National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Tuesday during the APC governorship primary in Lagos state, said there is no rancour between him and incumbent Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Tinubu stated this while addressing newsmen after taking part in the exercise at his ward in Alausa, stressing that he considers the reports of a rancour between him and Ambode as an insult.
“Rancor between us? I will regard that as an insult. I brought Ambode to the people. He was a civil servant under me. He performed very well as a civil servant and when he showed interest in politics after the leadership, we gave him the opportunity. I introduced him to the party. The party accepted him, he became the governor.
“Now if the party now say they want either a change or they want to reaffirm the governorship through open exercise, and they elect him today, so be it. You will remain relevant as a leader if you submit yourself once in a while to what your people want,” Tinubu said.
The APC national leader describing the exercise to either change Ambode or reaffirm his governorship, said the massive turnout of APC members across the state is not his making, stressing that members of the party had come out en masse to choose their preferred candidate.
“It is a democracy day for us. Elections are supposed to be a celebration of democracy and we have tried to show the world and the Nigerians that we are democrats because democracy is present in us.
“What an open election means is elimination of corruption in any delegate system, transparency in the true sense of it so that the party faithful as you have seen them here- you can’t buy all these people, you cannot.
“This is the committed commitment to party supremacy. It is even beyond me as a leader. Whatever is happening today, I have to submit myself to the party wishes.
“This is what they want; they want the opponent. They want to participate… it’s a very difficult process but you’ve seen the people. And we the people is the preamble of every constitution, democratic constitution. And If that is so, people have been given their wish,” he said.

An Army officer at the Ojo Barracks, who preferred to be anonymous, also said that the fire outbreak started by 5.00 a.m, while he was preparing for duty.

Lagos Govt. moves to decongest prisons
The Lagos State Government is set to bring down the number of inmates awaiting trial in prisons across the State through the implementation of plea bargain aspect of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.
Speaking at Ikoyi Prison during a visit to create awareness on the initiative, the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, said the huge population of inmates in prisons across the State was of serious concern to the State Government, adding that there was dire need to implement initiatives such as the plea bargain concept to drastically reduce the figures.
Kazeem, who was represented by the State’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mrs. Titilayo Shitta-Bay, specifically encouraged the inmates who are guilty of alleged offences for which they are facing trial to embrace plea bargain and thereby save time as well as serve lesser punishment.
According to her, “Plea Bargain will help to reduce the punishment for inmates, save public funds and time, and that is the reason why the State Government is purposely using the initiative to also decongest prisons in the State.”
Giving details on how the initiative works, Shitta-Bay said an applicant for Plea Bargain has to state the reasons for his eligibility and it would then be considered only on merit and based on the seriousness of the offence for which the applicant is being prosecuted.
Speaking further, she said: “The lawyers would write their recommendations too and the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice would consider the facts of the matter and circumstances.”
In his response, the Comptroller in charge of Ikoyi Prison, DCP Tolu Ogunsakin commended the State Government for the proactive approach in decongesting prisons in the State, just as he advised inmates to make use of the wonderful initiative by the Attorney- General and Commissioner for Justice through the office of Director of Public Prosecutions.
Addressing the inmates, Ogunsakin said: “You have always been praying for freedom and Lagos State Government has brought you the opportunity to embrace it and confess to the crime that brought you to Prison instead of wasting your time and energy here”.
Aside Ikoyi Prison, the team also visited Kirikiri Female Prison, Kirikiri Medium Prison and Kirikiri Maximum Prison.

A software developer at Codefest Nigeria, Mr Victor Morgan, said that CVhub was looking forward to excelling.

Also, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, expressed regrets that rather than engage youths meaningfully, politicians had turned them to political thugs.
Obasa urged Nigerian youths to aspire for political positions rather than allowing themselves being used as thugs to foment violence during and after the elections.
“If anybody wants to use you, tell such politicians to bring his or her child. Do not allow yourself to be used.
“My advice to the youths is that you should show interest in politics because you are not too young to run,” he said.
Obasa promised to continue to promote the business of legislature in the interest of the people.
In his message, Sen. Gbenga Ashafa, (Lagos East), urged political office holders to keep to their electoral promises for the good of the people.
In his sermon, Alhaji Sulaimon Abou-Nolla, the Chief Imam of Lagos, who led the prayer, said that participation in election was a civic duty of every adult citizen in a democratic government.
Abou-Nolla urged every Muslim to get their Permanent Voter Cards to enable to participate in the forthcoming general elections.
He said: “’You must ensure that you vote. It is a duty and vote for a righteous and just leader that will bring a positive change not corruption for the people.
“We must also embrace peace and love for one another rather than killing. Life is sacred, do not kill for it is an unjust act.”
The cleric enjoined Muslims to imbibe the spirit of sacrifice in their daily activities as exemplified by Prophet Mohammed.
