  • BREAKING: Gunmen invade another Anambra church, kill policeman

Gunmen on Sunday struck at the Assemblies of God Church on the Oguta road Onitsha, Anambra State killing one policeman and a civilian., PUNCH reports.

The church is located on Oguta road in Onitsha.

The attack comes exactly a week after a Catholic church was attacked in the Ozubulu area of the state.

According to Punch, an eyewitness was quoted as saying the policeman killed was one of the security detail deployed to the church.

“Gunmen on Okada (motorcycle) shot a policeman and collected his rifle. They also shot dead an Okada man while escaping, and the passenger he was carrying was injured,” a witness said.

“The policeman was the one armed among his colleagues, they were providing security while church service was going on at Assemblies of God Church, Oguta road Onitsha.”

Another witness said the police officers ran for safety when the exchange of fire became “too hot”.

“When the firing became too hot, the policemen abandoned their patrol vehicle and ran away for safety. The gunmen moved to their patrol van and took a gun belonging to the policeman they killed,” the second witness said

“I saw two of the gunmen but I can’t say how many they are in number.”

It is unclear why the gunmen struck, but Garba Umar, commissioner of police in Anambra, while confirming the incident, said: “It was not an attack on the church, in the real sense of it.”

“My men were on patrol near the church when they were attacked by some gunmen.”

  • Shekau has been killed – Defence spokesperson

Shekau has been killed – Defence spokesperson

Defence spokesperson, John Enenche says there is evidence that the Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, has been killed, but there are many ‘Shekaus’ in the group.

Speaking on The Osasu Show with Osasu Igbinedion, Enenche also said that the terrorist group has been defeated but total peace can never be achieved in the Northeast, just like any other part of the world.

“Boko Haram has been defeated, but defeat is a process to achieving total peace. Defeat is a package and it has started; so why can’t we say categorically and confidently that Boko Haram has been defeated? We can say that because before then, you will agree with me that you can’t move around the way people move around in the Northeast now.

“Insurgents and terrorists had total control over some local governments, they were already collecting taxes as government, but now it is no longer so. They have been defeated, there is a level of security in Nigeria, but does that mean there is no armed robbery in Nigeria? If you study sociology, criminality, crime and all these vices are part of human living.

“There is no total peace anywhere in the world, and it can never exist. It is normal, it is a usual abnormality that comes with human existence.”

On Shekau, he said, “It is rather unfortunate that people will believe liars and insurgents, criminals, who don’t have the love of this country at heart. How true is it that the person you are seeing is the leader of Boko Haram? Somebody that appears on a video? Who can verify it, where is the forensic proof?

“The evidence that we have that any Shekau that ever eliminated has been eliminated is as a result of our after action report. When you attack an area and there were individuals there from your intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance report, and now you take out that place and there’s nothing left, that is an evidence.

“Anything can be uploaded, there is no forensic evidence that can say this. There are many Shekaus, there are various Shekaus, which is my strong belief.

“A Shekau is still alive, people keep posing as Shekaus, but who knows the real Shekau? Only the indigenes and the people that are there, and people like carrying big names, that is why we keep knocking out any Shekau that comes up.”

  • Boko Haram kill 31 fishermen in Borno

At least 31 fishermen have been killed by Boko Haram jihadists in two separate attacks on islands in Lake Chad in northeastern Nigeria, fishermen and vigilantes fighting the Islamists told AFP late Monday.

Armed jihadists stormed the fishing islands of Duguri and Dabar Wanzam in the freshwater lake Saturday, attacking fishermen working in the area and shooting and hacking their victims.

“Boko Haram attacked Duguri and Dabar Wanzam islands and killed 31 people,” a member of a local militia fighting the jihadists in Maiduguri, Babakura Kolo told AFP.

“They (Boko Haram) killed 14 in Duguri and another 17 in Dabar Wanzam,” Kolo said.

The fishermen had returned to the fishing hub of Baga on the lake’s shores days earlier and had paddled out to the two islands in wooden canoes on Friday, looking for fish, said another militia Musa Ari, who gave similar account.
News of the attacks was slow to emerge with communication in the area difficult as Boko Haram has destroyed telecom masts in the region in attacks over the last few years.

The Boko Haram jihadists first attacked Duguri island where they killed 12 fishermen and injured two others who later died, said fisherman Sallau Inuwa.

“The attackers split into two groups. While the first attacked Duguri the second went to nearby Dabar Wanzam where they laid in wait for those who fled the attack in Duguri. They killed 17 in Dabar Wanzam,” Inuwa told AFP.

The attackers spared one fisherman in Duguri and loaded the 12 bodies of the men they killed in a canoe and ordered him to take them to Baga as a warning that no one should fish in the lake, said another fisherman Dauda Tukur.
“They told the man they spared to inform the troops in Baga that they were waiting for them on the islands,” he said.

The military and Nigerian officials have not yet commented on the attacks.
The attacks happened a week after military authorities lifted a two-year ban on fishing in the freshwater lake that straddles Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad.

Nigerian military banned fishing on the Nigerian side of the lake following accusations that Boko Haram was using proceeds from fishing to fund its armed campaign.

The ban left thousands of displaced residents impoverished, forcing them to rely on food handouts from government and aid agencies.

The lifting of the ban drew many fishermen back to the area.

Although the military reclaimed Baga from Boko Haram in February 2015 allowing some residents to move back, jihadists continued to launch sporadic attacks from their hideouts on several islands dotting the lake, where dense vegetation provides cover against military attacks.

In November 2014 Boko Haram killed 48 fishermen near Baga who were on their way to neighbouring Chad to buy fish, in one of the deadliest attacks against fishermen by the jihadists in the area.

  • Tragedy as Mother, two daughters killed, tucked in bed

A woman and her two daughters were found dead on Sunday night at their home in North Royalton, Ohio, and from the way their bodies were placed, it looked as though they were tucked into bed.

Police are referring to the deaths as a targeted attack.

The mother, 45-year-old Suzanne Taylor, had a fatal knife cut while the daughters had no obvious sign of death so it is still not clear what led to their death until the result of an autopsy is released. Suzanne’s body was found in bed by police. Beside her were 21-year-old Taylor Pifer and 18-year-old Kylie Pifer. All three bodies were tucked under the covers.

Forensic evidence has been collected from the scene and is currently being investigated. In addition, autopsies are also being conducted and there is hope that progress will be made.
