate, Lagos, where he was arrested. He also bought a house on Emmanuel Keshi Street on Magodo Estate.

“He bought a house located in Accra, Ghana. The first defendant also bought landed property in Anambra State from the ransom,” he said.

After Haruna’s testimony, Haroun told the court that prosecution would be closing its case against the defendants.

    AUG. 14, 2020

Oshodi gave a ruling on a no-case submission filed by Evans’s co-defendants, Uchechukwu, Ifeanyi, Nwachukwu and Aduba.

He said the co-defendants had a case to answer due to substantial evidence before the court. He ordered them to open their defence.

After the ruling, the judge ordered Evans’s new counsel, Mr Oyekunle Falabi, from the law chambers of Victor Opara (SAN) to write an undertaking that the law chambers would conclude the case.

The judge said Evans had developed a habit of engaging services of lawyers who “disappear halfway through trial”, noting that it was causing delays in the case.

Since the trial began on Aug. 30, 2017, Evans had been represented at different times by Mr Olukoya Ogungbeje, Mr Noel Brown, Mr Chinonye Obiagwu and Mr Olanrewaju Ajanaku, all of whom withdrew from the case.

    JAN 22, 2021

Evans opened his defence. He denied allegations of conspiracy and kidnapping against him, insisting that he was a legitimate businessman.

Led in defence by his counsel, Opara, he said: “My lord, my name is not Evans, and I don’t have a nickname. I’m a legitimate businessman who deals in haulage and ornaments.”

He said he was coerced into admitting being a kidnapper after the police, in a bid to make him to confess, extra-judicially killed four individuals in his presence.

He also testified that he had never met the other defendants, except on the day the police paraded them before the media at Area F, Police Command, Ikeja.

    JUNE 29, 2021

Evans’s sister, Mrs Ndubuisi Obiechina, testified as the second defence witness. Led in evidence by Opara, she told the court that her brother was tortured by IRT operatives to confess to the crimes.

Evans co-defendants, Uche Amadi and Ogechi Uchechukwu, a married couple, also presented their defence.

Amadi told the court that he was arrested alongside his wife in Port Harcourt, adding that he had never been to Lagos and that he did not know or have any relationship with Evans.

Uchechukwu who married Amadi in 2004, in her defence, disputed her husband’s claim.

“If anyone comes to this court and says that Amadi has never been to Lagos except in 2017 when he was arrested, then that person must be lying,” she said.

    AUG. 3, 2021

Evans’s co-defendants, Ifeanyi and Aduba, two ex soldiers of the Nigerian Army, denied being accomplices.

Responding to questions from Opara, Ifeanyi said, “I have never taken part in any kidnap activities in my life. I have never attempted to kidnap anyone before or conspired with Evans to kidnap the victim (Dunu).”

Aduba, led in evidence by his counsel, Mr Emmanuel Ochai, said he was forced to sign a confessional statement in police custody after three men — Felix Chinemeren, Paul Samyan and Chukwuma Nwosu — who were initially paraded to the media as kidnappers, were extra-judicially killed by an IRT team.

Following the evidence of the two former soldiers, defence closed its case.

    DEC. 10, 2021

Oshodi announced Feb. 25, 2022, as judgment date, after listening to oral submissions of final written addresses by prosecution and defence counsel.

Opara (SAN), in a final written address dated Nov.1, 2021, said there was no evidence directly linking Evans to the alleged crimes. He said that the kidnap victim, who was blindfolded throughout his 88-day ordeal, did not state in his testimony in court that he could physically identify Evans.

Haroun, via a final written address dated Nov. 30, 2021, asked the court to convict the defendants, saying that the kidnap victim had given direct evidence about how he was kidnapped, how he escaped and the roles of each defendant.

“We have circumstantial evidence linking the first defendant (Evans) to the crime and we also have confessional statements and video recordings of him,” Haroun said.

    FEB. 25, 2022

Oshodi, in a three-hour judgment, found Evans, Amadi and Nwachukwu guilty of the two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping brought against them by Lagos State Government.

He said that none of the convicts showed any remorse during the trial.

“Despite the huge evidence stacked against them, they tried to lie their way out.

“In this respect, the first, second and fourth defendants are each hereby sentenced to life imprisonment. This is the sentence of the court,” he said.

Other defendants – Uchechukwu and the two ex-soldiers – Ifeanyi and Aduba – were discharged and acquitted. The judge held that there was no evidence linking them to the crimes.

  • Evans showed no remorse during trial despite huge evidence – Judge

Evans showed no remorse during trial despite huge evidence – Judge

After a five-year trial, kidnap kingpin, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike alias Evans, on Friday got life imprisonment for conspiring with two others to kidnap Mr Donatius Dunu, Chief Executive Officer, Maydon Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Justice Hakeem Oshodi of an Ikeja High Court, who passed the sentence, said that Evans and two others did not show any remorse during the trial in spite of huge evidence against them.

Lagos State Government prosecuted Evans and five others before the court.

In a three-hour judgment, Oshodi held that the state proved its case beyond reasonable doubt against Evans and two of his co-defendants – Uche Amadi and Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu.

The judge convicted the trio on a two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping.

He, however, discharged and acquitted the other co-defendants – Ogechi Uchechukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi an ex-soldier; and Victor Aduba, also an ex-soldier.

Oshodi held that there was no evidence linking them to the crimes.

“It has to be stated that none of the three defendants showed any remorse during the trial. Despite the huge evidence stacked against them, they tried to lie their way out.

“The court is also mindful of the harrowing experience of the victim of the kidnapping, to be restrained and blindfolded during the period of his captivity until his escape.

“A lesson must be taught. In this respect, the law is the law which must be upheld.

“Section 2(1) of the Kidnapping Prohibition Law of Lagos State, 2017 prescribes a punishment of life imprisonment. The court has no discretion.

“In this respect, the first, second and fourth defendants – Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike a.k.a Evans, Uche Amadi and Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu – are each hereby sentenced to life imprisonment. This is the sentence of the court,” he held.

Earlier, Oshodi dismissed an allegation made by Evans in his final written address to the effect that he was tortured by the police into confessing to the crimes, in contravention of Section 9(3) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

The judge said that two video tapes of Evans’s confession to the police, which where played in court, showed him smiling while admitting to the crimes.

He added that a close analysis of his physical appearance in the videos showed no evidence of torture.

Oshodi noted that during the trial, Evans claimed that on Feb. 14, 2017, the day Dunu was kidnapped, he was at home with his wife.

“He never elected to call his wife to corroborate this crucial fact, instead, he elected to call his sister (Mrs Ndubuisi Obiechina) to give evidence on his behalf.

“His sister, during cross-examination, agreed that she did not know the movement of the first defendant (Evans) on Feb. 14, 2017.

“Without mincing words, the evidence of DW2 (Obiechina) is tainted.

“She decided to focus on the extrajudicial statement made by the first defendant despite the fact that the court had undertaken an investigation on the validity of the statement in a trial-within-trial,” he said.

Before the sentence was passed, counsel to Evans, Mr H. O. Ajibola, in his allocutus (plea for mercy), told the court that he believed that Evans had turned a new leaf.

“I pray my lord tempers justice with mercy; this is his first conviction,” he said.

Counsel to Amadi, Ms Evelyn Obogwu, said that her client was a first-time offender.

“He has a son and aged parents who depend on him for livelihood. I urge my lord to be lenient,” she prayed.

Mr Olanrewaju Ajanaku, counsel to Nwachukwu, also pleaded for mercy for his client, saying that the father of three had become remorseful.

“I pray your lordship will temper justice with mercy and integrate him into the society because he has learnt his lesson and seen the folly of his ways,” he said.

Lagos State Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Ms Titilayo Shitta-Bey, in her response, prayed for a harsh sentence on the convicts to serve as a deterrent.

“In view of the gravity of the offence which is very prevalent in our society, I urge this honourable court to impose a harsh sentence that will serve as a deterrent to people of similar minds.

“The message has to be sent out loud and clear, through the punishment meted out to the defendants, that there will be zero tolerance for this type of criminal act in our society,” Shitta-Bey said.

NAN reports that this is the first judgment delivered in the five kidnapping trials Evans is facing at the various High Courts of Lagos State.

Evans and his co-defendants were arraigned before Oshodi on Aug. 31, 2017, on a two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping.

According to prosecution, Dunu was kidnapped by Evans and his other gang members on Feb. 14, 2017, on Obokun Street, Ilupeju Road, Lagos State, and was shackled and blindfolded during his 88-day ordeal.

It said that the gang collected 223,000 euros as ransom from Dunu’s family for his release.

Prosecution closed its case on Jan. 10, 2020, after presenting four witnesses, including Dunu

Defence closed its case on Aug. 3, 2021, after the six defendants and Evans’s sister, Mrs Ndubuisi Obiechina testified.

The offences are in violation of Section 2(1) of the Kidnapping Prohibition Law, No. 13, Laws of Lagos State, 2017, and Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Police in Ogun State have arrested three suspected kidnappers while they were trying to collect ransom on two victims abducted at Abule Oba, along Alamala in Ayetoro, Yewa North local government area of the state.

The suspects, Abubakar Sodiq, 26, Ibrahim Kuaki, 24, and Muhammadu Dio, 22, were arrested on Tuesday, November 9, 2021.

The arrest followed a report lodged at the Ilupeju divisional headquarters that two men, who had gone to work at Abule Oba Alamala along Ayetoro road, were kidnapped by unknown gunmen.

The police public relations officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed this to newsmen in a statement in Abeokuta on Thursday.

Oyeyemi said that upon the report, the DPO Sabo Ilupeju mobilized his men in collaboration with men of the Nigeria army and the Social Orientation and Safety Corps( So-Safe) for aggressive bush combing in search of the victims and the suspects.

“While the exercise was going on, the operatives received information that the suspects had contacted the families of the victims and asked them to bring ransom money somewhere in the area.

“Having received the information, the operatives swiftly moved to the area and laid ambush for the hoodlums. Not quite long, the hoodlums appeared to collect the ransom and the operatives engaged them in a gun duel.

“Having realized that they were about to be overpowered, they took to their heels but were hotly chased and three amongst them were apprehended. Other members of the gang escaped with gunshot injuries which made them eventually abandon their victims, who were rescued unhurt and reunited with their families.” the police PRO said.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the anti-kidnapping unit of the state criminal investigation and intelligence department.

Police place N5m bounty on fleeing kidnapping suspects in Ekiti

The Ekiti State Police Command has placed N5 million as reward for genuine information on the whereabouts of four suspects over alleged kidnapping in the state.

ASP Sunday Abutu, the command’s spokesperson in a statement on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti, gave the names of the fleeing suspects as Banji Akeem, Samuel Ebira, Dele Jimoh and Dayo Igwe.

Abutu said the four now at large were mentioned as gang members by other arrested suspects currently in police custody.

According to him, the suspects were involved in the abduction of prominent Ekiti citizens in the last two years.

“The suspects already arrested mentioned one Banji Akeem a.k.a Oro, who was earlier arrested by the RRS operatives for the offence of armed robbery.

“They also mentioned one Samuel a.k.a Samuel Ebira, Jimoh Dele a.k.a Dele Petim, Dayo a.k.a Dayo Igwe and Johnson a.k.a Yellow Okada who are presently at large as other members of their gang,” he said.

Abutu, said the suspects were arrested through the relentless efforts of the men of the command.

According to him, the arrested suspects had confessed that they had been involved in various kidnappings in the state.

“They confirmed to be the brain behind the abduction of one Olowo Bola of Ipoti-Ekiti and the late Chief Abiodun Ajayi, who died from the injuries sustained while he jumped from the kidnappers vehicle, earlier this year, in Ado Ekiti,” he said.

The PPRO explained that the suspects usually kept their victims in the house of late Chief Ogunremi, located around Water Works in Ado-Ekiti or sometimes Ayere, a forest in Kogi.

He listed Items recovered from the suspects to include, one Toyota Corolla car, 13 rounds of live cartridges and two locally made double-barrel guns.

Abutu said that efforts were on to arrest other members of the gang who were at large, hence the N5 million reward for useful information that could lead to their arrest.

The command had on Monday paraded four suspected abductors of a petroleum dealer in Ekiti, Alhaji Suleiman Akinbami and wife of late Surveyor-General of the state, Mrs. Dapo Osalusi.

The suspects was also alleged to have also kidnapped another victim, Olowo Bolaji in Ipoti-Ekiti, Ijero Local Government Area of the state.

Abutu while parading the suspects said they were arrested by a team of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the command.

He said the suspects included the food supplier to the alleged kidnappers and a vulcaniser, who was their informant.

The command thanked residents who provided the information that led to the initial arrests, promising not to relent in ridding the state of crime.

“The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Unit of the Police Command in Ekiti has continued its raid and war against kidnapping with another breakthrough recorded in the arrest and parade of four suspected kidnappers.

“They were apprehended in connection with the abduction of a petroleum dealer, Alhaji Suleiman Akinbami in Ado-Ekiti on Jan. 10.

“The suspects during interrogations confessed to have actively participated in the abduction of the wife of former Ekiti State Surveyor-General, Mrs. Dapo Osalusi and another victim, Olowo Bolaji in Ipoti-Ekiti, Ijero Local Government Area of the state,” Abutu explained.
