Ex-Information Minister, Labaran Maku dumps APGA, returns to PDP

Mr Labaran Maku, former Minister of Information has declared his intention to contest the governorship seat of Nasarawa State in 2023 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Maku, a one-time deputy governor and ex-Commissioner in Nasarawa State, made the declaration on Saturday in Lafia when he led his supporters to inform the State Working Committee (SWC) of the PDP of his return to the party.

Maku, who until his recent return to PDP, was the National Secretary of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), apologised to party members for leaving them since 2015.

He said that he had been a committed member and had served in various capacities at the state and federal levels before he left following dissatisfaction with outcome of the 2015 governorship primary of the party.

The former minister said though he could not justify his departure from the party, he asked for forgiveness from party members, adding that he had forgiven all that betrayed him in the past.

Maku said he would contest the governorship seat and promised to accept the outcome of the party’s primary, adding that he would work with whoever picked the ticket to deliver the state to the party in 2023.

He said the state had suffered a lot from bad governance, poor performance by government officials and total neglect of the people in the last 12 years.

“We are on a rescue mission under PDP,’’ he said and appealed to the people to vote out APC in 2023.

Responding, Francis Orogu, PDP Chairman in the state expressed joy at Maku’s return, adding that the leadership of the party had been working since 2019 to reabsorb him.

He described Maku’s return as home-coming and said that the development would add value to the PDP ahead of forthcoming primary.

Orogu assured Maku that the leadership of the party would provide a level playing ground for all aspirants to realise their ambitions.

The chairman also commended Maku for regularly speaking truth to power and called on other stakeholders in the party to always speak for the suffering masses.

  • Nasarawa: I have not stepped down as governorship candidate – Labaran Maku

The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in Nasarawa State, Labaran Maku, has reacted to reports that he has ‘stepped down’ from the Saturday’s governorship election in the State.

A letter allegedly emanating from the Labaran Maku Campaign Organisation had claimed that the former Minister of Information under the immediate past administration had stepped down for a preferred governorship candidate.

However, the Director General of Labaran Maku Campaign Organisation, Nawani Aboki described the letter as fake and should be “discountenanced” by members of the public.

In a statement, the campaign organization restated that Maku would be on the ballot on Saturday.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Labaran Maku Campaign Organisation has been drawn to a fake letter being circulated and purportedly signed by the Director General of Nawani Aboki claiming that his Excellency, Labaran Maku, CON, has withdrawn from the governorship race to the advantage of a particular person.

“We wish to inform the general public that the said public communication is fake in its entirety and only the figment of the imagination of the dark, evil and satanic forces that are hell-bent on stopping the new break of a new dawn in Nasarawa State.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the unsigned and undated statement was not issued by Labaran Maku Campaign Organisation and should be totally discountenanced. Indeed, those who issued the letter are robbers who stole the official headed paper of the Campaign Organisation.

“Having just been endorsed as the sole candidate of the Eggon nation a few hours ago, His Excellency, Labaran Maku once again wishes to inform that he will be on the ballot paper on Saturday, March 2, 2019.”

  • DSS summons Jonathan’s ex-minister, Labaran Maku for questioning

The Department of State Services (DSS), Nasarawa state command, on Wednesday invited the former Minister of Communication, Labaran Maku for questioning.

Maku who also doubles as the National Secretary of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), described his invitation by the DSS as “a good one” which, he said, has nothing to do with the speculations in the social media that he would be arrested.

Recall that Maku had earlier called on politicians to desist from shedding the blood of innocent Nigerians on account of the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

Maku made the call in Lafia, shortly after he was quizzed for undisclosed issues for about an hour by the Nasarawa State Command of DSSS.

He urged politicians to join hands and bring peace and development to their communities instead of promoting violence and bloodshed.

According to him, as politicians, they could disagree on issues, but that does not mean that they are enemies, adding that disagreement is an important attribute of a democratic system.

He, however, affirmed that disagreement by politicians should be geared towards making the society better and not to destroy it.

“I was a commissioner, deputy governor in Nasarawa State and minister at the Federal level, but today, I am not longer in position, but I can still move around freely because I served the country very well and refused to be corrupt.

“So, leaders should understand that the authority and privilege of every public office would surely end one day, whether we like it or not.”

He condemned the massive relocation of Tiv people from Nasarawa State due to herdsmen attacks and called on the state government to live up to its responsibilities of securing lives and property.
