Truck falls from bridge, crushes commercial buses in Lagos

Tragedy was narrowly averted on Saturday when a fully loaded truck skidded off the Pen Cinema Bridge in the Agege area of Lagos, crashing into two stationary commercial buses below.

According to the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, the truck lost control while navigating the bridge and veered off, leading to the fall.

The driver of the truck sustained severe fractures to both hands but was rescued by LASTMA officials who responded promptly to the scene.

Following the rescue, the injured driver was handed over to officers of the Elere Police Division and subsequently taken to the General Hospital, Ile-Epo, for urgent medical care.

Adebayo said LASTMA’s personnel acted swiftly to cordon off the area, divert traffic, and prevent further accidents.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit later cleared the wreckage, allowing normal traffic flow to resume on the busy Old Abeokuta Road axis.

Preliminary inquiries suggest that the truck driver, who suffered grievous fractures to both hands, lost control of the vehicle while navigating the Pen Cinema Bridge. Consequently, the truck plunged from the bridge, landing upon the two commercial buses stationed beneath,” Adebayo said in a statement.

Popular musician, Terry Apala remanded in Lagos prison

Nigerian musician, Terry Alexander Ejeh, popularly known as Terry Apala, has been remanded in a correctional centre for alleged mutilation of the Naira notes.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Terry Apala was arraigned by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday.

The popular musician was arraigned before Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos on a one-count charge of mutilating the Naira notes.

The charge reads: “That you, TERRY ALEXANDER EJEH, on the 5th day of January, 2025, at La Madison Place, Oniru, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, whilst dancing during a social event, tampered with Naira notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by marching on the same and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.”

TNG reports Terry Apala pleaded not guilty to the offence when it was read to him.

In view of his plea, the prosecution counsel, S.I. Suleiman, prayed for a trial date and also urged the court to remand him in a correctional centre.

The defence counsel, Felix Nwabuda, informed the court of a bail application dated April 23, 2025 and prayed the court for a short date for the hearing of the application.

“Whilst praying the court for a short date for the hearing of the bail application, I will be craving the indulgence of the court to release the defendant to the defence.

“We undertake to produce him in court. He will not evade hearing. He came in from the United Kingdom on April 23, 2025; and on the invitation of the EFCC, he came on his own,” Nwabuda argued before the court.

The prosecution counsel, however, opposed the application, saying, “the application is alien and unheard of.

“I urge the court to afford us the opportunity to look at the application and respond properly so that the court can make a well -informed ruling”.

In a short ruling, Justice Aluko refused the application of the defence.

He then adjourn till May 5, 2025 and ordered the remand of the defendant in the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending the determination of the bail application.

Boko Haram in Lagos: Police open up over reported arrest of suspects

The Police Command in Lagos State has debunked a publication in some newspapers dated April 17, 2025 asserting that hundreds of Boko Haram suspects have been apprehended in Lagos.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin refuted this in a statement on Friday in Lagos.

He said that following the publication, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Olohundare Jimoh, directed an immediate investigation into the report to ascertain the true position of the claim.

“The outcome of the investigation reveals that there is nowhere throughout Lagos State that the group mentioned in the report – Boko Haram – were seen or sighted or arrested.

“Furthermore, in the trailer park communities mentioned, the leaders, operators, and drivers in the indicated places in the report clarified to the police that there were no such elements of Boko Haram seen or arrested in those localities.

“The command, notwithstanding, deployed surveillance police detectives, the Lagos State Police Intelligence Department (SID), and other formations of the Force to the mentioned places for the purpose of verification of the claim.

Hundeyin enjoined residents to disregard and discountenance the write-up as untrue and a figment of the imagination of the writer which was very unfortunate and despicable and should be outrightly ignored.

“Members of the public are encouraged by the Commissioner of Police to go about their duties and other means of livelihood without fear or apprehension, ” he said.

  • FG sheds light on 1,028km Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway

FG sheds light on 1,028km Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway

The Federal Government has clarified on the ongoing six-lane Lagos-Badagry Road project in relation to the proposed Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs Olukorede Kesha, made the clarification in an interview on Thursday.

According to Kesha, Nigeria’s side of  the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway Development Project is a 79km stretch starting from  Eric Moore in Lagos State and ending at Seme Border.

That road is about 79km from Eric Moore  to the border of Nigeria at Seme,’’ Kesha said.

She said that the Lagos-Badagry Expressway  formed part of the Abidjan-Lagos  Corridor Highway.

“The existing project on Lagos-Badagry Expressway is a project of the Federal Government of Nigeria.  For clarity purposes, that road is about 79km, from Eric Moore.”

According to Kesha, the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor  Highway  is 1,028km.

The federal controller of works said that the 46.2km section of the  Nigerian side of the highway project – from Agbara to Seme –  had been awarded to a contractor by the Federal Government.

She said that  the Okokomaiko to Agbara section was being overseen by the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency.

She added that the Eric Moore to Igbo Elerin section, a 10km stretch, was being handled by the Lagos State Government.

Kesha noted that the original vision for the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway was a homogeneous 10-lane  road with provisions for train and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems.

She said: “I wouldn’t know whether that is still subsisting because it looks like they are looking into that again and having to tell each member-country to do its own.

“What we are doing now may still stay. It may just have an extension, because what we are doing now are three lanes with no service lanes.

“They may add to it, service lanes, and they may add provisions for  light rail and  BRT corridors so that  natives of communities that this road transverses can have  the opportunity to board and drop by, using the corridors provided for light rail and BRT.”

She added that light rail and BRT corridors could be incorporated to serve communities on the route.

She told NAN that the  right of way of the proposed highway was about 120 metres.

She said that the highway project was still in its design phase.

The design phase will be completed in May after which the construction would begin.

Recall that the Federal Ministry of Works had in March held a stakeholder engagement with the armed forces, police, para military and border communities on the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway Development Project of the ECOWAS Commission, at Seme Border.

The engagement began at Agbara, where  royal fathers, youths, community leaders and others engaged the ECOWAS Commission and the Federal Ministry of Works officials.

  • Speakership position: Court ruling excites Obasa

Speakership position: Court ruling excites Obasa

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has hailed a court ruling overturning his removal as “illegal, unconstitutional and null and void.”

Obasa expressed this in a statement issued in Lagos on Wednesday, shortly after the judgement was delivered.

Justice Yetunde Pinheiro of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, gave the ruling on Wednesday.

The court declared Obasa’s removal during an official trip to the United States illegal, unconstitutional, and without legal standing.

It also nullified all proceedings and resolutions made by the Assembly on Jan. 13, the day of his removal.

Reacting, Obasa said the judgement would encourage Assembly members to move forward with unity and renewed purpose.

He said: “This is a victory for the Lagos State House of Assembly as an institution, and for both present and future members.

“The court’s decision today further strengthens our resolve to advance together in unity as lawmakers.

“We remain committed to working in harmony, for the benefit of our constituents, Lagos State, and Nigeria as a whole,” he said.

The Speaker urged fellow lawmakers to move past the events and embrace peace, unity, and collaboration.

Recall that Obasa filed a suit on Feb. 12 through his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), challenging the legality of his removal.

He argued the Assembly was on recess and he was abroad, making the session used to remove him invalid and unauthorised.

Obasa maintained that the session lacked proper authority or a formal delegation of power from the Speaker’s office.

He listed the House of Assembly and Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, as defendants in the suit.

His legal challenge was based on nine grounds, citing the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Assembly Standing Orders.

The court’s decision voids all actions taken during the Assembly session held on Jan. 13.
