2023: Abiola remains PRP presidential candidate – Court declares

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday, dismissed a suit filed by an aspirant, Madam Patience Key to challenge the emergence of Mr Kola Abiola as the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed, in a judgment, held that the suit was statue barred, hence, the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain it.

Justice Mohammed, who said the suit was a pre-election matter, said it ought to have been instituted within 14 days from the date of the occurrence of the cause of action in compliance with Section 285(9) of the 1999 Constitution.

The judge agreed with the defendants that though the PRP presidential election was conducted on June 5, the plaintiff filed the suit on June 28, when the case ought to have been instituted not later than June 19.

Mohammed held that though Madam Key raised weighty allegations against the conduct of the poll, which she alleged was marred by irregularities, vote buying, non-compliance with Section 84 of the Electoral Act and gross violations of the party’s guidelines for the conduct of primaries, he said these could not take preeminence over failure to file the case within time prescribed by law.

The judge consequently dismissed the suit for lack of jurisdiction to hear it, having been statute barred.

The plaintiff, Key, had, on June 28, sued PRP, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Mr Latifu  Abiola as 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants respectively.

Key, in her earlier originating summons marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1001/2022, had challenged the emergence of Mr Abiola as the party’s presidential candidate, among others.

She had prayed the court to nullify the poll that produced Abiola as the PRP’s presidential candidate, among others.

But in an amended originating summons granted by the court dated Aug. 31 and filed on Sept. 2, the plaintiff sought a consequential order setting aside the submission of Abiola’s name by PRP to INEC on June 15 as the flag,-bearer and presidential candidate for 2023 election on account of gross violations of the party’s guidelines for the conduct of primaries and the provisions of the Electoral Act.

She said the party was in breach of Section 84 (5)(b){i) and (ii) ot the Electoral Act 2022, INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Political Party Primaries, Article 5 (13(a)(i-ix) of the Constitution of the PRP’s Guidelines for the Nomination of Candidates for the 2023 General Election,” among others.

She argued that the presidential primary was conducted across the 36 states and FCT, against the provision of the Electoral Act which stipulates that primary should be conducted in one venue.

Besides, Key averred that INEC did not monitor the June 5 presidential primary in breach of the law, citing previous case, Uche Nwosu Vs. APP, to back her argument.

But in a consequential amendment of Abiola and PRP’s counter affidavits dated and filed on Nov. 5, the defendants argued that the suit was statute barred and belated.

They also denied, contrary to Paragraphs 4a and 4b of the affidavit in support of the amended originating summons, that the party’s presidential primary election was held across the 36 states of the federation, but only at the Federal Capital Territory.

They argued that INEC was duly notified about the exercise and it monitored the election conduct.

Reacting in a telephone chat with NAN shortly after the matter, Madam Key said though she did not expect the judgment would go this way, she was, however, not surprised.

She recalled that besides Justice Mohammed who determined the case, Justice Fadima Aminu had, at one time, heard the matter also.

“Justice Fadima Aminu also heard the case and following our amendment she granted it, including cases cited by my lawyer in defence of our amended originating summons.

“But Justice Aminu was removed from the case unannounced. She wasn’t even allowed to sit for the next hearing even though Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed was not back from his sudden vacation.

“I want to encourage my team and supporters to be calm, stay happy and courageous.

“We have not lost any battle,” she said.

She said she would consult with her team of lawyers to know the next line of action.

“I love Nigeria. I love the party I chose but I will not condone injustice. I will still be standing even if I am the only one standing.

“And I am optimistic that we still have many good Nigerians who genuinely want the greatness of Nigeria. God bless my beautiful country, Nigeria,” she said.

But Benjamin Ogar, counsel for the PRP, said he was elated with the outcome of the case.

Ogar said the judge had just reiterated the well-known principle of law that would stand the test of time.

I will win 2023 presidential election – Abiola boasts

Kola Abiola, presidential candidate of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) has expressed confidence that he will win the 2023 presidential election.

Abiola, who is the first child of late Chief MKO Abiola, acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, said this at the launch of the party’s manifesto for 2023 in Abuja on Saturday.

Speaking at the event, Abiola said his party has no immediate plans to form an alliance with any political party for the 2023 general election while expressing optimism that the PRP would win the presidential election by a landslide.

“I can’t see any right away. You have to run the race before you start thinking of an alliance. We have a very strong grassroots network. We have been campaigning at the grassroots. We will soon begin our national campaign.

“We have a wide reach. We are in all the Local Government Areas of the country and we have 711 candidates nationwide. That is what we require to run a successful campaign. We are a national party that will make a big difference in the election,” he said.

Abiola dismissed insinuations that he was riding on his late father’s legacy.

“It is very unfortunate and ignorant of people to say that. I’m a man of my own right,” he said.

Alhaji Falalu Bello, the PRP National Chairman, described Abiola as an intellectually capable candidate.

“Our presidential candidate is physically fit and capable to contest alongside other candidates,” he said.
Bello faulted allegations that the candidates paid for various positions, saying it wasn’t true.

“We in PRP, whoever had the mandate to contest whether presidential or gubernatorial, did not spend a kobo that he gave to the party to be nominated for any position.

“In terms of principle, there is no party better than PRP; we have been tested; we had formed government in Kaduna and Kano states,” Bello said.

    2023: I’ll repeat my father’s feat 30 years after – MKO Abiola’s son boasts

Mr Kola Abiola, presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) said on Wednesday in Abuja that the party would win the 2023 presidential election.

Kola, scion of deceased Chief MKO Abiola said PRP’s victory would be synonymous with that of his deceased father on June 12, 1993.

He made the assertions when he and governorship candidates of the party received their Certificates of Return from the chairman of the party, Alhaji Falalu Bello.

Abiola who noted that it would be 30 years in 2023 since his late father won the presidential election, said “there is going to be a repeat in 2023.’’

“It reminds me of 1993. A lot of people came out for the first time to vote because of MKO. We are going to have a repeat of that in 2023.

“If we can win it then, we should win it now,’’ he said.

He said that the biggest role the PRP would play at the general elections was to serve as a bridge for current generation of Nigerian youths.

“We are going to bring the younger generation into politics, governance and leadership.

“I’m appealing to youths to regard us as the vehicle of change; we should make sure that at the next election, we have the highest voter turnout.

“By this, we will make your voices and number count,’’ he said.

Abiola urged the party’s governorship candidates to ensure that youths obtained their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

“This is the only party that doesn’t have any encumbrances. We will use that to build the future of Nigeria.

“We are a national party. To everybody’s surprise, we had 3,625 delegates at the primary elections.

“We are present in every local government area. We have 22 candidates for governorship elections and we have more than 500 candidates vying for other different offices.

“In the history of the PRP, this is the largest so far till date,’’ he said.

PRP’s gubernatorial candidate in Cross River, Mr Usani Usani, urged the electorate to “assess who they want and vote for that person irrespective of party.

“There are no two major parties as insinuated in some quarters. Nigeria has 18 registered political parties which are all active.

“I believe PRP has got what it takes to rule this country,’’ he said.

Earlier, Bello said the PRP is ready to offer leadership at all levels.

“We can compete with all parties to give the nation a new lease of life. Our candidates will win in free and fair elections,’’ he stressed.

A total of 3,625 delegates were accredited with 3,519 valid votes and 141 invalid votes

The collation was witnessed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),

Speaking before the collation of the results, PRP National Chairman, Mr Falalu Bello, said the delegates from the 36 states and the FCT voted for the aspirants from their respective states.

This, he said was with the permission from INEC to save cost.

“We want to make the whole process nearer to the delegates. The delegates are in the states. So that is why we decided that the primary election   will take place in the 36 states and the FCT.

“Definitely, having it in the states, rather than bringing them here, is more convenient for them.

“We set up 37 committees headed by the nominees from the national executive committee in the states along with the state organising secretaries to conduct this exercise in the states,” Bello said.

Bello further said  the aspirants had promised to support whoever emerged as the party’s candidate.

He added that the party decided not to zone its presidential ticket to any of the six geo-political zones across the country but to look for a candidate who was capable, competent and enjoyed wide acceptability across the country.

The son of the late business tycoon and politician obtained his 10 million naira Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for Presidency under the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) at its headquarters in Abuja’

Abiola showed interest in the country’s presidency last month at People’s Redemption Party (PRP) secretariat in Abuja, TheNewsGuru.com can confirm

Abiola will contest primary election with two other aspirants Gboluga Mosugu and Patience Key for the party’s ticket.

Mr Abiola’s decision has put to rest the speculations that he would join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on whose platform his late father ran for president in 1993.

Initial reports had it that Abiola could be joining SDP the platform through which his father contested and won in 1993.

Speaking to journalists after obtaining the forms, Mr Abiola said he was opposed to consensus arrangement.

He said he and the other aspirants have to decide who hoists the party flag for the seat in the coming election.

“We have two other candidates. We believe in internal party democracy. We are not doing consensus. It is a transparent party. The more candidates we have the better.

“Whoever wins, we will all come together and work for the party and not somebody calling for consensus where someone will step down for another.

‘I want to disrupt the political process’ – Kola Abiola returns to politics

Mr Kola Abiola, eldest son of the late MKO Abiola, presumed winner of June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, has joined the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

Abiola was formally accepted into the party on Thursday at its National Secretariat, Abuja by Mr Falalu Bello, the National Chairman of the party.

Bello said: “I formally welcome you into our fold. Your antecedents speak volumes.”

Earlier, Abiola said: “Today makes my formal inroad after, 27 years, back into politics.

“I particularly picked to come back into politics through the PRP for some good reasons.

“I have gone back to the history of Nigeria to look at the party that truly represents Nigeria.

“I have gone back and I have found out that the oldest living party is the PRP; it still holds those ideals of what Nigeria and democratic practice should be like.”

According to him, it is a party that was started by the people and truly for the people. It is a party that has showed first, as its priority, internal democracy.

“I have come back to PRP to show Nigerians that not too long ago, we did things in the right way and the new entities that have come together nowadays forget that there was Nigeria that did things right.

“I am one that believes in an equal opportunity be it employment, be it business, equally in politics and I believe this party represents all of these.

“Everybody should have equal opportunity, irrespective of age, religion and ethnicity and that is represented here,” Abiola said.

While raising concern over the low participation of youths in politics, he said: “We have a youth population that has been caught out of the system, the political process.

“The first thing I want to do is to disrupt the political process, to disabuse the minds of the youth on godfatherism.

“The way to do this is to give the true owners of Nigeria, that is, the 18 to 36 years age group that makes up over 75 per cent of the population, an opportunity for their voices to be heard and their numbers to count.”

He said PRP is the only party that could give youths such opportunity to make their numbers count.

  • This isn’t democracy my father, others died for – Kola Abiola

This isn’t democracy my father, others died for – Kola Abiola

Son of winner of the June 12 presidential election, Kola Abiola, has said Nigeria’s democracy currently being practiced was not what his late father, Chief MKO Abiola, and several Nigerians died for.

He further noted that it was not the kind of democracy several Nigerians laid down their lives on the line for. Kola Abiola, said this during the Tribe Naija, 2021 Democracy Day Fireside chat, with the theme: ‘This thing Called Democracy,’ in Abuja, on Saturday.

Abiola said, “I am not impressed with the democracy that we are in today, because it is not what my father and others died for. Is not what they put their lives on the line for.

“And I want to make sure we get what they will be proud of in their graves. The mantle is now for me to make sure that happens and that is what I mean by completing that bridge.”

He also called a positive disruption of the system to bring about the kind of change that will make Nigeria work for all citizens.

The younger Abiola said that the Tribe Naija platform, under which the conversation was being hosted, was designed to bring together young Nigerians who have the passion to think outside the box to bring about a positive change in the country.

Abiola said, “So, let us not make a mistake about the system. There is no system. We have inherited a system and it is time we turn that system on its head. The system just throws up what they want us to have and we have to pick from what they throw up for us to vote for.

“We will change that on this platform. Because our numbers will count and we will have a say. You will know exactly the numbers we have at ward, local and state basis through this platform. I am committed to making that happen.”
