  • Barca rejected signing Mbappe in 2017

Barca rejected signing Mbappe in 2017

La Liga giant Barcelona rejected the chance to sign PSG star Kylian Mbappe in 2017, it has been revealed.

Junior Minguella, the son of experienced agent Josep Maria Minguella, told Cadena COPE how Mbappe was an option for Barca.

“I can confirm it,” he said. “More now than ever because a director confirmed it and gave his version of the story, it’s totally true. My father knew that Neymar had an agreement with PSG and was going there. The directors didn’t know or didn’t believe it. They didn’t want to take nay moves before he left.

“Then at the moment Neymar left, the staff and president had doubts over who to sign, and they thought Dembele fitted the team better than Mbappe.

“Some even said Mbappe was a ghost, who hadn’t achieved anything. We had a deal for 130m euros plus 25m in incentives, Mbappe would get 10-16m euros net.”

Mbappe could start as PSG target first Champions League final

Paris St Germain striker Kylian Mbappe could start Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final against RB Leipzig, as the French club target their first appearance in a Champions League final.

Mbappe came off the bench for the last half hour against Atalanta last week to set up the winning goal.

Tuchel told a news conference the France World Cup winner had suffered no reaction to his injured ankle.

Asked whether Mbappe could start in attack alongside Brazilian Neymar, Tuchel said: “Yes, he played 30 minutes against Atalanta and had no problems with his ankle.

“Since then he has had six days to recover, he will train and if there is the possibility for him to start we will see if he can play the 90 minutes. We’ll decide if he starts or if he comes into play (from the bench),” he added.

Mbappe’s introduction shifted the momentum against the Italians with PSG trailing by a goal before two late strikes booked their place in the last four.

Until the 21-year-old injected speed and invention into the left side, Neymar had carried much of the responsibility for the PSG attacks on his own shoulders.

Tuchel said the Brazilian’s performance had shown qualities that are not always acknowledged.

“Since I arrived he has always been a leader. A different leader, not as everyone understands him, but with his qualities, his confidence, his courage in the field, his will to win.,” he said.

“We also created a group with players like Ander Herrera, Pablo Sarabia, Keylor Navas and others, guys who know very well how to live together, created a collective atmosphere. Perhaps this is the key to seeing Neymar on another level,” he said.

Big-spending PSG had never previously reached this stage of the competition.

“We live in the present moment, we deserve to be here, we have had an extraordinary journey and season,” Tuchel said.

“If we got this far, it’s because we worked for several months, at the highest level. We are ready, we are hungry, but we do not think about the historical side, because we are in the semi-finals and we are there to win,” the German added.

  • ‘Kylian Mbappe could become a king at Liverpool’

Kylian Mbappe could “become a king with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool”, says former France international Willy Sagnol, with the Reds considered to be a good fit for the World Cup winner.

A move to Anfield has been mooted for a 21-year-old superstar who remains on the books at Paris Saint-Germain for now.

The success enjoyed by Liverpool over the course of the last 12 months, along with the presence of Klopp in the dugout, has made them an attractive proposition to the finest talent on the planet.

Sagnol believes Liverpool would be a good fit for a fellow countryman, with there every reason to believe that Mbappe’s game could be taken to even greater heights if he were given the chance to work with one of the best managers in the business.

He told SportBild : “This club [Liverpool] has a big advantage.

“With Klopp you have a coach with whom every player in the world would like to work.

“Mbappe would have to adjust under him. He demands a lot of defensive work from his strikers, which Mbappe is not yet good at.

“But he can learn that, especially from a guy like Klopp. No question.

“Mbappe could become a king with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.”

  • PSG star Mbappe reveals three players as his idols

Kylian Mbappe has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar are his main idols, insisting the superstar trio have inspired him to reach the very highest level of the game.

Mbappe has enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence since bursting on the scene with Monaco as a teenager in the 2016-17 season.

He earned a big-money move to Paris Saint-Germain after helping Monaco to win the Ligue 1 title, and has gone on to establish himself as one of the top players in Europe .

Mbappe says he looks up to Messi and Ronaldo, and says he also admired PSG team-mate Neymar for many years before linking up with the Brazilian at Parc des Princes.

“I have a lot of idols, there was Cristiano, who I loved a lot. And during this period of time, we have had Cristiano and Messi,” Mbappe said during a Q&A session on beIN Sports .

“I have the chance to play with Neymar, who I admired a lot when I was young. They are the players I admired a lot.

“When you have the chance to play at the top, you need inspiration from the best. Each one has his own style and strength, but they reached the top, so it’s inspiring everybody.

“So there is no reason for it to not inspire me as well, and we make our own way to reach the top.”

  • PSG star tested for coronavirus

    PSG star tested for coronavirus

Paris Saint-Germain attacker Kylian Mbappe might not be able to play in his team’s must-win Champions League match on Wednesday as the French star deals with a throat infection and a fever.

Mbappe was also tested for coronavirus, according to L’Equipe, but the results came back negative.

Mbappe is expected to be a game-time decision against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday but he has been included in the squad for the game.

PSG is down, 2-1, in the tie and will pla in an empty Parc des Princes in the second leg of its round of 16 tie due to coronavirus concerns.

“He was sick yesterday and he is sick today with angina,” PSG coach Thomas Tuchel said Tuesday, according to beIN Sports. “We must wait and decide tomorrow morning [whether he will play].”

PSG picked up an away goal from Neymar in the first leg in Germany to give itself a nice shot of advancing to the quarterfinals, but not having Mbappe would make getting through even more complicated. The 21-year-old Paris native is having a monster season and looks set to surpass last season’s goal total of 39.

He’s got 30 goals in 32 games so far this season and is coming off of a hat trick against Lyon a week ago.

Mbappe has scored in six of the team’s last nine games, and he’s either registered a goal or an assist in each of the last six games.

Second-half substitute Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick as Paris St-Germain defeated Club Bruges 5-0 to take a big step towards the Champions League knockout stage.

The France forward became the youngest player to score 15 goals in the competition at 20 years and 306 days.

He watched from the bench as loan signing Mauro Icardi swept home Angel di Maria’s cross to give the French champions a seventh-minute lead.

Mbappe was brought on in the 52nd minute and scored nine minutes later when he headed past ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

The French striker set up Icardi for his second before he made it 4-0 by converting Di Maria’s cross.

  • UCL: Kylian Mbappe rules himself out of Madrid clash

Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe has revealed on social media that he will not play in his side’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old picked up a hamstring injury and was forced off against Toulouse late last month and has not featured for the French champions since.

He tweeted: “It’s now official, I will not start our European campaign at home against Madrid. I am very sad not to be able to play but I will bring all my support from the stands to the team and I hope to return 100% to still and always give my best.”

Thomas Tuchel is also missing Neymar, with the Brazillian carrying over a three-game ban after his post-match reaction following PSG’s defeat to Manchester United in the round of 16 last season.

  • I’m not joining Real Madrid , French star insists

World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe on Sunday dismissed rumours linking him to joining Spanish giants Real Madrid, insisting he will remain with Paris Saint-German.

The rising superstar, who helped PSG to winning the sixth Ligue I title with an hat-trick against Monaco on Sunday, declared he is staying put in the Paris-based club.

Speaking to Canal+ after the match, Mbappe said he is staying in France and won’t me making the move to Real Madrid:

According to him “I’m staying at PSG. I’m fully involved in PSG’s project.

“I’m happy for Real Madrid that [Zinedine Zidane] has come back. I’ll watch their games as an admirer.”

Real Madrid has been linked with some big signings this summer since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and the return of Zidane as head coach.

The club is going through a trophy-less campaign, which is a huge drop off from winning the Champions League the last three seasons.

Zidane is Real’s third coach this season after the failed stints of Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari.

With the team struggling, and some players like Gareth Bale appearing to be on the way out, Real Madrid has been linked with some of the world’s top talent, with Eden Hazard of Chelsea reportedly set to join.

Each summer, Real Madrid usually splashes the cash and it’s going to need to if it wants to contend. It just looks like that for now, Mbappe is off limits.

  • I’ll never match Pele’s goals tally – Mbappe

World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe has often been compared to Pele but the Paris St-Germain (PSG) striker does not think he will match the Brazil great’s scoring tally during his career.

Mbappe, who became only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final as France beat Croatia 4-2 last year, has so far netted 103 goals in his career.

Pele claims he scored 1,025 goals during his playing career.

“Even with the goals in playgrounds, goals on the PlayStation, I can never equal 1,250 (sic) goals,” said the 20-year-old as he met Pele at a sponsors’ event in Paris.

“It’s really a long way off. I’ll try and get as close as I can, but I think I’ll still be a long way off by the end of my career.

Pele, who spent his career with Santos before a two-year spell at New York Cosmos in the mid-70s, wished Mbappe luck.

“I hope that he gets there. To 1,000 it’s okay,’’ the three-times World Cup winner said, “because I have one thousand and twenty five! If he gets one thousand, it’s okay.”
