British king sends ‘special relationship’ message to Trump

Britain’s King Charles has sent a personal message of congratulations to Donald Trump on his inauguration, reflecting on the enduring special relationship between the UK and U.S., Buckingham Palace said.

Charles’s private written words were delivered to mark Trump being sworn into office as U.S. president for a second time.

It is understood all options remain possible for an incoming state visit by Trump to the UK and a visit by Charles to the U.S., but no plans are currently in the diary.

Foreign monarchs, presidents or prime ministers are invited to visit the King on the advice and request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, with the decision down to the Government.

Trump is well known for his love of the monarchy and the royal family plays a central role in the UK’s bond with the U.S.

The U.S. leader boasted he had “automatic chemistry” with the late Queen, and has hailed the King as a “really wonderful guy”.

When Trump met the Prince of Wales in Paris last month after the ceremonial reopening of the Notre Dame cathedral, he remarked of William that he was “very handsome” and “some people look better in person”.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to hold talks with Trump in Washington within weeks as the “special relationship” faces strain, with high-profile Labour figures having expressed critical opinions about Trump in the past.

Trump is weighing up whether to approve the appointment of Lord Mandelson as the UK’s new ambassador in Washington, the fate of the Chagos Islands deal and the extent to which tariffs will hit Britain.

He was already feted with a grand state visit to the UK, hosted by the queen in 2019.

Precedent for second-term US presidents who have already made a state visit is usually tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle, as was the case for George W Bush and Barack Obama.

But nothing should be ruled out when it comes to Trump, who is first ever U.S. president to be a convicted felon in the wake of his New York hush money trial.

His election victory marked an extraordinary comeback in a political career which has been marred in controversy, criminal charges, accusations of racism and sexism, and the US Capitol riots in January 2021.

The last outward state visit to the U.S. by a British monarch was 17 years ago when Elizabeth II was hosted by George W Bush in 2007.

The king and queen could be invited to the U.S. by Trump.

Palace officials indicated that after Charles and Camilla’s recent Australia tour that the king will return to regular overseas trips this year as he adapts to living with cancer.

King Charles appoints William to lead Harry’s old regiment

Britain’s King Charles III officially handed over the role of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps to Prince William on Monday, in a rare joint engagement with his elder son and heir.

The head of state joined William at the Army Aviation Centre in Middle Wallop, southern England, appointing him colonel-in-chief of his younger son Prince Harry’s old regiment.

The 75-year-old monarch’s decision to hand the role, which he held for 32 years, to William, 41, was seen as a snub to Harry when it was announced last year.

Harry, 39, is a former army captain and served as an Apache helicopter pilot with the Army Air Corps in Afghanistan.

But he has become estranged from his father and brother since leaving the royal family in early 2020 and moving to the United States with his American wife, Meghan.

The king, who announced he had cancer in February and is receiving treatment, said the event was bittersweet, as it was a “great joy” to attend but sad to hand over the baton after 32 years.

“I do hope you’ll go from strength to strength in the future with the Prince of Wales as your new colonel-in-chief,” he told the regiment in a speech.

“The great thing is he’s a very good pilot indeed. So that’s encouraging,” said the king.

William worked as a Royal Air Force search and rescue pilot and also flew for a civilian air ambulance unit before taking up full-time royal duties

His appointment came just days after Harry visited London but did not meet his father due to what he said was the king’s “full programme”.

The lack of meeting — even for a short time — was interpreted as a blow to Harry, who then flew on to Nigeria and a three-day tour with Meghan.

The Duke of Sussex, as Harry is also known, did not meet William either, who was scheduled for a visit to Cornwall in southwest England.

Harry’s relationship with his father has been strained by his revelations and criticisms of royal life aired in a television interview, a Netflix documentary and his autobiography “Spare”.

A possible end to four years of rancour and score settling was previously seen as on the cards in February, when Harry jetted in from California to briefly see his father.

The king has recently resumed public engagements after doctors said they were “very encouraged” by the progress of his treatment.

King Charles III to resume public duties after cancer treatment

Britain’s King Charles III is to return public royal duties after the positive effect of his cancer treatment.

Charles has been receiving care as an outpatient since early February and the announcement will be a boost for the monarchy as it comes to terms with king and the Princess Kate of Wales as cancer patients.

Sources stressed that in spite of the welcome news; the king still has cancer and will continue to be treated for the undisclosed form of the disease.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson on Friday said that “his majesty’s medical team are very encouraged by the progress made so far and remain positive about the king’s continued recovery.”

It has been widely reported that the king was keen to resume some form of public duties, in spite of his illness, after the announcement of his cancer diagnosis on February 6.

To mark the development, Buckingham Palace said Charles and Queen Camilla will visit a cancer treatment Centre on Tuesday to meet medical specialists and patients.

The royal event aims to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis and highlight innovative research, supported by Cancer Research UK, taking place at the hospital.

The Palace spokesperson said: “His majesty’s treatment programme will continue, but doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that the king is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties.

“Forthcoming engagements will be adapted where necessary to minimize any risks to his majesty’s continued recovery.”

Charles’s diary of events will not be a full summer programme, and attendance will be announced close to the time and “subject to doctors’ advice,” with “adaptations made where necessary to minimize risk” to the king’s recovery.

It is understood the warmer weather would allow events to be staged outside and minimize the risk posed by other people that many cancer patients face.

The spokesperson added: “The pacing of the king’s programme will be carefully calibrated as his recovery continues, in close consultation with his medical team.”

A picture marking the first anniversary of the crowning of the king and queen on May 6 has been released, taken the day after their 19th wedding anniversary on April 10.

Charles and Camilla are shown smiling broadly and walking arm in arm along a path with shrubs and colourful flowers in the background.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “His majesty the king will shortly return to public-facing duties after a period of treatment and recuperation following his recent cancer diagnosis.

“To help mark this milestone, the King and Queen will make a joint visit to a cancer treatment centre next Tuesday, where they will meet medical specialists and patients.

“This visit will be the first in a number of external engagements his majesty will undertake in the weeks ahead. In addition, the king and queen will host their majesties the emperor and empress of Japan for a state visit in June, at the request of [his majesty’s] government.

“As the first anniversary of the coronation approaches, their majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year.”

King Charles to attend Easter Sunday church service

Britain’s head of state King Charles III has been billed to attend Easter Sunday church service, Buckingham Palace announced Tuesday, in his most high-profile engagement few weeks after revealing a cancer diagnosis.

King Charles and  wife, Queen Camilla, will attend the Easter Mattins Service at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle — a long-standing annual tradition of Britain’s royal family.

The announcement comes after the 75-year-old king’s daughter-in-law Catherine, Princess of Wales last week said that she was also receiving treatment for cancer.

That leaves the monarchy in an unprecedented crisis in modern times with two of its most senior members simultaneously fighting serious illness.

Catherine, 42, is married to Charles’s eldest son and heir, Prince William, making her a future queen.

Charles was just 17 months into his reign when the palace announced in early February that he had cancer and would be pausing all public-facing engagements as he commenced treatment.

He had been admitted for surgery for a benign prostate condition in January but was subsequently diagnosed with an unrelated cancer.

The type of cancer has not been disclosed.

He has been continuing with behind-the-scenes work and holding some in-person meetings and increasingly attending official events.

King Charles returns to London for further treatment

British King Charles returns to London for what is widely expected to be hospitalized for further treatment following his cancer diagnosis.

Charles and Queen Camilla flew by helicopter to Buckingham Palace from their private Sandringham home on Tuesday, and were driven the short distance to nearby Clarence House.

It was announced last week that the head of state has a “form of cancer” and at the weekend he issued a statement praising “all those organisations which support cancer patients”.

Charles had postponed all public-facing duties, but is continuing with behind-the-scenes work on his red boxes of state papers.

The Queen has been carrying out her royal diary of engagements and last week said her husband was doing “extremely well under the circumstances”.

She said the King, who underwent his first bout of cancer treatment last week, had been “very touched” by all the messages of support he has received from the public.

The King and Queen arrived as downpours swept across London and Charles was photographed waving to well-wishers.

Charles’s diagnosis followed three nights in a private London hospital where he was treated for an enlarged prostate.

The Prince of Wales may step in to represent his father at events and it has been reported William and his family are spending half-term at their Norfolk home Anmer Hall, which is on the King’s Sandringham estate.

During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted.

Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.

Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure.

He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.

British monarch, King Charles III to be treated for enlarged prostate

British head of state King Charles III will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure to treat an enlarged prostate, Buckingham Palace said Wednesday.

In common with thousands of men each year, The King has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate,” said a palace statement.

“His Majesty’s condition is benign and he will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure,” it added.

The 75 year-old monarch’s public engagements will be postponed for “a short period of recuperation,” said the palace.
Charles became king upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022.

He is the oldest person to become Britain’s monarch, having been the longest-serving heir apparent.

The king, whose mother died aged 96 and father died aged 99, has generally enjoyed good health, although has twice been struck down by coronavirus and suffered sporting injuries when he was younger.

Benign prostate enlargement is common in men aged over 50, is not related to cancer and is “not usually a serious threat to health”, according to Britain’s National Health Service.

  • Russian hackers ‘crash Royal Family website’ days after King Charles condemned invasion of Ukraine

Russian hackers ‘crash Royal Family website’ days after King Charles condemned invasion of Ukraine

Russian hackers claimed responsibility for taking down the Royal Family’s official website in a targeted cyber attack just days after King Charles condemned the invasion of Ukraine.

Hacker KillMilk, the purported leader of the pro-Putin hacktivist group KillNet, said in a Telegram post that they had attacked the Royal Family’s official website on Sunday.

It was reported that the Royal Family’s website, royal.uk, was taken down for around 90 minutes, displaying an error message from around 10.20 on Sunday morning, October 1.

A royal source said hackers had ‘not gained access to the Royal Family’s website’. ‘The website went down due to a Denial of Service attack for around an hour and a half. There was no access to our systems or content,’ they said.

The cyber attack came just two weeks after King Charles’s condemnation of Russia’s ‘unprovoked aggression’ was met with a standing ovation in Paris, as he declared ‘Ukraine must prevail’.

It is understood that an investigation into the cyber attack is underway.

KillMilk regularly posts on messaging site Telegram in support of the Russian state, and cyber security experts believe this group could have links with figures at the top of Putin’s regime.

The group claimed that the takedown was an ‘attack on paedophiles’. It also posted a picture of King Charles with the words ‘they killed our website’ next to it.

This isn’t the first time KillNet has gone after the Royal Family, as in November 2022 the website was taken down for several hours by a DDoS attack.

The Royal Family are vocal supporters of Ukraine, with the King hosting President Zelensky for talks at Buckingham Palace back in February.

Prince William, who has himself served in the military, also visited Ukraine’s border with Poland this year to thank troops personally.

His wife, Catherine Princess of Wales paid homage to the Ukrainian people with her performance at Eurovision and the royals have housed refugees who have fled due to the war.

KillNet is a pro-Russia group that is known for its attacks against government institutions and private companies across the world.

  • Tony Elumelu meets King Charles, President Biden as world leaders convene for climate finance forum

Tony Elumelu meets King Charles, President Biden as world leaders convene for climate finance forum

Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Tony Elumelu on Monday joined King Charles III and U.S. President Joe Biden at the Climate Finance Mobilisation Forum in London to help attract a new generation of capital to combat climate change.

Achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement requires unlocking private investment at unprecedented speed and scale, Elumelu said.

Mr. Elumelu is one of Africa’s most prominent advocates for equitable climate finance and is a leading funder of young African entrepreneurs – through the Tony Elumelu Foundation – working to create sustainable climate solutions.

“Africa needs a just, fair, equal and a realistic strategy to address the inequalities that exist between Africa and the rest of the world,” Elumelu said.

Africa has a significant energy deficit and must prioritize the provision of a mix of both traditional and renewable energy. Emerging economies, particularly in Africa, will require an additional $1 trillion of investment per annum by 2030 to support a fair transition. To mobilise this scale of capital, the world needs bold actions and innovative new partnerships between public, private, and philanthropic actors.

Recent trends show a decrease in renewable energy investment to emerging and developing economies. Africa’s green revolution requires urgent, immediate and significant funding – funding that is larger than the resources available to African governments, and private sector. As Elumelu repeatedly champions, Africa has contributed the least to today’s climate crisis, but continues to suffer an outsized impact of climate change.

Elumelu, who will be representing the African private sector, was invited to the forum by Grant Sharps, UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, and John Kerry, the US Special Presidential Envoy on Climate. The invitation came at the request of King Charles III and US President Joe Biden.

“A Net Zero conversation that ignores, dismisses, or underestimates the continent’s current reality does us all more harm than good,” Elumelu said. “Climate finance investment should deploy capital to a mix of on and off-grid solutions that are required to deliver affordable, reliable, and accessible power in Africa.”

According to Elumelu, “Africans bear the harshest effects of the climate crisis and are the least responsible for creating this crisis in the first place.”

This meeting follows the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact, which Elumelu participated in Paris, hosted by H.E. Emmanuel Macron, the President of France.

The Summit laid the groundwork for a new financial system suited to the challenges of the 21st century: a system that will boost investments in green infrastructure and create innovative solutions to climate vulnerability.

  • Coronation: Nigeria’s President-elect writes King Charles III

Coronation: Nigeria’s President-elect writes King Charles III

Nigeria’s President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has penned a congratulatory message to King Charles III on the occasion of his coronation as King of England.

In his congratulatory letter addressed to the newly crowned king, Tinubu disclosed he looks forward to further engagements with the British government.

The President-elect noted that the splendour of British monarchy and its rich tradition came to the fore again and the world literally came to a standstill as King Charles III was crowned.

“By way of this letter, therefore, I convey to you my warmest congratulations on your coronation,” Tinubu wrote.

He said it was heartwarming that Charles’s accession to the throne came after the 70-year reign of his iconic mother: Queen Elizabeth II, whose death in September 2022 left the entire world in grief, given her eventful reign.

“Bearing your unique place in history as the first King to be inaugurated in Britain since 1937, I trust that you will follow in the glorious footsteps of your late mother and even surpass her achievements in United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

“Particularly remarkable about you is your love for the environment, importantly your life long crusade for sustainability and biodiversity,” Tinubu stated.

He expressed hope that the crowned King would continue to push for these initiatives with kind eyes on the situation and plight of the under-privileged people in Africa and around the world.

He also expressed hope that during his reign, the excellent bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Britain would continue and even become stronger in the interests of the two countries.

“I look forward to further engagements with you and the opportunity of a meeting in the nearest future as both of us had earlier indicated in discussions with mutual friends and associates.

“Once again, I rejoice with you on your coronation and pray that God Almighty grant you strength and wisdom.

“And make your reign successful for the benefit of not only the people of the Great Britain, but for the entire world.

“Please rest assured of my highest regards always,” the Nigerian President-elect said.
