BREAKING: Boko Haram IED blast k!lls seven along Maiduguri-Damboa Road

No fewer than seven people were killed on Saturday following the detonation of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State.

The deadly incident occurred along the Maiduguri-Damboa Road, a notorious route that cuts through the Sambisa Forest—an area long plagued by insurgent activities.

The victims were part of a convoy of vehicles being escorted by the military from Damboa to Maiduguri.

According to eyewitness accounts and local sources, the explosion struck as the convoy—organized to provide safe passage through the volatile region—was underway. Several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to a hospital in Maiduguri for urgent treatment.

The Maiduguri-Damboa Road serves as a vital link between the state capital and several local government areas in southern Borno, including Chibok and Gwoza.

For years, the route remained closed to civilian traffic due to persistent terrorist threats. However, under the administration of Governor Babagana Zulum, the road was reopened, with military escorts deployed to accompany travelers twice weekly after clearing the area for explosives.

Saturday’s attack raises fresh concerns about the safety of the corridor, despite consistent military presence. The blast also comes just days after Governor Zulum publicly raised alarm over renewed Boko Haram activity in the state, highlighting the persistent threat the group poses to peace and development in the region.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident, while investigations and security operations in the area continue.

SAD! Newly recruited soldier stabs teacher in Taraba

A teacher with the Government Science Secondary school located in Donga local government area of Taraba state, has been stabbed by a newly recruited military officer.

The teacher who doubles as the exam officer of the institution, identified as Pavalis Yebduya Joshua, was stabbed for allegedly punishing the soldier’s brother for late coming.

Trouble started on Tuesday morning when the SSS 2 students were stopping latecomers. A newly recruited soldier identified as Barau Ishaq brought in a student (Ishaq Baraya) late for school on a motorcycle, and declined to drop him to be punished by the seniors for coming late.

The soldier claimed he brought the student and as such no senior student or staff should punish him

“As the teacher on duty, I interfered that the student should come back to be punished by me and this time I asked the young soldier if he was at the checkpoint and I refused to stop, will he be happy?” Joshua questioned.

“The soldier said this is different then I said I will punish the student now and I flogged the student four strokes then the young soldier came down from the motorcycle and said I disrespected him.

“I replied him that by age I was not his mate. And since I graduated from university, if I had joined the army through Direct Short Service like my friends who succeeded in the army, he wouldn’t have been here talking to me. He said I couldn’t join the army and I that he too could never attain my level of education.

“We exchanged words to the extent that I asked him to leave my duty post, which he angrily left and promised to come back with his colleagues.

“20 minutes later he came back with two of his friends – one a soldier and the other a civilian wearing army camouflage pretending to be a soldier. They came to the school, pulled out a jack-knife, and chased away students while looking for me. Immediately he saw me, he tried stabbing me but by God’s grace, I tried dodging the knife severally and finally held him together with the knife and the knife gave me cuts on my palm and fingers.

“Seeing that the students and my colleagues were trooping to the scene, the soldier escaped abandoning his two colleagues.

“My principal ran to the police station and reported the case, shortly after the police sent an officer who came and took me to the station together with the abandoned soldier.

“The DSS came and took their statement and I was taken to the hospital by the police officer for treatment. the culprit escaped to the Special Force camp in Akate Donga’s local government area and reported the incident.

“The soldier later returned with a team of special force in complete uniform with a gun scaring the students as they escaped into the bush and in the process two of the students got degrees of injuries while others are still missing.

“After the treatment in the hospital, as I came back to the police station, I met the young soldier there with a team of young special force recruits and right there, I said if not because of the knife he was holding he would not have done this to me.

“There and then live in the police station as witnessed by the police officers and crowd, he again removed the knife and said he would stab me again and nothing would happen even in the presence of the DCO. One of the young special forces threatened to face me personally after the case, the DCO and other two police officers are my witnesses. The special force promised to offset the hospital bill but did nothing up to this moment.”

The teacher is, however, appealing to the state government, the Police, the DSS, the Nigerian Army and all concerned to intervene for justice to be served.

At the moment, neither the Nigerian Army nor the state government has made any statement in defence or otherwise of the said incident.

  • SAD! Hurricane Beryl kills 7 as it turns towards Jamaica

SAD! Hurricane Beryl kills 7 as it turns towards Jamaica

Hurricane Beryl churned towards Jamaica Tuesday, with forecasters warning of potentially deadly winds and storm surge, after the storm killed at least seven people and caused widespread destruction across the southeastern Caribbean.

The powerful hurricane, which is rare so early in the Atlantic season, weakened Tuesday but was still an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 storm, and is expected to pass “near or over” Jamaica on Wednesday, meteorologists said.

Beryl is the first storm since US National Hurricane Center records began to reach the Category 4 level in June, and the earliest to reach Category 5 in July.

A hurricane warning was in place for the island nation, according to the NHC, which said rain and flash flooding was to be expected in addition to the life-threatening wind and high water levels.

Across Jamaica, emergency response preparations were underway, with shelters stocking up on provisions, people safeguarding their homes and boats being pulled from the water.

” I urge all Jamaicans to stock up on food, batteries, candles, and water. Secure your critical documents and remove any trees or items that could endanger your property,” Prime Minister Andrew Holness said on X.

Hurricane warnings were also issued in the Cayman Islands, which Beryl is “expected to pass near or over” on Wednesday night or early Thursday, according to the NHC.

In the Dominican Republic, massive waves were seen crashing into the shore along Santo Domingo as the storm passed to the country’s south, AFP photographers reported.

Beryl has already left a trail of death in its wake with at least three people killed in Grenada, where Beryl made landfall Monday, as well as one in St Vincent and the Grenadines and three in Venezuela, officials said.

Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said the island of Carriacou, which was struck by the eye of the storm, has been all but cut off, with houses, telecommunications and fuel facilities there flattened.

“We’ve had virtually no communication with Carriacou in the last 12 hours except briefly this morning by satellite phone,” Mitchell told a news conference.

The 13.5-square mile (35-square kilometer) island is home to around 9,000 people. At least two people there died, Mitchell said, with a third killed on the country’s main island of Grenada when a tree fell on a house.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines, one person on the island of Bequia was reported dead from the storm, and a man died in Venezuela’s northeastern coastal state of Sucre when he was swept away by a flooded river, officials there said.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concern about the region, saying on X that his organization “stands ready to support the national authorities with any health needs.”

    – ‘Alarming precedent’ –

Experts say it is extremely rare for such a powerful storm to form this early in the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from early June to late November.

Warm ocean temperatures are key for hurricanes, and North Atlantic waters are currently between two and five degrees Fahrenheit (1-3 degrees Celsius) warmer than normal, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said Beryl “sets an alarming precedent for what is expected to be a very active hurricane season.”

NOAA said in late May that it expects this year to be an “extraordinary” hurricane season, with up to seven storms of Category 3 or above.

    – Climate crisis ‘chief culprit’ –

UN climate chief Simon Stiell, who has family on the island of Carriacou, said climate change was “pushing disasters to record-breaking new levels of destruction.”

“Disasters on a scale that used to be the stuff of science fiction are becoming meteorological facts, and the climate crisis is the chief culprit,” he said Monday, reporting that his parents’ property was damaged.

As of 2300 GMT, Beryl had maximum sustained winds of 150 miles (240 kilometers) per hour as it headed towards Jamaica and the Cayman Islands on Tuesday, according to the NHC.

A hurricane watch and tropical storm warnings have also been issued for parts of Haiti.
