    Kwara govt suspends alleged killer-doctor, Adebowale

    The Kwara State Government has placed on indefinite suspension the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Kaiama General Hospital, Dr Adio Adeyemi Adebowale, who allegedly kidnapped and killed two women in the state.

    This was as the state branch of the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, has confirmed the status of Adebowale as a certified medical doctor and a member of the association.

    Adebowale, the CMD of Kaiama General Hospital in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara, was alleged to have killed two ladies, one of whom was his girlfriend, and buried them in different places.

    Spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, SP Okasanmi Ajayi, in a statement on Sunday, October 2, 2022, reported that Adebowale admitted to killing his girlfriend, one Ifeoluwa, who was declared missing in the Tanke area of Ilorin in 2021.

    TheNewsGuru.com reports that the suspect was arrested for allegedly killing a cab driver, Emmanuel Yobo Agbovinuere, weeks ago in Benin City, Edo State, and made away with the deceased’s vehicle.

    It was gathered on Tuesday in Ilorin that Adebowale was placed on suspension by the Senior Staff Management Committee of the state Ministry of Health, which is responsible for imposing disciplinary action on senior members of staff in the Kwara State Health Management Board.

    According to the police, the latest gruesome discovery was made after the newly posted State Commissioner of Police, CP Paul Odama, ordered a high-powered investigation into the case of a missing woman identified as Nofisat Halide.

    The statement reads, “Based on the CP’s order, the investigation into the case began on September 30, 2022. Working on a lead provided by the arrest and confession of one Dr Adio Adeyemi Adebowale in Edo State, who confirmed he killed one Ifeoluwa, his girlfriend, who was declared missing in the Tanke area of Ilorin sometime in 2021 and her body later discovered in a bush in Alapa area of Ilorin where he dumped it”.

    The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Raji Razaq, while commenting on the issue said, “Yes, I’m confirming to you that he has been suspended and his salary has been stopped pending the conclusion of an investigation into his activities by the security agencies.

    “He is alleged to have committed a criminal offence. We have to suspend him and stop his salary. We have to wait for other actions pending the time the investigation is concluded, and you know that a person is deemed innocent until he’s proven guilty of the alleged offence by a court of competent jurisdiction. We will wait until the investigation is concluded and the defendant is proven guilty by the court before we take any other action.”

  • Kwara State confirms first case of Monkeypox

    Kwara State government has confirmed the first case of monkeypox in the state.

    The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Raji Razak, made the confirmation in a statement he personally signed and made available to TheNewsGuru on Thursday.

    The statement said a 29-year-old driver resident in Gbugbu in Edu Local Government Area of the state was discovered to have contracted the disease.

    The driver, said the statement, had been placed on admission at a government hospital while members of his household were on surveillance.

    According to the statemen; “Kwara State Ministry of Health wishes to confirm the first case of monkeypox in the state.

    “This follows rigorous efforts of the surveillance and response team that had been activated since the index case was reported in the country in March, 2022.

    “The first confirmed case in Kwara State involves a 29-year-old Nigerian driver who developed symptoms of fever, generalised rash, and weakness in the last two weeks and had been under our surveillance.

    “There were contacts with the wife and four neighbours with similar symptoms where he lives at Gbugbu in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State. All of which have been resolved by the health team.

    “The patient has been on admission in the last 1 week because of suspicion of monkeypox. He has also been under strict monitoring by the surveillance and clinical team.

    “The patient is improving and stable in the ward.

    “The government’s team has similarly begun health facility and community case search/contact tracing.

    “The team will also intensify continuous public and community sensitization on the disease and its symptoms for public education and control,” the Commissioner said.

    The Commissioner further said there was an ongoing training and retraining of health workers to strengthen the response of the state government to the development, adding “the Ministry of Health is also notifying the appropriate agencies, especially the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, of the development.

    “Members of the public are implored to step up efforts at personal and community hygiene as we work together to fight this disease.”

  • Hijab crisis: Kwara govt reopens shut Baptist school

    Kwara State Government has approved the reopening of Oyun Baptist High School, Ijagbo.

    TheNewsGuru.com recalls that academic activities were halted in the institution 119 days ago over the crisis caused by the wearing of Hijab.

    The crisis was between Muslim and Christian parents who besieged the school to defend their respective faith on the wearing of Hijab by female Muslim students in the school.

    One person was reportedly feared killed while 11 others were injured during the crisis.

    No fewer than 150 final year students of the Senior secondary school who were expected to sit for their West Africa School Certificate Examinations (WASC) have been the Casualties of the closure.

    Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development however released a statement on Wednesday announcing reopening of the school.

    The statement which was signed by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Mary Adeosun, said the decision to reopen the school is one of the government’s multi-prong approaches to return normalcy to the school.

    It reads in part, “Consequently, all teachers and students are directed to return to their classrooms while the government white paper committee continues the efforts to address pending issues related to the recent disturbance in the public school.

    “Similarly, the Ministry restates the government’s position that any Muslim schoolgirl who desires to wear the hijab is allowed to do so in all public schools, including in Oyun Baptist High School Ijagbo, which is owned by the State Government and run with public resources,”

    The government advised all stakeholders in the area to give peace a chance and to respect the law, warning that “the government will not hesitate to shut the school again, among other things, if anything threatens the safety of the little children.”

    According to the statement, the ministry welcomes all the students back to school and urged them to maximise their time in the classrooms, while relevant authorities are also urged to help them to fill any gaps on whatever they might have missed during the closure of the school.

  • Kwara Govt approves naming of state varsity after Saraki

    The Kwara State Government has named the state university (Kwara State University, KWASU) after the late strongman of Kwara politics, Olusola Saraki.

    Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, made the announcement in Ilorin at the inauguration of the Sola Saraki Educational Foundation.

    Ahmed, who declared that the Kwara State University, KWASU, would henceforth be called Sola Saraki University, explained that renaming the university was a better way of immortalising the late politician.

    He said the late Waziri of Ilorin, had immense love for education as evident in his contributions to the building of several primary and secondary schools across the state.

    The governor called on individuals and corporate bodies to invest in education as a way of securing the future of the children and donated N15 million for the takeoff of the foundation.

    TheNewsGuru.com reports that Sola Saraki was the father of Bukola Saraki, Nigeria’s Senate president.‎

    Born on May 13, 1933 in Ilorin, Kwara State, he was until his death regarded as the “strongman of Kwara politics”.

    He first ran in the 1964 parliamentary election for Ilorin as an independent candidate, but lost.

    After the election, he returned to medical practice in Lagos, only returning to party-politics in 1978/79.

    In 1977, Mr. Saraki was elected as a member of the Constituent Assembly that produced the 1979 constitution.

    Sakari died on Wednesday 14th November 2012 in Lagos at the age of 79 after a battle with cancer.

  • Kwara Government shuts three schools over exam malpractices

    The Kwara State Government on Friday shut three schools in the state for involving in examination malpractice.

    This was disclosed by the State’s Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Alhaji Musa Yeketi, in a chat with newsmen in Ilorin.

    Yeketi listed their names as Topklass Secondary School, Kilanko, Ilorin, Banwo International College, Ajase-Ipo and AJVIC College, Amoyo near Ilorin.

    He explained that the schools were shut because they registered external candidates for the West African Examination without duly informing the ministry.

    According to the commissioner, the Banwo International College registered over 200 external candidates, which far outweighed its facility and the number of students in the school.

    “The management of the college never consulted our ministry for approval.

    “Also, two other schools in Amoyo and Kilanko, registered external candidates without due consultation,’’ the commissioner said.

    He alleged that at one of the schools, the ministry discovered that while some candidates were already writing the essay part of a particular subject, others were still on the objectives.

    “When we raised a question on this, the management could not give a tenable explanation,’’ he said.

    Yeketi warned that the present administration would not give room for examination malpractice or non-compliance with statutory requirement in the education sector.

    He recalled that some schools were closed about two months ago for failure to register or due to the substandard environment.

    “Those schools still remained shut.’’

    He, however, said the schools would be reopened when they fully complied with the directives of the ministry.

  • Kwara Govt. blames parents for poor attendance in schools

    The Kwara State Government has expressed displeasure over poor attendance and absenteeism of students in all government schools across the state.

    The State Commissioner of Education and Human Capital Development, Alhaji Musa Yeketi, stated this while responding to the questions from newsmen on schools’ resumption on Wednesday in Ilorin.

    Yeketi attributed the low turnout of students and pupils to the negligence of parents and guardians.

    According to the commissioner, it has become usual behaviour of students not to abide by the directive of the ministry to return to the classroom after holiday.

    He, however, urged parents and guardian to corporate with the ministry and teachers in order to bring the best out them and guide against any forms of absenteeism.

    Yeketi said the ministry has given the teachers directive to go ahead with teaching in the class in spite of the poor turnout.

    He called on both the government and privately owned schools to work in line with the school academic calendar, noting that any school that failed to conform to the calendar would be sanctioned.

    The ministry gave directives that school must end all academic activities by Dec. 7 and resume by Jan. 2.
