The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, made the appeal in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

“The Lagos State Government has announced the commencement of the second phase of extensive rehabilitation works on the Ogudu-Ifako Bridge in Kosofe Local Government Area, following the successful completion and reopening of the first phase.

“This second phase, which entails the holistic restoration of the bridge’s expansion joints inbound Lagos Island, is scheduled to extend from Aug. 19 through Oct. 1.

“Conscious of the attendant implications for vehicular circulation, government has meticulously designed traffic diversions that will mitigate disruption and sustain commuter convenience,” he said.

Bakare-Oki disclosed that motorists commuting along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway/Lagos Toll Gate axis inbound Oshodi and Victoria Island would be subjected to a controlled diversion at the Ogudu-Ifako Bridge.

He said that, in this regard, vehicular traffic would be streamlined into a single lane approximately 50 metres before the designated work zone, with full access restored 50 metres beyond the construction site.

He said that motorists destined for Oshodi could advantageously use the Ojota Slip Road, seamlessly linking to Ikorodu Road inbound Anthony (by Taxi Park).

“Motorists bound for Victoria Island may conveniently divert through Ojota Slip Road, merging onto Ikorodu Road inbound to Anthony (by Town Planning Way), then connecting to Gbagada and accessing the Third Mainland Bridge inbound to Lagos Island.

“An additional alternative exists via Ikorodu Road inbound to Funsho Williams Avenue, affording direct ingress to Eko Bridge en route to Lagos Island,” he said.

He advised motorists originating from Ikeja and adjoining precincts to traverse through Maryland, connect with Ikorodu Road/Funsho Williams Avenue, and thereafter proceed via Eko Bridge to Outer Marina and adjoining corridors.

“Alternatively, they may link Ikorodu Road inbound Anthony (by Taxi Park) to Oshodi and pursue their onward destinations,” he said.

He appealed for the unwavering cooperation of road users, stressing that strict adherence to the traffic advisory and full compliance with the directives of LASTMA personnel were essential for maintaining order during the rehabilitation exercise.

Bakare-Oki disclosed that mini and heavy-duty towing apparatus, together with other requisite road infrastructure, had been strategically stationed along diversion routes and critical intersections within the metropolis.

“This will promptly address breakdowns, vehicular mishaps or other exigencies, while also guiding motorists appropriately,” he said.

  • Lagos Assembly moves to slash tenancy agency fees by half

Lagos Assembly moves to slash tenancy agency fees by half

The Lagos State House of Assembly says Section 3(4) of the new Tenancy Bill will reduce agency or commission fees from 10 to five per cent of annual rent.

The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, disclosed this during a one-day public hearing on Wednesday at the Assembly complex.

The bill is titled ‘A Bill for a Law to Regulate the Relationship Between Landlords and Tenants’

Obasa, represented by member Stephen Ogundipe, said any agent collecting more than five per cent commits an offence punishable by refund, two years’ imprisonment, or a fine of ₦1 million.

He said landlords’ and estate agents’ activities regarding service charges had become worrisome and a cause for concern.

The bill, he noted, will provide a framework for tenancy agreements, rent payment, property maintenance, and the process for recovery of premises.

According to him, the bill allows agitations and opinions to be incorporated to produce vibrant legislation capable of standing the test of time.

Obasa revealed Lagos’ housing deficit had risen by 15 per cent, from 2.95 million units in 2016 to 3.4 million units in 2025.

He explained that over 70 per cent of Lagos residents are renters, with many spending 40 to 60 per cent of their income on rent.

Chairman of the House Committee on Housing, Olusegun Ege, said the hearing allowed stakeholders and the public to give inputs on the proposed law.

Ege described stakeholder consultation as an essential legislative process that could promote progressive governance.

He said the bill has four parts, 45 clauses, and addresses rights, obligations, tenancy agreements, rent payments, and dispute resolution procedures.

According to him, the bill outlines clear eviction procedures to protect tenants from arbitrary evictions, important for stability, especially for families and small businesses.

It encourages mediation as the first dispute resolution step, saving both parties time and money compared to prolonged court proceedings.

The bill also seeks to curb unreasonable rent increases, simplify processes, and shorten litigation periods in illegal eviction cases.

Provisions include virtual hearings, weekend and public holiday proceedings, and electronic filing to fast-track justice delivery.

State Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, stressed the bill’s role in boosting investment confidence.

State Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, highlighted its potential to resolve tenancy cases within six months.

Pedro said this would prevent defaulting tenants or landlords from misusing court processes.

Professional bodies, however, raised concerns over the five per cent agency fee limit, saying it conflicts with established professional charges.

Representatives of the Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria urged a review to align the bill with existing regulations.

Stakeholders discussed the bill’s social impact, the need for dedicated tenancy courts, and possible state-led housing projects to reduce market pressure.

The hearing attracted government officials, legal practitioners, estate surveyors, civil society groups, and community representatives, reflecting the bill’s wide-ranging economic and social impact.

“Upon  his arrest, the suspect, who was scheduled to  travel on Emirates Airline to Dubai, claimed he had only 10,000 dollars on him.

“However, when a search was conducted on him, a sum of 49,000 dollars was discovered undeclared, totaling 59,000 dollars,” he said.

The Area Comptroller in charge of the NCS at the Airport, Effiong Harrison, while handing over to the EFCC, decried failure of travellers to comply with the currency declaration law.

“Today, we are having a process that we have been doing  over a period of time now.

“When we intercept currencies, we do the needful of handing over to the appropriate agencies of government,” Harrison said.

According to him, sustained sensitization and announcements are being made at relevant airports on the need for travellers to declare their currencies or equivalents.

“Also, the electronic signages in the halls display these messages.  Yet, at intervals, we also have people who fail to adhere to the extant laws and regulations,” he said.

On his part while receiving the suspect, the acting Zonal Director, Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, EFCC, Assistant Commander Ahmed Ghali, said the commission would continue to enforce the law.

“We are here to take over one of the recalcitrant Nigerians who do not want to abide with the law in relation to money laundering.

“We will not relent in enforcing the law.   All that we are saying is that laws are meant to be obeyed.

“We will always do our best, in line with our mandate, to ensure that any individual who violates the law does not go scot free,” Ghali said.
