Award winning filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan has slammed an overenthusiastic film lover for watching a pirated copy of his newly released film, ‘Citation’.

In the trending tweet, the Twitter user with the handle @iam_Muideen criticized the non-French translation in the movie. Unfortunately, the observation pointed out that his source was clearly not Netflix as the platform is currently streaming a fully subtitled film.

It turns out Afolayan was in no mood to let the observation go and got angry. He tweeted, “You are a very stupid idiot. That’s what you get if you keep downloading films from unauthorized streaming platforms”.

The rare outburst by the seasoned film director comes in the wake of reports that pirated copies of the film is flying around the internet.

‘Citation’ tells the story of Moremi Oluwa (Temi Otedola), a 21-year-old postgraduate student who seeks justice after a sexual harassment experience. It debuted on Netflix on November 6, 2020.

Kunle Afolayan’s ‘Citation’ ranked sixth top Netflix movie globally

Kunle Afolayan, popular Nigerian filmmaker says ‘Citation’, his recently released movie on sexual harassment, has been ranked sixth among the top-10 most preferred movies on Netflix globally.

He shared the news in a post via his Twitter handle wherein he shared a list spanning popular Netflix content.

Afolayan’s tweet comes as FlixPatrol, a streaming data aggregator platform, had ranked ‘Citation’, as the seventh top Netflix movie in the world via its top-10 for week 46 on the basis of “viewers’ taste and popularity moods.”

This put it ahead of movies like ‘Christmas Made to Order’, ‘The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie’, and ‘The Losers’.

However, on the Nigerian end of the Netflix space, ‘Citation’ has consistently retained first place among the top-10, putting the Nollywood film ahead of ‘Operation Christmas Drop’ and ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ as of November 14.

‘Citation’ tells the story of a 21-year-old female student on a Nigerian campus who takes the case of a randy and famed university professor to the institution’s senate body on account of the latter’s desperate advances at her.

Subsequent events that unfold eventually pit her world against that of the respected academic, baring the realities that have frequently played out in many male-dominated educational environments.

Among ‘Citation’s cast is Ibukun Awosika, chairman of First Bank of Nigeria (FBN); Temi Otedola, Joke Silvia, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Ini Edo, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Adjetey Anang, Gabriel Afolayan, Bienvenu Neba, and Sadiq Daba.

On the movie’s focus on campus sexual assault, Afolayan had said: “Citation will create awareness on the violence against women in the public and private sphere. It’ll educate society on enforcing women’s rights.

“The movie will encourage and embolden women to stand up against mistreatment and abuse by a patriarchal society. It has been designed to propel women to aspire to become successful leaders.”

Fans query Kunle Afolayan over wife’s absence in family portraits

Actor and movie producer, Kunle Afolayan recently got more than he bargained for after posting some family portraits of his children and that of his mother.

Many of his fans condemned him for having a family shoot without involving the mother of his kids whom he has allegedly separated from.

The drama began when Yoruba actor, Kunle Afod commented on the photos shared on Instagram saying “Great Family” and a fan replied with “Hmmm, are you sure the family is great without their mother in the scheme of things?”

Another fan wrote “Where is the madam of the home? This shoot is incomplete without her”

Last year, there were speculations that Kunle Afolayan’s wife, Tolu had quit the marriage over some irreconcilable differences.

TheNewsGuru reports that as at the time of filing this report, the revered filmmaker had not responded to the questions from fans.

In an interview Afolayan revealed that his father never encouraged him to follow his footsteps.

“I don’t know if he saw it coming but it was something he totally discouraged and we never spoke about it. The closest to that was when I travelled with him to distribute his film to vendors outside Lagos. It was even because he was short-staffed at the time that he asked me to go with him. I have been in this business since I was 14 years old or thereabout, and through that, I have been able to learn the business, tricks and art of making films. Perhaps I picked one or two things from his films but we never had any conversation on making films. He only always told me to go to school”.

I was misunderstood-Kunle Afolayan reacts as Mike Ezuruonye slams him

Popular movie producer and actor, Kunle Afolayan has reacted to an accusation by Mike Ezuruonye, a Nollywood actor, that he hates Igbo people.

TheNewsGuru recalls that Ezuruonye had taken to his Instagram page on Sunday to accuse Afolayan of tribalism after the movie producer shared a message from one of his fans who accused the actor of defrauding people.

In the message, the film executive had responded by asking what his business was with Ezuruonye and the claims against him.

This seemed to have provoked Ezuruonye who wrote a long invective via his social media handle where he described Afolayan as a “tribalist” who has always hated the Igbos.

“The small respect I had for you is gone. I wrote you that in your sick DM. U buy wrong Market!,” he wrote.

“You touched the wrong guy by posting this on your twitter and Instagram stories. U now acting like u don’t know impersonators are using Actors/Musicians/politicians /celebs fake profiles and videos to defraud people world over? Or haven’t u seen the ones caught in my respect and even jailed for impersonating me by @officialefcc? Why am I surprised, you’ve always HATED IGBOS?

“Are we going to forget in the press your statement years ago saying IGBOS are the ones spoiling the movie industry..U don’t like casting them. Well this IGBO ain’t like u cos he was born in Lagos and speaks flawless Yoruba. And loves the Yoruba people. U Tribalistic human!”

In his response, Afolayan said it was very unfortunate that Ezuruonye would label him a “tribalist” in retaliation.

The film maker also said that the actor misconstrued his message which was for “purveyors of fake news and unproven allegations that they should free him and by extension his other colleagues of such mindless allegations.

He went on to apologize to Ezuruonye and anyone who found his post “offensive” while insisting that he “maintained a mutual friendship with people of other extractions, Igbos especially.”

“I did not see my innocent reaction to an indicting post by a random IG follower as capable of further hurting my friend and colleague, Mike Ezuruonye, to be labeled a tribalist in retaliation is very unfortunate,” the filmmaker wrote in the now-deleted post.

“Honestly, I was misunderstood. My reaction, which was rather spontaneous, was to chide the IG follower who appeared to be reporting the actor to me. And I merely asked (in Yoruba) how all of that was my business. It was like saying ‘when did I become an officer of the law’.

“Obviously, my colleague took the context of my post wrongly, and angrily accused me of tribalism.

“I have told Mike ‘I’m sorry’ since he found my post offensive. I am also apologising to anyone who also may have seen things from his point of view. Ire o.

“I do not know what gave birth to such misrepresentation. However, while I am famous for living and promoting everything that my tradition stands for as a Yoruba man. I have maintained a mutual friendship with people of other extractions, Igbos especially.”

All is not well between Mike Ezuruonye and Kunle Afolayan with the former accusing the latter of tribal prejudice.

Apparently, the problem was created by one of Kunle Afolayan’s followers on Instagram when he sent direct mail to the Figurine producer accusing Ezuruonye of scamming women. The moment Afolayan posted the message all hell broke loose as Ezuruonye replied in no kind words.

“The small respect I had for you is gone, yes I wrote you that in your sick DM. U touched the wrong guy by posting this on your twitter and Instagram stories…Guy,U buy wrong Market!!

TheNewsGuru recalls that back in May, Kunle had said he could have become a rebel or even choose a completely different career if his father was alive.

“My children asked me a few days ago if I missed and feel sad that my father passed long ago and he’s not here to witness how I have turned out. My response to them was that, yes, I miss my father so much but the honest truth is I wouldn’t have turned out the way I did if he was alive,” he had said.

“They asked why and I said because he would have influenced my journey and I would have done and handled things differently. I could have turned out better or worst, I could have become a rebel or even choose a completely different career.”

In a recent chat with Nigerian rapper, Bouqui during her Instagram live session, Afolayan revealed that things were rough when his father died.
“I had nothing when my father died I was about completing my University education at that time. I have lived in the worst accommodations you can ever imagine. My father married beautiful women who had beautiful children. Our mothers were struggling, yes they were part of the film business, but my father was the one enjoying the money”.

Speaking further, the ‘Mokalik’ film producer said despite working in the banking sector, he knew banking wasn’t his destiny.
“I started really rough but I knew what I wanted to do.I finished school and ended up working in the bank. I knew that wasn’t meant for me but I stayed there for seven years and learnt a lot in administrative works, in corporate communications. In 2004 I said to myself, yes they are paying me, but this is not what I want to do.I didn’t have savings when I was leaving the banking sector. A lot of bankers don’t have savings because while you are in the bank, they will throw a lot of things at you and you will take loans to buy these things.

Reconnecting and working with the veterans in the industry is something I am passionate about, hence my featuring the likes of Papalolo, Baba Eda, Baba Gebu, Aderupoko and the late Alabi Yellow in Mokalik.
