How I escaped from Kidnappers- Bewaji Folashade reveals

Sadly, Nigerian entertainers are now becoming victims of kidnappers. In recent times, tales of kidnapping has become a regular tale entertainers tell.

Budding actress, Bewaji Folashade recently recounted her ugly experience in the hands of deadly kidnappers.

According to her:” They kidnapped me at 10.20 pm last night at Akinyemi Street, while I was coming from a movie location at Akobo. It got to a stage where I had to struggle with them on the motorcycle. I was afraid that they would kill me as soon as we got to their den.

“I thought it was better to be killed in an open place where other people would find my body and take me to the hospital. When we got to a spot where there were many people, the motorcycle fell down and I struggled with the kidnappers. People heard our voices and they started coming out to see what was happening. That was how the men fled and God saved me from their hands.”

Actors and actresses are still defenseless targets of abductors raiding the nooks and crannies of the country.

‘They almost killed me’, Hon. Durbunde recalls experience in kidnappers den

A member of the House of Representatives, Garba Umar-Durbunde, who was kidnapped by gunmen on Tuesday and later released said his abductors were armed to the teeth and almost slaughtered him.

Umar-Durbunde, who represents Sumaila/Takai Federal Constituency of Kano State, was freed by the kidnappers on Wednesday night after paying a sizeable ransom.

The incident took place in Jere, along the Abuja-Kaduna Road, as the lawmaker was driving to Kano from Abuja.

In an interview with The Punch on Thursday, the lawmaker said his abductors were 14 in number and that they were all “well armed with deadly weapons.”

He disclosed that they threatened to slaughter him if he would not produce a reasonable amount of money.

Describing the encounter as “terrible,” Durbunde said: “I spent over 21 hours with them and they released me about 7.30pm.

They kidnapped me and I travelled with them for over four hours into the bush from point to point.

I met 14 of them; they were armed to the teeth. They all carried guns, daggers and knives; it was terrible.

At a point, they threatened that they would slaughter me. Those people are fearless, ruthless; they can kill anybody.”

Although, he admitted that ransom was paid, Umar-Durbunde declined to give the figure.

However, unconfirmed sources said N10m was raised to secure the lawmaker’s freedom. The kidnappers reportedly demanded N60m initially.

According to Umar-Durbunde, the moment the kidnappers pulled him out of his vehicle, they saw his red cap and concluded that he was a political associate of a former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

They said I was a Kwankwaso ally,” he added.

He said though he was unharmed, he had to undergo immediate medical check-up after he was released because of the psychological trauma he faced in the hands of the kidnappers.

My brother, I thank God that I am now stable.

But, I must tell you that yesterday (Wednesday), I couldn’t sleep.

The experience was terrible and nobody should pray for it,” he stated.

  • Kidnappers of four Lagos pupils demand N1bn

Kidnappers of six pupils of Igbonla Model College, Epe, Lagos State, have contacted some parents of the victims, demanding N1bn ransom to release them.

According to Punch, the parents were contacted yesterday and allowed to briefly speak with their children. While two of them were asked to pay N400m each, another two were told to raise N100m per child.

They were reportedly told to meet with the school authorities and the state government to raise the money.

However, details of ransoms demanded from the remaining parents had yet to be ascertained by our correspondent as of the time of filing this report.

The gunmen had gained entry into the school premises at about 6am on Thursday through the creek at the back of the college and headed for the boys’ hostel after breaking the school fence.

They broke the hostel doors, seized 10 senior secondary school pupils and led them to the shore where their boat was parked.

After profiling their family backgrounds, four pupils were released, while the assailants whisked away the remaining six pupils identified as Peter Jonah, Isiaq Rahmon, Adebayo George, Judah Agbausi, Pelumi Philips and Farouq Yusuf.

It was reported that the gunmen had written the school authorities three days before the incident, informing them of the attack.

They made good their threat in the dawn after policemen and soldiers, who repelled an attack around 8pm on Wednesday, left the school.

In the wake of the abduction, parents and guardians thronged the college to pick their children and wards, blaming the incident on the poor security in the school.

Some parents of the abducted schoolchildren, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said the kidnappers called between 3pm and 5pm on Saturday.

A parent said, “They allowed me to speak with my son. I asked him if he was fine and he said yes. They asked me to meet with the school authorities to raise N400m for my child to be released.”

Another parent of one of the pupils said they begged the kidnappers that they had only menial jobs when they demanded the same amount.

“I said N400m was much, but one of them told me not to worry myself. He said I should meet with the school authorities and the government. I was also allowed to speak with my child. I spoke with two other parents and they said they were asked to pay N100m each,” the parent said.

When contacted on the telephone, the school Vice Principal, Academic, who did not disclose his name, said, “I’m sorry. I cannot volunteer information for you. I’m not permitted to speak to you. Thank you.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said the police had yet to be informed about the ransoms, adding that investigations were ongoing.

Meanwhile, a resident of Epe, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said security had also been beefed up around the college, following a clash between the security agents and the suspects.

He explained that the clash forced some residents of Ode village, a riverine community in Ogun State which shares border with Epe, to desert the area.
