Murder of 35-year-old lady: Ebonyi community joins police to unmask killers

The Anike Community in Onicha Igboeze of Ebonyi has pledged to assist the police in their investigation to unmask the killers of 35-year-old lady native, Miss Nnenna Onu.

The Chairman of the community, Mr Phillip Nwankwo, made the pledge while reacting to the gruesome murder of the lady by yet-to-be identified assailants.

Speaking in an interview with NAN in Abakiliki on Sunday, Nwankwor described the incident as barbaric.

He called on the people of the community to join hands with the police and other relevant security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the crime from the community.

He said: “The act is purely an evil against our community and we condemn it in totality.

“On our side as a community, we have already made a pronouncement and incantations against the persons that have hand in the killing of our daughter.

“We believe and hope that our tradition will not allow them to go unpunished.

“I promise that I am ready to support the police in finding the killers.”

Meanwhile, the Ebonyi Police Command said it had commenced investigations into the incident, which happened on Dec. 23, 2021.

The command’s Spokesperson, DSP Loveth Odah, said the police investigating team had visited the scene but no arrest had so far been made.

“The police have commenced clinical investigation into the matter.

“What delayed the investigation and arrest before now was that the family failed to make official report to the command when the incident happened.

“Well, the family told us that the failure to report the matter on time was due to the threats to them by their relatives should they report to the police.

“Right now, we are on top of the matter and the Police Commissioner, Mr Aliyu Garba, has pledged to get to its root.

“We have visited the scene and we will continue to follow up until the perpetrators are brought to book,” Odah said.

Recall that Nnenna, a graduate of Public Administration, Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, was murdered in her Amagu Village, Ndiagu-Anike, Onicha Igboeze, Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi.

Her assailants severed her left leg from her body before setting her and her belongings ablaze behind her late father’s house.
    She reportedly burned beyond recognition.

Also in an interview, the deceased younger sister, Mrs Juliet Onu, appealed to Gov. Dave Umahi and all the security agencies in the state to help her family to apprehend Nnenna’s killers and bring them to justice.

Narrating the circumstances surrounding Nnenna’s death, Juliet feared that she could have been murdered over her efforts to recover their family inheritance after their father’s death.

Juliet alleged that their inheritance was taken away after the death of their father many years ago, followed by the “mysterious death” of all their male siblings.

“After the death of our father and brothers, Nnenna and I have been struggling to survive with our poor mother.

“When I got married, I left, leaving Nnenna alone with our mother.

“Today, my mother cannot go to farm because she has been deprived from ownership of any property after our father’s death.

“Now, she cannot go to the village because they do not want her alive.

“She has been living with me and my husband in Abakaliki, the state capital.

“We were expecting her to visit us during the Christmas celebration but we did not see her.

“On Christmas day, my husband travelled to the village to check on her only to find out that she had been murdered.

“We want justice for our family, especially my mother, who is a widow.

“We also call on religious leaders, civil society organisations and well-meaning individuals for assistance,” Juliet said.

Olajide, a student of Pharmacy at the Igbinedion University Okada, was killed by kidnappers on Saturday in the Okada area of Edo State.

  • Nigerian leaders heartless; we know our killers but they won’t declare them terrorists – Kukah

Nigerian leaders heartless; we know our killers but they won’t declare them terrorists – Kukah

Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, has described Nigerian leaders as heartless for allegedly watching bandits and terrorists turn the country into a killing field.

In his homily during the burial of Fr. Alphosus Bello at Our Lady of Apostles Catholic Church, Kaduna, yesterday, he slammed President Muhammadu Buhari administration for failing to address the country’s security challenges.

Kukah said: “Those who govern us are allowing this killing of citizens because they have no blood in their hearts.”

Bello was kidnapped, alongside Fr. Joseph Keke, and murdered in Katsina by bandits on May 21, 2021.

“There is nowhere in the whole world that citizens can be slaughtered without the government showing empathy and concern. The continuous barbaric slaughter of our people in their innocence suggests that our beautiful Presidential Villa, National Assembly and government houses are not moving with civilisation.

“How did Nigeria come to this tragic situation? We know who they are, whom they believe in and where their inspiration comes from. But the government has never declared the kidnappers a terrorist group,” he added.

According to Kukah, there is no ambiguity about the killers. “We hear and live with stories of complicity at the highest level. Christians can only rely on the faithful word of God.”

The cleric wondered how leaders, who swore with the Qur’an and Bible to uphold the principle of governance, would leave the country at the mercy of criminals.

He urged them to reverse the vow to: “I have sworn that I will not protect you from foreign invaders, kidnappers and being killed. You are on your own. Your security is in your own hands. Keeping you safe is not our immediate priority. Foreign bandits or anyone can come at will, kill, loot, rape, kidnap and murder you. They can wipe out your communities, destroy your homes and your farmlands.

“They can kidnap or murder your children at will. They can rustle your cattle. If they kidnap your children, wives or husbands, we will consider you criminals for negotiating for their release. We are preparing a law that could see you go to jail for 15 years for this heinous crime against your fatherland.”

Kukah, therefore, urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in prayer, saying that “God will lead us out of this tragic situation.”

  • How ongoing membership registration, revalidation exercise is opening doors for killers, criminals to join APC – Aregbesola

How ongoing membership registration, revalidation exercise is opening doors for killers, criminals to join APC – Aregbesola

Minister for Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, lamented the membership registration and revalidation exercise of All Progressives Congress (APC) has made murderers and rascals join the party.

Aregbesola, while addressing his supporters in Ilesha, Osun State after he revalidated his membership in APC at Ward 8 in Ifofin, in Ilesa East Local Government with his wife, said the influx of leaders, members of the opposition PDP and other political parties to the APC has allowed those with questionable and unedifying past to cross into the progressive, people-centred party.

The immediate past Osun Governor claimed the APC constitution has no power to reject such individuals since no court has pronounced them as murderers.

He refused to mention names but charged APC members they have a moral duty to ensure such elements do not occupy leadership positions and derail the party.

According to him: “We are doing this registration and revalidation exercise so that it will be easy for us to choose those that will lead and be the candidate of our party.

“No room for a lopsided candidate again in APC. We have registered killer and murderer in our party.

“Our party’s law cannot reject a killer when the court has not pronounced such a person as a killer. But we know killer, thief and rascal in our midst.

“When the time comes we will boycott such person. We can’t allow anybody to take advantage of Bola Ige’s death as a means to take a leadership position. Anyone that attempted it shall never be great. Bola Ige is our father!

“Anybody who disrespects and despise Bola Ige is my enemy. Anytime that we want to choose a candidate here, we will consider name, character, act and those who you moved with before we choose our leader.

“Chief Bola Ige was our leader and stood all his life for a compassionate government, commitment to the good of the majority and ideas that would bring the good life, happiness, progress and security to the people.”
