At last, Kogi State begins COVID-19 vaccination

Kogi State began vaccination against Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on Wednesday in Lokoja.

First set of recipients of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines were health workers and frontline essential non-health workers.

Kogi took delivery of 16,900 doses of the vaccine on Monday.

Commissioner for Health, Dr Saka Audu, flagged-off the exercise just as Dr Abubakar Yakubu, Executive Director, Kogi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (KSPHCDA), was the first person to take the jab.

He was followed by the Chief Medical Director of Kogi Hospital Management Board, Dr Usman Zakari, and some other medical officers.

Some other dignitaries who received the vaccines were CAN Chairman in Kogi, Bishop John Ibenu and Chairman of Kogi chapter of Jamaatul Nasir Islamiyyah (JNI), Amb. Usman Bello.

Chairman of the Kogi branch of the Nigeria Medical Association, Dr Omakoji Oyiguh and some journalists also took the jab.

In his remarks, Dr Audu called on Kogi residents to volunteer to take the vaccine, saying nobody would be deprived or forced to receive it.

“I want to clarify that nobody is exempted or will be deprived from this exercise; also nobody will be forced to take it,’’ Audu said.

The commissioner explained Gov. Yahaya Bello’s initial cynicism about the virus and the vaccine when he said it was about “a leader who does not want to deprive his people of an intervention that may be potentially beneficial to the people.

“At the same time, the governor wanted to avoid exposing his people to a new intervention that may be potentially harmful to the people.’’

He commended the governor for ensuring that the vaccine was eventually deployed in Kogi and said the ministry had taken delivery of 16, 900 out of the total of 33, 000 doses designated for the state.

He said the remaining 16, 100 doses of the vaccines would be deployed in a fortnight.

In his remarks, Dr Yakubu, of KSPHCDA, said the vaccine had passed through series of laboratory tests by the WHO, NAFDAC and other relevant agencies.

“The vaccine is virile and safe for the people of the state,’’ he said.

He urged Kogi residents to dismiss claims in some quarters that the vaccine was unsafe.

Bishop Ibenu, in his remarks, commended Kogi government for its pragmatic approach in managing the COVID-19 pandemic from the onset.

He assured Kogi residents that CAN would be the number one organisation to stand against anything that could harm anyone.

He stressed that it was against international standard and health practice to introduce anything that would be harmful to humanity.

“The COVID-19 vaccine is safe; there is no trick in it; please let us take it to boost our health immunity against the virus,’’ Ibenu said.

On his part, the JNI chairman, Amb. Bello, appealed to Kogi people not to be deceived against the genuineness of the vaccine.

He assured that JNI would intensify efforts at sensitising Kogi residents to take the vaccine.

Representatives of the WHO, the National Public Healthcare Development Agency, People Living with Disabilities and the NMA also spoke at the flag-ff.

Also at the occasion, the Dr Audu inaugurated a team of selected scientists to conduct research on COVID-19 and investigate any adverse effect of the vaccine.

The team would also research into the scientific explanation behind the relative sparing of Kogi by the COVID-19, the health commissioner said.

  • House of Reps member cries out over herdsmen attacks in Kogi State

House of Reps member cries out over herdsmen attacks in Kogi State

The member representing Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency of Kogi State, Hon. Teejay Yusuf has cried out over the menace of herdsmen in his constituency.

Yusuf said the spate of attacks on innocent, lawabiding and helpless communities by the rampaging herdsmen in recent weeks has led to the destruction of farm lands, loss of properties and other valuables.

“For instance, during the course of these attacks, a community school in Bunu District was burnt down, while just yesterday, two hunters on their legitimate business at Iyamoye town in Ijumu Local Government Area were brazenly, seriously attacked by these alleged herdsmen, who boasted and threatened thereafter to come back and inflict more harm to people in these and other more communities,” he said.

In a statement, the Kogi lawmaker said the attacks followed the rising, unrestricted influx of alleged Fulani herdsmen into some communities in Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency, which he said has led to very serious, grievous security situation, breach of law and order, as well as its negative effect on peaceful co-existence.

Hon. Teejay Yusuf has made a most passionate call for immediate actions by security and intelligence agencies to stem the tide.

According to Hon. Yusuf, the activities of these herdsmen who allegedly migrated into communities within the constituency from Ondo and other neighbouring states in the South West, has become worrisome and dangerous, which he said if left unchecked poses serious threat to the peace, unity, comfort and security of the constituency.

In the statement, Yusuf noted that, “it has become absolutely necessary that the unrestricted influx of these characters into our communities be tackled and addressed immediately and nipped in the bud with more seriousness, tact, courage and sincerity before it gets out of hand.

“According to reports, in recent weeks, the spate of attacks on innocent, law abiding and helpless communities by these rampaging herdsmen has led to the destruction of farm lands, loss of properties and other valuables. For instance, during the course of these attacks, a community school in Bunu District was burnt down, while just yesterday, two hunters on their legitimate business at Iyamoye town in Ijumu Local Government Area were brazenly, seriously attacked by these alleged herdsmen, who boasted and threatened thereafter to come back and inflict more harm to people in these and other more communities.”

He wondered how the alleged herdsmen who fled Ondo and other states in the South West were able to beat the different security and intelligence agents in and around these states and found their way into communities in Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency.

“One is appalled with the apparent downward slide in the activities and operations of security agencies across the country. That these alleged herdsmen were able to beat the vast security network from our neighbouring states and made it to our communities is not only baffling, shocking but confusing.

“Indeed, it is very painful that notorious and heartless herdsmen have been allowed to intrude Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency to disturb the peace, unity and tranquillity synonymous with our people. Sadly, since the influx of these ravenous characters, destruction of farmlands, burning of properties, gruesome attacks on individuals and other negative incidents that were alien to our communities are gradually becoming daily occurrences.”

Concerned about the likely impact of these growing attacks on the social, economic and peaceful development of not only Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency, but also, Kogi West Senatorial District and the entire States, Hon. Yusuf appealed for more pro-active measures by security agencies and total sincerity, openness and political will by the Federal Government and Kogi State in addressing and arresting the drift.

“If this unfolding scenarios festers and becomes bigger, no political elite, leader and the generality of our people will be safe, because no one, nobody, knows who may be the next victim of their attacks.

“The negative development is beyond party, ethnic or group affiliations and interests, rather, it is one that calls for synergy, collaboration and partnership of all and sundry. Most importantly, we have to be truthful to ourselves by doing away with undue and unnecessary bootlicking and deceits geared towards profiteering from the situation.

“It has become necessary for all leaders, elders, stakeholders and other well-meaning people of Kogi State and lovers of peace, security, unity and development to join forces and support relevant security agencies in any and every efforts to stop the spate of attacks on our communities and the entire state by these merciless, blood thirsty and demon-possessed killer herdsmen.

“It is expected that the Federal Government and Kogi State will wake up to their responsibilities. Truly, the activities of these wicked, emotionless and perverse killer herdsmen has become a terrible malevolent threat spreading across the country, resulting into loss of many lives, properties, farmlands and impacting negatively on our quest for meaningful national development, but we must, as a people and nation, never succumb to any of their nefarious and dastardly machinations. To achieve this, the Federal Government and States Government (including Kogi) must shun partisanship and provide the requisite political will.”

Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo on Sunday revealed that Governor Yahaya Bello is yet to heed the several calls from Nigerians demanding that he (Bello) should contest the 2023 presidential race.

In an earlier Twitter post on Saturday, Fanwo had said the desire of Nigerians for a great country aligns with that of Bello, “so we know the deafening calls will bring about a defining moment for our nation.”

Speaking with TheNewsGuru (TNG) on the likelihood of governor Bello to join the 2023 presidential race, Fanwo said he is uncertain if his sprincipal will accept the call or not.

His words: “It is a reflection of the fact that Nigerians are calling on him to contest. We don’t know yet if he will accept the call or not. Kogi Govt queries permanent secretary over bread levy saga

The Kogi Government has issued a query to Mr Usman Ibrahim, the Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Commerce for his alleged role in the bread levy saga in the state.

On Nov. 9, the Kogi State Ministry of Commerce and Industry wrote to the chairman of the state’s branch of the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN), introducing a company to collect a so called bread levy from members of the association.

The development sparked an outrage nationwide, prompting the State Government to deny the introduction of the levy.

The state’s Head of Service, Mrs Deborah Ogunmola, issued the query letter to Ibrahim in Lokoja on Tuesday.

Ogunmola in the letter, dated Nov. 17, said that Ibrahim had on Nov. 9, signed and addressed a letter to the state’s branch chairman of AMBCN on the subject of introducing an identified consulting company.

According to her, the letter also touches on payment of levies on bread by all bakers and caterers doing business in and across the state.

Ogunmola accused the permanent secretary of acting without due approval of the state’s commissioner of commerce and industry.

She said that the permanent secretary had also failed to provide a file documenting the approval for the dissemination of such information.

The head of service directed the permanent secretary to answer the query within 24 hours and explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.

The letter said that Ibrahim’s action contravened the provisions of Public Service Rules, Section 4 – 030402 (1), (N) and (O), which may lead to his dismissal from service.

Ehanire explains why FMC, Lokoja remains shut 4 months after

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, has advanced reasons why the Federal Medical Center (FMC), Lokoja, remained closed four months after the facility was attacked by some armed thugs.

Responding to a question at the Presidential Task Force (PTF) media briefing on COVID-19, on Tuesday in Abuja, Ehanire said Governor Yahaya Bello still has issues with the hospital yet to be cleared, noting, however, that a team from the Federal ministry of health is being raised to engagement with him and the hospital management in order to resolve the impasse.

Bello had insisted that the state was free of Coronavirus pandemic. But suspected hoodlums stormed the FMC in the early hours of Wednesday, July 1, destroying the administrative block and carting away computers and files allegedly related to COVID-19.

The protesters, said to number about 50, stormed the premises with placards and dangerous weapons, attacking and destroying valuables.

The timely intervention of men of the State Police Command, however, prevented more damages.

The state government, in its reaction, said that preliminary findings revealed that the violence started when relations of patients in the medical facility protested against the failure of the management of the hospital to attend to them.

Asked for an update on why the only hospital where ordinary citizens, who cannot afford the luxury of private clinics, was still closed, Ehanire said: “We are engaging with the Medical Director who is preparing to re-open but at the same time, we are still trying to iron out the issue with the governor, who has his own complaint about the operations of the hospital. That issue is being handled by the Minister of State who first spoke with the governor and the medical director.

“We shall soon come up with a team to go and iron out the issue so that the people of Lokoja and Kogi State can begin to get treatment and medical attention.”
