  • Burna Boy finally succumbs to police, to be charged to court on Monday

    Dancehall singer, Burna Boy finally submitted himself on Friday to the Lagos State Police Command over claims of his involvement in a robbery attack on Mr. 2kay.

    The outspoken singer was subsequently arrested, interrogated and detained .Burna is expected to be charged to court on Monday together with four accused earlier arrested in connection with the attack.

    Mr. Imohimi Edgal, Lagos Comissioner after the interrogation, said the State Police Command has zero tolerance for all forms of crime and would not hesitate to prosecute anyone found culpable in any criminal offence perpetrated in the State.

    “There would be no sacred cows. This Command is poised to ensure that every resident can feel safe wherever they are and carry out their businesses without fear or favour. Anyone, therefore, found to be involved in this case would be made to face the law to clear his or her name or face prosecution,” Imohimi said.

    Recall that the pop star was declared wanted by the Lagos Police Command in connection with the robbery attack at Eko Hotel and Suites early last month, reported to the Command headquarters in Ikeja at about 5pm.

    Leader of the suspected robbers, had confessed on how they camouflaged as room service to rob Mr. 2kay at Eko Hotel and Suites on the instruction of Burna Boy’s Road Manager, Joel Kantiock.

    Yesterday, Burna Boy had announced the postponement of his concert scheduled for Sunday, December 17.

     

  • BREAKING: Ambode presents N1.046tn budget for 2018

    The Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday has presented the 2018 budget estimate before the Lagos State House of Assembly.

    The projected budget size is One Trillion, Forty-six Billion, One Hundred and Twenty-one Million, One Hundred and Eighty-one Thousand, Six Hundred and Eighty naira (N1,046,121).

    The budget is tagged Budget of Progress and Development.

    The government is still at the Assembly complex.

  • Gov. Ambode promise to bring power to every Lagos home

    Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Thursday said arrangement had been put in place to implement the embedded power project which would soon bring electricity to every home in the state.

    Ambode spoke at the 2017 community day celebration with the theme: “Community Affinity: Aligning Lagos Communities with Private Sector” held in Lagos.

    He said that his administration would not rest until it ensured that there will be light in every home, a school in every ward, as well as a clinic in every neighbourhood.

    “These may look like tall dreams, but history has shown that they are achievable. Together, we shall realise these goals,” he said.

    The governor also said that the government hoped to achieve phenomenal increase in the state’s internally generated revenue in 2018 by persuading more people into the tax net.

    “2018 is going to be a better year for Lagos.

    “With your support through the performance of your obligations, we can safely commit ourselves in the conviction that by the end of 2018, more youths will be in schools and more families will be gainfully employed.

    “With a home to return to and a community to live in, our dream of a more secure and prosperous state will be another Nigerian wonder,” he said.

    Ambode commended the Community Development Associations for coming together to celebrate the values of community development.

    He also appealed to residents to continue to cooperate with his administration to make the state bigger and better.

    Earlier, Alhaji Tajudeen Quadri, Chairman, Community Development Advisory Committee, urged the Community Development Associations and Committees to imbibe the spirit of transparency and accountability in running their affairs.

    Quadri, who said the theme of the event was apt, urged community leaders to key into Corporate Social Responsibility as a vehicle to boost development at the grassroots.

    Also, the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Alhaji Muslim Folami, urged residents to support the state government to deliver more on its promises of improved services, programmes and projects.

    There were prizes won by community associations for self help power projects, while the governor also announced a gift of N500, 000 to each of the community development committees.

  • N40k debt: Man commits suicide at Lagos Magistrate Court

    A man who couldn’t redeem the financial debt he owed someone on committed suicide by jumping from a height to ease his legal struggles.
    According to reports making rounds on social media, the man allegedly jumped to his death at Lagos State Magistrate Court in Ogba yesterday.
    He has been tried for owing a paltry sum of N40,000 which he hasn’t been able to raise thereby leading to legal actions being instituted against him.

    “This man jumped from the 3rd floor of the Lagos State Magistrate Court in Ogba. He owed 40k. Been in prison on remand for the past 6 months. After his case today, he took the leap to his death. The law should have a human face.”

  • Panic as overnight fire kills family of four in Lagos

    An overnight fire has killed a family of four, simply identified as Eze’s family, at No. 13, Buraimoh street, Bariga area of Lagos.

    The Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Mr Rasak Fadipe, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

    Fadipe said the incident occurred at about 2.48 a.m.

    He said personnel of the service got to the scene of the incident as soon as they got information about the fire, but that due to the double burglary irons on the door and window of the apartment, they were unable to reach the victims in time.

    “The apartment is a chemist store. The father, mother, and two children of ages five and eight were found dead inside the store.

    “ We advise that although one needs security in his or her house or business place, it should not be to the detriment of the people.

    “Members of the family should always know the exist of their apartment whenever there is an emergency,” the director said.

    Some sources told NAN that the deceased woman was pregnant mother of the two children, and that the fire started after electricity supply was restored to the area.

    Others believed that the fire could have been caused by candlelight.

  • Yuletide: Lagos Police boss assures residents of safety, warns against extravagant spending

    The Lagos State Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr Imohimi Edgal has assured residents of the state of adequate security before, during and after the festive seasons.

    Edgal in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, Mr Chike Godwin Oti, particularly urged residents to be vigilant and celebrate moderately during the festive period, just as he restated that additional batches of arms police officers would be deployed in all volatile areas in the State to ensure safety.

    He also warned that the command would not tolerate lawlessness or any act that may conflict with peaceful conduct that the State is known for.

    Oti said, “The CP commends the support from the State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, as well as the cooperation that the police has been receiving so far from other security agencies including the Neighbourhood Safety Corps.

    “The CP also expressed satisfaction with the cooperation that the command has been receiving from both the State Government and corporate and religious institutions especially during the organisation of major outdoor functions like The Experience concert and the Lagos Street Carnival which successes underscored the capacity of security, traffic management and emergency rescue operative machinery in the State and the commendable model of social and religious tolerance in the State. “

    While assuring of maximum security during the One Lagos Fiesta and other events slated throughout December across the State, Edgal said it was important for the people to be vigilant, celebrate moderately and pass on useful tips to security agencies.

    He also said that all emergency numbers would be fully operational and solicited the cooperation of the citizens in ensuring a safe and crime-free December in Lagos State.

  • Yuletide: NURTW restricts selling of alcohol in Lagos motor parks

    The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) says it has banned sales of alcoholic drinks in all motor parks in Lagos State ahead of the festive period.

    Mr Tajudeen Agbede, the Lagos State Chairman of NURTW, made this known on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

    Agbede said that the union has set up a task force to enforce the ban in various motor parks across the state.

    “We don’t want to experience any form of accident on the highways as a result of alcoholic drinks during the festive period.

    “We have four units of the task force going round the motor parks, at least three times a week, to enforce the ban on sales of alcoholic drinks within and outside our parks,” he said.

    The union chairman said the ban was not only meant for the festive seasons, adding that it would continue after the festivities.

    Agbede also appealed to the commuters to board vehicles at the designated motor parks for security of their lives and property instead of boarding unsafe vehicles by the roadside.

    He said that the union has also put in place some security measures in all the parks to guarantee safety of the commuters.

    “Our motor parks are safe to board vehicles to anywhere you are going to in the country,” he said.

  • JUST IN: UNILAG non-teaching staff shuts gate to protest

    Non-academic staff at the University of Lagos on Monday protest what they termed “the Federal Government’s unequal distribution of allowance”.

    The protesters shut the institution’s gate.

    The scene of the protest at 11.48am, there was heavy traffic along major roads leading to the university gate as a result of the protest.

     

    The workers, who held leaves, were also chanting anti-oppression songs.

    They accused the Federal Government of downgrading their importance in the nation’s education system.

    Lagos glows as International Drink Festival holds today

    More than 3,000 participants, 2,000 International and Local Exhibitors and 500 delegates are currently gathered at the International Drink Festival as the maiden edition berth in Lagos.

    The three-day International Drink Festival, packaged by Balmoral Group at the Balmoral Event Centre of Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos, opened on Friday.

    The event has already witnessed mammoth attendance as many international drinks, cocktails and wine companies were on hand to display their products.

    Some of the international companies on hand are Glenfiddich International, makers of Remmy Martin, Jack Daniels and others, Energy Company, Rite Nigeria Ltd. Saharan Distillers and Tanamont Nig. Ltd.

    Others are Guinness Nigeria Ltd., 7up bottling Company Plc., and the highlights of the event include free drinks of various international and local cocktails, wines, spirits, and soft drinks energy drinks among others.

    The event according to the organisers, is expected to have at least 15,000 attendees.

    The event will also feature a business round table discussion from experts from various fields ranging from government policy makers, captains of industries and manufacturers.

    The discussion varies on health awareness, government policies on manufacturing of drinks, among others.

    The Chief Operating Officer (COO), Balmoral Group, Akin Esho, told NAN that the success of the epoch event was a conscientious plan of four years.

    “This is a product of four years plan, so the success of the event came as no surprise to us. We are known for organising events of this magnitude.

    “We are proud of this achievement so far. The event is about creating a platform for the drink industry. It is a platform where the players in the industry interact under one roof.

    “This is a platform for the international and local manufacturer in the drink industry to socialise and collaborate within themselves on how to improve the industry.

    “For sure, event like this will bring the desired revolution needed in the drink industry, for us, it is a positive development,’’ he said.

    Esho said that the event would not be short of the expectation which includes number of attendees, exhibitors and guests.

    “We have had positive response so far, the number of guests here is so encouraging; we have them in numbers and we are happy that we have done a fantastic job.

    “We expect more people to come on Saturday and on Sunday at the grand finale which will include a cocktail party for all.

    “We want to make sure that this type of event will be what everybody will be looking forward to in years to come because the success story recorded here is a worthy testimony.

    “The expectations has not been short, everybody is cool with what we have been able to achieve so far,’’ he said

  • [Photos] Ambode receives Queen of Netherlands in Lagos

    Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Tuesday played host to the Queen of Netherlands, Her Majesty, Maxima Zorreguieta Cerruti as part of efforts to advance the United Nation’s financial inclusion advocacy as a vehicle to alleviate poverty and fostering equitable economic growth in Nigeria.

    Queen Maxima, who was visiting Nigeria for the first time in the last five years, in her capacity as the Special Advocate to United Nations’ Secretary General on financial inclusion for development, said she was impressed by the initiatives of the State Government to improve service delivery especially towards expanding access to affordable healthcare.

    While noting that it was important for governments to prioritise access to affordable healthcare, Queen Maxima particularly lauded the health insurance scheme of the State Government, which legal framework had already been put in place, saying that Governor Ambode deserved commendation for coming up with such laudable effort.

    She said: “Today I had opportunity to visit two clinics in the State where I saw the new pilot project in which you (Governor Ambode) has also started looking into which is to make health insurance possible even to the poorest of the people.

    “I was very impressed by the leadership that the State of Lagos has taken as to coming up with a law which makes health insurance mandatory and also to able to plan for the future and you are already doing some credit to some health facilities which of course will improve the efficiency of a lot of these institutions. I commend you for your efforts and I will like to know from you Mr Governor what is your commitment on the future in this field,” she said.

    Responding, Governor Ambode said the Health Insurance Scheme of the State Government which aimed at expanding access and scaling up healthcare delivery in the State would commence in 2018.

    He said the legal framework to guide the implementation of the policy had already been put in place, while every necessary efforts to ensure the success of the scheme were being put in place.
