2 students killed as cultists unleash attacks on police team

Two students have been killed in Kwara during an attack on security detectives by suspected cultists, the state Police Command confirmed.

A statement from the command in Ilorin said some cultists on Saturday unleashed attacks on a team of Police detectives from the Special Tactical Squad (STS) FIB, Abuja, thereby causing pandemonium around the Kwara State Polytechnic gate, Ilorin.

The statement by the command’s spokesman, SP Ajayi Okasanmi, explained that the team came on the trail of some cultists in the area.

It however allayed fears among residents around the state Polytechnic area that the pandemonium experienced on Saturday within the area, arose as a result of the attack.

Recalled that some cultists attacked and killed a student of Kwara State University, Malete, on Friday.

The statement said that four of the cultists were arrested and dangerous weapons recovered from the suspects.

It noted that some of the cultists were hiding at Lajolo area of Kwara Polytechnic Ilorin, where a similar attack was unleashed on one student named Idris Aderemi, at about 0600hrs on Saturday.

“This prompted the visit to the area by the STS team.

“Surprisingly, the cultists who were already in ambush, attacked the police team damaging the police Hummer bus, and inflicting a gunshot injury on the head of one police Sergeant, Adebayo Abdulahi, attached to the STS team.

“In the ensuing imbroglio, students in their numbers came out to block the road and prevented free flow of traffic and burning tyres on the road.

“The state Commissioner of Police, Tuesday Assayomo, immediately dispatched teams of policemen to the area to restore peace.

“However, two cultists, one Ahmed ‘m’ surname unknown, and one Musibau ‘m’ A.K.A Shaban, were arrested with one fabricated English pistol with 3 live ammunition, 2 live cartridges and one pistol magazine.

“The injured policeman and the suspects have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

“The commissioner of police, had however, advised members of the public to go about their lawful businesses without any fear of attack or intimidation,” the statement read in part.

It said calm has been totally restored in the affected area, while security men were on standby to forestall any further act of lawlessness.

Reacting to the development, the Polytechnic management described as misinformation that the institution’s campus was under siege by students’ protest.

The school’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Yunus Abdulkadir, explained that students of the institution were law-abiding citizens and would not indulge in any illegal activity that would disrupt their academic careers.

“Meanwhile, the incident that occurred at Lajolo community early Saturday morning was between the police and Lajolo community and has nothing to do with the polytechnic students or the campus, as first semester CBT examinations are going on right now at the Campus without any disturbance.

“However, the management of the polytechnic has magnanimously accepted the plea of the students who could not make it to the campus before the blockage at Oyun.

“Their examinations will be rescheduled to another date, which will be communicated to them via their heads of the department,” the statement said.

[Video] Outrage trails brutal flogging of Kwara Madrasa students

A viral video showing some madrasa students in Kwara State being brutally flogged as a form of punishment by some senior students of the institution has sparked outrage on social media.

Madrasa is an institution established for the teaching of Islam and other studies.

A segment of the video shows a female student on her knees while being surrounded by young men believed to be her senior colleagues.

A voice was thereafter heard instructing the young men, who were all wielding sticks, to flog the female student.

In another part of the video, a male student of the school can also be heard screaming as he was being flogged.

It is understood that the beating was a form of punishment for the students after they attended a friend’s birthday.

It was gathered that the students were severely beaten because they went to celebrate a friend’s birthday.

Pictures of the birthday celebration were posted online. However, their teacher saw the post and thought they drank alcohol, but they only had yoghurt.

After the beating, the students showed the injuries they sustained from the flogging and this has caused an outrage on various online platforms.

In one of the video clips, some of the students were seen showing the injuries they sustained during the beating.

The clips have since provoked outrage on social media platforms, as some Nigerians called on relevant authorities to investigate the matter.

Reacting, Nigerian actor, Charles Inojie, condemned the treatment of the students, saying there is no justification for such actions.

    He wrote on Instagram;

How could any school authority find justification for this? Which parent would see slide four and be able to sleep well at night, and to think that their teachers are there watching with glee and urging the assailants on is all the more heartbreaking.

Whatever offence they might have committed, the school should have other means of administering discipline than this brazen display of barbarism.

    He stated;

I hear this happened in Ilorin. Oya, Kwara State government over to you. You have a duty to redeem yourself before the whole world otherwise you would only have succeeded in raising hardened criminals that would turn around to terrorise society tomorrow. Say no to brutality, say no to man’s inhumanity to man, say no to violence, say no to torture.

Kwara court removes 16 transitional LG Chairmen appointed by Gov AbdulRazaq, orders fresh election

An High Court sitting in Ilorin has declared the Transition Implementation Committees across the 16 Local Government Area in Kwara State as illegal and ordered for the conduct of proper election to usher in new executives.

Justice Hassan Gegele, while delivering his judgement on Friday in a suit filed by Elite Network for Sustainable Development (ETSUD) said the appointment of Transition Committees to run the affairs of the third tier of government is against the provision of section 7 (1) of the constitution.

The Judge also ordered that all the funds expended in the running of the councils in the last six months should be refunded to the coffers of government.

Reacting to Friday’s judgement, the Kwara State Government said it would appeal the judgement.

“We wish to state that the reasoning of the trial judge is not a finality on the issue as it is subject to appeals at the higher benches, up to the Supreme Court. This allowance is guaranteed under our law,” a statement signed by the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Salman Jawondo, said.

“In exercise of its right of appeal as enshrined under the 1999 constitution as amended, the state government intends to explore that right.
