The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a wanted 60-year-old drug kingpin, ending seven years of evading the law.

This is contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Mr Femi Babafemi.

Babafemi said that the suspect was caught while attempting to transport large quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine to the South East Zone and other parts of the country.

He said that the suspect, who had been on the wanted list of NDLEA since 2019, was eventually nabbed at his hideout in Isheri area of Lagos on July 13.

This, he said, followed the interception of some of his consignments at 5:45 am on the same day at Ilasamaja on the Apapa-Oshodi expressway.

Babafemi said a team of NDLEA officers, acting on credible intelligence, had arrested one of the kingpin’s couriers.

He said the courier was heading to Onitsha, Anambra, in a white Toyota Sienna vehicle.

Babafemi said the agency’s sniffer dogs were subsequently brought in to search the vehicle.

According to him, 7.6 kg of cocaine and 900 grams of methamphetamine were found hidden in body compartments of the vehicle.

He said a follow up operation was promptly carried out at the kingpin’s hideout in Isheri.

Additional 1.8kg of cocaine and 1.3kg of methamphetamine, he said, were recovered from his residence.

Babafemi also said that NDLEA operatives in a joint operation with Aviation Security personnel of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria recovered 7,790 pills of tramadol and rohypnol.

Babafemi said the drugs, which were in the luggage of an Italy-bound passenger, were intercepted at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Wednesday.

He said that the suspect, who was going to Italy via Istanbul on a Turkish Airlines flight, claimed he purchased the drugs himself, hoping to sell them in that country at higher prices.

In another arrest at the Lagos airport, Babafemi said NDLEA operatives at the export shed on Thursday intercepted 17 parcels of skunk, a strain of cannabis.

Babafemi said that the drugs, which weighed 1.70kg, were concealed in packs of a popular cereal going to Pakistan as part of a consolidated cargo.

According to him, a suspect was arrested in connection with the incident.

In another development, Babafemi said 45,000 pills of tramadol were seized from a 30-year-old suspect on the Onitsha-Enugu expressway on Wednesday.

Babafemi added that officers of the Taraba command on the same day apprehended two suspects with illicit drugs.

Wahab, subsequently, directed a senior officer in charge to make contact with parents of concerned children and the Ministry of Youths and Social Development for rehabilitation of children displaced from under bridges as approved by Mr. Governor.

The commissioner said the Environment Ministry and relevant counterpart ministry will collaborate on how to take care of some of the children of school age who lived under the bridge.

  • NAF neutralised two terror commanders, 100 others in Borno

NAF neutralised two terror commanders, 100 others in Borno

The Nigerian Air Force has said two terrorist kingpins were neutralised during air raids carried out by the air component of Operation Hadin Kai at the Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Air Force gave the names of the terrorist kingpins as Khaids Tukur and Bakura Jega, adding that over a hundred terrorists were also wasted during the air raid.

In a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet said the air raid was conducted after it was discovered that the commanders had placed their foot soldiers at strategic positions in the area.

The statement was titled, ‘Terrorists kingpins Khaids Abba Tukur, Bakura Jega, others confirmed neutralised in Air strikes as COAS and CAS fete troops in Maiduguri’.

It partly read, “Following an airstrike conducted by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai on 20 December 2022 at Mantari in Gezuwa area of Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, it has now been confirmed that several terrorists including Khaids Abbah Tukur, Maimusari, Bakura Jega, and several others were eliminated in the strike.

“The information was received just as the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao arrived Maiduguri earlier today, 25 December 2022 to celebrate the yuletide with frontline troops.

“The air strike was authorised after it was discovered that a Boko Haram terrorist commander simply known as Ikirima, had stationed his fighters and gun trucks at Mantari village, alongside other terrorists from other locations who had converged at the same location arrived with motorcycles and bicycles.

“Subsequently, the authorisation for an air strike was given leading to the elimination of several of the terrorists and structures in the area.

“After the first wave of air strikes, some surviving terrorists found their way back to the same location to evacuate the bodies of those neutralised in the air strike.

“This thus provided an opportunity for a follow-up strike on the same location which has been confirmed very successful as over 100 terrorists were neutralised with dozens said to be in critical condition.

“There were also confirmed reports that ISWAP and Boko Haram elements had perfected plans to resume active hostilities in the wake of the yuletide and forthcoming general elections.

“The timely intelligence received on their plans especially their attempt to attack soft targets in Bama LGA thus helped in the successful air strikes which reduced their will to regroup and attack innocent citizens.

“There is no doubt that the progress and gains being made especially by the air and ground troops have greatly contained an upsurge of terrorists campaigns within the Northeast zone in recent times.

“Both air and ground troops have, however, been cautioned on the need to remain focused on the end state.”
