Obasa opens up on his political ambition after Lagos speakership

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has admitted he is considering life beyond the speakership, saying he does not rule out a governorship ambition.

Obasa, who recently faced a political storm that briefly saw him removed from his position, said this in an interview with Television Continental on Thursday.

In his previous interview with the TV station, Obasa had said that the next step in his political career is to become a senator or a governor, having served as a councillor and speaker.

When reminded about the statement, Obasa said the statement, which he made seven years ago, wasn’t assertive.

He maintained that his aspirations and decisions about his political future ultimately rest with his party.

“Let me just explain. Now that we are talking about politics, you have to be a member of a political party and if you are a member of a political party, you have to believe in the leadership of the party,” Obasa said.

He explained that although every politician has ambitions, progression in politics depends on party structures and leaders.

“So you get to a stage where you cannot determine what is next for you. On your own, you may aspire that I want to become this, but if you have respect for the party and the way the party is being managed, you know that the party leaders will sit together and decide who will be next. It’s all about consultation, engagement with the party leaders,” he added.

The Speaker, however, did not deny harbouring governorship ambitions. When asked if he would consider extending his stay in the Lagos Assembly for another four-year term, Obasa responded, “not really.”

  • Obasa’s alleged wrongful removal suit hearing adjourned till March 10

Obasa’s alleged wrongful removal suit hearing adjourned till March 10

An Ikeja High Court on Friday extended until March 10 to hear the  suit filed by the reinstated Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

Obasa is challenging the allegations that led to his initial removal as speaker, which included fraud, high-handedness, abuse of office, and gross misconduct.

The respondents in the suit are members of the state assembly and former speaker, Mojisola Meranda.

When the case was called on Friday, Justice Yetunde  Pinheiro, ordered all parties to file and serve their processes before the next adjourned date.

She adjourned the case until  March 10 for the hearing of all applications, including Obasa’s originating summon.

Earlier, Obasa’s lead counsel, Mr Afolabi Fasanu (SAN), informed the court that though the embattled speaker had been reinstated, the suit had not become an academic exercise.

He argued that the claimant was not given a fair hearing.

According to him, the speaker is now contending with the allegations in the notice of his removal.

Mr Romeo Ese-Michael, counsel to the 34 lawmakers, said: “Even if the complainant withdraws his suit due to his re-election, our counterclaim still stands.

“The lawmakers want the court to declare that the speaker’s removal was constitutional and was in tandem with Section 92 of the 1999 Constitution, rather than the rules guiding the Lagos State House of Assembly”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Obasa was impeached on Jan. 13, following allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office, and the deputy was elected as his successor.

However, on March 3, Obasa was reinstated as the speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly.

NAN reports that Obasa returned as the speaker, following Meranda’s resignation.

Court to hear Obasa’s alleged wrongful removal suit March 7

The ousted speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has brought several applications before an Ikeja High Court challenging his removal as speaker.

The respondents in the suit are members of the state assembly and the current speaker, Mojisola Meranda.

Recall that Obasa was impeached on Jan. 13, following allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office, and the deputy, Meranda, was elected as his successor.

When the case was called on Friday, several Senior Advocates of Nigeria appeared for the plaintiff and the respondents.

NAN reports that Mr Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), appeared for Obasa, while Mr Femi Falana (SAN), Mr Muiz Banire (SAN) and a team of other lawyers represented 34 lawmakers.

Also, Mr Olu Daramola (SAN) and Mr Dada Awosika (SAN) represented other members of the house seeking to be joined in the suit.

Equally, Mr Tayo Oyetibo (SAN) led Mrs Bimbo Akeredolu (SAN) and other lawyers to represent Meranda, the new speaker.

NAN also reports that there was a mild drama over who would represent members of the state assembly.

Falana initially announced his appearance for the assembly members but another counsel, Mr Abang Mkpandiok told the court he was also representing the assembly members.

Mkpandiok said he was briefed on Thursday night by the assembly members and had filed a motion for  change of counsel in the morning.

He said that the choice of counsel was a fundamental right and urged the court to take his application first.

Falana, in his objection, told the court that he had not been served and remained the counsel on record for the assembly members.

Oyetibo also confirmed to the court  that  he had not been served with the application.

Mkpandiok then elected to serve the application in court.

After looking through the court’s records, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro, stated that the application for change of counsel was not ripe for hearing.

She held, “The application for accelerated hearing will not be taking today”.

Pinheiro, in her short ruling, also ordered that all members of the Lagos House of Assembly be joined as parties in the suit.

The judge adjourned until March 7 for hearing of the pending preliminary objections.

According to reports, in an application dated Feb.12, Obasa had alleged that he was unlawfully removed from his position on Jan. 13 by 36 lawmakers, while he was abroad.

Some members of the house who were not initially listed as defendants, filed their applications seeking to be joined as parties.

Lagos Speaker: Obasa absent as Meranda moves into office

Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday witnessed a significant shift in leadership, as the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, officially moved into the speaker’s office amidst members’ support.

NAN reports that Meranda was accompanied by members of the assembly to the complex in a show of solidarity and support.

This development followed the impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, on Jan. 13, even though he had, on Saturday, described his removal as unconstitutional and laid claim to the office.

However, in spite of his insistence on being the speaker, Obasa was conspicuously absent from the assembly on Monday, amidst tight security to forestall any breakdown of law and order.

Meranda’s assumption of office witnessed a warm reception from her colleagues who had since accepted her leadership and rallied round her.

Members were seen following the speaker to her office, signaling a collective endorsement of the new leadership.

The absence of Obasa, who had promised to resume duties on Monday, has raised questions about his next step.

NAN also reports that the atmosphere at the assembly complex on Monday reflected the lawmakers’ readiness to help pull through Meranda’s resolve to maintain stability and uphold legislative duties after the change of leadership.

Members were seen taking pictures with the speaker, while the acting Clerk equally joined in the celebrations.

Impeached Lagos Speaker Obasa finally opens up, says his removal did not follow due process

Ex-Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has described the allegations against him as “fictitious and unsubstantiated.”

Obasa made this declaru during at a welcome rally at his Joel Ogunnaike GRA residence in Ikeja on Saturday.

The former Speaker said his removal was done without following the proper procedures.

He alleged that the Commissioner of Police in the state led security agents to invade the assembly ahead of his removal.

Furthermore, Obasa claimed that his Agege and Ikeja residences were invaded by over 200 policemen, who locked his family indoors. He said, “If I am not speaker, that’s not the end of the world.

If you want to claim that I am corrupt, please prove it. “It’s possible to construct a gate, ordinary gate with N16bn? When it’s not Jericho wall.”

The former Speaker’s removal was carried out by more than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house, who voted him out over alleged misconduct and sundry offences.

Obasa’s deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was subsequently elected as the new Speaker, becoming the first female to take charge of the legislative body in the Southwest state.

Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, has been a member of the House since 2007. He emerged as Speaker in June 2015 and held the position until his removal in January 2025.

  • Court acquits ex-Lagos Speaker Ikuforiji of money laundering charge

Court acquits ex-Lagos Speaker Ikuforiji of money laundering charge

Justice Mohammed Liman of a Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday, acquitted a former speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji and his former aide, Oyebode Atoyebi, of 54-counts of money laundering..

Delivering judgment, Justice Liman held that the prosecution failed to discharge the burden of proof placed on it by the provisions of the law.

Ikuforiji is charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alongside Atoyebi on a 54-counts charge bordering on alleged N338.8 million money laundering.

They had each pleaded not guilty and were allowed to continue on an earlier bail granted to them in 2012 when they were first arraigned.

On March 17, 2021, the EFCC had closed its case after calling the second witness for the prosecution.

Prosecution called a total of two witnesses in support of its case.

Meanwhile, Justice Liman was later transferred out of the Lagos division and the case suffered several set backs.

On May 4, 2023, defence counsel Mr Dele Adesina (SAN), had opened the case for the defence.

The defence had called three witnesses, ncluding the first defendant (Ikuforiji).

Among others, Ikuforiji had testified how he was being prosecuted on a faceless petition.

He had told the court that the instant case arose from a petition written by an unknown person, alleging that he had stolen about N7 billion from the Lagos House of Assembly.

Parties adopted their final addresses on May 17, while the court reserved judgement.

Justice Liman first struck out count one of the charge, on grounds of discrepancies in the timeline .

The court then asked a pertinent question as to what was the substantive law at the time the defendant was charged.

The court held : “Charging a person under a law that was non existent at the time of an alleged offence runs foul of the law.

“The Money Laundering Prohibition Act of 2004/2011 requires clear ievidence of intent and the actual act of laundering money.

“It is difficult to prove the offence of money laundering without the predicate offence; the prosecution has failed to prove this.

“The prosecution has not proved the offence of money laundering beyond reasonable doubts.

“Consequently, the defendants are acquitted of all the allegations of money laundering levelled against them in courts two to 54 of the charge,” he said

NAN reports that the defendants were first arraigned on March 1, 2012 before Justice Okechukwu Okeke on a 20-count charge bordering on misappropriation and money laundering.

They had each pleaded not guilty to the charges and were granted bails.

The defendants were, however, subsequently re-arraigned before Justice Ibrahim Buba, following a re-assignment of the case.

Buba had granted them bail in the sum of N500 million each with sureties in like sun

On Sept. 26, 2014, Justice Buba discharged Ikuforiji and his aide of the charges, after upholding a no case submission of the defendants.

Buba had held that the EFCC failed to establish a prima-facie case against them.

Dissatisfied with the ruling, the EFCC through its counsel, Mr Godwin Obla (SAN), filed the Notice of Appeal dated Sept. 30, 2014 challenging the decision of the trial court.

Obla had argued that the trial court erred in law when it held that the counts were incompetent because they were filed under Section 1(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004 which was repealed by an Act of 2011.

EFCC further argued that the lower court erred in law when it held that the provisions of Section 1 of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004 and 2011, only applied to natural persons and corporate bodies other than the Government.

The commission had also submitted that the trial judge erred in law when he held and concluded that the testimonies of the prosecution witnesses supported the innocence of the respondents.

In its judgment, the Lagos Division of the Appeal Court, in November 2016, agreed with the prosecution and ordered a fresh trial of the defendants before another judge.

Following the decision of the Appeal Court, the defendants headed for the Supreme Court, seeking to upturn the ruling of the Appellate court.

Again, in its verdict, the apex court also upheld the decision of the appellate court and ordered that the case be sent back to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for reassignment to another judge.

According to the charge, EFCC alleged that the defendants accepted cash payments above the threshold set by the Money Laundering Act, without going through a financial institution.

The commission accused the defendants of conspiring to commit an illegal act of accepting cash payments in the aggregate sum of N338.8 million from the House of Assembly without going through a financial institution.

Ikuforiji was also accused of using his position to misappropriate funds belonging to the Assembly.

The EFCC said that the defendants committed the offence between April 2010 and July 2011.

The offences, according to the EFCC, contravenes the provisions of Sections 15 (1d), 16(1d) and 18 of Money Laundering Act, 2004 and 2011.
