Lagos reveals plans to host world-class data centre

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Thursday announced plans to extend the state’s fibre-optic network by an additional 1,200 kilometers in 2025, complementing the existing 2,500 kilometers.

Sanwo-Olu said this at the sixth edition of the Art of Technology Lagos Conference, which had the theme, “AI and the Lagos Digital Economy.”

The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, said the state also had plans to host world-class data centres in Lagos within the next 24 months.

According to Sanwo-Olu, these projects will provide the backbone for scalable, innovative solutions, and further solidify Lagos’ position as Africa’s leading technology hub.

He noted that Lagos was not just Nigeria’s economic nerve centre, but also Africa’s leading technology hub, accounting for over 60 per cent of Nigeria’s tech startups.

The governor highlighted the state’s achievements in the tech space, including the raising of over 1.2 billion dollars by Lagos-based startups in 2023, which accounted for 75 per cent of all startup investments in Nigeria.

Sanwo-Olu said these achievements were as a result of deliberate policies and investments that had created an enabling environment for innovation to thrive.

He said over 450 smart cameras under the Safe City Project would improve public safety and traffic management, as well as the Lagos Digital Service Platform.

“The platform is a transformative tool that embodies the state’s vision of accessible, transparent, and efficient governance.

“These projects are not just about infrastructure, they are about empowering our people and driving sustainable development across sectors.

“Our digitisation efforts are revolutionising governance.

“Fourteen government agencies have already digitised citizen-facing services, ensuring greater transparency, efficiency, and accessibility.

“With the Enterprise Architecture Project, we are harmonising data systems to prepare for AI-driven service delivery.

“This innovation will ensure faster responses and smoother interactions between citizens and government,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu added that the Lagos digital service platform would bridge the gap between government and the people, fostering trust and delivering impactful results.

He also highlighted the state’s commitment to sustainability, noting that the Lagos State Science, Research, and Innovation Council (LASRIC) had supported over 65 startups and 75 research projects across Lagos.

The governor said it had supported these startups with a commitment of 1 billion Naira to innovation funding in 2024.

He said further that the digital leap programme also aimed at training 50,000 Lagos residents in cutting-edge skills such as Artificial Intelligence, cybersecurity, coding, and cloud computing.

Sanwo-Olu emphasised the importance of collaboration in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.

He called on policymakers, educators, entrepreneurs, and innovators to work together to create a Lagos where technology transformed lives and every resident felt the impact of innovation.

Sanwo-Olu noted that together, residents could build a Lagos that worked for all, driven by innovation, powered by people, and guided by purpose.

The Art of Technology Lagos Conference is a flagship event that celebrates the state’s collective ambition to position Lagos as the digital heartbeat of Africa.

  • Lagos govt tackles block moulders over incessant building collapse

Lagos govt tackles block moulders over incessant building collapse

The Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) has urged block moulders and other stakeholders in the built environment to prioritise quality over cost to avoid building collapse.

The General Manager of LSMTL, Mrs Olayinka Abdul, gave the advice at a grassroots advocacy forum against building collapse, on Wednesday.

It was organised by the Building Collapse Prevention Guild, Ayobo-Ipaja Cell, for block moulders, in Lagos.

The forum had the theme, “Maintaining the Quality of Sandcrete Blocks in an Environment Fraught with Volatile Production Costs’’.

Abdul said that prioritising quality over cost in the construction industry would ensure the safety and durability of structures, especially in an environment with fluctuating material costs.

“The rising challenges in our industry reflects a critical juncture where we must reaffirm our commitment not only to quality, but to the safety and integrity of the structures which we build.

“As we gather here, we are united in a common purpose, to mitigate the risks that contribute to building collapse, while promoting sustainable practices in construction.

“The statistics of building collapse are alarming. Building collapses not only lead to loss of lives, but also represent significant economic costs, community trauma, and a breach of the trust our society places on us as builders and enforcers of safety,’’ she said.

Abdul said that LSMTL was committed to playing a vital role in maintaining the quality of sandcrete blocks and promoting sustainable construction practices in Lagos State.

Sandcrete blocks are a type of building material made from a mixture of cement, sand, and water, commonly used in construction for building walls and partitions.

She explained that sandcrete blocks had played a crucial role in the structural integrity of buildings due to their affordability, availability and versatility.

She said that the quality of these blocks had directly influenced the safety and durability of building structures.

Abdul said, “ When we compromise on quality, whether due to the rush of production, substandard materials, or cost-cutting measures, the repercussions can be dire.

“The production of sandcrete blocks is heavily influenced by the cost of raw materials, labour, and logistics.

`In an environment characterised by fluctuating prices, it is easy to see how some producers may be tempted to prioritise cost over quality.

“Yet, it is precisely in these challenging times that we must reaffirm our commitment to maintaining and enhancing the quality of our products.’’

The GM outlined several strategies for maintaining the quality of construction materials, particularly in the face of fluctuating costs and availability.

She suggested strategies such as, looking for alternative materials that could meet quality standards without significantly increasing costs, investing in sustainable materials, and collaboration with local suppliers to reduce costs and improve access to materials.

Mr Adesegun Banjoko, National President, National Association of Block Moulders of Nigeria (NABMON), called on LSMTL and other regulatory agencies, such as SON, to collaborate with the association to improve the quality of sandcrete blocks.

He expressed concern that the regulatory agencies might not have the necessary resources to adequately oversee and enforce quality standards.

Banjoko said that the association, with its extensive reach across Nigeria, especially in Lagos State, was well-positioned to support regulatory efforts by identifying and overseeing block producers.

He said the association had issued digital ID cards to its members, which could be used to verify their legitimacy and identify quacks.

  • FBI implicates popular Lagos celebrity as court seizes his iPhone

FBI implicates popular Lagos celebrity as court seizes his iPhone

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Tuesday admitted as evidence the iPhone of the social media celebrity, Ismaila Mustapha (alias Mompha) charged with six billion naira money laundering.

Mustapha, still at large, is standing trial alongside his company, Ismalob Global Investment Ltd., on eight counts bordering on money laundering.

Musa Idi, the sixth prosecution witness, in the continuation of his evidence-in-chief, on Tuesday told the court that the iPhone was duly taken for forensic analysis by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Idi, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), while being led in evidence by Mr Suleiman Suleiman, said that fraudulent documents were printed out from the phone.

Suleiman confirmed to the court that the iPhone was obtained during the course of the investigation. He, thereafter, sought to tender the iPhone as an evidence before the court.

Mompha’s Counsel, Mr Kolawole Salami, objected to the tendering of the iPhone as an exhibit. Salami argued that no proper foundation was laid, as no certificate was tendered with the phone.

The court then asked the defence counsel if he did not listen to what the witness said.

The prosecutor, in his response to the defence, argued that the contention that there was no provision of the Evidence Act posed no issue.

“We urge your lordship to discountenance the submission of the defence and admit the documents in evidence,” Suleiman said.

Justice Mojisola Dada, in a short ruling,  overruled the objection and upheld the arguments of the prosecution. Dada admitted the iPhone in evidence and marked it as exhibit P7.

The witness had on July 1 narrated to the court how he came across  Mompha and his company during the investigation.

He said the commission received an intelligent information from FBI that Mompha and his company led a cybercrime in the United States of America.

At the last adjourned date, two documents, the statement of first defendant and an asset declaration were admitted in evidence and labeled exhibits p5 and p6.

The court adjourned the case until Jan. 3 ,2025 for continuation of trial.

The law would lay a robust foundation for economic growth, fostering industrial growth, improved quality of life, energy equity, economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability.

The Electricity Act enables sub-national governments to generate and distribute electricity.

Before signing of the bill, Lagos electricity bill had a demand of about 12,000 megawatts (MW), which is about 90 per cent of the current national installed 13,000MW capacity.

The current 4,000MW being targeted by the government is only 13.33 per cent of the actual needs of the commercial city.
