Kogi guber: My state is like evil forest that needs messiah urgently – Dino Melaye

The Peoples Democratic Party candidate in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Kogi State, Dino Melaye, has stressed the importance of the November 11 polls by saying that “Kogi State is like an evil forest that needs instantaneous redevelopment and needs a messiah.”

The past senator said he hopes to be instrumental in ameliorating pains of those living in the state.

He further said it has never been this bad in the history of Kogi, as the state is more divided than at any other time in the state’s history.

Melaye, revealed on a national tv program stating that, “I have never heard of the Igala, Okun, or Ebira agenda.”

He however said since the All Progressives Congress came into power in the state, they have completely polarised and divided the people, and there is serious disunity.

He said part of the PDP’s agenda is to first reunite the state, as the slogan of his campaign says “One Kogi, One Destiny”.

Melaye said: “The satanic manifestation of the APC in KogiState Is legendary” He said a few days ago, the governor announced the upgrade of 300 traditional rulers. According to him, this is a manifestation of panic.

He assured the people of Kogi that “this time, no matter what the APC is trying to do, the PDP will defend its vote, stand by our people, and defend our people. We will not allow what happened in 2019 to repeat itself.”

He said in 2019, a woman was burned alive, “my nephew was shot dead within the perimeters of my compound, 11 people were murdered on the day of my election, and a helicopter was spraying bullets from the sky on innocent people ”

He promised that the PDP would not allow that to happen again.

He said, “The PDP is a peaceful party, and I am a peaceful man. I don’t believe in thuggery or violence, but we will defend ourselves.”

He said tension has been part of the lives of the Kogi people since the APC came into power seven years ago. “I have survived four assassination attempts; I have had 12 court cases of FG vs. Dino Melaye, and I have been attacked severally. It is not new, as it is in the DNA of the APC to be violent.”

Melaye said he keeps coming back not because of a political ambition but because he has a big God who is always there for him, and there is nothing man can do to him.

He said Kogi is the only state where a level 16 officer is paid 16–20 thousand naira, and “we cannot allow that to happen; we have to come out and defend the people. We are trying to rebuild what the APC has ruined.”

Melaye said he plans to bring change to the Kogi people because “today we have a government without governance; the people are living in fear, and we need to restore their confidence in governance. We will do that by treating every Kogite like a customer, and as we know, the customer is always right and treated with respect, dignity, and decorum.”

He promised to fight insecurity and tame those who are responsible for violence in the state.

He spoke on education, saying “There are no functioning primary schools in Kogi State as there are no teachers,” adding that the LGA workers have not been paid, and those that are paid are paid 25% of their salaries.

He said the current Kogi State government myopically and porously sacked 120 professors and lecturers at the Kogi State University, and these are people who became professors in Nigerian first-generation universities. “All these, I am assuring you, will come to an end.”

“We launched a website just days ago, where you will see ‘JUSTICE FOR KOGI WORKERS’, and we have requested that every worker that has been sacked visit the website and fill out the form.”

In a few days, over 300 people have visited the website and lodged complaints. He hopes to reabsorb them back into their places of work, as they were vindictively dismissed in the first instance, he said.

He said the PDP will improve the IGR of Kogi State without taxing poverty. “We have over two dozen mineral resources of commercial quality in Kogi, and only limestone has been tapped. We will make sure there is exploration of those mineral resources to the advantage of the state.

“I want to assure you that Dino Melaye is a global citizen. I have the contacts to make sure that we develop the facilities that will promote the marine movement. We have more than enough to drive tourism to our state.”

Concluding the interview, Melaye said in response to his love for shoes and cars that “it will be very myopic and intellectually stagnant for anyone to judge you by your side attractions; rather, you should be judged by the magnitude and intensity of your productivity.

“I am a businessman and do legit business; I have never been invited by EFCC ever in my life.

Kogi guber: SDP’s Ajaka boasts, says he’s the candidate to beat

One month before the November 11 governorship election in Kogi State, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Murtala Ajaka, has described himself as the most popular contestant.

Ajaka, who spoke during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, said the people of Kogi State are with him and will vote his party into office.

“I am the most popular candidate in the state. By the grace of God, the people are with me. By November 11, I am going to win the election,” he said on Tuesday.

“That is why he (Governor Yahaya Bello) is after me. He knows his candidate is not popular. His candidate is part of the problem.”

    Deal’
He accused the Kogi State governor of imposing a former Auditor General of Local Government in the state, Ahmed Ododo, as the flagbearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), over an alleged deal.

Although Ajaka did not throw more light on the supposed deal, he claimed that civil servants in Kogi as well as citizens of the state are against the APC candidate.

According to him, outgoing Governor Bello is nursing a presidential ambition in 2027, hence his decision to foist Ododo on the people.

“The civil servants in the state are against his candidate, virtually everybody in the state is against the candidate. He is the one putting this candidate because of the deal they have,” Ajaka added.

Asked to shed more light on the deal, the SDP candidate stated: “At the appointed time, we will let the world know.”

“He is putting this guy forward because Yahaya Bello wants to contest the 2027 presidential election. Take it to the bank.”

    ‘More than Qualified’
During the interview, Ajaka also spoke on his academic qualification for the state’s top job, saying he possesses the requisite credentials to occupy the Lord Lugard Government House in Lokoja.

Describing himself as ‘more than qualified,’ the governorship candidate said he fielded the minimum requirement – Senior School Certificate in accordance with the Constitution, adding that he has a degree to his pocket.

He added, “I have more than a school certificate. I have my first degree in Public Administration but of course, the constitution says ‘the minimum requirement.’

“I have to submit the one I know that nobody can call and change anything there. You can see what they are trying to do to my deputy now. The state government in collaboration with security agencies in the state has taken my deputy to court.”

Kogi 2023: Speaker declares victory for APC

The Speaker, Kogi House of Assembly, Alhaji Umar Yusuf, on Tuesday said the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Candidate, Alhaji Usman Ododo, has no any serious contender in the upcoming governorship election in the state.

The Speaker made the declaration in an interview with assembly reporters in Lokoja, shortly after the House adjourned to Nov. 21 in order to prosecute the Nov. 11 governorship poll.

Yusuf said: “In Kogi, there’s no other party as we made a statement loud and clear during our Sunday’s APC official flag-off campaign in Lokoja.

“Let me even tell you, there is no other party contesting the governorship seat with us as long as this election is concerned.

“The public need to know that the candidates of other parties are not serious; one of them is contesting so that he will be able to get money from friends and other people to maintain his lifestyle.

“While the other one is using the party he belongs to whip sentiments for him to get appointment in our government. That is all.

“I can tell you that they are not contesting. And there is no contest as far as this governorship election is concerned. We are going to win. We have won from the support we have right now in the state.

“We have 22 APC members in the Assembly. We have everything for our people to believe in us. So we are good to go campaigning for Ododo with no panic, no stress at all.”

Yusuf explained that the House adjourned to Nov. 21 to give members the leverage to stay with their parties and campaign for their parties as they participate fully in their activities.

According to him, “it is the party that sponsored us to this place, so owe it a duty to go and support the party and usher in the new government”.

He said they had people that God used to deliver them during their election on March 18 and that the same structure would be used to deliver Ododo 100 per cent on Nov. 11, by the special grace of God.

On the the burnt assembly complex, the speaker expressed hope that the contractor handling its reconstruction would finish the project before their return on Nov. 21.

He said: “We are of the belief that we shall resume plenary in the assembly complex when we return after the recession on Nov. 21.”

During the plenary, the lawmakers screened a commissioner nominee, Alhaji Suleiman Bashir.

The assembly also had first and second readings of seven Bills, including that of establishing Kogi Oil Producing Area Development Commission, and other matters.

Sen. Kadiri decries killings amongst youths in Kogi state

Sen. Alex Kadiri has decried the killings and indiscriminate brandishing of weapons amongst youths in Kogi, calling for government’s immediate intervention.

Kadiri represented Kogi East in the National Assembly between 1999 and 2003.

The ex-lawmaker made the plea while addressing newsmen in Lokoja on Monday.

He said the way and manner in which politicians used the youth to prosecute the forthcoming governorship election in the state called for concern.

“What is going on in Kogi between the APC and SDP as parties and their gubernatorial candidates in the persons of Ododo and Muri is a shame to democracy.

“I am a member of APC and I will continue to talk about the party till I die. There is need to stop using the youth for violence.

“I am pleading this day that the bloodletting that is going on in Kogi is enough and should be stopped.

“The rampaging youths are killing my people, and this should also worry APC and the governor of the state, ” he said.

Kadiri said, “I am an APC member and all attempts to use the boys in my ward to suspend or expel me has failed.”

He added: “I have not resigned from the party and I will continue to speak the truth to power as long as I am alive. My country is burning, my state is dying, I cannot fold my hands and keep quiet.

“Our people are dying, most of the young boys carry guns, rockets and bombs. I asked myself, the police, the DSS and all the security agencies, are they not aware of the number of guns circulating in Kogi?

“Will they claim ignorance. Can they claim they have no means of knowing where these guns are? Can they claim they don’t know who the hoodlums are?”

The senator, however, called on the Federal Government and security agencies to rise to the challenge and arrest the situation in Kogi and save innocent residents from harm and death.

Responding to the alleged insecurity, Retired Commodore Jerry Omodara, the Security Adviser (SA) to Gov. Yahaya Bello, said the security operatives in the state were doing all they could to deal with the situation.

“We are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that those youths brandishing weapons around and causing violence are arrested and prosecuted.

“I believe what those criminal elements are trying to do is to scare the electorate from exercising their civic responsibilities at the Nov. 11 governorship election, but we won’t allow that to happen, ” he assured.

  • Kogi 2023: Sen. Echocho denies breeding thugs, killer squad

Kogi 2023: Sen. Echocho denies breeding thugs, killer squad

Sen. Jibrin Echocho (APC-Kogi) has declared that he has neither political thugs nor any killer squad as being insinuated in some quarters against his good image and character.

The Senator representing Kogi East Senatorial District made the declaration in a statement he made available to newsmen on Friday in Lokoja.

There was a reported unfortunate fracas in Ajiolo Ojajji community in Dekina Local Government Area that left several persons injured and property destroyed, which political opponents have ascribed to him and his supporters.

But Echocho in the statement explains: “This my reaction is coming against the backdrop of a publication titled ‘Kogi Guber: Kogi East Senator, Jibrin Isa Killer Squad, Echocho boys launch violent attacks on SDP supporters’.

“This is entirely a fake news peddled by some persons, who are bent on tarnishing my good reputation for selfish political gains.

“This is because I don’t harbour thugs or any killer squad as being insinuated by those who don’t mean well for me as good politician taking care of the good people of his constituency.

”I am not into any contest or rivalry with any person. I have given good account of my stewardship and Kogi East is comfortable with my representation.

“It is with great disappointment that I respond to these baseless accusations, which seem to be a desperate attempt by some politically motivated individuals, who are determined to tarnish my reputation and discredit my service to the people of our great senatorial district.”

The senator said that his heart “goes out to the victims of the unfortunate fracas and my deepest sympathies to them and their families”.

He unequivocally condemned any form of violence or lawlessness, adding that such behaviour has no place in the society where all the people work together to promote peace and understanding amongst themselves.

The lawmaker advised those who seek to exploit the unfortunate situation for political gains should immediately desist from such, saying: “We must not allow divisive and malicious tactics to undermine the unity and progress of our community.”

“I want to reiterate that I belong to everyone and will continue to work tirelessly to promote love, unity, and peace among my constituents and all Nigerians.

“My focus has always been on making a positive impact on the lives of our people, and I remain committed to this cause.

“During my visit to sympathise with the victims of the incidence, I made a heartfelt plea to those who are attempting to use my name for political advantage to cease their actions.

“It is essential that we prioritise dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes over violence. Violence only serves to weaken the very fabric of our society and does more harm than good.”

He assured the people of the senatorial district that he would not be deterred by these false allegations but would continue to “serve you with dedication, integrity and a commitment to our shared values”.

“Together, we will overcome the challenges that confront us, and we will build a brighter and more prosperous future for all,” said the legislator.
