Kogi bans daytime movement of heavy-duty vehicles

The Kogi Government has banned the daytime movement of heavy-duty vehicles due to the high rate of accidents.

Dr Yusuf Suberu, the Senior Special Assistant to the Kogi Governor on Road Safety Matters announced the ban  in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

Suberu confirmed that the directive followed extensive consultations with transport stakeholders, law enforcement agencies, and road safety experts.

He said that the move was to address the alarming frequency of road crashes involving articulated vehicles in the state.

“According to the new regulation, these categories of vehicles are now permitted to operate only between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. within the state.

“The decision comes on the heels of a recent tragic road crash involving multiple heavy-duty vehicles, which claimed several lives and left many others with life-threatening injuries.

“This regulation is a necessary response to the devastating incidents we have witnessed. It is a strategic measure to reduce road crashes and save lives. The safety of Kogi citizens is paramount,” he said.

Suberu said that Kogi, positioned as a central transit corridor for north-south bound vehicular movement, sees high volumes of traffic daily.

This, he said was particularly from long-distance trailers and tankers conveying fuel, goods, and raw materials across Nigeria.

“This has, over the years, contributed to congestion, road deterioration, and frequent accidents, “he said.

Suberu noted that the new law was not only a preventive safety intervention, but also part of Kogi’s alignment with the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety and Injury Prevention.

This, he said in which targeted a 50 per cent reduction in road traffic deaths by 2030.

“This is in line with global best practices. We must adopt forward-looking solutions that prioritise human life over profit and convenience.

“We urge all operators of heavy-duty vehicles, including transport companies, logistics firms, independent drivers, and unions to adhere strictly to the new operational timeframe.

“Enforcement agencies have been directed to ensure full implementation and monitoring of compliance, “he said.

Suberu emphasised the need for public cooperation, stressing that the success of the policy depends on the joint efforts of government, private sector stakeholders, and the general motoring public.

He assured that awareness campaigns would commence across all Local Government Areas to educate road users about the regulation.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility. We call on every stakeholder to support this life-saving policy. We can no longer afford to normalize loss of lives on our roads.

“Special attention would be given to high-risk routes and densely populated areas such as Ganaja Junction, Zango, Felele, and Itobe, among others.

“Transport unions including NARTO, NUPENG, and the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) are expected to play key roles in sensitising their members and ensuring internal compliance mechanisms are strengthened.

“Kogi must not be a death trap. Our goal is a safer, more orderly transport system where every journey begins and ends safely,” he said.

The road safety expert reiterated that the new policy was part of a larger road safety reform agenda being implemented under the current administration.

This, he said which included improved traffic signage, better enforcement coordination, road maintenance, and driver re-certification programs.

Confusion as alleged killer of Kogi photojournalist suddenly takes own life

An officer of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Ayo Aiyepeku, who allegedly killed a photojournalist, Jacob Adebayo Pelumi, is believed to have committed suicide in Kogi State.

The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Williams Ovye-Aya, disclosed this on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

Ovye-Aya said Pelumi’s corpse was found in a hotel room in Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State, hours after police launched a manhunt for him on Wednesday.

Ovye-Aya stated: “The hotel management alerted us early Thursday morning to a corpse lying in one of the rooms.

“Upon responding, we discovered it was the suspect wanted in connection with the alleged killing of the photojournalist.

“We found a suicide note and a bottle of Sniper insecticide beside his bed in the hotel room.”

The police spokesperson added that Pelumi’s body has been deposited at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, for autopsy to determine the actual cause of death.

Ovye-Aya recalled that Aiyepeku was gruesomely murdered on Tuesday night in an office near the Government House/GRA area of Lokoja.

He said the Hilux vehicle allegedly used by Pelumi has been recovered and is now parked at the ‘A’ Division station.

A deep freezer found in the vehicle has also been taken into custody by the police.

Regarding the whereabouts of Aiyepeku’s body, the police spokesperson said efforts to locate it are ongoing.

  • Police declare late Kassim, 6 other suspects cultists, arms-runners in Kogi

Police declare late Kassim, 6 other suspects cultists, arms-runners in Kogi

The Police Command in Kogi  on Wednesday declared one late Muhammad Kassim and six others arrested suspects as cultists and arms runners in the State.

The command in a statement signed by its spokesman, SP Williams Ovye-Aya, in Lokoja, debunked insinuations that Kassim was killed in cold blood.

Mr Isaiah Ijele, Publicity Secretary of Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi, had in a statement he signed, condemned the killing of  Kassim , whom he referred to as a “Regional Youths Leader.”

Ijele had accused the police of killing him in a circumstance that suggests a politically motivated act,  and demanded for justice.

“The SDP demands a thorough and transparent investigation into this heinous crime. We call for immediate justice for Kassim. We stand in solidarity with his family during this time of profound grief,” he asserted.

Ovye-Aya debunked Ijele’s claims, stressing the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi command wishes to set the records straight on the unverified report being circulated on social media on the death of kassim aka Enemi of Idah, Kogi.

He said, “The suspect (Kassim), now deceased, allegedly belonged to and was member of a syndicate that deals in arms and ammunitions running within and outside Kogi.

“Following a legal intercept from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) in  Abuja, which indicted one Mohammed Amedu as a member of a Syndicate that deals in arms and ammunitions running within and outside Kogi, and the eventual arrest of one of the principal suspects by the DSS Operatives on June 22.

“The case was later handed over to the Kogi police command on June 28 for further investigation.”

He said the suspect confessed to the alleged crime and mentioned the said Kashim aka Enemi of Idah town, and others as members of the arms running syndicate.

“Investigation revealed that the late suspect (Kashim) was alleged to have purchased 20 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunitions to test run an AK47 rifle in his possession from Amedu, now in custody.

“Further investigation led to the arrest of additional five suspected members of the syndicate, while two locally made Beretta Pistols have been recovered.

“Consequently on this indictment on the late suspect, operatives attached to State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) were mobilised to Idah on July 7 to invite him to report and answer the criminal offences leveled against him by members of his syndicate .

“This was to enable the Police investigation team carry out discreet and thorough investigation into the case, but Kashim jumped the fence of his house and escaped arrest, when he sighted the police team.

“Based on his refusal to honour Police invitation and escape, the Operatives from Idah Police Division were mandated to lay surveillance and arrest him when seen, ” he said.

The spokesman said that when Kassim was sighted in a particular location at Idah, the operatives immediately swung into action to arrest him, but he vigorously resisted arrest because he was in the midst of other young men suspected to be his gang members.

According to him, Kassim took to his heels and was given a hot chase.

“To aid his escape, his gang members started attacking the Police Operatives with cutlasses, stones and other dangerous weapons which gave him the courage to stop and get hold of one of the Police officers’ rifle and began to struggle with him, in an attempt to disarm him and snatch the rifle.

“In the process, the rifle they were dragging got fired and hit the suspect on his leg while his gang members immediately rescued him from the police and whisked him away with the bullet wound on his leg to unknown location where he later died in their hands, ” he stated.

Ovye-Aya emphasised that investigation into the case is still in progress and all suspects arrested in connection with the alleged crime will be arraigned in a competent court of jurisdiction for prosecution on completion of Investigation.

  • Resolving the telecoms service disruptions in Kogi State – By Okoh Aihe

Resolving the telecoms service disruptions in Kogi State – By Okoh Aihe

Just when you think you have heard or seen it all in the convoluting story that is the nation’s telecommunications industry, you find out that the story hasn’t really started at all. In fact, more things begin to emerge from the cauldron of mysteries in the manner of what they call stranger than fiction.

Only last week, the misunderstanding between Kogi State and telecommunications service provider, MTN, boiled over, resulting in major service disruptions in the state. The likelihood of this development was very strange to my understanding because it didn’t look plausible that a state would intentionally want to jeopardise the possibility and opportunities for her people to communicate or transact business. But there it was, a normal business misunderstanding had been allowed to fester into a major wrench.

My initial doubt was quickly evaporated by the harsh words billowing out from officials  of the Kogi State Utility Infrastructure Management and Compliance Agency (KUIMCA) and Kogi Inland Revenue Service (KIRS), who accused MTN of refusing to comply fully with the rules of operation as stipulated in the official gazette guiding their operation in the state.

“On my assumption of office last August, I went through their files and discovered that they have not fully complied with the rules guiding their operations in the state. I called them for a discussion where they complained of being overbilled concerning the area of the state covered by their optic fibre. I went with them for a verification exercise to assess their claim, which took about 4 days, and we found out they were even covering more areas than they claimed. We asked them to go and make the necessary payment, but MTN refused. That is why we sealed off their facilities after obtaining a court order to do so,” Dr Taofeeq Isah, Director General of the agency told a team of journalists.

The action of the agency, this writer gathered, affected about 14 base stations, some of which are super base stations directly impacting about 147 sites. The agency cut some fibres and planted some state security personnel in the locations in order to effect a complete shut down. It is very likely that the shut down of the the operator’s services may be more extensive and damaging than the state can ever contemplate.

This is not very comforting especially for a nation that considers telecommunications infrastructure as part of the national critical infrastructure that must be insilutated from wilful damage except through force majeure. The telecoms infrastructure is very much part of the nation’s security architecture which calls for maximum attention and protection today, especially because of growing security challenges. Which is why the action of the state should have attracted the attention of the National Security Adviser. I do not want to assume that his plate is too full to find a place for a very unlikely development that has lingered in Kogi for over two weeks.

But does the State have a right to engage with operators and make some demands? It is my considered opinion that in a federation, Kogi is free to carry out engagements with those conducting businesses in the state but such engagements must be reasonable and within limits in order not to harm the state.

There are always demands on any sector that is succeeding and the telecommunications sector has endured worse things, even globally. The sector is seen as low hanging fruits to bring easy money to the various governments. The belief is that operators are very rich.

Only in 2023, in communications with the regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), four major mobile operators – Airtel, Globacom, MTN and 9Mobile who are memebers of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), bemoaned a plethora of 54 different taxes levied on them which made it difficult for them to expand services or even make good returns, pleading with the regulator to take their concerns to the government.

The pressure on the operators comes from the federal and state governments and Kogi only escalated the demand to an intolerable level in what looks more of sabotage backed by the state courts. For instance, a 2019 state law which makes right of way (RoW) renewable was also made retroactive and it put pressure on operators to make all kinds of payments. The state law is a subect of litigation.

If you ask my opinion, Kogi State shouldn’t be on the lane it is at the moment. I will give a few reasons. One. Kogi state is like an ‘ungoverned space’ in terms of telecoms development and deployment. Only recently, this writer raised alarm that going through the state, there was hardly any service in the major roads leading into and out of Kogi. Should there be an emergency what will the person on the road do?

Two. This writer is aware that the regulator has been making appeals to state governments to waive right of way (RoW) charges so as to attract more investments that will in turn lead to development. At the moment, seven states have jumped on board while quite a number are on the waiting list, weighing all the options. It is nearly anachronistic or even anathema to be making the kind of oppressive revenue demands with officials making a gloat of their action.

Three. And this should be of grave concern to the Kogi government. The state should worry about people’s impression of its activities. Two industry sources told this writer that Kogi is the worst state to do business in Nigeria because officials torment business operators with state laws and state courts.

They maintained that blinded by its revenue objective, the state doesn’t care about what happens to its people. “The implication of what is happening is that they are destroying the economy of the state while punishing their people. What is happening is strange and the victims are the people,” they explained.

They also informed that businesses watch how other corporate bodies are being treated. No investor will want to go to Kogi in a hurry, they said.

I am persuaded to agree with them. My position always is that as a people our fidelity to statistics is highly questionable.  It’s either we base our population on projections and assumptions or we are forever rebasing to generate friendly figures. Were the Kogi state government to do an  impact analysis of its action on the people and businesses in the areas affected, I am sure it would have canvassed for a more conciliatory resolution. But there will always be the hardliners who are ever ready to push the government over the cliff with sugar-coated arguments based on illogic. Unfortunately, they always have the prominent seats at the table.

The telecoms impasse in Kogi State has no place in common sense. The state is on a path not steeped in modernity. Perception of the state is already very bad – in the news for violent politics and sundry criminality. The state should be doing more to attract investors and not drive them away. Telecoms is a ready product to market a state.

  • SDP condemns Kogi govt’s ban on rallies

SDP condemns Kogi govt’s ban on rallies

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi has condemned the ban on political rallies and convoys imposed by the state government.

State Chairman of SDP, Mr Ahmed Attah, issued the condemnation in a statement signed by the SDP Press Secretary, Isaiah Ijele, on Tuesday in Lokoja.

The party described the ban as an attack on democratic principles and a blatant attempt to silence opposition voices.

Attah urged Gov. Ahmed Ododo to learn from the past and avoid repeating old, harmful practices that have hindered the state’s progress.

“The party views this action as an attempt to suppress the freedom of association and movement enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

Attah insisted that the state is not at war and urged the government to focus on development instead of engaging in political manoeuvres.

He warned that Kogi must not return to the dark days of repression, particularly against the opposition.

  • Fear of Natasha: Kogi LG Chairman imposes curfew in Okehi ahead her Homecoming

Fear of Natasha: Kogi LG Chairman imposes curfew in Okehi ahead her Homecoming

Apparently scared, the chairman of Okehi Local Government Area, Amoka Monday, has imposed a curfew across the council.

The decision aligns with the recent directive by the Kogi State Government under Governor Usman Ododo, which banned all political rallies and unregulated gatherings, citing security concerns.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Okehi LG chairman emphasized that the curfew is necessary to maintain the relative peace in the area. He warned that anyone found violating the restriction would face legal consequences.

According to the statement, the curfew takes immediate effect and limits movement and gatherings within designated areas of the local government.

“The curfew, which takes immediate effect, restricts movement and gatherings in designated areas. Anyone found loitering or assembling in restricted zones without clearance from the relevant authorities will be arrested and prosecuted,” Monday stated.

The chairman reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the security and stability of Okehi LGA, stressing that no action capable of disrupting public peace would be tolerated.

He also urged residents to comply with the directive and cooperate with security operatives deployed to enforce the order.

The enforcement of the curfew comes amid growing political tensions in Kogi Central, as Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, a key opposition figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), prepares for her visit despite mounting restrictions.

The senator has already dismissed rumors of canceling her rally, stating that attempts to hinder her movement are politically motivated. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have advised her to reconsider the gathering to avoid potential security risks.

Observers believe that the latest curfew directive may further heighten political tensions in the state, especially given Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent six-month suspension from the Senate and the looming threat of a recall allegedly backed by powerful figures in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

As the situation unfolds, residents and political watchers are keenly following developments to see how the senator and her supporters will respond to the latest restrictions.

Just in: Massive crowd gathers for Senator Natasha’s homecomings

A large number of supporters have gathered in anticipation of the homecoming of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the lawmaker representing Kogi Central in the National Assembly.

The crowd, holding placards and chanting in solidarity, awaits her arrival despite heightened political tensions and recent security advisories.

The massive turnout follows Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent public statement in which she warned that Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, and former Governor Yahaya Bello should be held responsible if any violence erupts during her scheduled Sallah celebrations.

In a post shared on her verified Facebook page on Tuesday, the senator reaffirmed her commitment to a peaceful visit while expressing concerns over potential disruptions. She wrote:

“My dear people of Kogi Central, I look forward to our PEACEFUL Sallah celebrations today. However, should we be met with or infiltrated by violence, Nigerians should hold Gov Ododo, Yahaya Bello & SP Godswill Akpabio wholly responsible.”

Despite the Kogi State Government’s recent ban on public gatherings, citing security concerns, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s team has confirmed that her visit remains on schedule. The lawmaker also dismissed rumors that she had called off the trip, urging her supporters to disregard such claims.

Meanwhile, the police have reportedly advised her to cancel the event to prevent potential security breaches. However, sources close to the senator suggest that she intends to proceed as planned, reinforcing her stance against what she perceives as political intimidation.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, a prominent member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been embroiled in multiple political controversies. Recently, she was suspended from the Senate for six months over allegations of breaching legislative rules. Additionally, reports indicate that she is facing a possible recall, allegedly orchestrated by influential figures within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Her political battles have also extended beyond legislative disputes. She has previously accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim that further intensified tensions between her and the APC leadership.

As her homecoming unfolds, all eyes are on Kogi Central, where her supporters remain undeterred despite the looming political uncertainties. Security agencies, political observers, and the general public await the outcome of what is expected to be a significant political moment in the state.

More updates will follow as the situation develops.
