No cult-related clashes at our university – UNILORIN

Management of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) on Monday dismissed rumours of a clash involving cult groups in the institution.

Mr Kunle Akogun, Director, Corporate Affairs Department of the University, told newsmen that the rumour was “unfounded and untruthful”.

“The attention of the management of the University of Ilorin has been drawn to a tweet on X platform (formerly Twitter), by one Naija Confra (@naijaconfra), on a purported cult clash at the University.

“The tweet failed to provide details as to where on campus the purported clash took place, an omission that instantly gave a lie to it.

“We feel duty bound to disabuse the minds of our stakeholders, including students and parents. Nothing of such occurred at the University of Ilorin ‘a few days ago’, or at any time whatsoever.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the University of Ilorin remains entirely cult-free, a status it has maintained for some time now,” he said.

Akogun reiterated that the purported cult clash, as reported by Naija Confra, “is entirely the figment of his wild imagination and has nothing to do with the University of Ilorin”.

The management of University of Ilorin on Wednesday condoled with the family of Miss Hameedat Sanni, the student who allegedly killed herself over financial transactions.

A statement by the university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, said the institution’s management viewed the incident with sadness.

“It was the most horrible way to die, especially for a promising young lady who had every opportunity before her to make it big in life”.

Akogun expressed the university management’s sympathy with the parents, siblings, friends and colleagues of the deceased and prayed that God gives them the fortitude to bear the loss.

The management then counselled students of the university to be wary of the company they keep in order not to fall into the traps of scammers.

“The University of Ilorin is reputed to be a bastion of moral and academic education.

” We are surprised that any of our students, upon all the moral and academic instructions inculcated in them, could have associated with such undesirable element of a supposed boy friend, and even went ahead to take the extreme step of taking her own life,” it lamented.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 20-year-old Sanni reportedly committed suicide after lending a boy she met on the social media platform, Snapchat, the sum of N500,000.

According to managers of the private hostel she resided in before her demise, Sanni was undergoing her SIWES programme before the incident happened.

The management asserted that the cause of her death was not unrelated to the pressure from the app agents, who were demanding fast repayment.

The situation was further compounded by her brother’s inability to assist her financially, thereby leading to depression.

“This is to inform all admission applicants to the University of Ilorin that the institution is yet to take any decision on the 2022/2023 Post-UTME screening.

“They should, therefore, disregard a message currently flying around online platforms to the effect that the University has started the process for the sale of Post-UTME screening registration form.

“This is the handiwork of scammers and admission seekers should disregard it,” he said.

Unilorin: ‘We do not charge tuition’ – Management

The University of Ilorin on Sunday said it does not charge tuition fees in line with the policy of the Federal Government.

According to a statement signed by Mr Kunle Akogun, Unilorin Director of Corporate Affairs, misinformation is currently trending on the social media over slight adjustments in the university’s charges starting from the 2018/2019 academic session.

“We wish to put record straight and assure our ever responsible students of the management’s good intentions.

“The University of Ilorin, in line with federal government policy, does not charge tuition fees.

“What we have here is university and faculty charges,” he said.

Akogun stated that the items that make up the charges are simply fundamental and basic.

“For instance, examinations remain sacrosanct, same for provision of state-of-the-art health and library facilities, in addition to stable electricity and uninterrupted water supply.

“The implication is that what is obtainable about 12 years ago can no longer sustain the university in this century.

“It should be pointed out that even with the slight adjustment in charges, Unilorin is still among the lowest charging federal universities in the country,’’ he said.

He said this can be confirmed by comparing statistics of what is payable in other universities.

The director noted that this does not foreclose negotiation between the management and student leaders for reasonable concession.

“Even if only one naira is added, there will be reaction.

“The question is how justifiable is the reaction in the face of current realities in providing qualitative university education with needed facilities that guarantee such.

“The management, ever so responsive, has set in motion a high level negotiation with stakeholders for possible reduction,” he said.

Akogun also stated that as part of the strategy, a meeting had been scheduled for Monday, Nov. 5, 2018, between the leadership of the Students’ Union, Faculty Presidents and officials of the Students’ Affairs to find a middle course solution to the matter.
