INSECURITY! Seven bodies of abducted travellers recovered in Taraba forest –Police

The Taraba State Police Command has confirmed the discovery of seven travellers’ bodies amidst the dense foliage of a forest.

This revelation comes in the wake of an attack on an 18-seater bus, which was targeted in an ambush at Gamkwe village within the Donga Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday.

Loaded with passengers from Zaki- Biam in Benue State, the vehicle was en route to Maihula in the Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State when a group of assailants, believed to be vigilante members, launched an attack and struck the vehicle with deadly force.

Reports said the vigilante members had been mourning the death of their members when they sighted the bus, and attacked it in anger, claiming the passengers’ (Tivs) kinsmen were responsible for the death of the vigilante member.

After the attack, 15 of the passengers including women and children were declared missing by the police.

In a statement on Wednesday, the State Police Commissioner, CP David Iloyonomon, said his men found the seven dead bodies in the bush while on patrol to control rising tension between the Ichen and Tiv ethnic groups in the Donga Local Government Area of the State.

The commissioner said the seven recovered dead bodies included five women, a baby and a man.

The commissioner explained that the incident on Tuesday started when Ichen youths from Mararaba area of Donga LGA reported to the Police Area Command in the area that a Pastor and his church member were missing while on their way to the church.

According to Iloyonomon, the youth on the same day, found the decomposing bodies of the missing persons and started attacking the Tiv residents in the town.

“It took the efforts of our men to rescue some of the Tiv people to Takum for safety,” he said.

“Today, while our men were on patrol to maintain law and order and to ensure that peace returns, they found seven dead bodies including five women, a man, and a baby. The corpses have been evacuated to the police station,” he said.

  • Lawyer killed after delivering ransom to kidnappers in Kogi state

Lawyer killed after delivering ransom to kidnappers in Kogi state

Barr Eli Ugwu a senior lawyer based in Enugu has been shot dead.

Findings show that the legal practitioner was shot dead in Kogi State shortly after delivering ransom to kidnappers who abducted his cousin.

There are controversies surrounding the lawyer’s death.

Initial claims had said he was shot by the kidnappers after delivering the ransom.

A Facebook user, Senator Chijinkem Ugwuanyi wrote on his timeline: “A part of us is Gone! He was shot dead in Kogi state while trying to pay ransom for his kidnapped cousin.

“The story is not clear since yesterday but this is the much we know at the moment.”

Speculations also have it that the lawyer was shot dead by policemen as he was coming out of the bush, alongside his cousin upon his release by the kidnappers.

A senior lawyer, who does not want his name in print told journalists on Tuesday that Ugwu was shot dead by policemen after delivering ransom.

“He has already successfully delivered ransom and was coming out with the victim when policemen shot them.

“Eli was shot dead but his cousin (the kidnap victim), is responding to treatment. It’s a huge blow,” he said fearfully.

Eli, until his death, was a strong member of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Nsukka branch.

The Kogi State Police command is yet to issue any statement on the incident.

  • Kidnappers used poisonous snakes to terrorise us – Victims

Kidnappers used poisonous snakes to terrorise us – Victims

Abducted victims recently freed from captivity have revealed that kidnappers used poisonous snakes to terrorise them.

Some of them, who recounted their ordeals in separate interviews with NAN, said that there were many snakes in the forests inhabitated by the bandits.

They said that the snakes often bite both the kidnappers and the victims.

One of them, who craved anonymity, revealed kidnappers threw them into snake-infested spots.

“The kidnappers know the areas infested with snakes and would often throw the victims there.

“Immediately they see snakes, the fear-stricken victims will want to run away. The sight is used to frighten people.

“That is the time a victim can ask friends and family members to sell everything – house, land, cars, household items, shoes, just everything – to raise the ransom.”

Investigation revealed that the worst snake-infested forests are in Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State, and Kala-Balge, near Lake Chad, in Borno.

Other areas included Shaki in Oyo State, Borgu and Kagara in Niger, Karim Lamido in Adamawa, and Lau in Taraba.

Some of the victims said the situation is worse now with the current heat as snakes leave their holes in search of fresh air and food.

“The nights are often more traumatising. You are left outside, in the dark, and a reptile may just creep through your legs.

“While I was in captivity, snakes bit some victims. The kidnappers were not spared as some of them also got bitten,” a victim, who was taken to a thick forest in Kagara, in Niger, told NAN.

According to him, in Kagara forest, the snakes are so common that the locals refer to them as “kadangarun Kagara (Kagara lizards).”

Prof. Abdulsalam Nasidi, Chairman, Echitap Study Group, the outfit in charge of Echitap Anti-Snake Venom(ASV), who spoke on the development, confirmed that banditry was associated with areas prone to snake bites.

Nasidi, whose group collaborates with Micropharm UK Ltd and Instituto Clodomiro Picardo (ICP), Costa Rica, to bring the drugs to Nigeria, decried the rising cases of snake bites in Nigeria.

“Unfortunately for us, the cost of snake bite treatment has gone well beyond the reach of the poor,” he said.

While confirming that some abductees indeed returned with snakebite wounds, he said that the cost of treatment could only be affordable if the ASV drugs were produced locally.

“The ASV manufacturers are ready to collaborate with us to produce the ASV in Nigeria.

“It is only when we produce ASV locally in Nigeria that we can make it available at a reduced cost.

“The rise in the value of the dollar has made the cost of foreign production so high that the poor man who, in most cases, is the victim of snake bites, cannot afford it.

“In the past, villagers used to contribute money to purchase ASV, that is no longer possible.

“An ample of the Echitap G ASV, which takes care of venoms from a carpet viper, costs 59 Pounds factory price. 97 per cent of poisonous snake bite cases in Nigeria are from carpet vipers.

“For Echitap plus ICP ASV, which treats venom from puff adder, carpet viper and black cobra, an ample is 24 dollars factory price.

“If you add the cost of transportation from the two countries – UK and Costa Rica – plus the charges for clearance at the ports, the price becomes a different thing.”

He identified the most poisonous snakes in Nigeria as carpet viper, puff adder and black cobra.

“But, we even have an equally dangerous snake – Black Mamba – in Abuja. So, we also need an ASV for it,” he said.

According to him, in the past, Nigerians bitten by snakes had 40 per cent chances of survival.

“But, if the black mamba is added, the chances shrink to 10 per cent. It means we desperately need to produce ASV locally,” he said.

On kidnappers deliberately exposing their victims to snakes, he pointed out that snakes do not know the difference between a kidnapper and his victim.

He lamented the prevalence of snake bites among poor Nigerians that were already hungry.

“If a snake bites a hungry person, his case is only pathetic as he is already economically traumatised without much hope.”

He particularly condemned the inhuman behaviour of exposing abductees to snake bites, and regretted the “zero” premium placed on human life.

“From the accounts of victims, kidnapped people could see a snake coming toward them and are not allowed to run. Nothing is more traumatising.”

Nasidi said that his group had submitted a proposal to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for the local production of ASV.

“The proposal has been approved and we are waiting for the money to start up.

“The foreign manufacturers are ready to offer the technology. So, we are hopeful that we shall soon start local production of ASV,” he said.

Nasidi advised Nigerians to be careful while moving at night, noting that snakes were moving closer to human habitats.

“We must all be very watchful and observant. Treating snake bites is very expensive. So, prevention is better than any form of cure,” he said.

    …destroy dens

The Nigeria Police Force said on Saturday that it neutralised some notorious kidnappers and destroyed their camps in Mpape, Municipal Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

A statement by the Force spokesman, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, gave the name of the notorious kingpin neutralised as Musa Wada (Sabo) Magaji.

According to the statement, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Bureau – Intelligence Response Team (FIB-IRT), acting on intelligence at the early hours of February 9, 2024, around 2.40am, eliminated many notorious kidnappers including Magaji, who was the kingpin in an operation conducted around Mpape, Abuja.

The team, Adejobi said, equally destroyed the camps of the dreaded kidnappers who had been thorns in the flesh of Abuja residents in recent times.

According to the statement, the bandits engaged the police operatives in a gun battle that lasted for about 30 minutes, which left many of the bandits fatally injured, while one of the police operatives sustained bullet wounds.

The statement partly read: “This significant achievement follows closely on the heels of the neutralization of Abubakar Wada, an associate of Musa Wada, on February 8, 2024, who served as a lead to their hideout.

“Musa Wada, aka Sabo, was the mastermind behind numerous kidnappings for ransom activities plaguing areas including Mpape and Bwari in the FCT; Kagarko in Kaduna; Masaka, and Nukun Village in Nasarawa State. His modus operandi involved identifying wealthy targets and mobilising armed gangs to carry out abductions for ransom.

“The successful raid on their hideout, situated in the outskirts of Mpape Hills, was conducted by the brave men of the FIB-IRT through a surprise assault, resulting in the elimination of these notorious criminals.

“Additionally, items recovered from the hideout include mobile phones, multiple SIM cards, charms, and hard drugs, which are crucial pieces of evidence aiding ongoing investigations. Efforts are on to recover additional arms and ammunition and other equipment they use for their nefarious operations.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in its commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, and will continue to employ proactive measures to dismantle criminal networks and bring perpetrators of heinous crimes to justice, against all odds.”.

Large scale abductions: Wike holds emergency meeting in Abuja

Apparently disturbed by the large scale abductions in the capital city, the Federal Capital Territory FCT Minister, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has summoned an emergency security meeting in the wake of the increasing wave of kidnapping by bandits in Bwari Area Council and some other parts of the territory.

At the opening session, Wike assured residents that his administration and security agencies were not sleeping, urging them not to panic.

He said, “We are all aware of the security situation in the Federal Capital Territory, particularly Bwari and some other areas where we have witnessed security challenges.

“I am also aware that sometimes too, the press overblows what is happening, but indeed, we owe a duty to make sure that FCT is safe.

“We will do all we can, and we assure Nigerians who reside here that there is no need for panic. We are taking every step to make sure that those challenges are things that we must resolve.

“So, this meeting is practically to look into such challenges and see how we will be able to resolve the problems, and that is why we invited all the Council Chairmen because they also have a responsibility in their various area councils.

“We will put our heads together and come up with solutions. For the press, this is just for you to know that we are not sleeping, and security is also not sleeping. We will give every support that they require to take away the fears of the citizens or residents.”

Wike also warned council chairmen against unnecessary trips, saying they must remain in their councils and take responsibility for issues within their purview.

“This time around, we will not be happy, where Area Council Chairmen will leave their responsibilities and travel out. We have gotten reports that Council Chairmen travel anytime and then, if anything happens, they will not call anybody’s name except the FCT Minister.
