  • Lagos safest city in Africa – Gov. Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday described the security of lives and property of residents as the biggest achievement of his administration in the last three years, saying it was gratifying to note that the State is now the safest in Africa.

Speaking at the commissioning of a Forward Operating Base (FOB) of the Nigerian Army in Epe, Governor Ambode said the combined investment of his administration in the security architecture of the State and efforts of security agencies had resulted in peaceful atmosphere for residents and visitors.

The Governor, who recalled the days of kidnapping, cultism and other security challenges in Ikorodu and Epe axis, said it was satisfying that the activities of criminal elements such as militants, among others had been confined to history in the State.

“As I mark my own three years in office tomorrow (Tuesday), I can say significantly that if there is anything that I have actually achieved in these three years is the security and safety of lives and property in Lagos State.

“There is no way that could have been possible and that is why I say it quietly and openly if not for the support and cooperation of all the security agencies and most significantly the efforts of the Nigerian Army which is actually hidden underground but visibly seen by everything that is going on here,” he said.

Recalling his early days in office, the Governor said his first major task was how to address kidnapping and other nefarious activities perpetrated by militants in Ishawo axis, adding that a Military Base was eventually set up as well as Military Operation code-named “Operation Awatse.”

“At the beginning, the issue of kidnapping and cultism was actually in this eastern axis between Epe and Ikorodu but with the efforts that we have seen and visible to all of us, it has become a thing of the past and we are very grateful to the Nigerian Army.

“I want to quickly recollect that my first task was the issue of kidnapping that was so notorious in area of Ishawo in Ikorodu and there and then, we had the support of the Nigerian Army to set up a small base and we had to also take over property of some of those militants to accommodate the Military Base,” he recalled.

He said crime rate had drastically reduced in the State, and that no efforts would be spared in sustaining the peace in the State.

“I must say the last three years have been very peaceful and everybody would agree that crime rate has reduced in Lagos. We need to sustain it because at the end of the day that is what really grows our GDP and that is what makes other people to want to come to Lagos and I can clearly and openly declare that Lagos right now is the safest city across Africa,” the Governor said.

While alluding to how former military barrack in Epe was closed, Governor Ambode described the commissioning of the FOB as historic and significant considering the fact that it was witnessed by traditional rulers and community leaders in the area, saying the development was a new dawn for community relationship with the Army in the axis.

Besides, the Governor lauded the General Officer Commanding in charge of 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Enobong Udoh for his steadfastness in promoting peace in the State, just as he reiterated commitment to continually support the Military and other security agencies in the State.

“I want to openly say I will support the second FOB that is coming up in Ikorodu and if there is any need for us to give further support for gunboat engines or infrastructure, you can count on us that we would support anything that will keep the lives and property of our people safe at all times.

“Our support for Operation Awatse is continual and we would support every other thing that is necessary and also beyond this, we would also support the welfare of all the security agencies that are operating in Lagos so that we can continue to have peace.

“What we are seeing is a new strategy to keep our outer spaces safer than ever before and we need the Military presence in Ikorodu, in Epe and all the outer spaces so that we can go away from the central protection and also make every other place in Lagos livable and also economically viable,” the Governor said.

Governor Ambode also commended the new initiative by the Nigerian Army to promote human security alongside national security, saying the State Government was solidly behind any initiative aimed at ensuring unity of the country.

Earlier in his remarks, Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Tukur Buratai commended Governor Ambode for the support to security agencies and the massive infrastructural development across the length and breadth of the State, saying the initiatives of the Governor were laudable.

“We really want to thank you (Governor Ambode) for the transformation and development going on in Lagos State.

“We acknowledge the transformation in Lagos and we say thank you,” Buratai said.

He said the FOB was set up to enhance security in the axis, and as well help to facilitate other military formations that would soon be moved to the area.

  • EFCC arrests Lagos alleged swindler ‘man of God’ in Enugu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a self acclaimed pastor, ThankGod Udechukwu, the founder of Jesus the General Outreach Ministry based in Lagos state.

TheNewsGuru reports Udechukwu, who hails from Ozalla, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State and had taken advantage of one of his kinsmen who trusted him as a ‘Man of God’, was arrested on Wednesday in the Southeastern state.

“I am his pastor and man of God, in fact, I used to pray for him to succeed and indeed, I prayed for him before he travelled out to Dubai,” the pastor boasted on his arrest.

Apparently with this ‘Messiah’ mindset, the self-styled minister of God set out to rip-off his victim using lies, half-truths and manipulations, according to the EFCC.

According to the victim and complainant who resides in Dubai, United Arab Emirate, his traumatic ordeals in the hands of Udechukwu started with a suggestion that he hands over four Highlander SUVs he imported to him, claiming that one of his church members was willing to buy the vehicles and other consignments imported with them all of which amounted to N16,000,000.00.

After waiting for a while for the remittance of the monies realized from the sale, the Pastor having taken a huge sum from the total amount realized claiming they were for logistic purposes, muted the idea of starting a transport services business and suggested buying two Sienna buses. As if, under a spell, the complainant still agreed to the business idea.

Again, with nothing coming out of the transport business, the complainant said he was no more interested in the venture and instructed the suspect to sell off the two buses. Udechukwu sold one of the buses and converted the proceed to his personal use.

Some months after, the pastor further suggested a business to the complainant and introduced him to one Amechi Chuks Amechi who claimed to work with Nigeria Breweries and that he could assist in securing a dealership from the company.

The matter is presently under further investigations.

Best graduating student… WAEC and NECO results dotted with F9s

In his speech, Governor Ambode promised to sponsor in his post-graduate programme, and also gifted the sum of N5 million to, Mr. Adetoro Ogunsanya, who emerged the best graduating student from the 2016/2017 session with a Cumulative Grade Point Aggregate (CGPA) of 4.7 from the Department of Business Administration.

Ambode, who said he was impressed by Ogunsanya’s performance at the 22nd Convocation and Award of degrees by the university to its graduating students, noted that the state government had stopped offering scholarships to students, but was only giving them bursaries.

He enthused that his coming to the university on the first day of the convocation was divine.

“There is a divine side to the story of the best graduating student, maybe I choose to come today because of the best graduating student.

“The visitor to the university usually attends the higher degree ceremony of the convocations.

“But I will adopt the best graduating student because his story is too compelling and reflect on my story,” Ambode said.

Ogunsanya, the best graduating student, narrated his first WAEC and NECO examination results were dotted with F9s due to health challenges.

According to him, the health challenge, cataract he inherited from his father, greatly affected his performance in the final examination in secondary school.

He said the cataract, which initially affected one eye, later spread to the other and this affected his academic performance.

“My Parents helped me to seek medical help but the first operation I had was not successful.

“When my first WAEC and NECO came out, it was dotted with F9s, so I left home and went to stay with my uncle and his wife.

“My uncle and his wife also helped me to seek medical treatment at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan and the operation was successful,” he said.

Ogunsanya said following the treatment, he went back to secondary school to rewrite his WAEC and JAMB, after three years of staying at home.

“I was able to make four A’s and three B’s and scored 215 in JAMB to gain admission to LASU,: Ogunsanya recalled.

According to him, he had applied for Accounting at LASU but opted for business administration giving reasons Accounting was not accredited at the time.

Ogunsanya noted that his academic journey was rigorous and herculean, even as he lost his father in 2015.

“But my doggedness and tenacity yielded a good result,” he added, while also requesting that he should be given scholarship for his master’s programme in the United Kingdom.

In response Governor Ambode said “I will personally sponsor him to any university of his choice in the world and as the best graduating student, I am giving him a gift of N5million”.

    LASU VC’s remarks

In his remarks, Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun, the Vice-Chancellor, said the graduating students had been well tutored and certified to succeed in the corporate world.

The VC, however, urged the students to be good ambassadors of the institution and give back to their Alma Mata.

Fagbohun said the university graduated 29,710 students for the session, out of which 26 students made First Class division.

He said 21,481 students graduated with first degrees, 201 with diplomas, 7,982 in the Post-graduate cadre and 46 PhDs.

Secured for users: Watch out for Lagos free public Wi-Fi

Mr Hakeem Fahm, Lagos State Commissioner for Science and Technology, has said that the free public Wi-Fi at the state’s Parks and Gardens was secured by Wireless Protected Access (WPA).

Fahm made this known on Friday in Lagos at the 2018 Ministerial Press Briefing in commemoration of the third year in office of Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode.

WPA, which is a security standard for users of computing devices equipped with wireless internet connection, provides sophisticated data encryption and better user authentication.

Fahm said that Lagos residents had begun to have access to the free Wi-Fi provided by the state government at three selected parks and gardens.

He said that the Wi-Fi access at the Ndubuisi Kanu Park, Ikeja, Muri-Okunola Park, Victoria Island and Johnson JakandeTinubu Park Ikeja, were using solar-powered panels to avoid disruption.

“This project represents a quick-win for Lagos State Government towards the vision of making Lagos a smart city, and provides new ways for public to enhance social and leisure activities.

“The government has plans to provide additional Wi-Fi access at bus terminals and other parks and gardens and schools,’’ he said

“Wi-Fi can be anywhere now once funding is in place because we have the infrastructure already.

“We are ready to work with any agency; we are talking to different partners to see how we can further deploy it and look at the value added services available.

“To make sure that the wireless would pay for itself, we are in discussion with Google so that the Wi-Fi we are providing can assist us in placing advert so that it can be used to pay for the advert.”

Lagos State Muslim pilgrims board to refund N30m to 2017 pilgrims

The Lagos State Muslims Pilgrims Welfare Board says it will on May 9 commence the refund of N30 million to pilgrims from the state who performed the 2017 Hajj.

Mr Musbau Okoya, Executive Secretary of the board, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.

He, however, said that the 2017 pilgrims whom were indebted to the state one way or another were not entitled to the refund.

Okoya urged intending pilgrims for the 2018 Hajj to ensure that they registered for the National Identity Card, as it had been made a prerequisite for Hajj.

“The national identity card is now a requirement for intending pilgrims. I urge them to register for the identity card early enough to enable them to go for the Hajj,” he said.

He assured that the State was committed to ensuring comfort for its pilgrims, and urged the faithful to always avoid acts that would affect the spiritual essence of the pilgrimage.

He also urged them to take advantage of the Hajj lectures which had commenced in selected locations in the state to build their faith and to be more knowledgeable about the true essence of the Hajj.

But now seeing this, I now started to say to myself that Governor Ambode has placed the name Gani Fawehinmi on a global map,” Mohammed said.
