A newly re-elected Sanwo-Olu added that Tinubu’s emergence as president-elect is a reward for his hard work and contributions to the country.

Asiwaju Tinubu has donated the greater part of his adult life for service to humanity, Lagos State and Nigeria

He said, “At 71, Asiwaju has attained the age, that what matters most is the legacy to bequeath to people after him and God has blessed him with a great opportunity to take the mantle of leadership of Nigeria, and chart the right path of progress for the people of Nigeria.

“Asiwaju Tinubu has donated the greater part of his adult life for service to humanity, Lagos State and Nigeria. His many contributions to democracy and good governance have helped the political and democratic trajectory of Nigeria since 1999. It is also on record that he stood firmly on the side of the Nigerian people, even at the risk of losing his life and personal belongings during the dark days of the military junta.

“He fought tirelessly with other progressives and pro-democracy activists during the annulment of the June 12 struggle to end the military interregnum and enthroned democracy, which we all enjoy today.”

God will give him wisdom, knowledge, sound health and good things that he will use to steer the ship of the country

“In the political history of Nigeria, Asiwaju will forever be a reference point. He has made and redefined the socio-political history of Nigeria by contributing his quota to the survival of democracy and uninterrupted civilian administration in Nigeria for 24 years. His emergence as President-elect is a reward for his hard work and contributions to the country based on his political astuteness, courage, and sagacity.

“As he is celebrating 71st birthday, we wish him all the love and care in the world and pray that God will give him wisdom, knowledge, sound health and good things that he will use to steer the ship of the country and navigate Nigeria’s development to the desired place as he becomes Nigeria’s President from May 29, 2023.

“On behalf of my darling wife, Ibijoke, and the good people of Lagos State, as well as leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I wish the nation’s President-Elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, happy 71st birthday.”

(PHOTOS) “I shall do everything in my power to ensure that genuine healing takes place” -Gov Sanwo-Olu promises

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who is to occupy the position for another four years (2nd tenure), has promised to do everything in his power to ensure that genuine healing takes place in the state.

“We will continue to run an inclusive government, that delivers for all the people of Lagos, wherever in the State they may be living,” he said

In his message, posted on Twitter, the governor-elect (Sanwo-Olu) stated: “Thank you Lagosians!

“I am deeply humbled and grateful for the overwhelming support and trust of the good people of Lagos State. I am honored to be re-elected as your Governor and pledge to continue to work tirelessly to deliver a better Lagos for all.

“Thank you for believing in me.

“I have personally penned my thoughts in a letter to you. I hope you read it and truly feel my passion for Lagos and for you: https://bit.ly/JideSanwoolu

“These elections have deeply tested us as a people. This victory is not just mine, but it belongs to every Lagosian.

“I have worked hard to live up to this responsibility of governing the most important subnational economy in Africa. We certainly could not have done this by ourselves. Thank you to the Almighty God and all of Lagos. Immense gratitude goes to our great party, APC, and our President-Elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Thank you to the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, for your commitment to leaving a legacy of fairness and electoral outcomes that reflect the will of the people.

“Thank you to my wife, Ibijoke, my Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, and all fellow contestants for their contributions. Lagos has chosen competence and experience, on this march to true greatness.

“During the course of the campaign, we sadly saw a lot of divisive rhetoric used. Elections should be about capacity, competence, and experience, not ethnicity or religion.

“I salute those who refused to be divided by hateful and hurtful ethnic profiling. Recent skirmishes in some LGAs resulting in injuries are reprehensible and not reflective of who we are. Law enforcement and security agencies have been directed to ensure that those found culpable face the full wrath of the law.

“Very importantly, and this cannot be overemphasized: What unites us as Lagosians is far more important and substantial than whatever differences exist among us.

“As your Governor, I will do everything in my power to ensure that genuine healing takes place. We will continue to run an inclusive government, that delivers for all the people of Lagos, wherever in the State they may be living.

“The true Lagos spirit is a welcoming, embracing, liberal one, not a divisive, exclusionary one. In the days and weeks and months ahead, we will continue to do everything to demonstrate and amplify this.

“We must reaffirm the spirit of solidarity and togetherness that binds us as Lagosians.

“Our work will continue, and there will be no break. The dividends of democracy must continue to be delivered.

“Thank you once again dear Lagosians.

“Igbega Ipinle Eko, Ajumose Ni O!”

  • Ambode goes tough gives ‘danfos’ quit notice on Lagos roads

Ambode goes tough gives ‘danfos’ quit notice on Lagos roads

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Lagos State Governor on Monday vowed plans are up to remove yellow buses popularly known as ‘Danfo’ from Lagos roads for a more efficient, well-structured and world class mass transportation system that would ease movement within the city.

Governor Ambode also said that his administration would soon roll out a comprehensive environmental sanitation policy that would make the city to be clean without much burden on the people in terms of taxes. Speaking at the 14th Annual Lecture of the Centre for Values in Leadership (CVL) held at Muson Centre in Onikan with the theme: “Living Well Together, Tomorrow: The Challenge Of Africa’s Future Cities,” Governor Ambode admitted that the present connectivity mode in Lagos was not acceptable and befitting for a mega city and as such a well-structured transportation mode would soon be put in place to address the challenge.

“When I wake up in the morning and see all these yellow buses and see Okada and all kinds of tricycles and then we claim we are a mega city, that is not true and we must first acknowledge that that is a faulty connectivity that we are running.

“Having accepted that we have to look for the solution and that is why we want to banish yellow buses this year. We must address the issue of connectivity that makes people move around with ease and that is where we are going.

“For instance, people going from Ikorodu to CMS have started leaving their cars at home because the buses are very convenient and so why can’t we do that for other places? Yes, we don’t have the money to do that but we can go to the capital market and then improve on the technology of collection of fares and that will encourage investors and then the city will change,” Governor Ambode said.

The Governor said the government was also embarking on massive reform in waste management system, expressing optimism that the plan will fully be actualized by July this year. He said: “We are also embarking on massive reform in the waste and sanitation management system.

I don’t like the way the city is and the Private Sector Participants (PSP) collectors are not having enough capacity to do it but again should I tax people to death, the answer is no. I don’t want to tax people and so we need this partnership with the private sector so that they can invest in the sanitation management of the city and in no time maybe by July, the city will change forever.”

Ambode who recalled the massive infrastructures being put in place in critical sectors of the Lagos economy such as transport sector, road construction and rehabilitation, construction of lay-bys, and flyovers among others, said the main objective of his administration remained the growth of the Lagos economy from 5th to 3rd largest economy in Africa.

On power, Governor Ambode said the major issue had always been with transmission and advocated an embedded power initiative that would allow clusters of Independent Power Projects (IPP) to run the cities.

He said he had remained focused on some issues such as infrastructure, security, job creation, power, adoption of technology as an enabler and driving investment through ease of doing business. In his opening remarks, CVL founder and renowned development expert, Professor Pat Utomi said the idea behind the formation of the group was to get young people to begin to appreciate early what leadership was all about being service to the people.

Speaking on the theme of the symposium, Utomi said Lagos remained the best governed State in Nigeria in the last 18 years and a good example of what the country should be beyond and without oil.

He commended Governor Ambode on his leadership style and particularly congratulated Lagos for being named by the Rockefeller Foundation as one of the 100 most resilient cities in the world. Chairman of the occasion and former Governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke said the theme of the symposium was apt considering that Nigeria’s population by 2050 would have tripled and as such it was important for the country to start planning for livable cities.

He commended Governor Ambode over his achievements in office so far, saying that it was obvious that the Governor has been performing very well and he is a good example of continuity in governance. On his part, Director of Centre for African Economies, Oxford University, Professor Paul Collier said from his over thirty years experience of coming to Nigeria, Governor Ambode has proven himself to be the third excellent Governor in a row in Lagos. Collier, who was the keynote speaker, said judging by the population projection of Nigeria by 2050, now is the time for the country to start building its cities to conform to the modern trend. He said Nigeria’s oil had been a course which messed up the economy, and so there was need to start proper planning for development. As a way out, Collier suggested alliance between the business community and political actors, saying that to build a city that works, attention must be focused on energy and connectivity.

  • Gov. Ambode promises structured framework for entertainment

Gov. Ambode promises structured framework for entertainment

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Tuesday said he would create a structured framework to boost arts, tourism and entertainment in the state.

Ambode made the remark at the Lagos House, Ikeja when he played host to artistes who performed at the 2016 edition of the One Lagos Fiesta (OLF) held in five zones across the state in December.

He said that with a structured framework in place, the sector would increase the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

“This is an area I love, which is under-utilised for the societal development of Nigeria.

“I want a structured framework; I see no reason why you should be going abroad to shoot your music videos.

“I will love to see concerts where my artistes are not miming; give me a framework of how I can intervene,” Ambode said.

He urged the artistes to go back to the drawing board and work out ways of improving the industry and how the government could intervene.

Ambode, who traced his interest in the industry back to his days as the entertainment prefect at Federal Government College, Warri, said he believed that the creativity of youths in the state could be tapped into.

“We have a bulging youth dynamics in Lagos who are below the age bracket of 35 and they account for 66 percent of the state’s population.

“It means that there is an economy in that age bracket that the government has to look into,’’ he said.

According to him, the era of white collar job has gone and the only set of people that can actually run the future of a global economy are those who are creative and innovative.

Ambode, who noted that the OLF is a great measure to reduce crime in the state to the barest minimum, said he was looking forward to other areas of maximizing the potential in the industry.

Earlier in her welcome address, the state’s Acting Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Adebimpe Akinsola, commended all those who performed at the fiesta.

She said the state government had done well by creating the platform for them and upcoming ones to showcase their talents.

Speaking on behalf of other artistes, Adewale Ayuba and Tiwa Savage thanked Gov. Ambode for the rare opportunity given to both old and young musicians to perform at the fiesta.
