Tension as police raise alarm of attacks, reprisals by cult groups in Lagos

The Police Command in Lagos State says it has uncovered plans by some cult groups to launch attacks and reprisals on July 7, sparking concern and tension in the State.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Olohundare Jimoh, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin.

He noted that July 7 is often marked by chaos, mayhem, and killings among rival cult groups, often involving violent reprisals.

He assured residents of strong commitment to maintaining maximum security during the Cult Day celebration on Monday [today].

The Commissioner of Police said the command is fully prepared, with personnel mobilised to apprehend and prosecute any cultists before violence can erupt.

He added that Anti-Cultism Squads, Special Tactical Squads, Police Mobile Force, Intelligence Department, and other special units have all been mobilised.

According to him, preventive and detective strategies are already implemented to ensure cultists do not disrupt the state’s peace.

He said security operatives have been deployed across the state to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors.

“Based on credible intelligence, some cult groups plan to launch attacks and reprisals on July 7,” Jimoh warned.

He stressed that the police have put robust measures in place to prevent any such violent activity.

“The command is fully prepared to maintain law and order,” Jimoh said, adding no group would be allowed to breach the peace.

Acting on intelligence, he said the police raided cult hideouts in Mushin on Sunday, arresting 52 suspected cultists.

Jimoh said the suspects were apprehended while preparing for violent attacks and are currently in police custody.

He stated that the suspects will be charged to court at the conclusion of investigations.

The CP also warned hotel owners and recreational facility managers against harbouring cult activities.

He said such establishments must not allow their premises to be used for cult meetings or violent gatherings.

“Violators will face the full weight of the law,” Jimoh warned.

The CP also urged parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against cultism and related crimes.

He stated that the consequences of engaging in cult activities are severe and offenders will be prosecuted.

Jimoh held an operational meeting on Sunday with commanders of Anti-Cultism and Tactical Units at the Command Headquarters.

He charged them to ensure no cult group disturbs the peace or causes harm in any part of the state.

“The command’s crime prevention and detective units remain on high alert and committed to protecting all residents,” he said.

Jimoh encouraged residents to continue their lawful activities without fear or intimidation.

He urged the public to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or via 08063299264 and 08065154338.

  • FG to spend N17bn on Lagos bridge damaged by fire

FG to spend N17bn on Lagos bridge damaged by fire

The Federal Government has successfully negotiated the cost of the Iddo Bridge rehabilitation from an initial N27 billion to N17 billion.

The Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, made this known to journalists during an inspection of the bridge on Friday in Lagos.

He said: “Julius Berger quoted, I think, N27 billion or thereabout, but after much negotiation and discussion, we now arrived at N17 billion.”

Umahi commended Julius Berger Nig. Plc. for demonstrating a sense of cooperation under its new leadership.

He described the company as a “born-again Berger”, attributing the breakthrough in negotiation to the understanding and openness of its new managing director.

The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to prudent spending, insisting that all contractors must align with the ministry’s standards and directives.

Umahi noted that the project had been reviewed from mere rehabilitation of the burnt section to a major work.

He expressed concern over the poor condition of the bridge, blaming it on years of neglect and human abuse, including illegal occupation and collisions by heavy-duty trucks.

He said that three spans of the bridge were severely damaged by fire, which he attributed to activities of illegal occupants who had built makeshift homes under the bridge.

“They brought in chemicals, built block walls and set up homes. Then, they set up fire that burnt the bridge and damaged three spans. Now we are going to fix the bridge completely,” Umahi said.

The minister said the Iddo Bridge, now with a headroom of about 4.5 metres, had suffered significant structural damage due to continuous hits from trucks and illegal structures beneath it.

He announced that the ministry would be creating a headroom of at least 5.6 metres.

He said that the Federal Ministry of Works was committed to restoring the bridge for the safety of all Nigerians and ensuring such incidents would not occur again.

On the issue of displaced persons, the minister said that no one would be allowed to return under the bridge.

“Nobody will stay under Iddo Bridge again as long as I remain  the Minister of Works.

“The lives of the people are more important,” he said.

He warned that the government would no longer tolerate any abuse of national infrastructure.

  • Man escapes death as Truck crushes minivan in Lagos

Man escapes death as Truck crushes minivan in Lagos

A man narrowly escaped death on Saturday morning when a container truck crushed a Toyota Sienna minivan along the Idi-Iroko inbound Maryland axis of Ikorodu Road, Lagos.

Adebayo Taofiq, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), disclosed that the accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. after the truck suffered a brake failure while moving at high speed, causing the driver to lose control.

The container it was carrying detached and toppled onto the minivan, completely crushing it.

Officials from LASTMA, who responded swiftly to emergency calls, led a late-night rescue operation.

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was miraculously rescued alive and immediately treated by personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

“The LASTMA midnight surveillance and rescue unit responded swiftly to distress calls. Upon arrival, officers employed an array of high-grade rescue apparatus and executed a painstaking extraction operation.

“Their valiant and highly synchronized efforts led to the miraculous rescue of a male occupant who had been pinned within the wreckage of the minivan and was treated by Operatives of LASAMBUS,” Adebayo said in a statement.

However, the driver of the truck fled the scene, reportedly fearing mob attack or prosecution under the assumption that the accident was fatal.

The mangled minivan was later towed to the Anthony Police Station, while the truck and its dislodged container were impounded and moved to LASTMA’s operational headquarters for further investigation.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, praised the rescue team for their swift response.

Bakare-Oki called on all truck drivers and operators to adhere strictly to safety standards and traffic regulations to prevent similar occurrences.

“This deeply distressing incident highlights, yet again, the perilous consequences of mechanical laxity, reckless driving, and habitual speeding on our thoroughfares.

“We therefore issue an urgent appeal to all truck operators to uphold the highest safety standards and adhere strictly to extant traffic regulations to forestall further avoidable disasters,” he said.

Bakare-Oki also wished the rescued victim a speedy recovery.

  • Single-use plastics: Lagos to intensify raids in markets

Single-use plastics: Lagos to intensify raids in markets

The Lagos State Government (LASG) says it will intensify raids and enforcement of the ban on Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) below 40 microns in major markets and stores statewide.

The KAI Corps Marshal, retired Major Olatunbosun Cole, made this known during a two-day enforcement operation at Bolade Market, Oshodi, and Ojuwoye Market in Mushin.

Cole said the ban is aimed at reducing plastic pollution and providing a lasting solution to flooding in the metropolis.

He advised traders and end-users to adopt reusable plastics, warning that the enforcement campaign would be continuous until the desired goals are achieved.

“Today is the day two of the enforcement, Yesterday we were at Alakoro Market in Lagos Island. This morning, we visited Bolade Market at Oshodi, and now we are at Ojuwoye market at Mushin.

“Traders should ensure they only sell plastics that are not less than 40 microns for the betterment of all.

“The enforcement team confiscated SUPs, including plastic cutlery, straws, lightweight nylons, disposable cups, and plates, during the operation carried out at Alakoro Market, Lagos Island on the first day.

“The ban was first announced in January 2024, with an 18-month moratorium given to producers to develop alternatives before enforcement commenced on July 1, 2025.

“The state government had engaged with stakeholders, including manufacturers, restaurants, and food services associations, to sensitise them on the ban,” he said.

Cole stressed that SUPs often end up in oceans and lagoons, causing pollution and harm to aquatic life and humans.

“The enforcement operation is part of the state’s efforts to mitigate the environmental and health impacts of single-use plastics,” he said.

Gov Sanwo-Olu rallies APC ahead of Lagos LG election

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Wednesday said the ruling APC would not concede any ground to opposition parties in the July 12 council elections.

He made this statement while urging party leaders and members to mobilise voters at the APC Lagos West 1 Senatorial District Mega Rally held in Ifako-Ijaiye.

Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, charged stakeholders to work hard and prevent the opposition from winning any seat in the 57 councils.

He said: “We are a party of the people, delivering democratic dividends. We are proud of our achievements and must continue the good work.

“Let us unite and support our candidates. This will help us secure victory again in 2027 for APC across Lagos State.

“We are here to mobilise votes for July 12. Our target is to win all 57 LGs and LCDAs and the 376 councillorship seats.

“We are not giving away any inch. This is our territory. Let us claim what belongs to us through collective effort and resolve.”

Sanwo-Olu urged members to make President Bola Tinubu and the APC proud by ensuring overwhelming victories across the councils during the upcoming elections.

He said the President had implemented significant reforms aimed at securing a better future and addressing longstanding national challenges.

“APC is performing at federal, state, and local levels. We should proudly promote what the APC is achieving. Let us mobilise and secure victory in all councils.

“We are the only credible party in Lagos and our performance speaks for us. We shall not allow our party to be embarrassed.

“Let us enlighten our people about the good works of our party and the efforts of the President to rebuild Nigeria.

“Our President is performing well. So are our state government, National Assembly, council chairmen, and councillors. We have reasons to be confident and proud.

“Our projects are visible — road construction, hospitals, schools and more. We have done a lot and will continue to do even more,” he said.

Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, called on all party stakeholders to work together, saying only the APC could meet the people’s needs.

Obasa urged Lagos West I Senatorial District not to lag behind. He advised members to mobilise those with PVCs for the July elections.

Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Presidential aide on SDGs, relayed President Tinubu’s compliments to members, saying he is committed to resetting the nation.

She said the President expected Lagos to take the council elections seriously. She urged members to mobilise friends, family, and neighbours to vote for APC.

Rep. James Faleke, representing Ikeja Federal Constituency, expressed confidence that APC would win all 57 council areas in the upcoming polls.

“There is no other party in Lagos. APC is dominant. We are seeing visible development everywhere, and we expect more from the incoming chairmen.

“We must appreciate our President for granting us these 37 LCDAs. Let’s all go out and vote for APC to secure total victory,” Faleke said.

Chief Rabiu Oluwa, APC Lagos West Senatorial Leader and Governance Advisory Council (GAC) member, urged members to campaign rigorously and not remain complacent.

“This election is very important. It is a test run for the 2027 general elections. We must not take it lightly or stay idle.

“LASIEC won’t write results. The outcome depends on our votes. We must get involved and mobilise all party faithful across the state,” he said.

The rally attracted thousands of APC supporters across the 18 councils in Lagos West 1 Senatorial District.

  • Lagos LG election: Opposition candidates lament LASIEC screening delays

Lagos LG election: Opposition candidates lament LASIEC screening delays

Few days to the Lagos Local Government Elections, opposition party candidates are still undergoing statutory screening by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

It was gathered that under the Electoral Guidelines for the July 12 elections, candidate validation was to be completed by June 30.

However, a NAN correspondent observed on Wednesday that PDP, Zenith Labour Party, Young Progressives Party, and other candidates were still undergoing screening two days after the deadline.

Seven days to the end of campaigns, many opposition candidates besieged LASIEC headquarters to validate their nominations amid delays.

Some opposition leaders alleged LASIEC was colluding with the ruling APC to disenfranchise their candidates through administrative bottlenecks.

At the LASIEC headquarters, Chief Sunday Olaifa, PDP Deputy Chairman (Lagos West), expressed concern that only opposition candidates faced screening delays.

Olaifa said the process appeared designed to frustrate opposition parties and distract them from campaign efforts.

“I’m alarmed by the prolonged documentation process. Many candidates are still outside LASIEC’s gate, struggling to get screened.

“The verification process is highly questionable. I’ve not seen any APC candidates facing the same difficulty,” Olaifa said.

He said opposition candidates should be on the campaign trail, not struggling to validate their nominations days to the election.

He urged LASIEC to ensure a level playing field for all political parties throughout the entire election process.

Also speaking, Alh. Isiaka Shodiya, PDP Chairman in Alimosho LGA, said LASIEC’s requirements were unprecedented and unfair.

Shodiya noted that asking candidates to present primary school certificates contradicts the Election Guidelines, which require a minimum of SSCE.

“How do you expect someone who finished primary school 40 years ago to produce that certificate?” he asked.

He argued that LASIEC’s duty is to midwife elections, not disqualify properly nominated candidates.

Shodiya insisted that only a court of law has the power to disqualify candidates, not LASIEC.

He said delays were wasting valuable campaign time, preventing candidates from engaging voters and sharing their manifestos.

Mr Adebayo Alade, PDP Chairmanship Candidate for Kosofe, said he had spent several days at LASIEC without being screened.

“I’ve been here since Friday. I also came Monday and today. I’ve waited five hours without any progress,” Alade said.

Prince Edide Yonwuren, ZLP Deputy State Chairman, described the screening process as overly complicated for opposition candidates.

Mr Honfovn Denagan, ZLP Chairmanship Candidate for Badagry, urged LASIEC to remove barriers preventing timely screening.

Samad Okufuwa, Lagos Publicity Secretary of the YPP, said the process should be more seamless and less stressful.

In response, LASIEC Chairman Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd) said screening began June 26 as outlined in its April 12 timetable.

She said the process involved validating candidates’ credentials under the Lagos State Independent Electoral Law, 2008 (as amended).

She noted that some candidates failed to submit all required documents and were advised to use the open window on July 2 and 3.

“Some returned on June 30 and caused a disruption by forming large, noisy crowds during the ongoing exercise,” she said.

She said this led to temporary suspension and postponement of the screening for other parties to July 1.

LASIEC, she said, remains committed to a free, transparent, and credible election on July 12.

Recall that the LASIEC guidelines state that campaigns started April 18 and will end July 9.
