33 suspects nabbed in Makurdi in connection with Benue killings

The Benue State Government has confirmed the arrest of 33 individuals from Northern Nigeria who arrived in Makurdi aboard two buses and attempted to settle in a private residence located in Gyado Villa.

Their unexpected arrival raised alarm among community members, leading to swift reports by concerned residents and youth leaders—including an urgent alert to the government through Barns Dzege and staff of Villa Suites.

Acting promptly, a joint team comprising the Benue State Commissioners for Works and Housing and Humanitarian Affairs, the Chairman of Makurdi Local Government, the ALGON Chairman, and security personnel moved to the scene for verification and to take control of the situation.

Commenting on the incident, Asortar James Asortar, Special Assistant to the Governor on Social Media, confirmed that the 33 individuals were brought into the state by a company registered only recently, on May 8, and were allegedly employees of a so-called NGO.

“Upon their arrival at Villa Suites, it was revealed that all 33 persons had been transported that same day from various northern states,” James explained.

Preliminary questioning showed that the majority of the individuals could not communicate in English, and their reasons for attempting to settle in a private residence within the community remain uncertain. Security personnel have since taken them into custody for further interrogation to uncover the true intent of their presence in Benue.

He also acknowledged the alertness of the Gyado Villa youths and Villa Suites staff, noting that their swift action helped avert a potential security threat.

In response, the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, commended the community for their prompt action.

“We are grateful to the youths of Gyado Villa and the Villa Suites staff for raising the alarm swiftly. Your vigilance is sincerely appreciated. This event highlights the critical need for continued alertness and the prompt reporting of any suspicious activity,” Governor Alia stated.

  • Enugu community accuses soldiers of allegedly killing 2, army says it is untrue

Enugu community accuses soldiers of allegedly killing 2, army says it is untrue

The people of Eke Community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State have alleged the killing of a volunteer member of its neighborhood vigilante watch and a housewife from the community by soldiers.

Narrating what transpired on Sunday, Mr Emeka Anigbo, Assistant Chief Security Officer of Eke Security Neighbourhood Vigilante Watch, who is still grieving over gunshot pain, said they were at 9th Mile Corner on Thursday night when they got a distress call.

Anigbo said that the caller said that armed robbers blocked the major road leading to the popular Catholic Church Prayer Center (Ugwudinso) and Eke, from Ama Breweries.

According to him, “on receiving the distress call, we swiftly drove out with a view to confronting the criminal elements, but due to heavy traffic gridlock occasioned by the blockage of the road, they could not get to the scene with their vehicle.

He said they (vigilante group) decided to park their vehicle along the road, and started moving towards the place, and that while approaching the scene, they met three armed soldiers who ordered them to stop.

“We obeyed the soldiers and identified ourselves as neighborhood vigilante watch guards. The soldiers asked us to keep coming.

“On approaching, the soldiers started firing at us, killing one of us and a woman who was on a motorcycle with her husband going back to Eke community.

“Despite the fact that we were in our full security uniforms and had identified ourselves, the trigger-happy soldiers opened fire on us at a very close range, killing Oke, and the woman.

“After shooting me severally, while I was on the ground, one of the soldiers still, notwithstanding seeing my identification card and my uniform, went ahead to shoot me again on the shoulder,” Anigbo said.

Anigbo said that it was the timely arrival of police operatives from 9th Mile Corner Division that saved his life, adding it was the police that stopped the soldier and confirmed that we are Eke Neighborhood Security Guards.

He alleged that the soldiers equally shot three other members of the local security outfit at close range, leaving them with various degrees of bullet injuries, including one whose penis was completely shattered.

“It is unfortunate that Mr Ebuka Oke, shot during the barbaric attack by the soldiers, lost his father exactly one month on the same day he was killed,” he said.

Efforts to speak with Chinedu Okolo, whose manhood was shattered, failed, as he could not utter a word due to severe pains, just as the third victim, Obinna Offor, was passing excruciating pains under oxygen support at the intensive care unit of a hospital.

Some natives of Eke community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, condemned the unprofessional conducts of the soldiers, describing it as “barbaric and callous”, while calling for independent investigation.

When contacted, Lt.- Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division of Nigerian Army, described as untrue the narrative of the community people and its vigilante arm.

Unuakhalu said that from the available information in the Division’s disposal, the deceased woman was killed by a stray bullet from armed hoodlums who engaged the soldiers in a shoot-out.

He said that the troops received a distress call that some criminal elements were operating along the Eke road, and they immediately rushed to the scene, on sighting the soldiers the hoodlums opened fire on them.

He noted that the soldiers overpowered them leading to the arrest of one of them, and recovering of two pump action guns and some live bullets, after some ran into a nearby bush.

The Division’s spokesman said he had no information regarding the alleged second deceased (the male).

He added that it was in the course of the exchange of fire between the troop and the hoodlums that a stray bullet hit the deceased house wife who was rushed to the hospital, “but unfortunately, later died”.

“So, there is no iota of truth in the information being peddled around that it was soldiers that killed the deceased (female). Our men only rushed to the scene to salvage the situation, after receiving a distress call,” he insisted.

He noted that it was unfortunate that the woman died, if not, she would have been in the best position to narrate exactly what happened.

“The Division is going to carry out proper investigation on the incident, so as to unravel what actually transpired,” he said.

Eke community is the hometown of the Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr Osita Okechukwu and immediate past Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, among others.

  • Idoma editors bemoan Benue killings, suggest way out

Idoma editors bemoan Benue killings, suggest way out

A media professionals group, The Idoma Editors, has thumbed down what it described as the “nauseatingly historical killings in Benue communities by suspected terrorists also known as killer herders.”

According to them, the killings of innocent indigenes had “assumed a monumental proportion during the just concluded Easter celebration with Umogidi village, Guma and Agan IDPs Camps repeatedly attacked leaving scores dead.

This was contained in a press statement issued Friday in Abuja by the acting president of the group, Adoyi M. Aba.

The statement read in part, “We have undertaken a thorough evaluation of this sustained violence against the peace-loving people of Benue state and wish to unequivocally condemn the brazen ex-communication of lives by these suspected terrorists who masquerade as herders.

“We’re particularly distrustful of the spread of these attacks to more communities in Benue South as the area is historically known to be peaceful, friendly and an excellent host haven for other Nigerians. We’re even taken aback by these well-orchestrated attacks that led to the death of no fewer than 50 and injuries to many others in Umogidi village at Adoka District of Otukpo local government area of the state.

“We also denounce the unprovoked attacks on innocent displaced people in the IDPs camps in both Guma and Agan communities in Makurdi. These dastardly acts of killing defenceless and vulnerable people, including women and children, in the IDPs camps can only be carried out by blood-thirsty demons masquerading as humans.”

According to the group, even though the governorship election has already produced a governor-elect, “we wish to advise the incumbent governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom, not to adjudicate his constitutional function of ensuring the safety of lives and property in the state until his last day in office.”

“We are not unaware of the enormous security challenge that has limited the progress and development of the state in the last eight years, but that should not stop the government from functioning optimally.

“We, however, thank Governor Ortom for his several efforts made to abate human carnage, even as we hope that the in-coming governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iornem Alia, won’t waste time in re-setting the security architecture to insulate the state from further external aggression.

“We also called on the federal government to approve a special military exercise for the state where all suspected forests, mountains and other hidden zones in and around the state could be flushed.

“It is surprising that Benue, blessed with a plethora of military formations, remains unsafe for habitation.”
