‘What INEC assured is not what we are getting now’ – Prof. AbdulRaheem

Prof. Shuaibu AbdulRaheem, the Kwara Governorship Candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), says the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not made substantial adjustment in their service delivery for the election.

AbdulRaheem made this observation statement in an interview with NAN in Ilorin on Saturday during the Gubernatorial and State Assembly polls.

He said that INEC assured that the electronic BVAS must have a SIM card which would enable it to receive signals from service providers, but the reverse was the case.

“What we heard is that many of the BVAS does not have SIM cards and now depending on virtual method.

“That is a lot of confusion in that area. What INEC told us is not what we are getting now.

“Electoral body says that the BVAS will be used and there will be instantaneous loading of data immediately after voting, but there is no evidence of that.

“Everything had eventually turned mechanical, so it is contrary to the impression that people have been given, that the BVAS is a revolutionary instrument,” the gubernatorial candidate said.

AbdulRaheem, also the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, noted that people were complaining that the materials meant for use were not appropriate.

“The likes of ballot papers, as people still have difficulty in identifying party logo.

“The logo was mutilated and the name of NNPP had not been written where it ought to have been written,” he pointed out.

The gubernatorial candidate said that there were unpatriotic citizens who had been given national jobs with INEC, adding that some of them are sometimes “agents of confusion”.

“There was a polling unit where some INEC officers said that they have not been paid, so they will not work.

“It took the intervention of a superior officer to get them back to do their job,“ he said.

AbdulRaheem also observed that there was low turnout of voters, but that does not stop people from exercising their civic duties.

“There is lower turnout of voters compared to the presidential election and the conduct has not been better in terms of malpractice.

“Like they say, the BVAS don’t have SIM cards and no Wi-Fi services for it to be activated, so how can anybody trust that kind of thing,” he queried.

Sad! 80-year-old woman dies in Kwara fire

An 80-year-old woman died in a fire disaster in Ilorin on Sunday, the Kwara Fires Service said on Monday.

Kwara State Fire Service spokesman, Mr Hassan Adekunle, who confirmed the incident, said smoke emitting from the fire suffocated the octogenarian who could not trace the staircase to escape.

He said fire-fighters doused the fire and prevented a major disaster in the area.

Hassan said though the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, it was confined to the first floor of the storey building from where it originated.

“Out of the four flats in the storey building, only one flat was affected,’’ he added.

He said the delay in making a distress call to the fire service enabled the fire to cause severe damage to the building.

“In a related development, another fire outbreak was recorded on Sunday at a residential building in Offa, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara.

“The fire which resulted from a power surge involved a storey building of about 16 rooms, but only eight rooms were affected.

“Total estimated property saved is N62.8 million, while total estimated property lost is put at N17.2 million.’’ Adekunle said.

  • Kwara Police Command bans protests, rallies

Kwara Police Command bans protests, rallies

Police Command in Kwara has banned rallies, unlawful protests or gathering to guide against hijack by hoodlums in the state.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Spokesperson for the Command, SP Okasanmi Ajayi, in Ilorin on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the command wishes to inform the public of the ban on any form of unlawful protest, rally or gathering in Kwara State.

“This order becomes inevitable owing to an intelligence report indicating that hoodlums have perfected plans to hijack any rally or procession and use the process to cause chaos and jeopardise the current fragile peace in the country and by extension, Kwara state.

“The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Paul Odama, understands that it is constitutional for the citizens to protest peacefully.

“However, a situation where such a protest or rally could be hijacked putting the lives and property of the people and government at risk would not be acceptable.

“This is a temporary ban to evaluate and access the security situation in the state.

“It is pertinent to also advise political party leaders to warn their supporters to desist from inciting and unguided statements on social, print and electronic media capable of inflaming crisis and heating of the polity.

“Consequently, aggressive patrols of the state and raids on criminal hideouts would continue as the command would do everything legally possible to ensure the safety and security of the good people of Kwara,’’ the statement read.
